Ohh, another one! The absolute classic of Soviet sci-fi. The Asimov of USSR. They were brothers Strugatskys.

Their most famous work is of course "Roadside Picnic". (I think the PC game "Stalker" was made by that novel). Also the foreword by Ursula Le Guin did quite a justice to this book.

Bare in mind that the Strugatskys were never "Soviet writers", rather the intellectuals of the era - the anti-soviet. At least as much as possible, to be able to get published.

Their stronger works that were more critical to the politics and society are not translated - simply because the meaning was written between the lines and a reader who does not know the background of everyday life in USSR does not see it.

wow , thank you - I’m always a little worried as I never know what’s going to come out of my mouth until it’s too late, lol. (book embargo?)

(and omg - a wall-climbing, web-spinning toaster - no thank you 😳)

Sadly, I have not seen any of the John Wick movies. I’m afraid my experience is limited to a crossover John Wick / Wicked script someone posted once 😁 but I will bear that in mind when I get there.

And I’m always up for recommendations - I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface on the Slavic folk tales, so I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

I do love the classics! I think HG Wells is probably my favorite but I did love me some Bradbury as well. And I can’t think of any sci-fi translations; to be honest (in a terribly sweeping generalization) I have always been somewhat intimidated by Russian literature. But again, always up for more recommendations; one can only be a chickenshit for so long 😉

Roadside Picnic?
