I'll try to keep tabs on everything but let me know if there are any errors or price updates. And as a side note, I'm actually getting downvotes for this? I can't see how there could possibly be a sane explanation for that.

EDIT: Updated 7:00pm EST!! Let me know if there's anything you see and I'll put it in here!

EDIT: I've put everything new as of Jan 11, 4:00pm in bold. Also, check this post on RedFlagDeals for a great big list of deal

EDIT: Its all over everyhone. Hope you snagged something cool beyond bitter disappointment this year!**

Yeah I just took retail pricing off PS website. But hell for that price do it and just swap out the HDD before you start saving games. I went with a Seagate 1TB Firecuda Gaming.

u/paperwaller · 4 pointsr/techsupport

It could be your HDD going. /u/Synrox is right. My laptop gave me near identical symptoms and I ended up going with this as a replacement.

u/sphoenixp · 3 pointsr/india

I don't think an SSD is necessary for a normal guy unless he is going to use resource heavy apps/gaming. A firecuda SSHD is awesome. Also, i think if you have a tech friend or a pro user buy a dos laptop.
And since He wants to learn linux he can put 2 HDD dedicated for each boot drive using a CADDY like this. SSHD for windows and the hhd which he got with the laptop for Linux. one looses the cd drive but then who uses a cd drive nowadays.

u/mlwoo · 3 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

Apparently PS4s aren’t equipped to use an SSD to their full capability, so I got a TB SSHD and installed it in my PS4. It took less than ten minutes and I’ve stopped having crazy frame rate drops or random disconnects.

I know nothing about computer hardware so please don’t flame me if me it my SSD comment was incorrect. I researched on the internet.

It is incredibly easy to replace the HDD on the Slim or phat versions of the PS4. Multiple tutorials online from PlayStation and hundreds from other gamers.

I use these in my PS4s and haven't been disappointed. If you have the money you could also get a 2TB version. Also keep in mind with FW 4.50 it has support for external HDDs with USB 3.0. Good luck hope it helps.

An SSHD, is a hard drive with a small ssd inside (ssd's are much faster than hdd's as they have no moving parts).

I usually recommend avoiding sshd, as they usually are crappy.

If you can afford it, buy a normal ssd. A 275gb one is around $90, $500gb is around $150, $1tb is around $170.

But here's an sshd: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWRTRZU/?tag=pcpapi-20

u/Mr_Siphon · 2 pointsr/xboxone

Personally i would get a 2.5inch SSHD (almost as fast as an SSD but as cheap as a HDD) and get any external USB 3.0 2.5inch enclosure. I picked up a the 1tb Seagate Firecuda for £55 and its great.

Edit: This is what i use

Firecuda SSHD

External Hard drive Enclosure

u/FoN925 · 2 pointsr/PS4

Well, this HDD was on sale for $20 off yesterday, only $69.99, meaning you could have gotten a 2TB drive for only $10 more than the 1TB version of the same HDD. It is one of the most often used HDDs for PS4 internal drive upgrades.

This is the drive I bought for my PS4. It comes in an enclosure, and is really meant to be used as an external USB drive. However, since I was removing the 1TB drive from my Pro, I just took the 2TB drive out of the enclosure and put the 1TB drive in it so I could have that extra 1TB as backup storage for my gaming PC.

If you buy the same drive I bought, or any other 2.5" drive that comes in an enclosure, keep in mind that removing the drive from the enclosure for use in the PS4 voids the warranty. Fortunately, I bought my 2TB drive on July 31, 2015 and have used it in two different PS4s and it is still working great.

If you are looking specifically for a budget 1TB drive and just don't want to (or can't afford to) spend the extra $10-$20 to go with a 2TB drive, either one of these drives will work fine:

Looks like Amazon has the same price now as well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWRTRZU?th=1

u/Dusty4life · 2 pointsr/buildapc

for the b450 motherboard. The best out there is the MSI B450 Tomahawk.

I would suggest something like this for the HDD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LWRTRZU?linkCode=gs2&tag=bgfg09-21

Or at the very least, a regular 7200-RPM hard drive instead of 5400 rpm.

Everything else is gooooood.

u/LonerIM2 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would go with the additional HHD .

u/texzone · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Highly recommend just buying an internal HDD! I can do you one better! It's an SSHD - a hybrid between a hard drive and ssd (if you don't already know) and it's wicked fast. It's insanely easy to install on the predator, just watch this video. One problem you might face is not receiving a bracket (many people have had this problem). To remedy it, you need to contact support

u/freakingwilly · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I knew this sounded familiar...

After 6 years in my posession, my MSI GT70 0nc has NOT aged well at all

  1. BSODs and slow startup- You were informed that the HDD is likely dying and were recommended an SSD swap. If you cannot afford a high capacity SSD, the Seagate Firecuda is an excellent replacement.
  2. Monitor cable loose - Remove the bezel on your LCD and reattach the loose cable. It's more likely that the ribbon is pinched/damaged and drops the connection. YouTube video to help you take apart the LCD and find the ribbon.
  3. USB 3.0 not working - Check to make sure that the wire you are using on your external SSD is good. Pins 5-9 on the male end connector may be bent/damaged and force a USB 2.0 connection instead.
  4. Headphone jack - Use a toothpick to clean out the headphone port. If you are willing to take it apart, make sure your headphones are making good contact. Otherwise, just buy a USB sound card.

    Keep us posted.
u/AplexApple · 2 pointsr/AlienwareAlpha

Ram is fairly easy to swap out so is the hard drive. Just requires a lot of screwing.

You can see how to replace the ram here
https://youtu.be/TANTrDdtZY4

Any DDR3l laptop ram would work, like this one -
Crucial 4GB Single 1600MHz (PC3-12800) CL11 204-Pin SODIMM DDR3L-SDRAM Memory (CT51264BF160BJ) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009RBN6I6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0JwAybTKCDBBG

And hard-drive here -
https://youtu.be/Dr8S2S4XdMM

This is the sshd I recently bought -
Seagate 1TB Firecuda Gaming SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LX015) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWRTRZU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_YHwAybN8BQPXJ

And regarding windows 10, you can clone that using Alien respawn. Which you need a USB drive, it's shown in the video above.

Samsung 970 Evo 250 GB is $110 and 500 GB is $80...!!?

Amazon PerfectFit checker at the top of that page says

> We're not sure this item fits your ACER PREDATOR HELIOS 300 315-52-78VL

Anyway, I have a question.

Is it ok to have these storage combination -

256 GB NVMe PCIe SSD (the default storage that came in the laptop) + 512 GB NVMe PCIe SSD (new stick that I'll buy) + 1 TB 2.5" SATA SSHD (I had bought it last year and is lying unused.) on the same laptop? Is there any strict requirement like both SSDs must be of same capacity (like in case of RAM)?

u/tzzz11 · 1 pointr/ffxiv

I upgraded my slim.

Used this product:

Seagate 1TB Firecuda Gaming SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LX015) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWRTRZU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_dZRSznOjNaOYs

I did it about a week before SB released. Do I see a difference? Slightly. When idyllshire had the horrible load times, I noticed a few seconds were shaved off. I'm impatient AF so I like it. Might just be a placebo affect but eh. Another thing is that I tend to load in areas a few seconds faster than other folks (when doing hunts and instance changing) even if they are PC. But like others have said, it's not necessary and only shaves a few seconds besides the increase in storage.

u/macgiv · 1 pointr/mac

save some money and get a solid state HDD. It's a big SSD married to a HDD and the performance is excellent for a 2013 model.

https://smile.amazon.com/Seagate-FireCuda-2-5-Inch-Notebooks-ST2000LX001/dp/B01LWRTRZU/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1482722750&sr=8-13&keywords=seagate%2Blaptop&th=1

Just dropped one in my sisters 15" MBP 2012 and it's 2x faster.

u/MYCRAFTisbest · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

If it's a normal 2.5" bay, HDDs are pretty cheap and there are also SSHD hybrid drives that give you SSD speeds for important things like Windows bootup and put the rest onto a cheaper HDD platter. Here's one for $60, 8 gigs of SSD flash storage, about a TB of HDD

They aren't as good as a proper SSD or even an SSD + HDD combo, but in a laptop with a single drive bay, you could sell that 256GB SSD on ebay pretty easily at $60-90 and get yourself a bigger hybrid drive instead.

u/KyotoWolf · 1 pointr/Games

You can get the 2.5" laptop model for $125 for the 2TB option, or $70 for the 1TB version, if you don't want to just use an external HDD

u/Mercennarius · 1 pointr/xboxone

Actually they're not. I'm talking about an SSHD, not an SSD. A 1TB SSHD can be had for the same price or less than the hard drive pictured in this thread.($50-$60 retail, Microsoft could likely get them for $30-$40 each in mass production.)

Indeed it is. That is a pretty good tutorial. Make sure you follow the steps correctly when backing up and restoring your data.

Here is a link for the HDD I used.

You need to upgrade from the Shitty Stock HD they have in all the PS4s.

I have a a 2Tb SSHD Firecuda in my Pro. Pretty much the best upgrade you can get for the PS4 regardless of which version you have. I pulled the stock out of my Pro day one, and put this in. I play Primarily Battlefield which is known for it's horrendous Map Loadtimes, and I'm constantly first one in, waiting 45 seconds for other people to load in for matches to start.

>This load screen can last up to 3 minutes. Even if you doing the same thing over and over again

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hftHjOvcUtc - The load speeds get faster as it caches more of the map data, after a few loads of a map your load times will probably be less than half of what you have now.

The pro doesn’t come with a hard drive that takes advantage of the faster transfer rate. So getting a newer hard drive that does will see a noticeable jump

I bought and installed this one

Seagate Firecuda Gaming 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA 6GB/s 5400rpm 128 MB Cache Internal Hard drive ST1000LX015 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWRTRZU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_DCjVzRUQ1lM69

$50 is nothing for a smoother experience and hundreds of seconds saved of probably over hundreds of hours played. I looked on YouTube how to install.

I load in faster than most of my fire team and have no issue with going into menus

My only regret is getting 1TB as games take up so much space.

Just upgrade your storage.

__

Internal Drive

I'm assuming you have a 2013 model, but on any version of the PS4, replacing the internal drive is easy. It really only gets a little complicated if you want to back up your data beforehand, which you'll need to do if you want to keep your saved screenshots and video clips (though game save data and system settings will be backed up to the cloud if you have PS+, but make sure they're uploaded first). Keep in mind though that if you are thinking about re-downloading everything instead of backing up-- accepting the lost of your screenshots and video clips in the process-- this also means re-downloading all of your games.

__

The choice of what kind of drive you upgrade to is up to you.

  • If you want to considerably reduce your load times across the board, you could opt for a 1TB SSD. Sounds expensive, but SSDs have had a drastic decrease in cost over the years, so a fast, 1TB drive to cut down your load times isn't unreasonable.
  • Whether you want to get the most affordable upgrade possible or if you prioritize storage size and cost over speed, a standard HDD will do the job. NOTE: The drive options in the HDD links go past 2TB, but those larger drives are 15mm drives instead of 9mm. Long story short, nothing past 2TB will fit in a PS4 without modifications.
  • For a mix of speed and storage space / budget, you could pick up the in-between option, a hybrid drive. There's a bit of nuance to these drives, but if you're looking for the best of both worlds with a single drive, a hybrid drive does offer increased performance without sacrificing storage space.

    _

To change out your PS4's internal drive (after backing up), turn off your PS4 and change out the drives. You'll have to get the PS4 update software from here, but, do not download it from the blue button, that's a different file than what you need. Scroll down to this part of the page and click on "Perform a new installation of the system software." Read through the instructions there, and you'll download the system software from the link under step 2. Then, turn your PS4 on in Safe Mode and install the system software.

There, your system's drive is upgraded and installed, now you just restore from your PS+ cloud save or your physical drive backup.

    _

    External Drive

If you don't want to deal with all of the work of changing out your internal drive, or maybe you want to run a dual-drive system, you can use an external drive.

A good USB 3.0 drive makes a great option for bulk storage. This way you won't be limited by what can fit in your system, but more importantly, you'll have the option to separate slower bulk storage from a faster internal drive.

If you included the above external drive with, say, a 500GB or a 1TB SSD, you can have your OS, capture data, and frequently played / bigger games on a faster drive, giving your better load times across the board, whilst still having a secondary bulk drive for your game collection. This is personally what I'd recommend.

But again, if you're just looking for an easy way to increase you system's storage capacity without dealing with hard drive swapping or OS installation, you could just get a large-capacity external drive.

    __

    The Point is

Instead of getting rid of games and getting new ones, just increase the amount of space you can use to store them.

If it's say it's a hybrid hard drive, it's usually this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LWRTRZU/

Its a standard hard drive plus inbuilt bigger cacahe, 8gb in this drives case for better performance. nvme m.2 ssd is stick type ssd but different from hybrid drive. You can easily upgrade either of those to higher capacities and the new hard drive doesn't need to be hybrid.

Now we're talking!

Your GPU is integrated into the motherboard, so there's no upgrading that physically, but it's definitely got fight left in it! Aside from that, we've got some options for easy and affordable upgrades! I've ordered from what I consider the most important to the least:

Hard Drive: Fusion Drive or SSD.

Upgrading the hard drive won't improve gaming performance, but it will make everything you do on your system faster overall. Looks like you've got a 1TB 5400RPM drive in there right now. Lots of space, but bare bones performance. Upgrading to a Fusion Drive or SSD will give you a huge performance jump. SSDs are the fastest drives out there, but assuming you don't want to decrease your disk space, your going to have to pay the premium. SSHDs aka Fusion Drives offer the best of both worlds; they add flash storage to a standard drive, and optimize performance by putting the system files and most frequently used files and programs on the flash section. Huge performance boost for a MUCH lower price than an SSD. I love these things.

RAM: Upgrade from 8GB to 16GB.

According to the spec sheet, you actually could increase your GPU's available memory by using something called TurboCache, which allocates system memory for use by the GPU. If you were to do that, you'd definitely benefit from increasing the RAM! I generally stick with Crucial's RAM when upgrading. It's never steered me wrong before. It's usually cheaper to buy on Amazon, but Crucial's website seems to be having a sale on DDR3 right now, so you're in luck! They list both DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866 as being compatible, but Toshiba's spec sheet says DDR3-1600. 1866MHz RAM would work, it'd just be underclocked at 1600MHz. I'd recommend a pair of Crucial 4GB or Crucial Ballistix 4GB modules. The latter is marketed as higher quality performance RAM. I'm not personally familiar with the performance differences, but you can read their explanation here.

CPU: a faster i7

From the looks of it, your CPU could definitely be swapped out for a better one. While CPU upgrades have the potential to offer huge performance boosts, I've got it down here for a few reasons:

  • Laptop CPU upgrades are often contingent on what CPUs the manufacturer has whitelisted in the BIOS. Thus, even if a CPU is physically compatible, there's a chance it might not work. There are sometimes ways around these whitelists, but getting into BIOS mods has the potential to get real complicated real fast.
  • Upgrading the RAM and Hard Drive on your laptop is very easy. They are both easily accessible via panels on the bottom of your device. On the other hand, the CPU would require completely disassembling your laptop, removing the heatsink, reapplying thermal paste, and reassembly.
  • You've already got a Quad-Core i7. I'd be much more inclined to suggest an upgrade if you were running dual-core, i3, or even i5, but your CPU is pretty capable, all things considered. I worry that with the amount of time effort, and supplies you'd need to perform the upgrade, you'd go well past the point of diminishing returns.

All that said, I have no intention of dissuading you! If you've ever wanted to get into this sort of thing, then by all means...take chances, make mistakes, get messy! (and back up everything first.) I didn't know shit about upgrading CPUs a year ago, but we live in an age where we can use the internet to learn these skills in record time! If you want to tackle this, let me know, and we can dig deeper into which processors might be a suitable upgrade. A preliminary search tells me you might be able to swap in a 2.6GHz i7 3720QM or maybe even a 2.8GHz i7-3840QM, but more research would be needed. It's too much money to just guess!

    Wifi???

I can't find a damned thing about the wireless card for this laptop. I assume it has to have one though. You can probably upgrade it, but unless you're having connection speed issues, it's probably not necessary. Still, if you want to find out, go into device manager and tell me what your wifi card is.

Optical Drive: Extra Storage or Blu Ray

Figured I'd mention this, but it's at the bottom since it isn't directly related to improving your performance. You could swap out your DVD drive for a Hard Drive caddy or a Blu Ray drive. The caddy would let you have two internal Drives, thus letting you use one for storage, and one for Windows and programs. The advantage of this is that you could purchase a small SSD for Windows, and then repurpose your existing drive in the caddy. This is a bit more involved than simply upgrading the original drive though, and some laptops I've come across aren't thrilled with having two drives inside them. If you're feeling adventurous, it could be a fun project, but I'd recommend the SSHD otherwise.

Phew. That was a lot. Took longer than I expected too. Whoops! Before I close though, it's important to remember one thing: You don't want to spend more upgrading it than it would cost to buy a more powerful computer! Some of the components would definitely be reusable or resealable though, so you can factor that in as well.

TL;DR: You can make it better!

EDIT: Forget to ask, what exactly is causing it to die on you?

u/PalebloodSky · 1 pointr/AnthemTheGame

Just upgrade the drive. You can get a SSHD 1 or 2TB with faster load times too for like $60. Sony even has directions right on the PS4 website.

Firecuda

This one is a decent deal right now.

I just found this on Amazon. Does anyone know if this is a good drive?

If you want increased preformance on a tight budget I'd suggest the new Seagate FireCuda 2.5in SSHD's. They're so far bulletproof, cheap and fast.

TLDR: Skip the SSD, go with SSHD instead - link to drive included in post below.

As another poster has already said - an SSHD is going to be your better option with the PS4.

I did a fair bit of research about 9 months after the PS4 launched before upgrading. In most cases the performance of an SSHD is greater than that of a full SSD. In the cases that it's not, the differences are minimal. I've been running an SSHD for 2 year and it definitely makes a significant difference... Plus, it's cheap to get a 1TB, so you end up with a space upgrade at the same time.

The PS4 base system does not take full advantage of the speed an SSD can provide due to the SATA bus used in the base model. This does not appear to be the case with the PS4 Pro, which will see a fairly significant increase in speed from an SSD.

In my testing on FFXIV, the SSHD reduces the initial load time of the game by approximately 4-6 seconds as long as FFXIV was the last game i played. If something else was loaded since playing FFXIV then the load time is slowed for the first load as the drive moves data to the SSD portion.

Zoning times are reduced by about 1-5-2 seconds when loading into a dungeon (regardless of what other games have been played - the data appears to be fully cached on initial load of the game). Even though i'm on a standard PS4, i regularly load in to a dungeon while 1 or 2 people are still zoning.

For reference, this is the drive that i have currently:
https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Gaming-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483206432&sr=1-1

There is a newer model available now (which is cheaper than the current price for my drive as well): https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Firecuda-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST1000LX015/dp/B01LWRTRZU/ref=dp_ob_title_ce?th=1

The newer model has the same size NAND/SSD (8GB), but has an overall higher transfer and cache rate partly because it's a 7200 RPM drive instead of 5400. Plus, you can go all the way up to 2TB with the new model and it [should] still fit in the PS4 (i'm going off the dimensions listed on Amazon for the 2TB, because the 2TB is a double platter do a bit more research into whether this is accurate or not if you go that route).

Hope this helps!
