You could look at the GPD line of handhelds -- these are modern x86 boxes in a handheld form factor, so they'll be expensive, too, but can also be used in place of a modern laptop. They've also got less expensive models targeting industrial applications, which should still be good for DOSBox, and the original version of the GPD Win is also a bit less expensive than the current version.

On the cheaper side, there's the PocketCHIP, which is an ARM SBC bundled with a handheld enclosure, which should be able to run DOSBox under Linux decently enough. The manufacturer shut down, however, so these aren't likely to be available new for too much longer.
