We have done the same with our tC with the help of a scangauge 2. (http://www.amazon.com/ScanGauge-Compact-Multifunction-Computer-Customizable/dp/B000AAMY86/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299913937&sr=8-1)
We found the sweetspot (between 45-50mph) and on little trips around town we can get up to 40mpg. The scangauge isn't the cheapest of gadgets, but the instant mpg and average per trip has really helped us learn how to drive smarter.

I've got this one that I use for my C-Max.

But I can't really recommend it exactly; it was suggested by someone on the C-Max forums, and I didn't want to worry about whether the instructions to set up the battery readings would differ by product or if others had the same functionality. I also don't know if instructions exist for setting up for the Volt. (I had to "program" it specifically to read things like the SoC and battery temperature by entering a bunch of numbers that were posted up on that forum.)

Get a 20 bt (or wifi i you want more speed), or get a scanguage and hardwire it into your car.

I have tried hypermiling, not really my thing. I have a Brother-in-law that is huge into hypermiling. Kind of scary to ride with him. He once took my car out on a 60 mile ride, 1/2 city, 1/2 expressway. On that route I would usually average 28-30mpg. He did it at 41mpg.

If I am not in a hurry I will draft on the expressway behind a semi, can usually gain 5-6mpg.

If you are serious into fuel mileage and your car does not have a good instant read out, invest in a ScanGauge.

I bought a ScanGauge for $160 back in 2007. I have a fancy Android phone now; I think it may be time to upgrade my setup.

Along those lines, I can recommend the ScanGuage II http://amzn.com/B000AAMY86

I have had one on my '06 Jetta TDI for 3.5 years now and I get consistently >40MPG per tank in 135+ tanks of fuel

Look into getting yourself a ScanGauge. You can set it so that it displays a bunch of very cool vital engine readouts. I have one of my readouts to be engine coolant temperature. Subarus tend to run at about 182 degrees when they are fully warm. I don't like to even move my car before the coolant gets to 80 degrees. When drive a car with the engine cold, (especially in these negative temperature days), the oil is thick. Putting a large strain on your engine (lugging or high revs) can shear the thick oil between the crankshaft and bearings, leading to some wear. Warming up your car for even a minute or two can severely reduce the amount of wear your car endures when driving cold. Another thing to worry about, completely unrelated to oil, is the head itself. I have seen this a few times, but starting your car cold, and then romping on it right away put a LOT of heat into the heads of the car, and can cause cracks in the head, leading to a leaking coolant or oil into your intake, or exhaust. So just warm up your car for a minute or two and drive it nice and easy until it heats up all the way!

Not the one who originally posted the comment you're replying to, but it sounds like they're using the ScanGauge II (on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AAMY86/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sXn6Bb727WMKV) - I use this in my '18 Impreza, and it's really helpful to have on hand. You can have it display four stats at a time on the screen - I have it set to show me my RPMs, battery voltage, water temperature, and there's one other thing it displays but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head. It'll also give you error codes when error lights pop up on your dashboard, which is helpful. It's definitely worth the money.

Yes it does (or should, anyway), it's part of the OBDII standard. That's how those plug-and-play trip computers work.

I was also curious about this when I discovered my 17 SV didn't have a proper computer, just Trip A and B. Someone suggested an aftermarket computer like the one linked below, but frankly I didn't want to spend the money and I got over it. Now I reset my trip and quickly compute my mileage when I fill up at the pumps. I also know roughly how many KMs I get a tank so it hasn't really bothered me too much. You could try calling your dealership and seeing if they will install a different computer but something tells me it will be a hefty bill. Best of luck.
