Well, I (personally) tend to favor 6x8 journals, as I'm left-handed and find this particular size to be not too big and yet not too small for me. I'm more of a writer than a painter, so I like lined pages. I hate spiral bound journals. Like I said before, being left-handed causes the spirals to dig into my hand, and they tend to make the pages easier to become loose and fall out.

I have bought real leather journals in the past and have enjoyed them, but they're not a necessity for me.The page amount of my journals generally run in the 120-300 range, but the length isn't much of a priority to me so long as the pages themselves aren't tissue paper-thin and the journal/-binding itself is durable (I, too, am a college student, so the ability to stuff my journal in my bag without worrying the cover will shred off or the pages to just fall out is a big deal for me). I equally like soft and hard-cover journals.

I know some people like acid-free pages for archival purposes, but it's not a deal-breaker for me if a journal doesn't have it.

I don't like/care for pen/pencil holders because they rarely (if ever) fit the particular pens I use, making the holder worthless. Perhaps a durable, elastic holder would work, but then you'd risk the chance of the elastic wearing out, so... no holders.

Absolutely no locks/clasps/wraps. Not only are they extremely easy to break into/tear off, but if you're into collaging/scrapbooking, the bits and pieces you place in your journal may cause the clasps to no longer be able to fit together. Also, I personally don't like them as I find them annoying to bother with; when I journal, I want to sit and write, not fiddle with locks or clasps. With that being said, the only sort of journal "clasp" I like are simple elastic bands that hold the journal closed, like this one.

I like nonrefillable journals. I don't hate refillables, I just don't care for them. If you were to tell me to pick one over the other, I'd always choose a nonrefillable journal.

As for the color of the journal, I personally enjoy dark/earth tone colors, like black (my favorite and #1 journal color choice), maroon, caramel/dark honey/dark chocolate, etc... . No pink. I despise pink.

As for journal "ribbons"/page markers, I don't mind them, but, again, they're not a necessity to me.

As for personalization, I'm sure the option to have a favorite picture/quotation embossed somewhere on the journal covers would be a nice feature for some people, though I'm not sure about the legal (copyright) ramifications you may have to deal with when people try to use, say, Google Images for their pictures. If you choose to have this sort of feature, you may have to limit the amount of images/quotations, as well as only allowing public domain images, too (again, I have no idea).

I, personally, don't mind personalized journals, just as long as their tasteful and not gaudy/featuring any pop culture/modern celebrity references.
