I'm all for hobbyists using their aquariums as a stepping off point for scientific research but, unfortunately, in this case, there are way too many factors to consider to do this in a home aquarium and view the data anything but anecdotal. I can expand upon this but, seriously there is just an immense amount of preparation and process leading up to an experiment to address these topics appropriately.

If you're interested in nutrient recruitment and cycling in this clade or teleosts in general I can link some research papers on experiments that cover the topic. Doing a search for basic aquaculture presentations, papers or articles on feed conversion should also provide some insight in nutrient use and release.

Reading this book and delving into its citations has built a great fundamental understanding of this topic not sure if it's available online in PDF form or if it has been outmoded by a new publication but it's worth looking into.
