I picked up a Samsung Chromebook 3 on sale for $130 a few months ago and I find it perfect for my college needs. It has great battery life and if I need to use any Windows apps Teamviewer and VMWare are great options

Well you could get the direct successor, the Chromebook 3 (currently $189) https://smile.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/dp/B01N5P6TJW/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

Get a 200 dollar cheap chromebook for class/ notes. It's enough for google docs, or microsoft word and basic web browsing.

Build a 600-800 dollar PC for gaming/ anything else in your dorm/ apartment.

heres a link to a chromebook: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/dp/B01N5P6TJW/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_bs_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4R3H9RA2WV1GM5ZS1TBC

PC part picker link w/ parts for a good PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nXNs3F This PC is easily upgradable if you ever want to swap for a higher end processor (even though the one in it is pretty good.) You might and probs will need to get a better graphics card, but for now the prices are a little messed up cause of cripto-currency mining.

If you were willing to look into a chromebook, there are several cheap options on sale at amazon including the Samsung Chromebook 3 for $170, and the Acer Chromebook 14 for $260.

As far as Windows laptops go, again there are a few options on amazon. The Acer E 15 is a great option for $350 with its i3 processor, 4gb of ram, 1TB HDD, and HD 620 graphics.
Another good option for about $100 less is the HP 15 for $260 with an AMD A6-7310 processor, 4gb of ram, 500GB HDD and AMD R4 graphics.

Rather than me list every option, I suggest taking a look at my Laptop Suggestion Guide. Best of luck!

Hopes this posts!! All these are grabbed from the Red Flag Deals site and Flipp app set to downtown Vancouver postal code

Depending how close to the border you are ordering in America, crossing the border and picking up in store could be cheaper but be aware of import laws.

If you aware aware this may break in two years a cheap ass Chromebook is probably a good investment while you get settled, 300$ is 25$ over 12 months so if the immediate budget can handle it might be good. Otherwise, Kijiji?

I've also seen DIY writer laptops of like raspberry pi micro computer + e ink screen but that's far more effort then the 145$ after tax first Chromebook.

How about this Samsung Chromebook 3?

u/pietvanzoen · 1 pointr/chromeos

I’ve been using my Chromebook 3 (XE500C13-K04US) as a personal laptop and doing some coding on it via Termux. So far I’ve been really impressed.

I picked it up new (not refurbished) on amazon for $169. I used camelcamelcamel to get an alert for when the price dropped: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/product/B01N5P6TJW?active=summary

My work laptop is a MacBook Pro retina, so clearly it’s not going to compare to anything like that. But for the price I’ve been quite impressed. Screen is ok, viewing angle isn’t great. No complaints about the keyboard. Supposedly the keyboard is water resistant (but I haven’t tested that 😛). The trackpad click is on the clunky side. None of that is a distraction for day-to-day use though.

What’s your use case? I bet there are tons of chromebooks that are better, not many that are useable and cheaper I guess.

An ASUS (a brand known for REALLY good build quality), $193: https://www.amazon.com/Chromebook-C202SA-YS02-Ruggedized-Resistant-Celeron/dp/B01DBGVB7K/

A Samsung, $189: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebook-11-6-16GB-XE500C13-K04US/dp/B01N5P6TJW

Another ASUS, $194: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VUV0MG0/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B01N5P6TJW

Only the last one can run android apps, as that's still not very common in chromebooks.

u/Orangematz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

It should be able to do that. Though as mentioned, the 2GB of RAM may be a little limiting (if that is what it has).

How about this?

> Chromebooks are frequently 2gb.

Only if you make a very bad decision.

For example:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5P6TJW

This is the chromebook I'm currently using. It's $190, and comes with 4 gigs of ram. The 2gb version is only $16 cheaper.. which would be a very stupid choice.
