I own both of these cameras, and both produce awesome video images - but each has its advantages and disadvantages.

If you really want to learn cinematography - and you don't need a still camera, I recommend the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. It is the least expensive interchangeable lens camera you can buy that records to RAW or 10-bit ProRes with 13+ stops of dynamic range - straight out of the box. Like Pro cinema cameras, it sets the shutter in degrees rather than fractions of a second and has a built-in headphone jack so you can monitor your audio track (only one other interchangeable lens camera below $1000 has a built-in headphone jack - the Panasonic GH3).

Although it has a steeper learning curve than a consumer camera, and color grading in post is pretty much mandatory - this is absolutely the best filmmakers' camera in this price range.

Second choice:

If you want something that is a little easier to use, the GH3 might be a better choice. With its built-in electronic viewfinder that continues to work while you're shooting video, 1080/60p frame rate for slow motion, up to 72mbps recording and all metal splash resistant body - this is a great video/still camera for the price.

The A5100 has no viewfinder and no headphone jack. It also has the standard Sony 30 minute continuous recording limit and a plastic body. Plus, the lack of a mic jack is a big deal.

For [less than $800] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B0WREM/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B009B0WREM&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=battleforthew-20) the all-metal splash resistant GH3 with its electronic viewfinder, mic & headphone jacks and hours of continuous recording is a much better choice for serious video shooters.

Hi /u/arborday - I have both the GH2 and the GH3 - and I'm upgrading to the GH4. Here's why:

The GH4 has focus peaking - neither of the older cameras have it
1080/96p slow motion - the GH2 maxes out at 30p, the GH3 maxes out at 60p.
The GH4 has a bright 2360k dot OLED viewfinder - the GH2 doesn't have OLED and the GH3's is only 1744k dots.
The GH4 has a CineLike D flat color profile - while with the older cameras, all you can do is turn the saturation down and hope for the best.
The GH4 allows you to set shutter angle or shutter speed - your choice - the older cameras are limited to shutter speed only.
The GH4 has a master pedestal function - like a video camera - to adjust your blacks.

Without even mentioning internally recorded 4K or the YAGH dock, this is a far superior camera to either the [GH2] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043VE26U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0043VE26U&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=battleforthew-20) or the [GH3] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B0WREM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B009B0WREM&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=battleforthew-20). Yeah, what is your budget? A bunch of the main stream DSLRs work with the video mic go even though they do not state plug in power. The Canon T3i, T4i, T5i, and T6i all work with it. The Panasonic Lumix GH3, GH4, G7, and G85 all work with it. The Canon 5D Mk3 works with it. The Nikon D800 works with it. A whole bunch more cameras work with it but we can't give you a good recommendation unless you give us a budget.

Does it have to be a camcorder? And is your budget strictly for a camera, or does it include all accessories, as well?

The BlackMagic Cinema Camera is $2,995, but you'd need to spend some extra cash on related gear.

If you're not opposed to using a DSLR, I'd recommend either a 5DmkII or a Panasonic GH3. There's some other options, but those are good ways to go, in my opinion.

Note, however, the BMCC requires a good deal of consideration, especially if you choose to shoot RAW.

Panasonic GH3. I'm about to purchase one for myself after doing a metric butt-ton of research and it seems like the best camera under $1000 (body only) for shooting some high quality footage. It has 60fps in 1080p and some slo-motion options as well.

i'd split the difference and go with a Gh3. for an MFT mount first camera, i wouldn't worry about going crazy with lens quality. a kit lens will serve you fine for a while and when you upgrade your camera in the future, you may be going S35, APS-C or FullFrame, in which case your MFT glass wouldn't fit. i recommend grabbing the 14-140 kit lens, the 20mm pancake (roughly $400 each) then grab an e-image tripod

having owned the 7D, BMCC,and Gh4 i feel like I've trained my life to answer this! :)
the Gh4 is not great in low light by cinema standards, but its better than the BMCC or the 7D. the 7D and Gh3 are on par while the BMCC's low sensitivity and small sensor make it crap for low light.

with the GH3 and GH4 you get 1080/60p but the 7D is only 720/60p and the BMCC has no slomo.

the BMCC is a bitch of a camera ergonomically and it is a little finicky in its function.

the GH3/4 both have way more video minded features than the 7D (zebras, peaking, audio levels, histogram, etc.)

if you like the video that you get from a 7D, buy a t3i instead. it's the exact same sensor, but a cheaper body. then you could spend your money on EF mount glass which is more likely to stick with you when you upgrade (even if it's not canon brand)
