Same here. The SSD helped immensely.

Shaders preview immediately.

Load times drastically reduced. There are times when I've loaded into the tower, emptied my post master, and collected my loot -- all before my clan mates even load in.

Very few if any loads between areas (blind well / dreaming city) -- same deal, I'll be sparrowing along with some buds, we pass through a loading zone and suddenly I'm alone because they're all stuck in mid air loading the zone.

Well worth the ~$80 USD for the SSD.

EDIT: Since a lot of folks are asking -- I bought a Samsung EVO 860 250GB, which is currently for sale on Amazon for $58 (nearly $20 less than I paid), and paired it with a $10 Amazon Basics Hard Drive Enclosure.

I'm using an OG XB1 FWIW.

Any brand will do in PS4 because PS4 OS is not optimized for SSD. (xbox is different, I think you will get better speeds from better drives) However, one of the best ones is on sale for only $57 today: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-250GB-Internal-MZ-76E250B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1537193972&sr=1-3&keywords=250gb+ssd

That's actually an internal drive, so you'd still need to buy an external enclosure to put it in, this is the one I bought (it comes with a USB cable so no need to buy that separately):

https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-External-Enclosure-Adapter-Housing/dp/B06XWRRMYX/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1537194248&sr=1-4&keywords=external+enclosure+2.5

The installation is easy. If you've ever put a Nintendo cartridge into a Nintendo then you have the skills necessary to install the drive into the enclosure. After that, plug in the cable, and google where in the ps4 menu to format the drive as external storage (I forget off the top of my head). Then, highlight Destiny 2 on ps4, press "Options", then select move to external storage. It took about 15 mintues for me. Then it was all ready!

Amazon has a wonderful case-thing with cables, and Samsung sells a nice compact 2.5" SSD that can go as low as 250GB, and as high as 4TB. I bought the 250GB one with the case-thing and only paid about $72 total. Both can be bought through Amazon, and are both under Prime shipping if you have it, so your SSD will be here and ready in no time at all. I highly recommend it if you are a heavy Destiny player.

You can get a generic 120GB SSD for $21. That's objectively cheap. It's not big or fast as SSDs go, but it's a hell of a lot better as a boot drive than any rusty platter.

And you can step up to a legitimately-good name brand for not much more. Samsung sells their previous-gen evos for peanuts. $56 for a 250GB drive that is actually decent might not be impulse-purchase territory for everybody, but it's cheaper than a single AAA game.

u/JagSKX · 7 pointsr/laptops

Samsung 860 EVO SSDs are basically rated the best in terms of performance and the best SSD brand with only a minor price premium. The 500GB version is $80 while the 250GB is $58.

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1542399154&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=samsung%2BEVO%2B860%2B500GB&th=1

They are $5 more compared to the Crucial MX500 models for the same capacities. Samsung has their own migration software (works only with Samsung) that you can download from their site if you want to clone your current hard drive. However, most people are unlikely to notice the performance difference

Don't know much about the Crucial BX500 or WD Green series SSDs. But even slow SSDs are much faster than than the fastest hard drive.

I got the exact same thing as from this post, since the OP had indicated success:

Whatever other parts you end up going with, I definitely think it's worth grabbing a cheap ($35-$55) SSD for the boot drive. It's the single component that gives the greatest day-to-day performance increase.

This is a great value

Or something a bit smaller and slower, but even cheaper

Oh ya? Show us. I don't see $60 CAD on CamelCamelCamel or Keepa price history for 860 Evo 500GB

The lowest I've seen it sold on been sold on Amazon I see has been for $89.99. Lowest Lightning Deal was $94.99, 2 months ago.

You're thinking of the 860 Evo 250GB that went for $59.99 from August 30th for 2 weeks.

u/sudosudash · 3 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

I got this Samsung @ 250 GB https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oa7PBbWWDCJTB. And the difference has been unreal. Sad that we have to buy additional hardware to improve load times but I would imagine even with a patch load times will be better from an SSD than the internal HD

u/Vartemis · 3 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

I have done the same. For anybody trying to do so, just buy these 2 items off of amazon:

Samsung 860 EVO 250GB 2.5 Inch SATA... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

ORICO USB3.0 to SATA III 2.5"... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M08LCXW?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

Those links contain everything you need. Once you have them, connect it to your xbox and transfer destiny to the ssd from the internal storage and you're done.

u/-Badger2- · 3 pointsr/Dell

If you don't want to open up your laptop, you could buy a 2.5 Inch ssd and an enclosure

Which model G3 15 do you have? You probably have a slot for an m.2 SSD, so you wouldn't have to replace your hard drive.

u/brianwski · 3 pointsr/backblaze

Disclaimer: I work at Backblaze.

> set the temporary folder

If you open the Backblaze Control panel and find the “Settings...” button, on the first tab is “Temporary Scratch Drive” or something like that. You can set that to an external or internal drive other than “C:\” there. Hit “Pause” on the backup (if it is running). Make sure this folder is empty (while paused):

C:\ProgramData\Backblaze\bzdata\bzbackup\bzdatacenter\bzcurrentlargefile\

Then hit “Backup Now” or wait to let the backup resume.

Now, that will change where Backblaze makes a copy of large files it is about to backup, which is “temporary data”. However, there is some data which is not temporary (should only be 2-3 GBytes) where Backblaze remembers what has been backed up or not backed up. That cannot be moved. The way to make it smaller (the smallest it can be) is to uninstall, reinstall, and NOT use “Inherit Backup State”. It will repush all your files, in the process clearing the “history” of everything that has occurred which shrinks this folder to the theoretical minimum. It will then slowly grow from there to about 1 GByte over the first year of operation. Maybe 2 GBytes over 3 years, etc.

Another idea is to upgrade your internal SSD. The Samsung EVO series is ridiculously good, and a 256 GByte doubling of your capacity is $50 from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-250GB-Internal-MZ-76E250B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8/

Depending on your form factor, they go all the way down to $25 for a 256 GByte Kingston SSD. I would still recommend the “EVO” if you can afford it, they are fast and reliable.

u/pb4000 · 3 pointsr/suggestapc

That's not a bad rig, but at that price point, you deserve something with an ssd. It will make your overall experience much snappier. After getting an ssd, I can never go back to a regular hard drive. I also feel that, if you're going to get an rx 580, you might as well go with the 8gb variant over the 4gb.

I realize that it can sometimes be hard to find pre-builts with ssds. Another good option in my opinion is to buy a pre-built with no ssd (ie, the one you linked), and then throw in your own ssd. If you really want to keep costs down, this is a 120gb from adata for just over $20 that has been serving me well:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNLY1R2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Bbp-BbXNPMFQ9

If you wanted to get a bit more storage however, I really like the Samsung 250gb for around $50:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kdp-Bb0AGT49S

There's other options out there, but those are my personal picks. If you don't want to do any custom work though and would prefer more plug and play, then I'm not sure at the moment. If you find another pc with an ssd, then I would strongly recommend that over the one that you have linked.

Over all though, it's a decent build.

(sorry for formatting, on mobile)

u/Vision3015 · 3 pointsr/buildapcforme

Everything looks great but I would get an ssd as an os boot drive and the hard drive for mass storage. It will make a huge difference in the responsiveness of your system.
Even on a budget I found this $30 250gb drive.

u/Timmace · 2 pointsr/PUBGXboxOne

It absolutely helps but it has to be a Solid State Drive, not just an external hard drive. I bought this Samsung one back in April and it is actually $12 cheaper than when I bought it. Since that was months ago, someone might have a more current example of which is currently the best on market. I've been very happy with it though.

depends what you mean by "better"

internal would probably be more effective, however it is much harder to install and you could seriously screw something up in your console if you install it improperly

external is much easier to install and setup, while still giving you a massive boost in speeds

here is what I bought, it is external.. you plug the ssd into the case and plug the case into console, simple as that

Definetely go with a SSD My MacBook Pro is almost like a new computer after installing one. But If you want the best of both worlds I’d advise you replace your optical drive with a HDD caddy and install your current HDD there, installing a SSD in It’s place. The installing process is fairly simple watch the videos of people doing it closely and watch out for the flex cable. Installing the SSD in place of the HDD is pretty easy as well. The guide says you need a T6 screwdriver for the studs of the HDD but it can be disassembled and reassembled with just pliers. Go for a 250GB SSD It’s enough for everything I currently use on a daily basis including the whole adobe lineup, my photos and videos. Good luck! Please ask if you have any other questions in your head ^^

If you are not using -noasync command, then only SSD can help you. And even if you are using it, the beyond mod is unplayable because the monsters aren't preloaded and since you have asynchronous loading turned off, the game will have to load it, thus freeze your game.

Seriously get an SSD, your gameplay experience will change immensely. This is the best bang for your bucks. For 15 more, you can get 500gb.

u/Yo_Soy_Dabesss · 2 pointsr/IWantToLearn

If you've got an i3 it's probably not too old to upgrade and you almost definitely have a SATA hard drive in your PC right now. Swap that for an SSD and do a new clean install of windows and it'll run better than it ever has before. Going to 8GB of ram would help as well but the SSD will make a much more noticeable difference so if you're tight on cash I'd say do the SSD no matter what. Something like this or even better this

u/thnok · 2 pointsr/mac

Thats a great build. IF its within your budget, look into a cheap/small SSD for a boot drive.

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-250GB-Internal-MZ-76E250B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=256gb+ssd&qid=1550689557&s=gateway&sr=8-4

There is a link for a 2.5" 256GB ssd. Samsung Evo 860 for $57.

You can get different brands for cheaper and even in the m.2 form factor ( it does the same thing it just looks different and plugs into a different port. )

Other than all that ^ , you have a solid build.

Edit: do you need a copy of windows? If so incorporate that into your budget.

Buying a solid state drive to upgrade a 2010 MacBook Pro. Between the following, is there any major differences I'll notice? I'm not a power user by any means, just looking to improve boot/app start times. Looking at ~250GB. I'm leaning towards the ADATA solely based on price and can easily be swayed towards the others.

Samsung 860 EVO

Crucial MX500

ADATA SU800

u/PersonSuitTV · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I would recommend a 128GB or higher. The reasons you will want at least 128GB would be one for SSD health you want to over provision the drive about 10% using the software. This ensures fast performance even during max capacity. Windows install itself will be just under 20GB but it will want to update from time to time and you need space for the updates, not only for the download of the updates themselves but for it to actually unpack and install the updates.

I'll list a couple of SSD's I would recommend. M.2 will be more expensive but has over 4 times faster performance. Honestly you may not notice it though as the SATA SSD is already really fast.

:EDIT::
Sorry, didn't read that you already have it. Yes it's a solid upgrade, load times are much faster with an SSD. Menus, loading up strikes/tower/loading wall. All are faster than the spinning mechanical hard drives that are in the system currently. Also agree with above, you have to move the entire Destiny 2 game over to the SSD.

Yup. Instant on this SSD and this enclosure plugged in via USB on a used OG Xbox One. FWIW, it loads just as fast as the game does for me on PC, on an M.2 SSD.

On both machines, I regularly preview and change shaders while loading into a game. It's slower while loading, but it goes about as fast as a normal Xbox HDD does while not loading in. While not loading in on my setup, it's instant. Also, load times for areas and activities (solo ones anyway) is way faster. I never get stuck in the strike "loading levitation" and I rarely have time to take a hit when I'm traveling to the tower anymore ;)

u/Eldfinnr · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thanks for the tip!

It looks like this Samsung 860 Evo, both 250 and 500GB have the M.2 form factor? I hope I'm reading that right haha.

u/ckahane · 1 pointr/buildapc

1) You know what... I totally already knew that (the existence of M.2 SSDs using SATA) and somehow TOTALLY just forgot/blanked, so holy crap THANK YOU! $9 extra for a cable-free option doesn't seem all that bad to me.

2) that Samsung 960 EVO - NVMe M.2 you linked to at the bottom is a great deal, and "only $12 more" sounds great. However, that's when it's being compared to the 850 EVO 2.5". I was originally looking at the 860 EVO 2.5", which (despite being the newer model) is actually about $30 cheaper. SO the real comparison to make is between the 860 EVO 2.5" and the 960 EVO - NVMe M.2 which, well, there's that $40 difference that I dunno is necessary for me

EDIT - With all that in mind, ANOTHER question then arises. If I'm looking at the 860 EVO options, there IS an M.2 SATA version of that, but it's approx. $15 more than the 2.5" version. So is $15 more for no cords worth it? I thought $9 wasn't too bad. But $40 sounds troublesome.

UGGHHH. This is the part of PC building I hate. Incremental upgrade options are the effing kryptonite to my Type A personality

u/Comp625 · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

Strategy games are actually quite dependent on CPU power. That said, the Ryzen 3 1300x isn't bad for a first time build. It computes faster than Ryzen 5, and Intel i3's according to this Tom's Hardware benchmark.

Instead of a CPU upgrade, I'd recommend getting a small SSD and installing at least Windows on there. It'll make you're entire PC feel a lot faster with every type of task (booting up, opening browser, loading games, etc.)Here is a good one for $80.

The last bit of advice I'll give is that ADATA tends to make cheaper quality stuff, including their RAM, albeit at a slightly lower price point. For nearly the same price (about $10 more), you can get more reliable memory from Corsair, Gskill, etc. Yes, memory sticks can die over time. :)

u/jaurein · 1 pointr/PUBGXboxOne

-Samsung T5 external 250GB+ $119

-MyDigitalSSD OTG v2 240GB+ $90

-Samsung 860 EVO 250GB+ $80 + $20 enclosure w/ USB 3.0

Any of these will work great. T5 is the best performing, the OTG is probably the cheapest overall considering enclosures. The first two are plug and play, the third one you need the enclosure to use.

I have both of the first two.

Some considerations:

-You can use a regular USB stick of the 240GB+ class, but it will corrupt and die out sooner than a purpose-built SSD (about 10x the life expectancy). USB sticks are a little slower on read/write as well.

-Getting an external HDD like a mypassport will not load you in as fast as an SSD but will still slightly improve performance on an OG/S if you can't swing the extra ~$40 (I have one of those too and don't recommend it for this game)

u/marcnunez · 1 pointr/macbookpro

A lot of people online have recommended this one but I haven’t found any articles or posts saying that it is compatible with my specific MacBook. Samsung makes pretty good products so I have absolutely no issue buying this SSD if it is compatible with my MacBook Pro.

Besides the naming conventions, I did a lot. For those of you actually interested in that:

First, I took out the original 250GB HDD and swapped in a Samsung 860 250 GB SSD, named Octavious, to house the OS, and any of the apps I use frequently.

Next, I took out the optical drive and swapped it with an iFixit secondary drive slot, where I put in a 500GB HDD, named Parker. This will be where I’m going to store most of my actual files.

Finally, I swapped out 4GB the RAM with 16GB. Go big or go home.

Oh, and I replaced the fan with one off ifixit.

Decided I’m not going to pull from a backup, so I need to install OSX over the internet, and will need to manually upgrade from Lion, but I’m cool with that.

Windows, although it would be a good idea to put Steam and SteamVR on it as well, mostly for the startup times. You can get a 250 GB SSD for ~$60. This is the one I use, and it's been great. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8

I think it was well worth it, it's great being able to power on my PC and be in SteamVR in less than two minutes.

u/Nyteowls · 1 pointr/DataHoarder

I gotta respond to a fellow Owl! I also did similar topic replies earlier today. If the 350GB HDD is running your OS then your first step would to be to get a cheap 250gb SSD and transfer your OS onto there. How many extra HDDs bays do you have within your computer? Next step would be to get a 8TB or 10TB shuckable HDD on sale, Easystore and Elements drives are good.
https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/dmisv3/anyone_familiar_with_backblaze_storage_pods/f55nxpp/

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B07864WMK8/

But to expand upon that it really depends on how much money you want to spend and the quality of a setup you can get by with for now. As history has shown, every dollar you spend now gets you less than what you can get next year. Putting that aside though, you do need a base level set up and upgrade from there. The cheapest is just to reuse your computer as a "NAS". You could purchase Drivepool (Windows) if you want to pool/combine all of the drives onto one drive letter/mount point or use free MergerFS (Linux) standalone or within OMV4 OS (also free).

There is a real void in the market for cheap low end stuff that you can expand cheaply. You can use USB external storage, but USB is finicky so don't trust any raid setups via USB, but Snapraid might be ok'ish... You want a network attachment with one of the following.
https://ameridroid.com/products/odroid-hc2
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076G6YKWZ/
https://forums.serverbuilds.net/t/nas-killer-4-0-build-guide-fast-quiet-power-efficient-and-flexible-starting-at-125/667/12

Since you already have a computer up and running then you can skip the odroid, but it's still good for standalone NAS backups of your OS or VMs. The Synology is new AND it is network attached, not USB attached; however it is only 2 bay (4 bay is too pricey), it has minimal processing power and upgradeability with no storage expandability. Depending on your location and shipping then ebay would have the highest value per dollar spent if you make the right purchase and the used device doesn't crap out shortly after... I made a ton of posts on all this, so if you want start reading up. Just click on the link then read and keep following the links and reading, have fun.

Here's what you should do. Put another 4GB RAM stick in there for a total of 8GB. Then, get this SSD and replace the HDD with it, and you're basically set:

Get the 500GB version if you can afford it.

u/MYCRAFTisbest · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

From what you described, getting an SSD would almost definitely be the answer you're looking for.

As far as the failure issue, while SSDs are harder to recover data from, they have very low failure rates and are predictable enough to where software can basically tell you when you need a new one. They also loose data fairly quickly if you ever put the drive into storage. After 2-3 years of non-use it could have files corrupted or missing. None of this should be a problem if you're using the laptop at least once a year and backing up externally.

The biggest problem is your budget. If you're looking for a quality SSD, presumably a 2.5" SATA drive since that's what your laptop is using for the HDD, $100 US would get you about 250 gigs for that price. Samsung is probably the most trusted and popular option for fast reliable SSDs. If you have multiple drive bays or a M.2 slot then this isn't as big of an issue but if that's your only drive I don't think 250gigs is enough IMO to store the OS, multiple large games, and projects in development.

If you do have a place for a separate drive, you could easilly get away with one of these and just re-install the OS to it.

u/ravenousjoe · 1 pointr/bapcsalescanada

No, it is worth only about $40 considering you can sell the sshd for $50 as it is brand new and you would only need to install windows or clone the drive.

Companies are still charging way too much for a "premium". Imo 256 Gb is completely suitable for a laptop drive especially if it's intended use is schooling or work.

Edit: lol to the down votes. I don't know about you guys, but most of the SSDs I see are sub $100 now. Certainly not $200.

So I'm looking to bulid a new computer and I'm trying to decide which storage device I should pick if both are the exact same price, 860 EVO or Intel 660p M.2 2280. I'm mainly using this computer for gaming.

EDIT: Added what I'm using the computer for.

u/QuantumLarp · 1 pointr/buildapc

What is this PC going to be used for?

If its just storing things, I recommend something like this Western Digital Drive

Its one of the most reliable drives out there (aside from SSDs) and comes in sizes ranging 1 to 10 TB.

Now if you're gaming and/or enjoy using a fast computer, I really suggest getting a small boot drive that's an SSD that can hold your OS and applications along with maybe your favorite game and then also get a HDD for storage.

I have a Samsung 860 EVO and the smaller 256 GB one can be found for $50-60 and it really does make a world of difference. I know you said its not in the budget but its worth looking into if not just for planning down the road.

Edit: I'll also add you should pay attention to the RPM speed of the regular HDD you get. The one I linked is 5400 RPM and is on the slow side, but it is reliable. They come in 7200 RPM speeds and higher but there also is a difference in cost. Check out Western Digital Blue label for a faster spinning disk.

Remove the CPU Cooler. The 2700x got its own cooler, which is a relatively good one (probably even better than the Hyper 212 evo).

The Motherboard: I'm not sure, it is a micro ATX board, which will likely limit your upgradability options in the future, but I haven't looked into this one yet to be sure. You do want to research a lot about it though.

RAM: It is okay. Does the job. 3000mhz would be better, but you could get by with the 2400. It won't make a big difference anyway.

GPU is good, but I would try to get an Evga variant, as they have great warranties and customer support.

Case: No idea. Never heard of that brand before, but it is a microATX, which also limits future upgradability (goes hand in hand with the motherboard). If you're willing to change the case, this is an amazing one, for only a bit more (but probably won't make sense to get it with a microATX Motherboard, so keep that in mind):

I plugged mine into the usb slot in the back of my PS4 Pro (I think normal has one too). Works like a charm. Game loads before the primary theme finishes, and in-game menus and planets/zones load substantially quicker (but not instantly, still some wait).

Worth the ~$60 when you think of the cumulative hours saved on even just sifting through menus.

NOTE: I have noticed a bug that crops up now from loading “warp” too quickly. The “takeoff” animation will run without my ship following (just camera), causing the game to take a few beats on a black screen before loading the “warp” part of the load screen. If it's got a spinning drive, replace with an SSD. This should be the highest priority, the result would be like using a different and newer machine.

It's not that expensive. Depends on what size you need: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8/
If you get the one with external enclosure you can use the old disk for backups and additional storage.

u/liquidrive · 1 pointr/laptops

TL;DR: the most straightforward way to swap a drive is the external USB disk method I described before. But if you want to get fancy, read below.

(apologies if this is information overload and just confusing you more. Then just ignore this post)

It's possible to clone your internal SSD directly to the new SSD without two slots, depending on the SSD you are using.

If it's a standard 2.5in SATA drive (something like this) then you can attach the new drive to your laptop over USB with a cable like this one). This will be faster, easier and cheaper than using the external drive method I mentioned earlier.

If it's an m.2 SATA SSD (like this one) you can also attach it via USB with an adaptor (like this one)

If it's an m.2 NVMe drive and you only have one slot... then you need to do the external USB disk method I mentioned before.

Okay, so like there's a jumble of wires behind the motherboard, there should probably be a sata power cable in that mess?

That's true with the CD Drive, I may re-use it if I don't have any other options. So I listed the two things that I'd probably buy below, if I have that Sata Power cable from the PSU in the back and bought these two, I'd have everything I need?

Prices on SSDs have come way down. If you're okay giving up a bit of capacity you can pick them up really cheap. Even a Samsung 860 EVO is under $60 for 256GB.

I'd really recommend not getting an HDD because of performance, but if you're willing to live with it, sure.

The other option is you could try to "repair" it. If it's not physical damage, the OS can kind of just ignore that space.

oh I thought I saw 250gb ssd on your pc part picker list. Yah, I would get an ssd anyway since they are much better and use it as a boot drive. You can get an SSD for like 100$, less if you get a 250gb. Transfer your files like documents and pictures and stuff to an external drive, take a picture of all the programs you have on your hdd or write down the ones you actually use and just start fresh. I did that when I installed a new ssd just so I could have a fresh install of windows. For me it was useless since I had no issues and could've just cloned my old ssd, but for you, youre having some kind of error that I think a fresh install would fix. After 4-5 years of this PC maybe its time to let go of all the old junk and start fresh !

edit: Heres an ssd for less than 100$, 30$ more for 500gb if you want

I found this one on Amazon:

Samsung SSD 860 EVO 250GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E250B/AM)

I'm looking to buy a new SSD (Either SATA or M.2), and I don't understand necessarily the extreme differences in prices that I'm seeing for what looks like the same hardware.

Ex.

This 256 GB Samsung SSD ($59) and this 256 GB Samsung SSD ($194)

I got a Samsung 850 Evo 250gb. The upgraded one, the 860 is on sale for 85$. Samsung 860 EVO 250GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E250B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_sYJ2AbX5GER6C
Get whatever enclosure with it and you’re jammin.

Battery life and performance are mortal enemies. When you start buying beefier hardware in a mobile form factor, battery life will always suffer.

Another option would be upgrading your old laptop. Maxing out the RAM at 16GB and swapping the HDD for an SSD will breathe new life into the laptop. This is a bit of a risk, however, due to the age. If the motherboard dies, you’re left with RAM you likely will never use elsewhere. The SSD could be reused. The cost savings vs. a brand new laptop may be worth the risk.

Here is a video comparing boot times of your old laptop using an HDD vs and SSD:

I’d recommend this RAM kit:

I’d recommend this SSD:

250GB is a nice baseline, but you can spend more money for a larger size if you desire.

Here is a video of someone upgrading the RAM and SSD in a similar HP laptop:

I second the Dell Optiplex.

Here's one for $150. It includes an i5 3550, 8GB of ram, a 500GB HDD, an optical drive, and Windows 10 Pro. A very good deal that will overcome the overpriced ram problem.

Here's a $90 1080p, 60Hz, IPS monitor.

Here's a $225 GTX 1050 Ti (MSRP: $140). All graphics cards above a GT 1030 are overpriced right now.

Here's a $95 Samsung 860 EVO 250GB SSD. You can clone the operating system on the HDD to it.

Here's a $27 blue switch mechanical keyboard. (or if you want a more silent keyboard get this $40 brown switch keyboard).

You may want to replace the power supply. Here's a good one for $50.

      Total: $637

I'm sorry, but you will have to forgo having a blue case with LEDs and a side-window if you wish to have a decent PC at or below your $700 budget. Good luck building!

This combination worked very well for me recently:
SEDNA PCI Express (PCIe) SATA III (6G) SSD Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01452SP1O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_KgJJAbBJKV9HD
and
Samsung 860 EVO 250GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E250B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07864WMK8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EiJJAbD40HZ6J

The SSD did not work with the Dell H700 raid card.
