I like to keep my pattern tracings, drafts, etc in large white envelopes. Pattern notes go right on the pattern pieces. The envelope is labeled with the pattern information, sizes, and variations that I've made, like different sleeves for the same t-shirt body. Some people put a photo or line drawing on the outside, too. They fit perfectly in an IKEA box if I put them sideways, then I can flip through and find what I need.
I've tried ziplock bags, I've tried hanging file folders, I've tried binders. My current system fits the most patterns in the smallest space and eliminates all the sliding plastic.
