I would suggest testing the power supply - it may be the motherboard, not the PSU, that's fried. Sometimes the laptop loses the ability to deal with outside power due to a jack failure or onboard issue that allows the battery to continue powering it as long as it holds charge.
These Patriot drives are good for $30. Should be faster than any spinning disk it came with.
