This is the hard drive I bought to replace my 500GB stock HDD.

Checking my order history, I bought it on July 31, 2015, so I've been using it for nearly 2 years now with not a single issue. I've even had it in two different PS4s, my original PS4 and now my PS4 Pro and it's still running strong. The electricity goes out constantly where I live, usually for a split second and back on again, so my PS4 has to check the HDD status like, literally, twice a week, and still I've never had any corrupted data, never had to reinitialise the system, etc.

So I can definitely recommend that drive. One thing to note about the enclosure though. Be very careful when you remove the 2TB drive from it if you plan to use the enclosure with the old 500GB drive. I wasn't paying close enough attention to how it was put together and accidentally ended up pulling something out of it that I shouldn't have, and ended up having to buy a new enclosure for my old drive.

They are used almost exclusively for media playback - I have Plex Media Server with two Nexus Players in the house. For this purpose, they are more than adequate. I do store some other data on them, but said data is 100% read from / written to the drives via gigabit network connections, which is nothing for pretty much any consumer spinning-rust drive...

One of them was purchased as an internal OEM/Bare drive, the other two were purchased as a USB3 'portable' that I shucked / sold off the casing (Linky / Linky. I bought the OEM/Bare drive first, not knowing that the USB3 'portable' drives had the same (or substantially similar) drive in them, and WEREN'T built like the stupid WD/Toshiba drives (where the controller on the drive had the USB interface built into the drive, so they literally couldn't be shucked / used internally), AND they were about $20-30 less expensive (and still are -- the internal is showing at $110, while the USB3 version is on sale at $89)...

On a related note -- I should mention I've hated WD drives for a very long time. When I left the IT field (at the end of this January), I had a stack (more than 20) of dead WD SATA drives (mostly blues, but several Blacks) in my office window sill. Of the hundreds of Dell Optiplexes we dealt with, it was extremely rare for a Seagate to die, and if it did, 9 times out of 10 it was under warranty. Can't say the same for the WDs at all. I know MANY people on the intarwebz (here, Linus Tech Tips, Tom's Hardware, really any tech forum / blog) swear by them, but I will no longer let them anywhere near my equipment. I used to use Hitachi (after IBM sold / spun them off) along side my Seagates, but now that WD owns them, well, I'll have to see how things change over time before I buy any more...

If you're looking for slightly more powerful graphics (especially if you have a 4K tv) the Ps4 pro is the way to go. The Ps4 slim model is smaller but in my opinion not worth getting. Of course you have the original ps4 which is definitely a solid choice. On the issue of memory you can easily change out the standard 500 gb storage device on the original ps4 for a 2 tb one all you need is a screwdriver and a usb.

Edit: I feel that 500 gigabytes will fill quickly and 1 terabyte is a good medium between price and storage space. However, if you buy most of your games digitally I would recommend 1-2 terabytes as all the digital games will start to eat up storage and also bring the hassle of having to reinstall through the Internet rather than on disc.

It is this one:

Thanks for the tips. I always format my HDD's right after I open them.

Looking at the wishlist of /u/annaleiia, I'm noticing a fair bit of tech. If I was going to single anything out, this has been listed as high priority right now and it looks like it falls in the price range of this contest! I'm nominating her based on the fact that she has cats named after Harry Potter characters and has great taste in literature.

Gimme some tech Daddi!

I buy the Seagate 2tb portable drives all the time - I like to yank the drives out of them for game consoles and PC's, but the enclosures are nice and handy too.

This one is on sale for $69 currently: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA2000400/dp/B00TKFEE5S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497633141&sr=8-3&keywords=seagate+2tb+external+hard+drive

These sometimes drop to $69 from time to time: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTTJE/ref=twister_B01CQV9RDG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Or make sure you're signed up for the Newegg newsletters, they both come across at $65 on occassion.

I currently have 5 of these drives in operation and have had no issues with them.

Oh yeah, I guess I should detail what everything is. Top to bottom. Left to right:

u/usrevenge · 2 pointsr/PS4

I believe it was this one

you take the HDD out of the external casing and the actual hard drive is samsung.

back when i did this you almost couldn't find the 2TB drive separate and I still think it's cheaper to get the external and take the drive out of it.

then you can take the old ps4 hard drive and put inside the external enclosure and with a little work and formating it you can turn it into an external drive for your xbox one, wii-u (i think) or for your pc.

looking at my ps4 i actually only have 850gb of space but i just installed overwatch and re-installed TESO which is like 70gb so yea.

2TB should be fine i have about a dozen games installed i have no plan on playing again but i just leave it there because meh (example, borderlands handsome collection and black ops 3 combined taking 90gb)

u/Loki_d20 · 1 pointr/PS4

Upgrade. You can find good 2TB that are faster than the stock for $80 by buying an external Samsung or Seagate or the like and taking out the HDD from the inside.

This is a very popular one: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FRHTTJE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Been using it a while now. Worked perfectly for me.

I have replaced the original with this and have not have any issues until this game, and non after it. Interesting.

u/legendisreal · 1 pointr/PS4

As someone who doesn't know a damn thing about HDDs, is there a specific type that will fit the PS4? I just saw this deal (though I'm in Australia it still seems pretty good), is that what you've used?

u/donbokai · 1 pointr/buildapc

woops, 1 more thing. Will this work well with my build

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Cache-Desktop-ST2000DM006/dp/B01IEKG402/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1525547145&sr=8-5&keywords=hard+drive+2tb+seagate

or would it be better to get an external drive?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTTJE/?tag=pcpapi-20

very similar price for same thing

also seems safer to have an internal because less likely to corrupt data from accidentally unplugging

u/PirouzAaron · 1 pointr/PS4

If you want to upgrade the internal drive to a 2TB one you can use this one, it fits in the pro and the original PS4 (not sure about the slim) and you don't need to modify the chassis. You just need to shuck the drive from the enclosure, it's pretty easy and there are videos online you can follow.

u/LKummer · 1 pointr/Guitar

That does change it a bit.

The older Razer Blade Stealth is also available as a refurb unit for 1400 CAD for the QHD 256GB and 1900 CAD for the UHD 512GB but I don't think they're worth it since they only have 8GB of RAM.

16GB of RAM vs 8GB is a pretty big one IMO. I've just opened a very small project with BFD3 to check it out and it brought be up to 10.5GB usage, if you plan on using anything similar or Kontakt libraries now or in the future you should really care for this.

The CPU on the Blade is a bit faster and more power efficient. But this is negligible.

The storage is up to you. I think you'll end up with an external HDD anyway with both and they're really cheap. There's no reason to pay for an SSD if you plan on using it for storage, especially not those expensive NVMe SSDs you're paying for in these laptops.

There's also this Asus ZenBook coming in at 1500 CAD which has a higher resolution display than the Macbook, has an i7 6500U, 12GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

The Razer is pretty much the Macbook of the PC world.

I ordered it on black friday when it was on sale, so less than $100 Canadian with taxes. It is the same drive that a lot of people seem to be buying as the cost is reasonable and all you need to do is remove the outer casing and pop it in the PS4.

u/shawnbttu · 1 pointr/xboxone

> WD Black Series 7200 RPM

sorry to hijack this comment..but do you guys think this one witll work: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Backup-Portable-External-STDR2000103/dp/B00FRHTTJE/ref=pd_cp_pc_3

i just want a low profile drive that can be USB powered

u/MunkyUTK · 1 pointr/PS4

This is the one you need. It has the Samsung M9T drive in it, which is the officially supported drive.

u/kaztrator · 1 pointr/PS4

Buy this one. $70, it's the cheapest you will get. Works like a charm.

u/SnoT8282 · 1 pointr/xboxone

Got this on sale this past holiday season. Seagate 2tb backup plus USB 3.0 drive.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTTJE/

For $50. So far so good. Got it a little more than half filled. No games on internal since I got this.

u/__pizza__ · 0 pointsr/PS4

Amazon. This was on sale for $85 a few weeks ago, it was posted all over this sub.

u/MThearts · 0 pointsr/playstation

I got this for my PS4, itll work for the ps3 and its only 100 right now and this will be enough storage for a good while!
