If you want to blend markers smoothly, you need a colorless blender. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube with tips on how to use them, but the big one is, clean it by scrubbing it on a clean piece of paper or board every time you use it. That doesn't mean use it for a couple of hours and then clean it. It means after each and every use, just as if it were a brush you were using to paint with. As long as you're blending, say, a particular red, you can keep using it. But if you want to switch to blue, you have to clean it or you'll end up getting a bunch of red mixed into the blue.
it's such a pain to get that saturation with colored pencils. there is a prismacolor blending marker, although i've never used it. i'd imagine it helps with blending similar shades together but not making a gradient with one color.
Everyone says "better markers" but they don't really help. You can get great markers and still do that. Try a blender marker!
