This. Sure the whole "macs are twice as expensive than windows PC" argument might've worked back then, but the prices are very similar now.
Samsung Ativ book 9
ASUS UX301
Macbook Retina 13
Can you find a counterpart with similar specs? Sure, but that's just one factor that contributes to being a quality laptop.
Er, there are computers that fit that category as windows, and I was assuming you were already a Mac user. For college I'd always recommend Windows just because most applications you might have to run will often be Windows-only. My sister got a Macbook through her school, and they actually made them to dual-boot Windows since many professors required the use of applications that weren't available on Mac.
I'd personally recommend a Dell XPS 15, it's basically the Windows analogue to the Macbook when it comes to form factor, power, and and battery life, but go to /r/suggestalaptop if you need help deciding which one.
You can always get a small 13" Windows machine and subsequent desktop as well, such as this one. As a bonus you get a touchscreen, which I've come to love on laptops.
The relatively mediocre display on the Air is perhaps the reason for its incredible battery life. While other Ultrabooks trend toward FHD, WQHD, QHD, IPS, and touchscreens, Apple keeps the same relatively low-resolution TN panel. This likely helps with battery life a lot.
The battery life is also lowered when Windows is installed. Therefore the OS has something to do with the top-tier autonomy.
I have not seen another Ultrabook even get reasonably close to the Air's endurance. However I have seen cool features like QHD IPS touchscreens, 2-in-1 designs, and while these things sabotage the battery life, I really like them. Pretty far back some have speculated that Apple will release an Air with a better display. I won't go into that further except to say that everyone agrees it would lower the battery life. Is that a tradeoff Apple's consumers want?
As far as I'm currently aware, the Acer Aspire S7 is the thinnest around at 0.51" thick.
The Samsung ATIV Book 9 is the same as well. I don't know of any that actually get thinner than that.
As for laptops to come, the ASUS Zenbook UX305 will be the absolute thinnest on the market, but it's not been released yet, and I don't know exactly when it will be. It's only 0.03" thinner anyways.
Bear with me as I'm not great with computers. This is the one that I own: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-NP940X3G-K06US-13-3-Inch-Laptop-Mineral/dp/B00HB1GLJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421726616&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+notebook+series+9&pebp=1421726632017&peasin=B00HB1GLJU
