I'll make a list of stuff you need. For the best "bang for your buck" in the $200ish price range.

-----------------------------------------

Speaker wire. Amazon Basics makes great stuff. If you want, you can get 100 feet of it for an extra $2 I think. You can get those monoprice banana plugs if you want. They just help if you're going to be switching speakers around a lot.

Simple wire stripper. Should work just fine.

Cable to plug it in. That'll just plug the amp into a computer. And that cable is amazing quality. For real. I don't know what it is about it, but the moment I touched that cable I knew it was special. This isn't a joke either. You'll understand when you get one. Trust me.

50 watt per channel amp. This thing will be more than enough. I just like it because it is open box, so cheap. The same one new on amazon is $65. If you want to order from amazon, you can just get the smsl sa-36a. Same amp, just 20 watts per channel. Which, again, is plenty.

[Here's that cheaper smsl amp] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017W13OR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_U2NSBbTRHGFS5). I've got a few of them. They're great. This is what I'd go for if the other one is sold out.

Cheap but good little amp. I don't have one of these because I'm not a fan of the looks, but they get great reviews and a lot of people really like them.

---------------

Speakers:

Miccas. These things are nice for that price. In this price range, you really won't be getting anything better unless you go DIY.

Fluance SX6. These guys are big, but they throw a good amount of sound and some pretty deep bass for a pair of bookshelf speakers. Careful, they're pretty big.

Pioneer. These things are decent, but I think the Fluances would be better for this price. The SX6s throw more bass, which is good if you're not getting a sub. However, these are smaller.

Fluance signature series. I know, you said your budget is only $200, but you said if you need to spend more, then you will. These will sound better than all of the other speakers linked, however, that's not why they're here. I put them here for two reasons. The first is that they're front ported. Most people that are new to speakers might put them up against a wall or close to it, not understanding that the port needs some room to breathe. These have front ports so that's not a problem. The second reason, just look at them. If you really care about looks, these ones are the ones. They're beautiful. (My opinion obviously).

Oof almost forgot. Pleaae don't place the speakers directly on your desk.

--------------------------------

That's a lot. I'll sum it up with my opinion and why.

Amp: smsl sa36a. For close range, you don't need anything with more power. This thing will do whatever you need for bookshelf speakers.

Speakers: micca mb42x. Why? Here's why: for this price range, you won't notice a huge difference in any speakers, unless you get some bad ones. So, get the cheapest ones you can. Later on, if you can afford to upgrade them, you'll probably want to do that. Then you'll have a pair of $80 speakers that you don't need rather than a pair of 130 speakers that you don't need. Another reason I would pick the miccas is because they punch above their price range. Most people say they sound more like a pair of $125 speakers rather than a pair of $80 speakers. So, for real, they're good. Also, they're the smallest of the bunch.

Or, build a pair of C Notes and get something way better than any of these.

Hope this helps!

Lots of people buy soundbars because they are convenient. They're small, don't require much wiring, and are inexpensive.

However, they never match the sound quality of real speakers. Music is meant to be heard on a stereo (2 speakers) so soundbars will never sound as good.

http://www.cnet.com/news/before-you-buy-a-sound-bar-speaker-read-this/

If you're on a tight budget then I personally recommend the Andrew Jones Pioneer bookshelf speakers. Mr. Jones is a well regarded speaker designer and they sound great. Not only do I like the speakers, but they are always recommended in the hi-fi world. Plus, with a stereo you can always upgrade to better parts later on. Over time, you could get better speakers, a subwoofer, center channel, and eventually you'll have a kickass 5.1 system if you want it. Soundbars don't allow any room for upgrading

Then choose your quality level with a corresponding budget:

Lowest entry level mini amp and speakers: $50 6-1/2" 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair and Hi-Fi Mini Amplifier Bundle.

A step up mini amp and speakers: $120 SMSL SA-36A $52 with Dayton Audio B652-AIR 6-1/2" with AMT Tweeter speakers $52 with Speaker Wire and wire tool.

Receiver and better speakers: Around $300 to $400. Look for similar used for the best value.

Receiver: Refurbished with a 1 year manufacturer warranty.

Stereo: ONKYO TX-8220 $135, or ONKYO TX-8140 $200.

Or AV: For use with a TV even with just 2 speakers, 4K HDMI switching, high pass crossover for your speakers if ever adding a subwoofer.

u/boobinator · 10 pointsr/audiophile

They're an ok loudspeaker company, their speakers usually have a very bright sound and punchy bass, not really neutral but some people like non neutral speakers. Dont know how their satellite speakers will sound though, probably not that good(they're tiny satellite speakers after all). And 2800$ is way too much for speakers that small. That doesn't really look like a good deal for 2100$ even. If you're looking for a 5.1 system these should beat those or get similar performance atleast - http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG, and this sub will literally destroy that one when it comes to performance and bass output - SVS PB 1000

EDIT : Actually it seems that the guy is just lying about the price, the speakers cost 250$ each and the sub is 500$, a much more acceptable price, at least for the speakers, sub is still overpriced. Those prices put the total cost at around 1750$ that is if you buy everything individually. They're usually cheaper when purchased as a system bundle. I'd say 1000$ would be a good price for a used set.

BTW the speakers are Golden Ear SuperSat3, the sub is Forcefield 3 and the system is called the GoldenEar SuperCinema 3

u/GothamCountySheriff · 9 pointsr/vinyl

You have an excellent starter table. Your MCS 6604 is a semi-automatic quartz-lock turntable based around a p-mount/T4P tonearm. It was manufactured by Matsushita, the parent company for Technics and is essentially a Technics SL-Q10/Q100/Q1000.

Semi-automatic means that you will need to set the needle on the record to begin play, but when it is finished playing, it will automatically return to the tonearm rest. Quartz-lock means that is automatically sets the correct pitch based on internal circuitry. P-mount/T4P was a cartridge standard designed to simplify turntable setup for the general vinyl user.

If everything else is in working order, the only thing you will need is a new cartridge/stylus combo. I would recommend the Audio Technica AT92E or AT311E. They are proven workhorse cartridges and still readily available.

The receiver will be a good starter unit. The tape deck may need some service if it's been sitting for awhile. Specifically the belts may have become dried, stretched and or rotted over time.

As far as speakers, the Pioneer SP-B22LR are an excellent bookshelf speaker that many reviews have called "budget audiophile" level. Normally $130 for the pair, they routinely go on sale below $100 about once a month. When one major retailer (Best Buy, Amazon, etc.) has them on sale, the other quickly follow suit.

Great deal right now on the Andrew Jones bookshelf speakers. Grab two pairs and then you just need a center, sub and receiver.

  1. Yes, it's a good entry-level turntable and is easy to both use and set up.
  2. If you want speakers you can hook up straight to your turntable without any extra equipment you'll be looking for powered/active speakers. The Micca PB42X should be pretty decent, and the M-Audio Studiophile AV 30 should be alright as well. If you plan on getting a power amp or a receiver (so you can use passive speakers) you could look into the Pioneer SP-BS22, the Polk T15, or the Micca MB42X.
  3. Nothing if you buy powered speakers. For passive speakers you'll need either a receiver or a power amp.
  4. Radiohead - Kid A
u/Armsc · 7 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

There is nothing wrong with your choices except if you have money I would not get the Lepai. Either of the speakers you picked would work fine but I'll give you some other options.

Budget is $250 so lets see how we can spend it.

  • SMSL SA-50 $70 Nothing wrong with this guy. That gives us about $180 bucks left for speakers.

  • Option 1 - Fluance XL7S $180 These are the higher series Fluance so I would expect better performance from them. The wife might like the looks too.

  • Option 2 - Philharmonic Affordable Accuracy Monitor $165 These are upgraded versions of the already good Pioneer BS22 speakers.

  • Option 3 - Pioneer BS22 $100 + Dayton 800 sub Right over your budget but would sound great. I know you don't want a sub but I really think you're going to miss out on the low stuff without one. You could also get these without the sub they actually do pretty well on their own.

  • Option 4 - Boston Acoustic XS 2.1 $160 another 2.1 set but with really small speakers. The powered sub included will cover the the low end as the main speakers don't go low at all.

  • Option 5 Energy CB5 $102 + dayton sub above. These are smaller than the Pioneers so you'll need the sub but I think these could also fit the bill.
u/EZmacaroni · 6 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Yes. Do this.

Right now I've got that exact lepai driving these $125 speakers (set). They were designed by Andrew Jones, who is one of the more successful speaker "engineers" whos last speakers retailed for over $40,000. They sound fantastic. They rival speakers that I've heard at almost 5x the price.

I added Bluetooth fuctionality with one of [these receivers] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GX71GNO/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?qid=1427739222&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=bluetooth+audio+receiver&dpPl=1&dpID=41ATezzg6pL&ref=plSrch )

The cool thing about getting a real set of bookshelves and starting receiver like the lepai is its cheap enough to upgrade later when your budget allows. You can go ahead at some point and get a real 5.1 or 7.1 receiver and the other speakers (matching or not). Many, if not most modern receivers come with Bluetooth and or apple airplay built in. Even something like the [Yamaha 375] ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HZE2WW8/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1427741141&sr=8-2&keywords=yamaha+receiver&dpPl=1&dpID=31Cl2ylwH0L&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SX200_QL40 ) has more than enough horsepower.

Razer is not know for bifl.

u/kbick675 · 6 pointsr/audiophile

Do you plan on continuing to use the receiver? Because if so then the Pioneer SP-BS22 bookshelves are spectacular for the price range. I have them and can say nothing but good things about them. I have also had them demoed to me by Andrew Jones himself at Pioneer here in SoCal and that was what really sold me on them. They will also blow any computer speakers from Logitech and klipsch away unless you need a lot more bass than these can provide, which is substantial.

For comparison I also have the JBL 4326 studio monitors in my office which I also love very much.

$260 for those Miccas is borderline ridiculous. You can get much better speakers for less. I'd prefer either of the below for significantly less money:

u/brianf408 · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

First step: have you read noaudiophile's reviews? He does very thorough reviews on a lot of budget speakers, and has corrections for many of the popular options. His corrections for the Infinity P163s that I'm currently using made them sound like completely different speakers.

First let's start with powered options:

The Micca PB42X would be a good option. They are basically a powered version of the MB42X so you don't need to purchase a separate amp. Also in the similar realm that get recommended here a lot would be the Swans D1010 and the Edifier R1280T.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of passive speakers, as you get a lot more options to expand your system.

Pioneer BS22 bookshelf speakers are great and have gone on sale quite a bit lately for $70-80/pair.

Dayton B652 I am currently using as my surround speakers, but people rave about them as a budget desktop option

Micca MB42X also get great reviews.

You could also go used for your speakers, but sometimes it can be hard to parse through all the junk out there if you don't know what you're looking for.

Take any of those passive options and pair them up with an inexpensive amp like this SMSL or Lepai for a good budget setup.

I would also recommend checking your local Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a used receiver, you could pick up a very decent one for just a few bucks and have a great starting setup. This will give you a lot more powerful amp, and the ability later to easily add a subwoofer or expand to surround sound. Personally I'm using an older Sony home theater receiver at my desk, it's old enough that it doesn't have HDMI or optical inputs, someone was just giving it away so I snagged it.

u/adayinalife · 5 pointsr/vinyl

At a bit over $500 here is what I would do, all great quality items and allows for sequential upgrades down the line:

MMF 2.2 $299 https://www.musicdirect.com/turntables/music-hall-mmf-22-turntable

Sony reciever (with phono) $149 https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH190-Stereo-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B078WFDR8D/

Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers $99 https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

u/Hubb1e · 5 pointsr/buildapc

There is simply nothing else that compares to the ELAC B5 or B6 bookshelf speakers designed by legendary speaker designer Andrew Jones. They are the best budget bookshelf speakers on the market by a pretty wide margin. Pair it with an inexpensive 2 channel amp and you've got a killer desktop system

Buy these Pioneers from Amazon while they're on sale!

u/shadyinternets · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

do you like how klipsch horn tweeters sound? i personally cant stand them, as in at any sort of decent volume they hurt my ears. they are just so piercing to me. cant do it.

i would recommend these for a budget system, they are just great all around speakers for the price. i have these and have given them as gifts, and always happy with them. https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=sr_1_3

the amp part of that klipsch deal does look pretty interesting though. and apparently its $500 on its own, making that $379 deal seem all the sweeter. if it had a dac i liked better (ess sabre too piercing for me, like horn tweeters, apparently my ears hate higher frequencies?) id prob buy that package just for the amp as it has some nice features.

https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-PowerGate-Amplified-Wireless-Gateway/dp/B01N0A7PH5

if youre familiar with klipsch horn tweeters and like them id say that looks like a pretty good deal. the amp part alone is prob worth that $500 really.

I picked these up after I lot of research. I'm pretty happy with them. then I picked up a 10-20 dollar amplifier from craigslist and I was good to go. I also have the lp120

u/Caswell64 · 4 pointsr/vinyl

If you have surround sound on your mind for the future, I would recommend getting passive (unpowered) speakers paired with a surround receiver. You can add the additional speakers and subwoofer as your budget allows.

For speakers I would suggest the Andrew Jones Pioneers, since Pioneer offers all the matching speakers for surround when you want to buy them.

For the receiver, I would go with this Denon since it has a phono preamp for your turntable in case it lacks one. You could go cheaper if your table has a phono preamp already.

u/n8great321 · 4 pointsr/vinyl

Something like this amp and these speakers would probably work well.

Having a separate amp/speakers gives you more flexibility down the road with upgrades. Once you start going up the price chain with speakers, powered ones aren't really offered anymore.

u/wgboyd · 4 pointsr/vinyl

I cannot stress enough how absolutely terrible those speakers are. In my opinion they will ruin all your investment and effort. At the very least get the Micca MB42's instead. If you can go up a little more, the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR are great for the price.

u/nomnommish · 4 pointsr/audio

Pioneer BS22

See if you can get a cheap enough but sturdy used stand and stand-mount it. And if you can place it 1-2 feet away from the back wall. It will make a big difference.

u/MikeyFiveBucks · 3 pointsr/vinyl

As always, I'll endorse the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speakers.

I own them and really think they sound fantastic for their price. Also they are incredibly highly regarded at their price point: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/a-great-bookshelf-speaker/

Right now they're on sale on Amazon for $100: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008NCD2LG/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1375295815&sr=8-1&pi=SL75

KC vinyl hunter reporting in :

Most of the cl postings linked here are over a month old and therefore are likely gone already. Here (like everywhere else I assume), about 80% of cl posts go unclosed even when they sell. It never hurts to check but just don't be surprised.

I also don't think any of the linked receivers would be much of a good deal, you could pick up a 90s receiver at one of the goodwill stores around town pretty easily (usually). The pioneer 780 is a good one, but I suspect it's no longer available. Not sure if its the same guy or not but I inquired about a SX780 in columbia a while back and just never got any response, might be worth trying.

In all honesty I'd consider taking a trip down to the hippy store "It's a Beautiful Day" by westport, in the back vinyl room they have a pretty significant selection of vintage audio stuff in solid condition. Most usually come with a replaced belt and a new cart, and I've seen some ok turntables there as low as $50 but they tend to have a few receivers in stock. The turntable guy isn't always there (Jason? I'm bad with names) but he has his name and number posted on the wall by the vintage equipment

If you want to go with a new turntable... Brothers music on Johnson drive had some (NIB) Uturn turntables last time I was there, you can get AT-LP120 at probably a few of the other stores in town if you want to go that route. Or obviously those can be ordered online.

Unfortunately we seem to be suffering pretty heavily from the vinyl boom here from a vintage equipment perspective as anything that's remotely a good deal on CL gets snapped up in less than an hour. For the love of everything that is holy, stay away from Vinyl Renaissance in westport... home of overpriced hipster bullshit.

For speakers the ole Andrew Jones Pioneers are pretty much a steal at their price of only $99

The store linked above in the West bottoms (this) might be a solid place to check, I've never been there. There's a few other similar small stores around but you can probably expect to overpay a little bit since they'll have done a little maintenance n the tables they have. There's one other store I knew about down there but I can't remember what the name was... I'll see if I can find it.

u/agray20938 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Here's what I'd do on as small a budget as reasonable:

Reciever

Speakers: Pick from some of these - Pioneer; Wave Crest Audio; Micca

Alternatively, you could go for a powered monitor setup. This will allow you to plug the speakers directly into the tv, without a receiver. They will sound better than a soundbar. However, they aren't as easily upgradeable like a conventional setup is, and when you decide to, you'll still need to buy a reciever. My advice, is to buy these Micca powered speakers now, then save up around $500, and buy a good quality 2.1 setup. then, you can easily move the Micca's to a desktop system, or any other TV.

u/Wail_Bait · 3 pointsr/diyaudio

The TriTrix is popular because it can be built in different configurations. The sealed enclosure is good for a center channel, but you'll probably want the vented or transmission line enclosure for your main speakers, depending on what you have space for. I'm not sure what the frequency response of the sealed design is though, so it might be fine for LR when paired with a subwoofer.

I'd probably start with a pair of overnight sensations and then see where that gets you. They're pretty cheap and easy to build, so you're not really risking anything. You can then read about how they compare to other designs to get a better idea of what some of those other kits sound like.

But at that price it's hard to recommend anything other than the Pioneer BS22. They're excellent speakers, and no DIY kit can compete with Pioneer's economy of scale. There's also a tremendous number of used speakers you can get for under $100, and depending on your luck it's often the best option for a low budget.

u/gurueuey · 3 pointsr/hometheater

All in one systems are just a step above HTiB systems in regards to quality. The only advantage is that you don't have to get an entirely new system if something fails. What do you have currently? It's possible that there's enough to use to fill in while you save up for more components.

With a $700 budget, here's what I'd recommend:

Receiver ($189.99): Denon s710 Receiver

Subwoofer ($138.00) Dayton 1200 12" subwoofer

Speakers option 1 ($89.99 + $96.99) Pioneer Andrew Jones Bookshelf pair + Pioneer Andrew Jones Center

Speakers option 2 ($229.99 + $179.99) [ELAC B5 Bookshelf pair](http://www.amazon.com/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSER6O/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1453949947&sr=8-7&keywords=B014GSEPY8%7CB014GSEQ06%7CB014GSEQ2O%7CB014GSEQCY%7CB 014GSEQWE%7CB014GSER6O%7CB014GSEUJ8%7CB014GSEVFQ) + ELAC Center Channel

Option 1 total: $514.97 without shipping, taxes, or accessories. The Pioneer speakers are among the best budget speakers around right now, especially on sale. Some people think they sound a little veiled, so if super crisp highs are your thing, I'd consider alternatives.

Option 2 total: $737.97 without shipping, taxes, or accessories. Yes, a little over budget assuming $700 is your limit. However, it's worth it for the increased sound quality. The ELAC Debut series are one of the hottest speaker lines out there right now, and most reviewers agree that they're worth every penny. There are also alternatives in this ballpark by EMP Tek, Chane, Infinity, etc.

Why no rears? You sacrifice too much in the front speakers by trying to get the whole system at once in the budget. As a matter of fact, if you wanted to you could skip the center channel as well and just buy a 2.1 to start. Remember though that any system you buy needs to be the same series across the front three. You can either purchase identical speakers for the rears later, or look at dipole/bipole speakers, or purchase some cheap speakers off Craigslist for rears. Now, all of this is assuming that you don't have any audio gear. If you already have some older bookshelf speakers, you can use those for surrounds, etc.

u/scottymoze · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Just my two cents, you could do the Best Buy $300 on speakers and like you said get whatever 5.1+ receiver elsewhere. Best Buy will price match Amazon if it's "shipped and sold" by Amazon. So for example you could get the Pioneer towers and center channel for around $300:

Pioneer SP-FS52 Andrew Jones Tower each $110 Amazon (x2 for $220) / $125 Best Buy (x2 for $250)

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS52-Designed-standing-Loudspeaker/dp/B008NCD2S4/

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-5-1-4-floor-speaker-each-black/5086937.p?skuId=5086937

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-dual-4-center-channel-speaker-black/5086891.p?skuId=5086891

Total if you Amazon price match = $305 before tax

EDIT: just be sure to factor in cables/speaker wire to total budget, and make sure everything will fit and has a proper place to be setup. and don't overlook a universal remote if that's an option/need. :)

I finally found a console table worth sharing with you guys.

I moved to a new place back in March and I haven't had anywhere to set up my turntable. I convinced my boyfriend that this wall was lonely and (since it's in our living room) it would totally get a lot of use. I know my collection isn't super huge, but it's great for me at the moment. I'm planning on actually plugging it all in this weekend at some point when I have more time, since this was the final piece of the "we have too many devices in our living room" puzzle.

Got the furniture from Etsy. Super smooth transaction, great shipping. It's all made by hand and I can't recommend it more. It's literally perfect for our space (the shop owner even customized the length for me). I'm in love with it.

u/jackasher · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I'm on a tighter budget than you, but I just set up a nice little system with a SMSL SA50 50Wx2 TDA7492 Class D Amplifier and a set of Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf Loudspeakers without a sub. Add a sub to that you'll have a nice sounding set-up under budget that should last you well beyond your time at college.

In addition to this subreddit, here's what I used for guidance:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Zeos/comments/66ylk9/guide_speakers_2021_desktoproom_systems/
and
https://www.reddit.com/r/AverageJoeAudiophile/comments/3uoksp/i_have_xxxxx_to_spend_what_should_i_buy_bookshelf/

For considering which sub you want:

and
https://www.reddit.com/r/Zeos/comments/5b1u99/guide_subwoofers/

If you sign up for promo codes for Fry's and check every Sunday, the SP-BS22-LR Pioneer's can be had for $62 as they seem to go on sale around once a month. Actually if you can get a promo code from someone today, you can order them this evening at that price. Even at $129, they're considered a good value.

Pricewise you'd be looking at: $62 Pioneer SP-BS22-LR + $69 SMSL SA50 + $180 for the ELAC S10 or something comparable + $30 for speaker wire, plugs and cables to connect to your source and $341 total

This will be plenty loud to fill any dorm room (and drive your neighbors crazy if you're not careful) with much better sound quality than a soundbar or a 2.1 system like a Klipsch Promedia 2.1.

As for the bluetooth, buy a separate bluetooth adapter. You'll have more utility that way rather than buying one that's integrated into your receiver or amp. This way you'll only need to upgrade your bluetooth receiver when bluetooth is inevitably upgraded in the next few years. Your receiver and speakers can last you decades.

These have been getting some good user reviews lately and a nice price too, and a pretty small cabinet for a 6.5 inch woofer, 79.99 / pair: 2 Pack 6.5" Bookshelf Home Theater Speakers 100W RMS TP160S-CH DCM by MTX Audio

As for amp's I have two of these (on two different computer systems), Dayton Audio APA 150. This is a serious Class A/B design topology, but no frills, just a well built, serious, "old school" heavy amp. No remote, no DAC, no Bluetooth, but WOW, a really nice, serious, amp! Lots of good user reviews and recommendations all over the net.

A often recommended smaller digital amp S.M.S.L AD18. This one DOES have it all, remote, DAC, bluetooth, relatively small, great reviews all over the net.

If you are really on a budget, try something similar to Lepai LP-2020TI Digital Hi-Fi Audio Mini Class D Stereo Amplifier. Do some searches for tweaking this amp, a very simple way to improve this amp, is to buy a more powerful power brick. There are many versions of this type of amp, amazon, ebay, parts-express, look around.

The other two, often recommended, "great value" speakers that work well with a computer (but you will need an amp), are the Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver Bookshelf Speaker System (Pair). I have seen these on sale for well under 100/pair, from memory, in the 60's and 70's.

Another great value is the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf Loudspeakers(7-1/8” x 12-9/16” x 8-7/16” & weighs 9 lbs 2 oz). Again, search around, these do go on sale for well under 100.00.

I have both the Pioneer and the Sony, and I currently am using the Sony SSCS5 with the Dayton Audio Amp. Was temped to buy the DCM, but I have to stop buying "great value" speakers. If I ever want to upgrade my computer speakers, I should save up and buy the Ascend Audio Luna Reference Ribbon Mini-Monitor.

Good luck, have fun, and Enjoy!

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Bookshelf Speakers are on sale for <$50/pair right now (never been this low). Grab 4 of those with the matching center and a subwoofer of choice and you’re off to 5.1 land.

Can you identify the cartridge? A replacement stylus generally costs less than a new cartridge.

So let's say you spend $35 on the stylus. If you look for a stereo receiver from the 90s (like a Sony) you can get one for ~$50. Then spend a good amount on speakers. A few months ago there was a sale on these and the price was $60 for the floorstanding speakers. That's a steal.

u/jallsopp · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

SMSL SA50 and Pioneer SP-BS22-LR are a popular combination and should sound pretty good.

u/patsfacts · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

if you are just looking for good, inexpensive stereo bookshelf speakers that will last a while, I'd recommend these. You'll still need a receiver, but these speakers sound about as good as you're going to get for under $700, are well made, and can be found for under $100 for the pair quite often.

EDIT: They're $89 right now if you have Amazon Prime

Samson makes some desktop monitors that feature bluetooth input. I haven't really seen any reviews for them yet. The MediaOne

Take a look at reviews for those and get at least the 4" ones. I can't expect the 3" ones would have much bass response.

Everything else listed lacks bluetooth, but you could add a standalone bluetooth reciever to any of them.

The M-Audio AV-40s get good reviews, and the Wirecutter calls them the best computer speakers.

Those are active monitors. They will be good for near field, and the amp inside them is designed with the speakers.

If you go passive plus amp you can upgrade components down the road. Maybe get the Micca MB42X and a Topping TP20, or find a good reciever (70s Kenwood, Pioneer, Marantz, Teac, Technics, etc. are great) for super cheap (0-$20) at a yard sale or thrift store or craigslist and get the Panasonic SP-BS22

u/CoupleTryingGWout · 3 pointsr/hometheater

With your budget, if you don't want to go modular and add the pieces as you go along and get a 5.1 right away, think this seems like a decent package that you'll be very happy with for a good couple of years:

These Pionneer towers x2

And the surrounds

And center that go with the set

This sub seems very well liked around here

The amp you mentionned (I have had RX-V657 for years, very good) is also very good an will be plenty

rest on cables and stuff if you need, go to http://www.monoprice.com

All that should come in around your budget!

Cheers and have fun!

u/Olgaar · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Are you planning to use Surrounds? I can't help but feel surrounds would be a little awkward in your room. I'd recommend a 3.0 or 3.1 system. Here's some equipment to start taking a look at.

Speakers:

  • Hsu Research 3.0 package in black $519 - These are 8" deep--I know size is important to you. This is a quality setup, but probably doesn't allow budget for a sub.
  • Pioneer Andrew Jones Bookshelves + Center $230 - that price include the center and bookshelves. 7.1" deep. This frees up money in the budget for a sub.
  • HTD Middy Compact $267 - You'd use three of these speakers, one for left, one for right, one for center. 5.25" deep. Don't use these without a sub--in fact, make sure you buy a high quality sub if you intend to use these. Not neccaserily a sub that digs ultra deep, but one that can handle mid-bass well.
  • HTD Flat Panel Speaker $450 - These look like a 3-way version of the Middy's. You'd use and mount them same as the Middy's. Probably puts you back in a position of not having money for a sub, but these little guys might put out enough bass to keep you happy. Which is NOT to say they would output subwoofer-like bass... nothing replaces a true subwoofer. 4.25" deep.

I've only heard the Hsu's and the Pioneers in person. Without going in to detail, I reccomend them both. If you're not a demanding listener, save the money and go with the Pioneers. If you are, I think the Hsu's are worth the extra cost. I haven't heard the HTD's but they might just be the right solution for you based on form factor.

    Subwoofers:

  • Hsu STF-1 $315 shipped.
  • BIC F12 $200
  • Dayton Sub1200 $110

That's basically the sub I would recommend at each one of those price points.

    Receivers

I'm personally not a good source to reccomend receivers... just pick a 5.1 by a brand you like and at the price you can afford. Personally I've worked with Denon's and found nothing to complain about with them.
u/bofhforever · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

How do these compare to his Pioneer bookshelfs that are somewhat the gold standard of cheap bookshelf speakers. They frequently go on sale for 70 or 80 bucks a pair at Fry's.

This Kenwood might be worth looking in to. Here's some additional info on it. You might be able to get the price down a little bit.

As for speakers, you can try the Pioneer BS22 speakers. You can check your local Best Buy and test them out yourself. They are pretty inexpensive and sound great. Amazon has them for $99

u/BearJew13 · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I'm leaning towards it. Any cheap decent speakers you recommend with it? I found a few reddit threads that recommended these for $100. Ideally I'd like to spend less but it still seems like a decent deal

u/automaticfantastic · 2 pointsr/Metal

What's your current setup like? Are you trying to plug in an digital music source (computer or ipod) or play records, tapes and CDs?

If you already have a good receiver, the Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers are currently $90 on Amazon, which is a goddamn steal for a pair of well-respected passive bookshelf speakers.

u/m1kepro · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I ended up tightening my budget quite a bit on this new home theater, so some of my choices aren't as nice as what I had before, but I'm very happy with what I got in the end. I want to thank everyone who gave me advice in my last post here. It was all very helpful!

I went with a 65" Samsung 120Hz smart TV. I decided against getting the 240Hz because I couldn't see a difference between the two when looking at it, and the 3D makes my wife sick in any case. That saved me almost $500.

For the receiver, I took everyone's advice and opted away from the all-in-one set I'd been looking at. Instead, I got a great price on a Pioneer VSX-824 that I've been very happy with.

I know the Denon reciever is what everyone recommended, and it's what I bought at first, but strangely enough my PS3 didn't work with it. It worked just fine connected to the TV directly, and other devices worked with that HDMI cable and port, but the PS3 just told me to go fuck myself. A quick google search told me that it's a flaw in the way the HDMI handshake works with Denon receivers, so back it went.

I went with Pioneer speakers as well, hooking up a
pair of tower speakers for front left and right, a pair of matching bookshelf speakers for the rear, and the matching center speaker.

The subwoofer will have to wait, for now, but the plan is to purchase the matching subwoofer when we're ready.

Instead of the Harmony Ultimate, which didn't seem to get any good remarks, I opted for the much cheaper Harmony 650, which has made my wife very happy. No more frayed tempers about what button does what on which remote. I'm even buying my parents one for Christmas.

I'm hugely pleased with the upgrade over my previous setup, even if it's not everything it could have been. What do you all think?

  1. What is your budget?

    $100-$300

  2. What are you looking for?

2.0 Speakers either tower or bookshelf and possibly a receiver but am considering the SMSL Q5.

  3. How will you typically be using the gear?

Will be used in the living room for mostly 90% tv shows and movies, 9% music and 1% video games.

  4. What gear do you own?

None relating to this new setup.

  5. What do you intend on using for a source?

Roku 2 XS to television to optical out from television to SMSL Q5(planning on purchasing this)

  6. What material will you be using your gear for?

Will be used in the living room for mostly 90% tv shows and movies, 9% music and 1% video games. Music taste for myself in order is rap, rock, edm, classical; for my wife it's Top 40 on the billboards.

  7. Are you willing to buy used?

    Yes: http://portland.craigslist.org/

    B&W 201i Bookshelf Speakers $80 a pair

Original NHT SuperZero Speakers $80 a pair

I take it your a student just working part time then? Are you in a (relatively) big city? If so, I'd recommend going down the used route. You can get some really incredible stuff for next to nothing, and it's pretty fun too.

My main living room setup is a pair of B&W speakers powered by an Adcom amp. Fairly high-end stuff. Total was less than $80. If you're interested in buying used stuff, I'd be happy to explain the basics of what to look for.

Otherwise, I'd probably say start with 2.0 then upgrade to 2.1 (or beyond) over time. These Pioneer speakers are a good starting point. You could use this amp to power them, or I'd try to find a used Pioneer or Onkyo receiver (<$50).

Total around $600. If you wanted, you could invest a bit more into the front L/R channel speakers (or the subwoofer)

If you are looking for minimal trouble and just want a home theatre as easy as possible, you obviously would be giving up sound quality for something easier to work with. so the bose would work. Just go off your instinct :D Like the other mentions if you are happy with how the bose system sounds, then it would be a great deal.

what is your budget? I am a big proponent of passive speakers with a separate amp/dac. They sound the best to me. They do tend to take a lot of space though, so it may be tough with a smaller desk. If you want powered speakers though, the edifiers have been the best in my experience.

My current setup is:

AMP: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0H8TOC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(note: this amp doesnt support subwoofers, so look elsewhere if you want a 2.1 system. In my experience I haven't felt the need for one, but YMMV)

DAC: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SY9RBOM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you want to go the passive route, a decent setup would probably be around $150-200. If you want something with a tuner, a receiver would be a good choice over an amp.

Right now, you can get this Yamaha R-S202BL Stereo Receiver on Amazon or Best Buy for $119 which is an excellent deal. Usually this receiver costs $149 or more and Yamaha makes some of the best budget stereo receivers. Sometimes you can find this Insignia Stereo Receiver for about $99, but right now it costs higher than the Yamaha and is not worth it. Those are probably your best deals on receivers right now that won't break the bank. Most other receivers will cost you about $150 to start.

You can find a lot of good speakers under $150 and a few under $100. What you need to do is sign up for Fry's Electronics newsletter. Just this last week they sent a coupon code in my email to get the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers for $58! Super good deal. Normally cost just over $100. They are sold out now, but this deal pops up quite often and they are well worth that price.

Here are more great speakers around $100 or less:

Micca MB42X speakers - $90.

Polk T15 - $100

Dayton Audio B652 - $30

Dayton Audio B652-AIR - $44

JBL Arena B15 - $79

Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-BS22 bookshelves are great entry level units that regularly go for $60 shipped for the pair. The floorstanders are also great for about 80% more.

I picked up two of these for $49 each. If you need something with video input, I know there are many receivers in the $150-200 range with 5.1/7.1 output. They come and go in price and availability so often, i can't recommend a cheap one by model, specifically. Denon and Onkyo do well, and I really like Yamaha for basics. The receiver is generally the most difficult thing to swap in and out at a later time, so if a deal presents itself, or if budget allows to get closer to $300-400, you can gain a lot, and be able to support more mid-level gear.

Don't tell your audiophile friends you own it, but the original Monoprice Subwoofer goes on sale regularly. I bought one for a friend @ $70 plus some shipping.

A 2.1 setup like this is a dramatic change from any soundbar that isn't $400 or more (and some ~$1,000), generally speaking. Expand or exchange components as Craigslist, availability, and budget allows. I am not a baller that can afford ridiculous setups, but I have a variety of nice things. I have built budget setups of all kinds for clients and friends. I like my stuff, but I would enjoy a movie on a setup like this at a friend's house so much more than a TV over the fireplace with a soundbar on the mantle.

u/stonedboss · 2 pointsr/buildapc

For $300 you should be looking in budget audiophile and not buildapc. That being said, after searching budget audiophile myself for hours on end this is what I came to as being the best sub $300 setup (that I am currently using):

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Bookshelf Loudspeakers with a Dayton Audio Digital Amplifier 15 WPC, with the speakers on SANUS 31" Speaker Stands.

This setup sounds amazing and it will be better than any PC speakers you can get. Keep in mind you do have to buy some speaker wire, but the setup is a breeze as the only tool you need is a pair of wire-cutters to get the wire to size.

u/theBullMousse · 2 pointsr/raspberry_pi

yup, definitely going the Raspbmc route, so that's good news about the HD.

My current setup consists of Pioneer SP-FS52-LRs to my dad's old Sansui AU-5900 amp. It's an integrated amp so I guess I don't need a DAC.

Also, yes, I have an extra Ethernet cable on hand so I'm using that.

u/cmdrmcgarrett · 2 pointsr/audiophile

They are ok if you just want noise.

Need more info from you tho. Is this just for background music? Theater use? Etc.

I would look into [These] (https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_23_lp_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=AZZ6527AT7HHKN9R38C3) when they go on sale. With that amp you talked about you will be a lot happier

u/grizzlybee · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I think most people here would recommend you don't get a soundbar unless it's your only option. A used receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers like these would sound much better and could be upgraded to a full system later on if you wanted.

u/Zorbak1199 · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I'm also considering getting something like this amp and these speakers as well to go the passive route. From what I understand, this amp can power the speakers, correct? Also, I'm going to need RCA from turntable to pre amp, and RCA from pre amp to amp. Then from amp go to one speaker with speaker wire, then one speaker to the other with speaker wire, so in total 8 banana plugs right?

u/bradAHA · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Miccas probably aren't that much better than the Fluance, though I've only heard the Miccas. If you wanted to go 3.1, I'd go with at least Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers, $200 for the main 3 speakers.

What's your budget? Based off your table (no hate, I have the same one), I'm going to assume you're in a similar situation as me. Pick one of these three up:

Honestly, I would do them from top to bottom but that is just preference. I would buy any of them any day, but I am partial to the top because I love the look, and the middle one because of the history behind the maker. The middle ones have an insane amount of cult following in the audiophile community because they were designed by a guy who designs speakers that cost 10,000+ a piece.

Id reccomend taking a look at These speakers. Ive heard several good things about them.

I personally use and love JBL loft 40s, however I only paid $50 for them and would probably not recommend them at full retail price.

u/picmandan · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Ok, I know this isn't what you're looking for, but...

Have you considered a good set of headphones? You can get some nice cans in that price range.

That said, speakers:

I recently picked up the newer Micca MB42x, and was really surprised by how good they sound given their price and size, in particular with their bass output. I found the midrange to be smooth and not lacking, and that the speakers had nice detail. Not Klipsch horn style detail (so if you're into that the Micca's may disappoint.) I'm not, and I like the Miccas. I find them a little laid back and easy to listen to.

To sound best, they do need some breathing room behind them to allow the port to work for bass output. It doesn't seem like you have space for that though. So pairing with a sub would be good.

The recommendation elsewhere in the comments for the 12" Dayton Audio sub is a good one, but it's a 12-incher. Fairly compact for a 12" sub, but still a decent size box. If you don't have room for that box, you may like something like the Dayton Audio SUB-800 or the Pioneer SW-8. Both have pretty decent extension for all but the deepest music, and would be fun with movies if not necessarily house-shaking.

If you can afford more space for the main speakers, I'd suggest you also consider the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR. I haven't heard them but they seem to be a slight step up in audio quality versus the Miccas because they're larger. But then, well, they're larger.

Sounds like you might be very underwhelmed with the setup only 250 can get you. Especially with the setup you already have. But if these can make it up to you maybe a 2.0 system would be a good start and work from there later on.

Scroll through these bookshelf speaker for some good ideas. The kef q150, jbl stage, wharfdale diamond, polk signature 15, Elac debut b5.2. All good starts to a system.

The ever-popular Pioneer BS-22 are cheap and would be a big upgrade over your soundbar. They were my first speakers and they punch well above their price.

u/FeistyPotato · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I would instead get this receiver, and these speakers, and this center channel. This would be $20 cheaper than the Denon DM40SBK D-M40 you linked, it would sound better, and it has better "upgradeability."

u/burgerbob22 · 2 pointsr/vintageaudio

This is probably would I would get (and plan to in the near future).

I'm 16 and have a fairly small room, I don't know much about this kind of stuff, I was wondering if I could hook up [these Pioneer SP BS22 speakers] (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=zg_bs_3236451011_5) along with this [Logitech Bluetooth adapter] (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/bluetooth-audio-adapter) to stream music from my iPhone. Would I absolutely need anything else for a bare minimum setup, like an amp or receiver - I'm not really clear what they do or how necessary they are.

Additionally are there other speakers that would be better for me? (cheap is a plus) I listen to a huge variety of music, so I feel like clarity is above all rather than focus on just bass or something like that. Thanks in advance!

u/bagelchips · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I assume you want small speakers (not floorstanding "tower" speakers.) Do you want speakers to sit on your desk while you sit at your desk? In this case you may want small powered monitors.

Or larger speakers with a larger listening range? Look into bookshelves like the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR.

If you can provide some more context the members here can provide better specific recommendations. There are also many good recommendations at /r/zeos.

u/evDev84 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Putting audio equipment in a closed environment runs risk of heat damage. You'll want some place that gets air or invest in some way to circulate the air.

This is a front blowing rack cooler for 80 bucks. Whatever receiver you get, stack this on top and let the heat get sucked out of the front of the cabinet AC Infinity AIRCOM S10, Quiet Cooling Blower Fan System 17" Front-Exhaust for Receivers, Amps, DVR, AV Cabinet Components https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078PX4575/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iAmKDbVFG2Q0T

As far as a nice atmos setup, essentially from what I've read the atmos positions supported by the specs are all ceiling positions, and you've got all those shelves, so actually might be doable. Maybe some small compact speakers for everything would do nicely here along with a decent sub.

As far as speaker selection goes, if you're on a budget, I've heard great things about these pioneer AJ bookshelf speakers: Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf Loudspeakers(7-1/8" x 12-9/16" x 8-7/16" & weighs 9 lbs 2 oz) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_FymKDbX0SJ7J2

Otherwise if you can afford a bit better, Q Accoustics makes excellent compact bookshelf speakers for basically $100 a speaker.

The atmos speakers themselves don't need to be top of the line. They need to be able to handle like 150hz and above. Something like the Micca convo-s could work.

As far as a sub goes, the SVS SB1000 seems to be the go-to around here for best price to performance at the "entry level" of decent home theater experience. $500

Receiver is entirely up to you but get something with decent room correction. The x1500h is not bad. The x1600h is out and has eARC support but is a few hundred dollars more since it's new.

That honestly should give you everything for a superb experience in this space.

u/AM_key_bumps · 2 pointsr/vinyl

If you've got a kennie TT you're already off to a good start. You've got $250 to spend, so I'd do this:

Sherwood RX-4109 105 Watt Stereo Receiver for $130. It has a phono-pre so you're good there. No bluetooth, but a simple 3.5 (headphone) to RCA (red/white in back of stereo) cable and you'll be up and running with the phone.

http://www.amazon.com/Sherwood-RX-4109-Stereo-Receiver-Black/dp/B000MBUSD6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418232854&sr=8-1&keywords=sherwood&pebp=1418232858915

Then pair that sucker with some Pioneer SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speakers.

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=sr_1_5?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1418233269&sr=1-5&keywords=speakers

That Kenwood deserves a more traditional setup, not some powered speaker hoo-hah. I mean, powered speakers will work, and probably sound nice, but if you're gonna do it, do it right!

u/ldeas_man · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

unless you plan on buying an Atmos-supported receiver and running surround sound, you will get no benefit from those speakers. the normal non-Atmos speakers are currently $99 right now, so I'd suggest just getting those instead

>is it fine to buy a <$50 amp or should I hunt for a used one on craigslist/facebook?

nah, that's fine. people over estimate the power they need, especially for desk setups. 10W continuous @ 8ohms is more than enough for the majority of circumstances, and you can find a lot of amplifiers with that much power for $50. this SMSL SA-36A should be fine for you. but again there's a good amount of options out there. I'd only recommend buying used if you want/need more power, but that's not really applicable in your case. and for $50, even used, you're gonna mostly find 10+ year old AV receivers, with not many useful features (no HDMI, no bluetooth, no wifi, etc)

u/MisterHays · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

The Pioneer BS 22s are recommended quite a bit in that price range. They're a touch on the warm side so if your looking for detailed sparkling highs you might look at something else.

Also since those are a bit under your budget you might consider picking up a SMSL SA36 instead of the lepai. They should be pretty similar, but the SMSL will probably go a little louder before distorting.

u/Freelancer05 · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I've had the pretty common beginner setup for about 6 months now:

TT: AT-LP120 (built in preamp)

Amp: Lepai 2020A+

Speakers: Dayton B652's

I had noticed that my current setup lacks quite a bit of bass/low-range sound, resulting in a somewhat flat sound. I was considering upgrading the following:

Speakers: Pioneer SP-BS22-LR ($129.99 on Amazon)

Amp: SMSL SA50 ($68.90 on Amazon)

Will I get a noticeable difference out of this upgrade? Or would my money be put to better use elsewhere?

u/www-ListenUp-com · 2 pointsr/audiophile

You'll probably want to look into speakers then an amp in that order. Speakers tend to be the most subjective and personal piece of the setup, so get those squared away, then figure out what to drive them with.

For speakers, check out:

I bought my speakers and receiver off of craigslist, so that is where its up to you how much you want to spend I know Pioneer, Realistic, Kenwood all made some great receivers in the 70's that could be picked up for pretty cheap, just make sure they work. when it comes to new I got nothing for you, but somebody might help you with that I know there is a Marantz receiver I keep seeing posted with setups its a modern day one. Speakers again how big of a room you working with, you don't need some huge loudspeakers bookshelf are a good area to look at these are good ones to get new nice sound.

u/SchroedingersHat · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Anything bluetooth/portable will be way less value for money so only do that if you need it to be bluetooth/portable.

I would second the recommendation for passive speakers, but for your use case maybe also consider slightly cheaper speakers than most around here would recommend, and pairing it with a sub.

Something like this sub or this
With a small amp like this

And then spend the remaining 120-170 on some passive bookshelf speakers [(a list)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AverageJoeAudiophile/comments/3uoksp /i_have_xxxxx_to_spend_what_should_i_buy_bookshelf/)

Someone else may help you narrow down which speakers. Edit: The Pioneer BS22 looks like a good option.

u/HiddenTentacles · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I wouldn't pick up one of those amps. One of the features for one of them is that they don't spark when plugging power in.

For an amp, try this Micca Origain.

If you have the room, a receiver might be better for you. This Yamaha R-S202 would work well, but only works with 8 ohm speakers.

For speakers, you have a few options.

Klipsch R-14M

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR(6 ohm)

The Micca MB42X when they come back in stock.

Also, if you can build them, C-Note Speaker Kit. These will be better than any other cheap speaker you can find new. Will need around $50-100 in tools to build them.

As far as cheap subs go, this Dayton Audio SUB-1000 might be your best bet.

if you learn what to look for, craigslist

for new speakers, pioneer sp-bs22-lr's look aight with the grilles off and are unmatched at their price point quality-wise

for vintage, JBL 4312mk2s look and sound awesome imo, but they're pricey

pioneer cs-a700 (also known as cs-e700) also has a good combination of looks, sound and price. evidently the stones had a pair back in the day

I'm personally on the hunt for a pair of yamaha ns-500m. their bigger brothers, the ns-1000m and ns-2000, go for a lot of money. the ns-500m shares the same tweeter as the 1000m, and supposedly sounds really close when A/B'd, though the 1000m edges it out.. but at a much higher price

anyway audiokarma is my favorite forum for finding info about vintage speakers (as well as the amps you'll need to power them with), but there's a LOT to dig through

u/jankenpwn · 2 pointsr/audiophile

No need to power the sub as long as you get one with a built in amplifier (most have this).

The wattage rating for amps usually means per channel. So for a stereo amp with 50 watts, you're looking at 50 watts per speaker.

The monoprice stuff is not bad overall. Take a look at Dayton's sub in that price range also, and then for speakers you might look at Pioneer's bookshelf speakers too.

u/1369ic · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Not sure why you would want the l/r and the center, other than it's a good deal. Are you hoping to fill it out to 5.1 eventually?

I've never heard Fluance, but the go-to recommendations around here are one of these two Pioneer speakers, or the Miccas. Search this sub to look for reviews (and double check the model numbers if you're interested. I'm doing this from memory). If you get the Pioneers you should be able to afford the subwoofer that goes with it. Also, you can usually find a Polk sub like this one on sale.

There are better options, I'm sure, but these get a lot of recommendations for budget systems. I have a brother in law with the Pioneers and no sub and he's pretty happy.

As for hooking it up, you just need a 3.5mm to RCA jack cable like this one. Also, if your receiver has an s/pdif input you could go from the sound card to the receiver that way. If you use the first cable, the sound card will be decoding the digital into analog. If you use the s/pdif cable, your receiver will do the decoding. Depending on the DACs in the card and receiver, one might be better than the other.

For reasons too boring and complicated to get into here, I bought a pair of Pioneer BS22's as a cheap, temporary speaker system. I liked them so much they ended up being permanent.

u/warrennuila · 2 pointsr/hometheater

It really doesn’t make sense to buy two individual speakers instead of a sound bar without also buying a receiver. Any speakers that you could find that connected directly to the TV aren’t going to be producing anything better than a sound bar.

If you’re not interested in investing in a full blown sound system, then a sound bar is probably for you. Obviously the quality of a sound bar is far lower, but it’s a big step up from built in TV speakers.

I think it’s really worth it to build a proper surround sound set up. If you’re not ready to invest in that yet, you might consider starting with a receiver and two speakers and build the rest over time.

Here’s some recommendations for good starter equipment:

https://www.lifewire.com/best-home-theater-receivers-400-or-less-1846333

They make matching center channels and subs for both speakers and sell them in the whole 5.1 bundle as well

u/DZCreeper · 2 pointsr/hometheater

First, can you move the TV? Above the fireplace is the worst place possible. If not, a pulldown mount + VESA shelf adaptor to hold the centre channel would be good.

Room looks a bit cramped, I would go for a good 3.1 setup instead of 5.1.

Subwoofer choices are tough, not much worth buying below $300 Canadian. Best bet is to check the used market and avoid anything low tier. Even without a sub, this setup will sound better than the soundbar by a mile.

u/JayRP · 2 pointsr/vinyl

u/the_monster_consumer · 2 pointsr/audiophile

I personally find surround to be a gimmick. Especially at this price point you get so much more from investing in a decent pair of stereo speakers than if you have to spread your money across 5 speakers.

If you could live without the soundcard and just use USB, I would spend just over $250 and get Pioneer SP-BS22-LR (just google reviews of these speakers), a Topping TP22 amp, and a HiFiMeDIY Sabre USB DAC. You will also need speaker cable, and a RCA to 3.5mm cable.

My left speaker does not work properly. There are times sounds comes out and other times no sound comes out. The right speaker does not have this issue. I am thinking the speaker wire may be the issue. I don't think I cut it properly and left too much bare wire exposed. Also, the ends when I put to the receiver get frayed really easily. I will recut wire and try again. But would there be any other reason for why my left speaker isn't working properly? Could it be the receiver? I have a Sony TA-AX401 amplifier. Speakers (having a hard time deciding between these 3)
very slightly leaning towers pioneer just cause I would want to get tower version and move bookshelf ones to the back. How does these 3 compare. I mainly will use it for movies and some music.

In commercial theaters with height channels, the speakers are pointed backwards a bit. It's hard to find images that illustrate this, but you'll see it in AMC's new Dolby Cinema theaters. Depending on the slope of your ceiling and the proximity of the speakers to the couch, it might not be ideal, but it's rare to have a 100% ideal theater room.

I read earlier today on this sub about Speakercraft's AIM series. If you have the money for it, then it might make sense to replace the JBLs with those. As far as alternatives for the other speakers, I'm not really sure. BIC America's Acoustec speakers are approximately the same color if you decide to run them without a grille (of that's really important to you), but they use horn tweeters, so they likely have the same level of brightness as Klipsch. I'll check the buying guide for another one that I don't remember the name of and report back.

Edit: Checked the guide.

On the slightly cheaper end, there's the Pioneer Andrew Jones series. Pioneer makes good speakers, but stay away from their receivers; Pioneer is owned by Onkyo now, and that brings Onkyo's build quality issues with it. Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and Harman/Kardon are the companies that you should look at for receivers.

Bookshelf, Center, Tower

On the slightly more expensive end, there's the aforementioned BIC America speakers. Bookshelf, LCR (Left/Center/Right), Tower

Okay so I've put together a system that I think will work pretty well based on the comments and reviews of products listed here.

I'm going with:

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR for the speaker set. Amazon warehousedeals for $78

PIONEER VSX-530-K For the receiver. Going to use an optical cable to connect it. Promo this week for $30 off brings the total shipped $129

The total comes out to around ~$210 which I think is pretty awesome for the set. And I'm going to save up to get a Dayton Audio SUB-1000 from Amazon warehousedeals for $99.

My question now is, do you guys think this setup will be good for the type of content I will be consuming? Thank you for all your help!

u/United08 · 1 pointr/hometheater

With your budget, I'd recommend a 2.1 system consisting of:

Pioneer BS22 bookshelf L&R

Dayton 1200 subwoofer

Let the sub handle the low frequencies. This will be much more effective than a pair of the Pioneer towers with no suwoofer.

u/jiffy_park · 1 pointr/audiophile

which of these three speakers would you recommend? I plan on getting a turntable and receiver to hook them up to, and they'd for now be used just in my bedroom and eventually possibly in a smaller apartment living room or such. this will be my first setup, so I want to make sure I get something that will give me good sound and last for awhile before I can upgrade down the road. the options that I've found to seem like the best are:

pioneer bs-22. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008NCD2LG/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1395946696&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40

u/Cynthia06 · 1 pointr/vinyl

Yes, it is. I know someone who has one. It has a built-in phono preamp, but you don't want to use it while the one in the turntable is on. If you use the turntable's preamp, you plug in the turntable on another input besides "phono". That receiver would be a good fit for these highly-regarded speakers which are on sale right now -

Alright so im sold on the Technics TT. Sadly the person with the sansui reciver is too far away for me to get to easily. So what im looking at right now is

Sherwood RX-4109 stereo receiver

BS-22 (prefer these over the floor standing ones because of price and size)

Is there anything else you recommend that would complete this setup or make it better?

u/mlph · 1 pointr/Zeos

Hey Zeo, could you go over my first set-up and see if everything would work together? Here's what I got so far:

Behringer UAC202 DAC

Sherwood RX-4109 105 Watt Stereo Receiver - Any opinion on this? It seems really good for the price but seems like a gamble from what I read.

Pioneer BS22 - I've heard the BS22s are very power hungry which is why I decided the above receiver would be a good match for it.

From my understanding it would go something like this:

Laptop <--DAC <--RCA--> Sherwood Receiver --> BS22

Is that correct? And would I benefit significantly from purchasing a subwoofer?

u/SubwooferMonster · 1 pointr/audio

I don't live in Europe anymore so I don't know what websites you guys use. I'm going to link what the American version is and you can probably find a website in Europe that has them for near the same price. It's slightly over budget by about 50 bucks, but, I'd be lying if these bookshelfs and amp are not some of the best I've ever put my hands on while still on a budget.

[Amplifier] (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/yamaha-200w-2-ch-stereo-receiver-black/5037100.p?skuId=5037100&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=cb12c1b5-f826-4bcf-972c-b3a5386e8150&ksprof_id=16&ksaffcode=pg118898&ksdevice=c&lsft=ref:212,loc:2&gclid=CL6wgqzTs9ACFReXfgod3rAH1w)

I use those bookshelfs for my home setup and I also have two 12'' subwoofers under the desk hooked up to 3000 watts. Sometimes, I shit you not I'll walk over to the gain on my subwoofer amp and turn it down because the bass is just rolling, but it's the bookshelf speakers that are producing those lows and I'll be blown away. Music and movies are a great experience and for 60 bucks a speaker It's the best deal as far as sound quality goes. I would put them on mark with some of the reference monitors are use at work.

I used the receiver in a build I did and I like it, functionality is great. It doesn't have a sub out but it has input options and supports bluetooth. I'd get a RCA to 1/8th TRS cable aswell. You don't really need a subwoofer with these speakers, they imitate having a 8'' (50w) sub under the desk pretty much.

I need help...(scroll down for TL:DR) My turntable needs to get louder and have more low end. My receiver is usually blaring when gaming or watching TV at "-10 db" however when I play my turn table at the same setting it is quieter. Not silent or really low mind you, but not quite as loud. When I turn up my receiver higher to compensate it will eventually go into protection mode and turn itself off (no bueno, I know).

Here is my setup:

Turntable: Technics SL-1300
Cartridge: Shure M97xE
Receiver: Denon AVR-391
Pre-Amp: Behringer PP400

Speakers:

Front Bookshelf Speakers: Panasonic SP-BS22-LR
Rear Speakers: Polk TL1
Center Speaker: Polk TL1 Center
Woofer: Pioneer SW-8MK

So, as you can see, for speakers I have a 5.1 speaker set up. I can run my turntable in Pro Logic, Multi-Channel Stereo, Stereo, Direct (whatever that means), Virtual, and DTS Neo. I am not really sure what would be best but I would like to use a setting that also uses my subwoofer as it is it's own powered speaker. Is that ok for the receiver to split it into Pro Logic or something else from the analog signal or not? As far as my connection I have the RCA cord coming from my pre-amp and connected to my "Dock" RCA input which is 1 of 3 RCA inputs on my receiver (Dock, Sat, DVD). Also my turntable is grounded to my preamp.

I am at a loss of what to do as it's never quite loud enough for my liking. I don't need it to be breaking windows but I would like to be able to rock out once and awhile.

TL:DR I guess what I'm asking is what setting should my Receiver be on and would a new pre-amp increase my volume?

u/helpChars · 1 pointr/hometheater

Great!

Try these settings that Fairchild, a forum member, posted up on AVSforums. He calibrated it using professional tools for a darker room, so it might work for you. Otherwise, perusing/searching the forums should net you some more settings that worked for other people.

Best Buy has excellent deals on the Denon 1613/1713/1913 speakers right now. They’re all on clearance or in excellent condition as open box items. The Denon 1713, for example, I was able to buy for 199 before taxes (amazon still shows it as 378.99).

To check online stock, do the following:

Go to the store locator -> Enter zip/address -> click on the stores that are closest to you within the search results -> for each individual store website, click “Open Box and Clearance Items” on the left side -> Shop this store (in blue) -> Under “Shop Best Buy” (left side pane), click “Audio & MP3” -> Under Narrow your results, choose Denon as your brand.

Hopefully you’ll find some good sales.

Speakers.
I’ve thought about the Pioneer SP BS-22 and the Polk 30s. You really can’t go wrong with either, but you just missed a sale where the Pioneers were going for $70.

Depending on what L/Rs you go with, you’d get the matching center channel from their respective manufacturers.

Subs, for our budget, the consensus seems to be the Bic America F12, but others have stated that a better alternative may be the Polk Audio PSW505.

The gist, I think, was that the Polks would perform better if you listen to a lot of music.

Anyways, that’s where I am with my research. My goal is to save as much money as I can, but to spend when necessary to fulfill my needs. I hope that television works out for you. We’ve loved ours and the calibration went a long way. Happy shopping!

Sure, your current receiver works, at least for now. But it does not have sub out so we are in trouble before we even started. Temporary solution is to buy y-splitter adapter or cable amazon search

I'm using amazon just to show the products, it's not an endorsement. 5.1 at 300€ will be garbage, that is just about enough for just 2 new speakers to be honest. Things change in the used markets but the sad fact there too is that good speakers don't drop in prices that much. Those Andrew Jones speakers are VERY good for their price; they are designed to be top notch, expensive speakers, then they are carefully designed and sourced so that it will be cheap to make them. They are a benchmark for anyone on that price range.

Here's the speakers (found in google by using "andwer jones speakers", including the typo so dude, did you even try? :) )

the sub

u/DonnieDelaware · 1 pointr/hometheater

I would go for the X2200W because it features Denon's MultiEQ XT, while the S910W only has MultiEQ. The XT will drastically help when calibrating the speakers, especially since you want 7.1 and atmos. I would definitely go with the X200W if you can get it for only $100 more.

Do you know the Polk speakers you are thinking about? I have heard the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer speakers are good. Atmos is available for these as either an add-on or comes with certain bookshelf speakers. Amazon does not indicate if certain prices are for pairs. If the prices are, then you could get two towers, sub, two bookshelf speakers for rear, and two atmos add-ons for the tops of the towers for about $800. If the prices are not for pairs, then add about $300 more. Perhaps more people can chime in about other speakers with atmos that would fit your budget.

Here is the link to the amazon purchase: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

Denon's website shows the X2200W at $800. Adding the speakers, you would be around $1600 without tax, if applicable, or about $1900 depending on the statement above. I would also recommend a power conditioner instead of a surge protector at this level. Look around for a good one that is reasonably priced.

Good luck! My father was sitting in a room with atmos speakers and ducked when a helicopter flew overhead in the movie.

u/andleer · 1 pointr/sonos

I would give it a try, just make sure you have a reasonable return option if it fails. This issue plagued us around November of 2014. (Plus or minus a month.) I would hope Vizio got their stuff in order and this was clearly a Vizio issue, not Sonos.

I just Googled the issue and found numerous references to the issue.

Oh and now that I am racking my brain about it, it only occurred when the AV source was external to the TV (via HDMI and in our case an AppleTV or Roku). If you watch Netflix or Amazon Prime via the internal app, there wasn't an issue. This made the whole thing a bit more obscure.

The issue was horribly obvious and would have affected Vizio sounds bars and any other device that connected via optical so I am sure it eventually got some attention.

If your TV is still affected you don't have many options since it will affect any sound bar / system connected via optical. My fall back was to go with a Marantz surround sound system. We were looking at the Marantz because they offered shallow system and we were bookshelf constrained. There are certainly other options out there.

And all of these will sit ahead of your TV and do the HDMI switching eliminating the audio delay. You can use the TV's HDMI ARC to supply the surround sound tuner when using internal apps on the TV.

http://www.us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=AVReceivers&ProductId=NR1403

or

http://www.us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=AVReceivers&ProductId=NR1506

and some low-end but well reviewed Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers:
http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

I would have saved over the Sonos but we already had Sonos in the house and I didn't want to deal with running speaker wires to the rear surrounds.

I figured it would have cost about $1000 to go with this (or similar) non-Sonos solution and run cabling. In the end, we returned the Vizio for a full refund of about $900 and purchased a 1080 Sony for about twice the amount. Both 65" TVs. The Sony did not exhibit any audio delays out of the optical and had a superior image but nothing wrong with the Vizio and I would have never noticed the difference (and I realize returning the TV is not an option in your case).

And if by chance you do look at a different TV, be careful as many of them won't transcribe 5.1 surround from an external HDMI to the optical out. This is an entirely different issue. There is a 2014/15 CNET article on which TVs support transcribing in this case. I know Sony and Vizio are 2 of the 3 or 4 manufacturers that do. Samsung is the major exception and if you look at their sound bars and surround sound systems, none of them support 5.1 out of the optical because their TVs don't support it or at least didn't a year ago when we were looking.

Ultimately optical audio is really a dated technology and you will find lots of criticism of Sonos for going with this but I got it to work and will continue to buy Sonos equipment. What Sonos really needs is to either support ARC or a switching box that accepts HDMI sources and then feeds their various speakers, eliminating the optical and working more like other surround sound tuners. Guessing the ARC solution is ideal but ARC is relatively new and didn't see widespread implementation until around 2013 / 2014 (my guess). As more TVs support ARC, the need to support optical will decrease. And I would think your TV supports ARC. Mine did and they seem to be of similar vintage and specs.

Good luck. Let me know how it works out.

I'm not saying your Edifiers aren't fine, but that it's not what they were designed for so you'll need to be a bit unorthodox when adding a subwoofer. I'll give you 4 options:

  1. Keep the Edifiers and pick up a Pioneer SW-8MK2. This will cost the same as the Yamaha sub you were looking at. Connect your current RCA cable to a volume knob like this one. Split your signal coming out of there with RCA to Dual RCA cables and You're good to go.

  2. Spend your money on a great pair of speakers and forget a sub for now. This will offer the best sound by far and you can always add a sub down the line. Maybe you find a subwoofer for sale locally. A pair of JBL LSR305 speakers would fit the bill here. You can add a cheap mixer if you wanted more sources and convenient volume control.

  3. Purchase a pair of powered speakers with a sub output like the Kanto YU4. These are super convenient since you just connect a sub through an RCA cable and you're good to go. You can still fit in a cheap sub within your budget like the cheapo monoprice or the Acoustic Audio RWSUB-10. If you wanted to spend the extra bit for the pioneer subwoofer, that's great too.

  4. Purchase a passive system with a separate amplifier. Assuming you don't have infinite space on a desk or something then pick up an SMSL Q5. Pick up passive speakers like the Pioneer BS22 or Micca MB42X. Choose any of the aforementioned subs that fit in your budget. Pick up cheap speaker wire to connect your speakers to your amp, and use an RCA cable to have your amp send signal to your sub.

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR for $129 for the pair, and Pioneer SP-C22 center for $99

u/bookfancier69 · 1 pointr/vinyl

Think of a turntable as a lens on a camera. A good lens on a crappy body will help a lot but there is no benefit at all with a cheap lens on a good body. The turntable is the first thing in the signal chain, you are going to be limited with the LP60X so I would go with the following and save the rest of the money for a better turntable down the road as nothing is really going to make much of a difference until then.

These bookshelf speakers are great value. Not the nicest looking ones but do some research as they have great reviews. Best $100 speakers out there IMO.

I would look into getting a used vintage receiver with a phono stage on craigslist, should be able to find a very nice one for around $100-150 and combined with the speakers above I think you will be very pleased.

Start to build a system not limited to one format as that way your money will go a lot further as everything will be able to work together.

Or you could look for vintage, but bookshelf speakers tended to either be gigantic and heavy (like my Bozak B-201 or B-402, which are bookshelf speakers in name only) or sound weak.

Amazon has the Pioneer SP-FS52 tower for $90 each and SP-BS22-LR bookshelf for $90 for the pair, Monday only.

I just upgraded to monitor audio bronze bx2, normally $500, on sale at audio advisor (non affiliated) for $359. They're fantastic. If you're not looking to spend that much, grab these, they're pretty universally lauded as great for the price:

There's a lot of things going on here but most of it is probably over your $200 budget. Even most entry level receivers are just starting at that price point but you could save money but getting one refurbished. I'm also unclear about how you hooked up a subwoofer (which subwoofer?) to that receiver as it has no pre-outs. Did you use the line in on the back of the sub in parallel with your main speakers? I have done this with my desktop setup and there's no way I wouldn't notice the difference from adding a sub, even a cheap 8" sony or polk.

To answer your question though, a speaker upgrade would probably be your best bet with favorites like the Miccas or Pioneers immediately coming to mind. The great thing about both is that they have matching center channels to upgrade to in the future.

u/HaNs_SuPeR · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

maybe Pioneer BS22 $130. I have a pair. They live up to the reviews. Not much low bass so that sub might go well with them. https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

u/Brakkio · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hey, been having trouble deciding between similarly priced bookshelves in the $90-$130 range. Here are the speakers I'm looking at. I'll be using these for my 12' x 12' bedroom to listen to music.

Klipsch KB-15 - $130

BIC America DV62si - $105

Fluance SX6 - $130

Pioneer BS22 - $97(Probably the safest option , lots of nice reviews)

Polk Audio TSi100 - $130

Polk Audio T15 - $109

Honestly I could go on and on, there are a lot of speakers in that price range with good reviews on amazon.

u/totallywontstabyou · 1 pointr/audiophile

Okay, it can be difficult to get anything good (by audiophile standards) for that price without building it yourself or buying used. You could get a bangin' two channel setup, but 5.1 setups cost a ton more than a 2 channel setup (because tons of speakers).

However, it may be worth looking into the Pioneer BS22 series, they're cheap, well regarded (the older BS21's impressed me a lot, and the 22's are supposed to be even better), and were designed by Andrew Jones, who normally designs speakers well into the multi tens of thousands of dollars range (per speaker). Check out the TAD Reference One to see one of his more recent speakers.

Here's a link to the series, they have floorstanders, bookshelves, a center, and a sub, though it may be worth looking into the BIC F12 instead of the sub in this series. After getting all of that, you should have enough for an entry level receiver. I'm not sure if Best Buy sells this series, but it's still cheap enough on Amazon to fit your budget.

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

One quick note, never mix speakers with different tweeters (meaning, never mix speakers from different brands/series).

Have you made that /r/hometheater thread? Link me to it when you do.

u/raeanin · 1 pointr/hometheater

I've never seen a receiver anywhere near this price range that is 4 ohm stable. Even most $500+ receivers aren't 4 ohm stable. 4 ohm stability isn't that popular in the HT world for some reason. It's safe to say, if it's not advertised with 4 ohm specs, it won't work well with 4 ohm speakers.

I would highly suggest getting the Pioneer bs22's instead of the Miccas. They test objectively better and having heard both, the Pioneers definitely sound better to me. Also, they are on sale now for even less than the Miccas.

u/Better_Nature · 1 pointr/vinyl

Noob question incoming: Could I connect the Pioneer SP-BS22-LRs to a receiver using speaker wire? Reviews says it uses banana plugs but I have a vintage receiver, and I'm 95% sure it doesn't have attachments for the plugs.

u/benest · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Looks like you have both. That's pretty standard and gives you good options.
The simplest may be to add a simple SMSL amp (SMSL SA-50
for $66.99 would do the trick) with whatever passive bookshelf speakers you can afford with the rest.

The Micca MB42 are only $60, while Micca MB42X are $90.
You might be able to find the Pioneer BS22 on sale from Amazon or Fry's for under $90

You'll hook up speaker wires from the amp to your sub (Input 1) and another set of speaker wires from your sub (Output) to your speakers. Then make sure to select High on your High cut toggle.

u/Skinny_Santa · 1 pointr/audiophile

Is this worth buying? I've been casually browsing amps for awhile now to go with some bookshelf speakers I inherited. Main question is, would this work if I ever upgraded to a bigger system? Would this run a turntable? Is Best Buy over charging for the features it has?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-200w-2-0-ch-stereo-receiver-black/4550834.p?skuId=4550834

  1. What is your budget? $100-200
  2. What are you looking for? An Amplifier that I could run wired and wireless music through. Willing to buy a separate adapter if it means the amp is better overall.
  3. How will you typically be using the gear? Room sound for a decent sized but not massive living room. Also would be good if I could hear it in the kitchen which is around the corner.
  4. What gear do you own? Pioneer SP-BS22 bookshelf speakers https://smile.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499125389&sr=8-1&keywords=pioneer+jones+speakers
  5. What do you intend on using for a source? Wireless receiver of some type, also a record player possibly.
  6. What material will you be using your gear for? Music only
  7. Are you willing to buy used? Yes

    Thanks for any help.

Dayton Audio B652-AIR vs Monoprice 6.5in and Ribbon Tweeter

I'm looking for the same, however I can give my impressions of the speakers I already own

JBL Arenas... I love them, great flat responce. I have not tried the wall mount verison. Because I want another pair of my absolute favorite...

Sony SSCS5 3-Way don't over pay however they go on sale for $75 from time to time.

Of course the Bose 301... but also the old cheap Bose 201... They sound great and are very cheap.

The ABSOLUT MOST HORRIBLE are

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR and the

Polk Audio T15 100 The most horrible Mid Range Freqs are dominent in these spkrs.

2 weeks ago I asked for recommendations for a passive 2.1 setup for my PC for under $300.

I would like a recommendation for a swap on the sub for something that's Amazon prime-able rather than purchased through a 3rd party website for shipping reasons, and would also like a second opinion on the speaker setup if you think there are better speakers for the same budget and available through Amazon prime

I was recommended

[Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf Loudspeakers] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PxrzCbRECT5Q2)

Dayton Audio Sub 1000 10" powered sub

(That sub is what I want replaced)

SMSL SA-36A Pro 20WPC TPA3118D2 Digital Amplifier AMP 12V Power Supply

(for that AMP, it doesn't allow headphones to pass through it. I wanted to ask if I needed a seperate DAC amp thing the /r/headphones guys are always talking about or if I could just use an AMP for my speakers that allows the headphones to be plugged in

u/TheOtherDwightSchrut · 1 pointr/buildapc

I'm in love with my Pioneer BS22. They are kind of bulky for using 4 inch drivers but sound great. Even Stereophile magazine is in love with them. They gave these speakers runner up for speaker of the year in 2013 and that is going up against speakers that cost thousands of dollars.

u/tom_snout · 1 pointr/vinyl

And speakers: my friend has a pair of these Pioneers and they sound great. $127 on Amazon. These Daytons, at $60 per pair are getting nice press, and the price (!) is hard to beat.

u/cerialphreak · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

You mentioned in other comments that you're primarily playing from your PC and maybe from your phone. In that case I would suggest the SMSL AD18 which has optical (check your motherboard), usb, and bluetooth inputs and you can just hook up your TV/ monitor and change your audio device to the amp. It also has a headphone amp as well which is what sold me on it. That cuts your budget down to $100ish unfortunately which doesn't leave much room for speakers let alone speakers + sub. For speakers the Micca MB42x are solid and can definitely fill a room. You will probably want to eq up the bass a bit. There's also the Andrew Jones Pioneer BS22's (mentioned in another comment) which might be better for home theater use but would put you over budget (maybe wait for a sale if you don't have any leeway in your budget).

If it were my money, I'd go with the Miccas now with the intention of upgrading the speakers or buying a sub later down the road.

u/0Cyphr · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

You can get the BS22s for $98 on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

They frequently drop to $85 (pair), at which price they're a bargain.

But I agree, the Fluance SX6 are a good choice too under 200. :)

u/jeff000000 · 1 pointr/audiophile

Are these the ones you're talking about? https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1541179307&sr=8-3&keywords=pioneer+bs22&dpID=31iDtHu2uBL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

... and for the amp, do I just need to match the impedance, or is there anything else I need to look at?

Too bad it looks like I only have a 10.5" clearance between the top of my desk and my wall-mounted triple monitors. The speakers are 13" tall. I guess I could put the speakers behind the monitors, but it could change the sound. Maybe try and wall-mount the speakers above the monitors and aim it down towards my head?

u/randychardonnay · 1 pointr/vinyl

25 is ok, but it's like right at the edge of not really being enough. There's no magic number, because your amp needs are based on your speaker's needs, but more like 35-40 and you've got more flexibility.

They're not as nice looking but I think highly of these cheap bookshelf speakers by Pioneer.

I also like Paradigm and Wharfedale for a bit more.

But, there's no ceiling, is the thing. You can always do a bit better for another couple hundred bucks, or five hundred, or a thousand. That said, a hundred for speakers and a hundred for an amp is kinda the very minimum threshold, if you're buying new.

u/TouchofRed · 1 pointr/hometheater

It depends on your seating. If it's you alone in the sweet spot 2.0 will work just fine. If you or someone else is sitting off angle a center would be the way to go.

I would look at Pioneer BS22 for $99/pair
https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-BS22-LR-Designed-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B008NCD2LG

The Pioneers would give you a little more low end than the Miccas and to me they sound better. Especially if you go initially without a sub the extra low end will be nice. However, the center (The C22) some say is lacking but it sounds fine in my setup. I haven't listened to the Micca center.

u/roboctopus · 1 pointr/citypop

I use an Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable, which is a decent entry-level turntable. I'm planning on upgrading eventually, but it's good for the price.

My receiver/amplifier is an old 90s Technics model I got on Craigslist for $50. Works fine.

My speakers are just some Sony bookshelf speakers I got years ago. Don't remember the model number. They sound okay to me, but lack bass. I've heard good things about these Pioneer speakers though. Good reviews.

u/WellTimedPoop · 1 pointr/perktv

I bought this 4K A/V Receiver (was $250) and these speakers (were $90). Right now I'm perking for christmas presents, but after the first of the year, I'm gonna try to get at least the subwoofer and center channel, and then I'll be saving for a new computer.

u/Supersoakthatho · 1 pointr/hometheater

Around $350 is a little tough

Bookshelf Speakers:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008NCD2LG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_CFlNyb8P3C5F6

Receiver:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YAO43YG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3GlNybRV0SRV1

Not a huge system, but still good. That receiver will get you 4k passthrough and those bookshelves are killer for the price.

u/tonyviv · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Yeah on top of that cabinet is way too high. In general the tweeters should be located at ear height in the main listening position. I'm guessing there is no "main listening position" in this application. Your idea to mount them in the top corners should be fine but might be difficult. They'll need to be 45 degrees AND angled down to the center of the room. I never asked if you will primarily be using this for music or TV watching. If TV primarily you might want a center channel speaker mounted directly below it. Of course this would mean buying an AVR instead of a stereo receiver. However you can find older used AVR's really cheap on CL in most areas. Just food for thought. If space permits you also might consider using tower speakers instead like these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008NCD2LG/ which are very good.
