Sound is a big deal with Alien Isolation, both in terms of strategy and with immersion. Have you ever check out Razer's Kraken line of over-the-ear earphones? I find they're impressively loud, and I don't have the finest hearing. My roommate actually doesn't wear his on his head and uses them as a set of speakers, usually in his lap. They're also not very 'leaky'... he sits about 4 feet away from me, and if he wears them, I can't really hear the sound coming through.

I have no way of knowing what degree of hearing you have, but even if you can get a bit of the sound with a good set of earphones, it would give you an advantage.

I found the sound design in Isolation to be easy to work with. I found it's really layered, if that makes sense... You don't need to try very hard to hear the alien clomping around; it really stands out and is kinda "on top" of all the other sound. It's also a very pleasant sound environment. There seem to be a lot of lower-frequency sound (like the alien's footsteps are more of a thump), and when he's crawling around somewhere, it's not all that sharp sounding.

I did a bit of research, and apparently for hard-of-hearing gamers, filtering your computer's sound settings to amplify bass can help some hard-of-hearing gamers. I read in this thread:

>Depending on what sort [of hearing loss] [your father] has, he may want to adjust the sound settings on his devices so he gets more gain from bass sounds. The vibration makes bass seem louder, and lower frequencies are far easier to amplify than higher frequencies.

>Maybe change it to monostereo if he's relying on one ear. Some applications offer visual prompts to go with sound notifications, so it makes it easier to figure out what sound means what.

>(me: profoundly deaf, sensorineural hearing loss on both sides, using a cochlear implant

So you may want to try to adjust the low-/high-pass settings on your sound card to soften the higher-frequency sounds and amplify the higher-frequency sounds. Though, once again, I am not sure what your hearing register is like and what frequencies you hear/don't hear. If you adjusted the frequencies that you let through, you'd stand to benefit by hearing the Alien's activity, but would trade off the sound effects that save points, equipment, and alarms make.

Like I said, check out the Razer Kraken headsets to see if they may help you.

I really wish the game industry would do more in the way of assistive technology so that all gamers can get a full experience. They're beginning to do things to help the visually impaired and those with colour blindness.. But it would be nice if they would add settings into game that offer an audio environment that suits those with hearing loss.

I hope I could help you out a bit here, and I apologise if any of my comments reflect any ignorance of the issue. I don't know what hearing loss is like, but I do enjoy researching things to try to help.

As far as speakers go it really depends. If you dint care about bass or stereo just buy a cheap pair from WalMart. But if you want better audio you can usually find a good stereo 5.1 on amazon or newegg for around $50. But in my opinion? Buy a headset. Corded over wireless for not having to deal with them dieing, and make sure to buy nice. If not, you'll buy twice. A good one that I recently bought that isn't too expensive and has good build quality is the Razer krakens. It's really good for games in which directional awareness is a thing and has 7.1 stereo.

This is a really good headset which I’ve used. Has surround sound which is really good for call of duty and Fortnite however some Fortnite footstep sounds can be buggy sometimes. They haven’t really worked spatial audio out at the moment.

Hope this link helps. It’s also relatively affordable and durable. Had my headset for 2 almost 3 years and the leather ear pads are only beginning to fray now. So they will last long. And it’s usb powered compatible with the PS4 and PC. The PC has an app which allows you to calibrate the headset.

Overall a quality product from Razer.

This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LN0O0VG/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Great quality and a decent price. I didn't even need to adjust any settings out of the box. I've even had a few of my stream regulars ask which I use because they like the audio quality

i use a Razer Kraken headset. Link : https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Kraken-USB-Compatible-Playstation/dp/B00LN0O0VG . They're very comfy and the sound is good. The only gripe I have with it is that it doesn't have a way to mute it on the cord (so you have to use the mute on party, or if in game chat can't mute yourself).

I'm interested in buying audio technica headphones and an attachable mic for gaming. I live in the USA and my price range is $80 USD max for the headphones (not including microphone attachment price). Is there any big difference between the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x, M30x, and M40x? Which one do you recommend for me, I will be using it for PC gaming to listen to footsteps in games like rainbow 6 siege so the better I can hear them and distinguish which direction they are coming from the better. Also I want to attach a mic to it, is this possible and if so which one should I get (please note I have a mechanical keyboard so hopefully the mic doesn't pick up much of that sound)?

I currently have this one and it's decent but I want something a little better. Would the audio technica headphones listed above be an improvement over this?
