How much was your insurance? I'm going to assume $10/mo. That's $240 in insurance plus $99, so $340 to get a replacement unit.

Looks like you can get a "renewed" S8 on Amazon for $260 right now, two day Prime shipping. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Unlocked-Smartphone-Carriers/dp/B0786PRKBP/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_107_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=C2T9X2E767BP1ZDC47QW or $377 new https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y14T5YW/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_nw_mr This is a little over two years since the phone was new, just like your example.

Then you could have sold your broken one for at least a little on eBay or wherever. Pretend that's at least $37. I would guess more but just for the sake of it.

You would have come out ahead if you didn't have insurance, even if you got a new one as a replacement instead of a refurb.

And if you hadn't dropped and broken the phone at all, you would have come out way more ahead. GF and I have only had one phone actually drop and break in our many years of heavy smartphone use, and that was a Moto X with no case back in 2014. With quality cases, phones don't break from dropping unless you do something insane or have really really bad luck.

So, the only time you'd come out behind, hand-waving some numbers, would probably be if you didn't use a case and broke it due to negligence (ie not something covered under warranty) within the first year or so while replacement value was still high.

You might get random calls or texts from people you don’t know from the previous owner of the number.

Have you decided which sub $200 phone you are going to go with? You might want to look at a used or new Essential Ph-1 Used (Amazon)|Renewed by Amazon. After software updates it’s a pretty good phone from what I hear. Other than that, you may want to look at either new Motorola’s (Amazon) or a used LG G6/G7/V20/V30 or even a used Samsung Galaxy S7 or S8 Used S8(Amazon)|Renewed S8(Amazon).

> I just asked if you were saying that apple products don't lose value at all over years

Why would I say that? I didn't say that nor did I imply it. I was talking about androids only cuz op is selling an android.

An otterbox doesn't cost that much. Like 30 bucks new. Imagine 2 years old one. That whole package cost him like CA$680. And no way I'm paying for that anymore than 340.

Also I know what I'm talking about here. The phone is out of warranty period. It would likely get only one OS update. There's probably better deals out there in android market for $400 rn.

HERE YOU GO - Pretty much same phone with better display, arguably better camera, 3month warranty, probably wasn't used for 2 years, free delivery. You can buy a new otterbox and still save 20 bucks.

So yeah I would still stand by what I said, I would not pay anything more than 340 for this phone. 400 is bit high.

Edit-if you don't know any phone's age, just google. But try not to confidently say whatever you believe with full authority without actually knowing about it.
