Try Russia - Once and Future Empire by Philip Longworth. It's not bad. Massie's biographies of the tsars are alright,
so are Beevor's war-related booksscratch that. I've hear good things about China Mieville's October.Robert Conquest, Richard Pipes and Ann Applebaum are generally considered slanderous russophobes in Russia, whether that makes you want to avoid them or not is up to you, I suppose. I wouldn't read anything that has 'Putin' on the cover.
