Seiko SKX007

Price: $200-$250

Movement: Automatic, 7S26

Style: Dive

Size: 42mm w/o crown

Link: Amazon product page

Description:
A "forum favourite" and excellent watch for any new collector is the SKX007. The SKX line of Seiko dive watches are widely loved for their classic looks, workhorse durability, and appealing price point. The watch is available on a rubber strap or steel "jubilee-style" bracelet, and there are dozens of aftermarket bracelet options to suit anyone's desire.

The watch has the look of a classic dive watch with its black rotating bezel and luminous markers. A version with a "pepsi" red/blue bezel is offered (SKX009) and is also quite popular. The watch has a hardlex (mineral) crystal and is rated to 200m, which is more than enough for all-weather wear and casual swimming / recreational snorkeling.

There isn't much else to say here, but please feel free to add comments with your experiences with / love for the SKX007. It is a rugged, classic, reliable watch and is so well-loved for good reason. Anyone looking for a sub-$250 watch would be mistaken not to consider the SKX007.

Hey nice looking watch man! All I know is that it uses a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, a common quartz movement in today's watches. Nixon is mostly associated with skaters. surfers, snowboarders, and other street sports of similar kind. As others have said though, they do not get much love around /r/Watches because they are considered a fashion brand. My first watch was a Nixon Timeteller years ago. It was good, then I lost it. Then I found it again recently.

Watch collecting can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you lurk around this sub for a while you'll see lots of different styles in all different price ranges. I love watches, but at the point in my life that I'm at right now (that being a broke college kid), I promised myself to stay in the sub $200 range for the time being. Learn the difference between quartz and mechanical first if you don't already, then here are some commonly referenced budget options out there:

There are so many more too! It really pulls you in once you scratch the surface. There's something for everybody here. Welcome to the hobby (cough addiction cough)!

Edit I always forget to mention the Vostok Amphibia. It's a Russian dive watch, built like a tank, and there are many bezel/dial combos. Found on Ebay for about $70.

For under $200, don't forget about the Seiko SKX007

Spend $230 and wear an even nicer timepiece like the Obris Morgan Branco

u/pdb1975 · 7 pointsr/Watches

Seiko SKX007 if you must have an automatic.

If digital is OK, then 2 G-shocks, one to wear, one as a backup.

u/302w · 7 pointsr/malefashionadvice

You're kinda of blending two separate looks here by wanting a casual and rubber strap, but neat dress style. To me, rubber strap + casual = diving watch.

What about these Seiko divers:

Really tough watch, which is good for a gym setting, not too flashy (because if you're thinking too much about how your watch looks at the gym, you're not working out properly), rubber strap is better than nylon or leather because of sweat. Plus, it's something that can easily be worn outside of the gym as well, just a great watch overall.

Having said this, I really urge you to look at a digital like this G-Shock. Provides a lot of functions that might be useful in the gym that you won't get with a watch like the easy reader or the Seiko I showed, they're tough as nails (I've had one for about 10 years now and is still in great condition), and they look right in a gym.

Plenty of worthy watches in your price range. Personal favorite (that I own) is the SKX007.

Graduation present from my parents. Quite snazzy, it is a tad busy! I've also got a leather strap and a 2 piece NATO on the way.
Probably going to pick up a SKX007 next. My pop has got a vintage 6309-7049 which is the same pretty much and I'm quite partial to Seikos as it is!

The Seiko SKX007 is one of the highest regarded under $200 mechanical watch on most watch enthusiast sites followed by the SARB035 if you don't mind spending a bit more.

The Seiko SKX007 is a very versatile watch. It has a proven track record, a pedigree that spans decades and meets all the requirements you stated above. I wear mine every day and love it. It's a little big on small wrists (some people get the SKX013 because it's smaller) but IMO it's the best bang for your buck and will last you 20+ years if you take care of it and get it services once or twice during that time. It will serve you well and you will be hard pressed to find another watch that comes close to it.

As you can see I'm a huge fan of this watch. I wasn't when I first started looking at watches but I use mine ever day, more than I use my cell phone. It's just great.

u/iStareAtButtholes · 5 pointsr/Watchexchange

Hey bro, not sure if you noticed this post earlier but a lot of folks jumped on it and got the SKX007 NEW for the same price (or less) than what you're asking for used with a damaged strap.

For $10 bucks more, I can get a new one from Amazon. Just a heads up.

u/Memeuchub · 5 pointsr/RepTime

At the 250 price point, you're not going to be hitting the acceptable level of reps - especially for Omega, Rolex, Tudor etc. You'll be getting a rep that fools most, but will probably have a poor bracelet with an unreliable Asian movement.

I'd suggest these Seikos:
Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
Option 4
Option 5

These are of my taste, of course - so you could look around yourself.

u/shokalion · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Out of genuine curiosity here what is it about that watch that makes it worth dropping two grand on? Preowned, at that.

I mean compared to something like this which is fairly similar in form and function? They're both quartz watches so realistically there's not going to be a whole lot of difference in their timekeeping ability either.

Forgive me I just look at those two side by side, and I can't see where the extra £1500 is going.

u/itisthumper · 5 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Frugal alternative: Seiko SKX007

lots of mods available to make it look more like a submariner

u/kare_kano · 4 pointsr/Watches

Nice diver for him would also have been my first idea. Consider the SKX007, it's a classic, can't-go-wrong-with-it option. You should be able to score a decent leather strap for $20-30.

Practical watch for a nurse would be a quartz with a precise mechanism and an analog face with an easily visible seconds hand. I also say quartz because they actually prefer the second hand to move in explicit jumps, makes it easier to count pulse and so on. It would also help if it's steel, preferably hypoalergenic, so it can be easily washed. Water resistance 100m would be nice, also sapphire glass so it's not easily scratched. Here's a starting point – unfortunately Amazon.com doesn't let you filter for glass and case material or WR, but you can check that on each page once you've picked something by looks. (Oh and yes it's a men's selection with sizes under 40mm, I'm sorry but I've always thought women's designs are crap.)

One choice which might cover both of them would be military/field matching designs (esp. since he's a vet). Bertucci makes some nice vintage designs, inspired from actual war time watches, with titanium cases and 100 WR. Check out their site for the full range of models, then look them up on sites like longislandwatch.com for lower prices.

u/TheDude8405 · 4 pointsr/Watches

I think you know what brand this sub loves... But not without reason! In that range you really have to look at Seiko. There are a few watches you could buy, the Sarb033 is at the top of the spectrum. However I personally own and love it and It's a beautiful watch with good bang per buck, you do get something for your money! If your dad is into divers there are a few options as well. Either the turtle or the diver icon of Seiko, the SKX. Both really good watches as well. I hope I could help you and your dad.

u/chrispscott · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

A dive watch sounds like it would be the way to go for you. They are not meant to take absue in water and just keep going. I have some pretty small wrists too but the 38-42mm range is usually a good place to start. I would check out Part 1 or if you want more specific models you can't go wrong with an Invicta 8926OB if you want to stay under $75, Seiko SKX007 or Orient Ray if you want to stay under $200. The Invicta is a bit smaller at 40mm while the Seiko and Orient are 42mm.

u/UpYourButtJobu · 3 pointsr/Watches

Sure. The Seiko SNK80x series is quite a popular inexpensive automatic. It's a little on the small side at 37mm, but it's a nice clean design with a decent Japanese-designed but Malaysian-made movement (hence the cost savings). Some say it's a little loud and not too accurate (+/-15 to +/-20 seconds per day is not unusual). But for the price, it's hard to argue that it's not a good value.

Going up in price but at or near $200 is the Seiko 007 series. This is a good value 42mm diver. You can get the rubber strap model to bring it under $200.

u/super_sheriff · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Might I suggest an SKX007? They're beautiful watches and they pay homage to the submariner, but don't come off as a carbon copy or a replica/fake. Might I also suggest getting the skx007 and a metal bracelet with some straps? He can swap out the straps to match outfits on the fly. Really convenient.

Its really tough to beat a Seiko in the price range you're shopping in. It pretty much comes down to picking what you like. If you want a watch that is automatic and VERY well made, check out the Seiko SKX007. Hard to beat!

If I were you, I'd buy two watches: a dress watch and a casual, rugged watch.

For $150, you can get the Orient Bambino. It's the signature affordable dress watch for it's reliability and style.

With the other $150, you could get a diver like the Orient Ray, the Seiko SKX007, or even a field watch like the SNZG15

u/Br0sideon · 2 pointsr/Watches

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get a few opinions about buying a SKX007K from the Amazon link below. This will be my first automatic watch, so my experience with them is only limited to YouTube at the moment. A bit of research has lead me to be a little hesitant about this purchase though, as there seem to be some people claiming the watches are not genuine or brand new. I am skeptic, as I do trust Amazon quite a bit and never had any problems with them of this nature. I would love to hear any opinions or suggestions you may have and thanks for your time.

u/SquigglesMcDeef · 2 pointsr/Watches

That one looks fine. Personally, I would go with the one that I suggested because it comes with a better strap than the one off Amazon, but I understand your parent's concern. If you would like a rubber strap, then you should check out this one.

At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference and you can't go wrong with any of these.

u/JaggedOne · 2 pointsr/EDC

OP said inexpensive. That is a $210 watch!

u/HectorTheOwl · 2 pointsr/Watches

Most Seamasters are considered divers. I love them as well, but are significantly out of my price range too. Seiko has a few nice divers, most popular being the SKX007, or the SNZH57. Both are great value for price.

Another route you could go is Steinhart. They make a lot of homage divers (some are pretty much straight up replicas of Rolex's), which some people dislike, but again, great value for price.

u/jaetran · 2 pointsr/Watches

Amazon currently has it for just under $200. Long Island Watch, another reputable site, has it for a little more at $219. eBay has some that are a little more cheaper than Amazon but they're coming from Singapore which may be subjected to custom/duty fees if you live elsewhere such as US/Canada or Europe.

This is my everyday watch, and after a year and a half it has been fantastic. Not to mention, the quality control of this watch has been above and beyond what I've experienced with more than one Swatch owned company.

Eh, I see that you wanted a light face, my bad. Still, if you like the look of the Seiko, I'd highly highly recommend it.

u/Schindog · 2 pointsr/Watchexchange

For sure, no worries. Any of these pique your interest? (It'd be awesome if I had a nice camera... That Symphony is much more beautiful in-person)

Seiko SKX007K

The ones on the left have a couple dings from working as a barista and/or camping, but the Symphony is damn near mint, as it tends to get worn with less heavy use.

u/Jamesatron · 2 pointsr/Watches

[UK] I recently learnt about the Seiko SKX007/009 a few weeks ago and have been lost in countless articles regarding how good value for money they seem to be.

I am looking for suggestions on where I can buy a new SKX007 from? I'm trying to decide on where to obtain one from, namely:

- Amazon.co.uk - £216

- Chrono24 - £220 / £250

- CreationWatches - £176 + ?? Tax / Import will likely LAND £200+

I have never bought a second hand watch but have considered eBay a few times. Would be nice to get it BNIB with proof of purchase.

u/travis_s · 2 pointsr/Watches

Model: [SKX013K2]

The Seiko SKX007 is widely considered one of the greatest values in the dive watch category. This article over at Hodinkee explains this much more eloquently than I could ever hope to. This watch has received plenty of love and attention on r/watches, and for good reason. For it's quality and value, you can't get much better than the SKX007. But what about those of you who prefer a watch with a smaller case?

Well have no fear friends, the 38mm SKX013 is made just for you. This is nearly identical to the 007 (same movement, with slightly different aesthetics). And so I was thrilled when my father recommended this to me after expressing interest in the 007 (he's a life-long watch collector who also owns an 013). Read this execllent review over at WUS that convinced me even further that the 013 was the right choice.

"But I'm not a fan of jubilee bracelets!" That's a valid concern - but I can tell you from experience that the jubilee bracelet is EXTREMELY comfortable. If you're in the anti-jubilee camp, the 007 and 013 are available with rubber straps as well. And if you like Pepsi bevels, check out the 009 and [015].

u/greatkio · 2 pointsr/Watches

I know that when you talk about expanding your budget, the thought of laying down more money can be pretty painful depending on your situation, and I would hate to encourage you go to beyond your means. That said, if you were willing to go up, here are the kinds of things you can think about, which are much better than what you're looking at now:

First, the Victorinox INOX, which seems like the perfect watch for what you're describing. I tried one of these on in a store the other day and they are fucking tough as shit. When I was there they just threw it at stuff. Hard. There are some intense videos of them being tested on YouTube. I'm probably gonna get one for my mountaineering uncle for Christmas. I really think this watch would suit your needs perfectly - it's got a solid military heritage.

The
Hamilton Khaki
is a popular field watch. I want the titanium version (much more expensive). You can find one for ~300, Amazon's not the cheapest place to buy.

If you are willing to come up to ~300, Seiko and Citizen have some pretty tough diver's watches in that price range. I'll second /u/JoCoLaRemix's suggestion for the Seiko Monster, which I think is hideous, but has a good reputation.

Happy hunting!

u/SgtKashim · 2 pointsr/scuba

I rather like wearing a watch, and decided to add a dive watch when I started diving. The first thing to decide is movement - battery, solar, or mechanical. For diving... I honestly think Solar is a great choice. No battery to replace, but also doesn't need service like mechanical. Citizen uses the "Eco-Drive" name for their solar, while Seiko just calls them "Seiko Solar". Seiko Kinetic is a similar thing - quartz watch with a movement based charging system - but they have a reputation for crapping out. The solar ones are basically bulletproof.

As you may know, if you want to dive a watch, simply getting something that says '200m water resist' isn't really enough. Watches that meet ISO6425 standards (which are specs for dive watches) will show 'Diver's 200m'. The proofing and testing is different, and the '200m/20atm' watches aren't necessarily dive ready. Wikipedia has a reasonable explanation of the testing differences. At the very least, you need a screw-down crown. Anything that says "Diver's 200m" on it will have that and be sufficiently reliable for diving work. Anything that says '300m' should be sufficient for at least basic diving... anything lower you're just going to have to ask the watch community about that particular watch specifically.

So - all that aside. Recommendations based on the digging I did while I was shopping. I ended up with an Orange Seiko Solar Diver. The Citizen Promaster divers are nice as well.

The 'Entry Level' seems to be this Casio. It's battery powered, but should last a long long time. It doesn't say Divers 200, but they have a reputation for lasting.

Cheap end of mechanical, the Vostok Amphibia. It's a completely different concept than the more traditional dive watch - uses soft seals and pressure to seal itself, rather than a hardened case. 'Automatic' or 'Self-Winding' mechanical, but it has a bi-directional bezel, meaning you can't really use the bezel for timing like you can on a true 'Dive Watch'. You can get em with a little scuba man on them, though. There's a bunch of different style Vostoks, but they're all functionally the same. Good watches.

Moving up in price a bit, Seiko makes some very nice mechanical dive watches. There's the SKX007, the SKX009, the 'Monster' watches (Available in Black, White and Orange), and some of my favorite looks - the Blue Lagoon and Turtle.

If you want to throw stupid money at the problem, my buddy has one of these Marathon watches which he loves dearly. They're one of the few divers you can get with actual radioactive tubes, so you don't have to charge the lume hands up in the sun.

u/renholder · 2 pointsr/Spearfishing

I love my Seiko SKX007K. The rubber strap is super comfortable and the offset nob doesn't bang into the top of my hand when I'm working.

u/satanicwaffles · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

If you get a good, all-purpose watch, such as the Seiko SKX007 or SNZG013 it is all in the band. Throw it on a NATO or rubber strap for a casual, comfortable look. Put it on a bracelet for a sportier look that can also pass for formal.

The strap can adjust the look, but it can't totally change it. The SKX007 will never be a dress watch. You can't make the Seiko Orange Monster look formal, and you can't make the Orient Bambino look sporty.

u/Devvils · 2 pointsr/Watches

I've used Seiko 5 for swimming, but if you need something more robust the go for a dive watch.

Look for "DIVER'S 200M" and a screw down crown. They are better built than Seiko 5.

personally I love the seiko 5. a reliable watch for an affordable price. how many of these do you need? if your willing to go just a hair more than the 200 dollar mark (and if you look around you could probably find them for right at 200) you could get skx007's which is an automatic diver. its 235 on amazon, you may be able to find it for a little less. the 5 is a really solid watch though...

u/LogicWavelength · 1 pointr/Watches

The first one linked... The Seiko 5... That is going to be a sturdy, reliable watch. You are not looking for what Seiko is traditionally know for and your choices are on the fringe of Seikos products. If you "want to add a Seiko" to your collection, this is the one to get. Seiko is not known for their black watches.

Honestly though, This is what I would buy for an all-black watch. It has a polycarbonate case, which means scratches won't show silver metal underneath since it is a black material. Additionally, it has tritium gas tubes for its lume and a 200m water resistance.

u/1iggy2 · 1 pointr/Watches

The Seiko diver is a nice one. I know they sell it other places I'm going to try to find an Amazon link.

Edit: Way better cost on Amazon.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Watches

Ahh I see. Thanks.

Here's a black SKX. There are multiple movements and other color schemes available as well, unfortunately I'm not too knowledgable on this watch, but I'm certain there are many people here that are.

u/Medium_Well · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

As others have suggested, the Seiko SKX007 is a great choice. It's built like a little tank without being oversized. You sacrifice some slimness, but I'm guessing durability is more your concern, and the Seiko definitely has that. Diver rated to 200m, highly legible in most situations, and a powerful lume that will keep the watch illuminated in the dark after being in sunlight for a prolonged period of time. Seiko is also known for their offset crown at the 4 o'clock position, which prevents "wrist bite" (the crown digging into the back of your hand over time), which I think would be a good consideration for activities like kayaking or fishing.

The other benefit is that Seiko is so ubiquitous (and the watch itself so affordable) that aftermarket straps or replacement parts are easily found and relatively cheap. But you can find it for ~$200 online and it comes with a rubber strap. Seriously, it's meant as an outdoors watch.

u/Sohmdg · 1 pointr/Watches

I do not know the conversion rate to USD, but I would recommend a Seioko SKX007K. If the Submariner is the quintessential diver for the rich, then the SKX007K is the quintessential one for common folk. Some come with a rubber strap that I recommend changing, however it is very comfortable, you just might not like the look of it.

If you follow this sub-reddit, I think you'll notice a trend of what is considered good and nice.

Most people here will recommend an automatic over a quartz, but quartz has it's place for certain applications. I actually prefer hand wound mechanical watches over the other two.

For formal, most people will tell you to look at Seiko Presage line to start your watch obsession.

https://www.longislandwatch.com/Seiko_SARB065_Watch_p/sarb065.htm

Other choices are usually from Orient, Tissot, Tissel etc.

For everyday diver, Seiko SKX007/SKX009/SKX013 based on your wrist size

https://smile.amazon.com/Seiko-Automatic-Analogue-Rubber-SKX007K/dp/B000B5MI3Q?sa-no-redirect=1

For a tool watch, Hamilton Khaki line is very popular.

For a first nice but really inexpensive, Casio Duro.

Check the sidebar for FAQ, lot of good info there.

Now, that is the common recommendations. If your taste leans more to bling, there are plenty to choose from - heck you can get a Rolex with a diamond bezel, but those don't get too much screen time around here.

I think that the BEST value at the entry level for watches is the Seiko SKX Diver and an aftermarket Super Oyster Bracelet.

It will cost closer to $300 all in, but you're getting a more durable, water resistant, and much cooler watch.

I like the Seiko Alpinist better on leather, but it will cost a little more and you will need to replace the leather straps pretty quickly if you are wearing it everyday.

I have a JLC Grande Date and a Breitling Navitimer on leather. They are some of the best leather straps available, but they still wear out fast. I know you say you want a leather strap, but I'd strongly recommend a steel bracelet like the one I linked if you want something nice that will last.

YES! Be careful for a lot of things with vintage watches.

If you go vintage, you will want to make sure it is the correct (original) watch you think you are getting. This is difficult sometimes since they don't always have the original box or paperwork (In which case you need to have people who are experts let you know if it is original. Can be a PITB). There are some cool vintage watches in your price range, but vintage watches may need a service (cleaning, oiling, gasket change) done to them before they should be worn.

Here's 3 routes you could go that I think would work:

  1. Ask him what he wants. If you don't need it to be a surprise, then ask him what's next on his list (he might have) and buy it for him. If it is new and in your price range, that is great! If it is vintage, you might be able to buy the whole thing and get it serviced for $600 too! If it is pricier than your budget allows, maybe split it, contribute the $600, or use the $600 to pay for part of it and a service (if the watch is not bought new and needs it).

  2. If you want it to be more of a surprise, then ask him what style he likes or wants and buy a new watch within your budget in that style. Too many people on here are throwing around great watches, but none of them know what style your son likes or wants next in a watch. Check with him or get a picture/list of his exact collection and we might be able to make a guess.

  3. Buy him 3 SKX007s. You will assert yourself as the alpha parent, and he will love you forever.

    Don't do #3 though. Seriously. It's a bad joke.

EDIT: Just saw the collection. I have no idea what he would want next. I would talk to him and ask now that you have more of an interest in watches yourself. He doesn't have a diver, but that might not be his style (so maybe, as long as he isn't against the diver style). He has a lot of black and stainless. I like that combo myself, but he might want to change it up. He might even want a nicer beater like a G-shock which would be great since many fall into your budget. I would talk to him and listen to what he likes or wants next if it is something specific or a certain style in particular.

EDIT 2: Suggesting talking to him since, if he is like me, he may have certain things about watch design he can't stand and would never want on a watch, but then see something that breaks his rule. We are a weird creature, people. Can't explain why we like what we like and don't what we don't sometimes. I'm sure he'll be happy his mother is taking an interest in his interests and cares enough to do this for a gift! All the best!

If I had to take one I'd take the Black/Green one. The yellow version isn't as nice as this one I think. But if I had another opinion to give, and lucky for you I do (haha), I wouldn't take this watch at all and instead would get an SKX.

Hey, I have a perfect watch for you. I too am college student myself and I had same budget and I just bought one yesterday. It's a swiss military watch that is authentic swiss made, 200m waterproof, and chronograph.
It's not as simple as your sketch but it's much better and cooler for the price. Not like pseudo "swiss" watches out there.

If you didn't like that it's a quartz, I'd recommend this Seiko or Casio Automatic

Another one I just thought of that's CLOSEST to your sketch is this one. But it's a quartz

It's mostly a rule, but here is the reasoning:

A) It's not something you will be able to pass down to your children or grandchildren. They wouldn't want it if did make it that long. It will be such an old technology that it wont interface with anything they might have. It's would be like your dad giving you a bunch of 8-tracks.

B) It's made of plastic and will get scratched and eventually destroyed. It wont even make it through your lifetime, which means you are plopping down $300 (give or take) on something that will last 3 years... maybe 4 if you are lucky. Lets be generous and say it loses about $50 in value each year before you have to replace/upgrade it. That's a lot of diminished value. A bottom of the line respected mechanical watch can last you 10 years easy, and a lifetime if you take care of it. You can get it for $140.

C) Watches have souls. Listen to [John Meyer talk] (http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/video-talking-watches-with-john-mayer) about his watches. The all-time top post on /r/Watches has meaning. Its 70 years in the making. A watch from a company not yet in the lexicon of culture passed on from a man to his heirs. My bet is that he never heard his Great-Grandfathers voice, but they both heard the ticking of that watch on their wrist.

D) As far as fashion goes... all I see here is the 5th all time top-post

E) Would you rather wear this or this

F) I would never hide a pebble in my ass.

This watch is technically water resistant to 30 meters. Personally I would suggest just taking it off when you need to put your hands in salt water, or not wearing it to work. If you want a do-all watch you could get a diver like the Seiko SNK007: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B5MI3Q

That one will have no problem with submersion in fish tanks, but it's also twice your budget and sized a little larger at 42mm.

Alternatively you could get something digital like this as a beater - classic in its own way: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GAYQKY

First thing that came to mind for me is the SRP27x models. I don't think they're made anymore, but you can find them on eBay.

Of course, the diver route is also available. The 007 is a great choice in this range, and if you prefer a metal band there are lots of options out there.

If you're willing to go used, I can't recommend the SBDC001 Sumo enough. This is my daily wear and it's a great watch. New, it'll be a bit beyond your budget, but you can likely find a used one in your price range. Here's a snap of it next to a 007 for a size reference.

u/Watches-n-warriors · 1 pointr/Watches

It looks like it is from 2001 or 2011, so be careful as it will have additional wear. Granted there are stories of Seikos going decades without any service, but it is something to be aware of. I would pony up the extra money and get a new SKX with a bracelet. Here is an SKX009 for $180 with bracelet.

EDIT: And an SKX007 with a band for less than $170.

I don't know what your looking at. Here is the first hit on google and I know they can be found for less. Also, it's one of the bet selling watch designs out there, clearly some people think it looks good.
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5MI3Q

What do YOU think looks good?

u/caspersauer · 0 pointsr/Watches

I'm sure some will laugh at this suggestion, since this is recommended by someone no matter the question, but have you looked at the [SKX007] (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX007K-Divers-Automatic-Watch/dp/B000B5MI3Q)?

I love minimalist watches and also love this dive watch. It doesn't hit all of your buttons, but it is reasonably rugged and good for getting wet. And, somewhat minimalist in design. There are a variety of (water-friendly) straps and bracelets available for it. And... there are lots of folks who would help you modify it: [a sterile black dial] (http://www.dagazwatch.com/apps/webstore/products/show/5239183), [a plain black bezel insert] (http://www.dagazwatch.com/apps/webstore/products/show/47551), [even some more minimalist hands] (http://www.dagazwatch.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3415547).

I don't know anything about [these guys] (https://www.artificehoroworks.com/shop/stealth/), but they advertise a "stealth SXK007" that's admittedly out of your price range (but well below the Nomos).

Another out of the box minimalist option: [Casio black-on-black G-Shock] (https://www.amazon.com/Casio-DW5600MS-1CR-G-Force-Military-Concept/dp/B001QFYDEC/). You're unlikely to find a more rugged waterproof watch.

u/diamondsinthesky23 · 0 pointsr/Watches

Look at Seiko 5's. There's infinite choice and they are all reliable, waterproof and can go without service for 5-10 years easily.

If you swim that often though, I would consider looking into 'Divers'. (Usually more waterproof).
Seiko has some great divers as well.

If you want an automatic watch (mechanical winding through kinetic energy), there's the Seiko SKX007
If you want a quartz watch (battery-powered), there's the very cheap but really good Casio MDV106-1AV

If you don't care about the chronograph functions of the watch and just want something that looks more or less like that Shinola, your best bet is to buy a Seiko SKX007 and then modify the bezel insert, which is actually really easy to do. The Seiko SKX007 is one of the most iconic and cleanly designed watches ever made. It wears small and compact on the wrist compared to a lot of monstrously large watches from fashion brands, and it is an absolute tank that you can wear for years and years like an old friend. You can remove the rubber strap and outfit it with a classy NATO strap or even leather and it looks great as well. And since it's a dive watch, you can wear it swimming without a care in the world.

The bezel modification is easy - Buy this part from Dagaz and then with a hairdryer, heat up the black bezel insert that's on the watch. With a pair of thin pliers (i used my leatherman) the bezel should just come off and leave most of the glue still there. In any case the new ring will have paper you can peel off to reveal glue, and you just stick that sucker on there. It's super easy. Took me five minutes, and the original black ring is still usable.

For bonus points, go buy a double-domed crystal from CT Horology and swap it out. That will actually require a watchmaker/repair shop to do it for you. The place I went to charged me 25 dollars. You have no idea how much nicer it improves the look. The original flat crystal is fine, functional, looks great, but the domed sapphire is a whole new level, and doesn't impact the water resistance of the watch (if installed correctly).

The price of the Seiko, the bezel insert, the crystal, and the installation of same, is all under $400, and it really doesn't take any work to get it to look that way.

If you care about the chronograph functions of the watch, then I dunno. That green/black look is hard to come by. Even on the Rolex GMT Hulk there isn't a chrono.
