This book is AMAZING! I read it before I bought anything and man alive did it help. It was my torch in the now dark world of film photography. It also gave me a ton of helpful info on moding cameras.
Was it this book?
There's that lo-fi style in selfie-land. Great when you want to hide wrinkles or flaws; how can it not become cool?
Not to mention toy cameras where you embrace the bad tech and make it work for you. I've seen this done well, like in Michelle Bates' work. There are people who like that stuff a lot, actual artists. These are people making good pictures with fuzzy elements, but being very sharp in manipulating composition and taking advantage of poor-quality lens aberrations, etc.
And then there are people getting famous for fuzzy, shitty compositions and only that, just because they may be using medium format film while talking up their own authenticity. God help us.
