$500 per person or total?

Most ultralighters spend closer to $500-$700 per person.

Rough idea for both of you:

  • Tent: Tarptent Motrail (2p) - $260 / 36oz
  • Quilts: Bandit 20F quilts - $180-$200ish each /20- 22oz each depending on length/width
  • Airpads: Klymit V insulated lite - $55 each on sale right now at theclymb - 19oz each.
  • Backpacks: Very personal. ULA CDT are $150ish each. - around 24oz each, can be trimmed down a bit

Assuming the 2p tent cost is split between both of you and carried by both of you you'll be at $535 per person and about 5.1 lbs each.

    Cost saving options:

  • Lunar Duo "outfitter" tent ($160) to save $100, but it adds 20oz, over a pound.
  • Budget frameless backpack like this guy for $40. If you only need 1-2 nights then 40L should be sufficient.
  • Quilts: you could go with 30F/cheaper/slightly heavier quilts like the ones from wilderness logics for $140-$150ish each.
