Great suggestion. I Don't know near as much as I should about the Olmec, and I see that as a weak point in my knowledge of Mesoamerica. I like the Coe and Koontz book precisely because it takes a holistic approach to ancient Mesoamerica.

Add in a third book: "Mesoamerican Archaeology" By Hendon and Joyce if you are interested in an edited volume of a VERY academic nature. Its important in understanding those two civilizations, to also understand some of the less well known groups in Mesoamerica. Koontz's book and the Hendon and Joyce volume will do really well at filling in the gaps between Coe's "The Maya" and Diehl's "The Olmec" (which I had on my list for a while but have just ordered, since you reminded me of it)

Oh! And pick up a copy of the Popol Vuh While you are at it.
