Well first what do you know about maya, i haven't used AutoCAD since high school so I don't remember how much transfers between the two. The IK skeleton you said you generated, unless you already have the model finished don't touch any of that, that's for rigging. What do you have made?
Also, I would suggest getting a copy of Polygonal Modeling its a really good reference guide for modeling in Maya.
