I like automatic watches. I've also got a wife, child, and house to pay for. I also love to beat the shit out of my stuff because it just sort of happens.


Enter the SNK803. Automatic. Tough. Most importantly, easily replaced if I destroy it. But, I don't like the matte finish of the case. I DID have a dremel tool. Do I have an autozone? Yes I do. Do they carry mother's mag & aluminum polish? Every day. So I polished it up. Not mirror, a shiny satin finish. But now I need a quality strap. So I ordered a John Allen Woodward Alligator for $1,100...NO! What goes best with a satin finish and a beige face? Simple leather! This is a Ritche Genuine Leather NATO strap for a timex weekender. Happens to come in 18mm. And you know it's high quality leather. How? Says so. Genuine is right in the name. Only the best straps come WITH a tool to remove the pins.


Now I've got a watch that looks great, keeps great time, is a tiny mechanical wonder, and looks just as good at work as it does hiking. With a grand total of maybe $60 and an hour of work in it.

There are so many great options under $500! As you noted, Swiss Made is pretty much out of the question at this price point, but that's okay. The brands that you are mainly going to be looking at here are the Japanese brands: Seiko and Orient. Here are my favorites from cheapest to most expensive, including links to where you can buy them.

1. In my opinion, the absolute best automatic watch to start out with -- especially if you're not sure if you'll be collecting watches long term -- is a Seiko 5 ($55). With its solid automatic movement and exhibition caseback, it's an incredible value for the price. Swap in a brown leather strap and you have a very attractive watch for under $80 total.
   
   
2. Of course you already know that the Orient Bambino V2 is another great option -- very similar to the Seiko 5 but a bit less casual and more high end in appearance. Retail on this one is $300, but it can usually be had for below $200. Long Island Watch had it on sale for $117 very recently but unfortunately it is now sold out.
   
   
3. If you want a tool watch, something a little bit more rugged, definitely go for an Orient Ray II ($185) or a Seiko SKX007 ($199 - bracelet version linked but also available on a black rubber strap). I personally own both of those watches and they are both awesome.

If you don't like either of these, the style you're looking for is a German Pilot. They typically have black or cream faces anyway (some white as well), but it shouldn't be too hard to find as Chinese/Japanese watch companies are obsessed with knocking them off (Parnis, etc.)

Aeromatic makes Chinese pilot watches in this style. They have a quartz version for $130 and an automatic model for $200.
Seiko makes quality and affordable automatic watches. The styling is similar on this model, but this Seiko is smaller than the model you linked to.
Orient is my favorite option for quality, style, and affordability. At the moment it is out of stock with most retailers though.

Don't knock metal bands before you've tried them! Some are super comfortable, but there are some that should go to a scrap reclaimer immediately.

As JHG722 suggested, the SNK809 is a great watch at a great price right now ($40.99 on Amazon). Not sure how long it'll be that price before it jumps back up to ~$55. Unfortunately, only the black 809 seems to be on sale. The blue SNK807 and cream SNK803 are going for their regular price. These would be my go-to suggestion for an automatic within your price range.

Some of the other budget brands like Orient usually go for right above your upper limit at around $130+, except this black dial Orient Symphony at ~$92, for some reason. It is a bit more formal looking than the Seiko 5s, though that might fit your conservative style requirement.

You could pair the SNKs with a Hadley-Roma strap, also on Amazon, for an extra $15-25 or even splurge a bit for a Hirsch (again, can be found on Amazon), for around $40-50 and still hit your budget. I only mention Amazon so much because you should be able to get the free shipping, which can save you anywhere from $5-15 depending on where else you might buy from. Remember to get an 18mm strap if you go with the SNK.

Unfortunately, the lower end Seikos don't really have great nighttime visibility compared to their divers like the SKXs. Neither does the Symphony, which, on the dressier side, lacks a lume altogether. I'm not sure about the lume on the MDV106, but it should be alright, given it's a dive watch.

I would probably jump on that SNK809 if I were you, but my dial color preference goes from black to blue to white.

Here's mine. I took the strap off and have like 4 NATO straps I'll change depending on mood/outfit.

A much better option is the Seiko 5 SNK80XK2 series. It's a quality automatic that looks almost identical to this, and still comes in at a very affordable price. Available in Beige, Green, Blue, and Black.

Id recommend the Seiko SNK series if you're looking for a watch in the $50 price range, but certainly cant go wrong with a weekender or fairfield.

The Seiko SNK is probably the watch that Metcarfre was talking about. It comes in black, blue, green, and beige - no white AFAIK. You can put a pass-thru or NATO strap on most leather band watches, just remove the existing band and put the spring bars back in. It may be difficult or impossible on steel bracelet watches.

What do you mean by a step above in thinness? You want something thinner or thicker? The Weekender is 10mm thick and the Seiko is 13mm thick about the same at 10.5mm thick. Skagen or Swatch are probably your best bet for a cheap thin watch.

Try the orient yellow mako it's $130 The mako xl has a nice green bezel/black dial combo that is colorful yet tasteful but ut's $180. The seiko snk809 also comes in green blue and biege. If you don't care about quality look at the tendence rainbow collection I'll link all this later when I get access to a computer rater than my ipod

It's not my place to get in on your relationship, but I would recommend buying her something based on what she likes. My SO wore an awfully hideous Baby-G until I took her shopping and we found a look she liked.

That said, I have no idea of Seiko makes a smaller women's version of that watch, and I don't know what specifically about it you like, but Citizen has some nice watches in that price range for women. This one is kind of similar. The SNK809 is also so small that there's no reason you couldn't just get it for her and put it on a more "feminine" strap. This one's vaguely ladylike, I guess.

I purchased this watch over a year ago, and it's still going strong. The retail price is over 100, but I believe it can be had on sale fairly easily if you look around.

It's an automatic, and I've seen some complaints about a loud tick, but that's not been the case at all for me. It's certainly more quiet than the Weekender by Timex, which may also interest you. My only complaint about the Rodina was that the strap it came with was terrible quality, which is unsurprising at the price point. I just purchased an assortment of NATO straps, including one leather, that I switch out frequently.

Another option, outside of the Timex, is this Seiko. It's another automatic, and it's regarded as one of the more reliable budget watches. Seiko has several other watches in the 50-150 price range you may be interested in, so I'd shop around for one that fits your criteria.

You have some options, but if I were you, I'd make my main focus reliability. A lot of cheap watches will stop working fairly quickly, and after that, it doesn't matter how pretty it is. It's now your most handsome paperweight. Stay away from brands like Invicta. If it looks like a Rolex but costs less than a trip to Olive Garden, it's probably trash.

in addition to the other suggestions, try getting some colored perlon bands. the cream face goes well with so many. I have this S5 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000G6R7B8 and pair it with a blue, brown, or green band as I like. it takes about 15 seconds to slide the watch off one band and on to another.

Last but not least another Orient, I've agonized over which watch to get that has that retro 50's flair that i love but it came down to the tissot visodate and the Orient bambino in the end I went with Orient because when I saw the tissot in person at a watch shop it just didnt look like a 500 dollar watch to me the band especially looked cheap and plasticky :(, I've seen the bambino in person too and i was honostly floored by the quality of it. I dont think the Orient logo goes well with the 50's style but I'm willing to overlook it. I think eventually I'll get a Hamilton Jazzmaster of some kind but for now I'll settle for the Orient.

Just bought a Seiko SNK803 with a beige dial. Not a fan of the strap, so I'm buying new ones. Debating which one of these leather straps I should buy:

Something like this would fit your aesthetic well, I think. A Timex Weekender would be a cheaper option that would look pretty good, too.

As a frequenter at r/watches and a lover of finer watches, I'd still have to say yes, absolutely. The design is immaculate. You're not giving off a sense of esteem or prestige; rather, you're giving off a sense of sensibility. Several factors really play into effect: 1) the price is modest and not too cheap as to affect the build quality, 2) the military design paired with the Nato strap adds a durable and sensible look, 3) the Nato strap in itself adds comfort and customization options...giving the wearer to change for the seasons or for individual outfits, and 4) it is a great introductory watch for most occasions with the exception of formal ones.

Should you want to invest more in a watch (say $50 - $100), then I'd start recommending automatic watches to add flavor. Add a little more to your budget and you can pick yourself a much more beautiful, prestigious watch (http://www.christopherward-usa.com/men/view-all-mens/c5-bb70-awt.html). Of course, these are all military themed watches.

I think the beige face of the SNK803 makes it the most versatile, especially with the Hadley Roma chestnut band (the watch is misidentified as the SNK809 in the pic descriptions) which is also on amazon.

Seiko 5s are great watches around 50-60 bucks but they are very casual so I'm not sure what look you are looking for. They are all stainless steel and not gold though but come in black, green, blue, and biege dials.

As the other poster said Timex is another good option and there's a wide variety of Timex from casual to dressy enough for that price range. I have the Expedition Scout and like it. They don't have gold either but some of the faces are yellow/gold print

Surprised to see that Timex isn't getting more love. They make really solid pieces for a pretty affordable price - you can find their Weekender and Expedition lines for under $30 (and great cream dial options), either of which could be worked into business casual. I have a Fairfield Chrono that is one of my favorites for business casual outfits.

Another fan favorite is the Seiko SNK8 line (with black and cream options) - these are automatics instead of battery-powered which is fun (especially with the clear case back to see the movement), but you have to reset the time if you don't wear them every day. Seiko has all sorts of decent options under $100 too.

Orient (a Seiko subsidiary) is well known for being a quality entry-level brand. If you prefer diver style watches, the Mako/Ray automatic divers are stellar, and the ridiculous amount of Bambino models are fantastic dress watches that can easily be dressed down.

If you're looking to take the one quality watch versus several cheaper ones, I can't say enough good things about the Hamilton Khaki Field. It's pricier (~$450) but it fits with almost anything (casual, business casual, even masquerades as a dress watch at times) and I pretty much wear it almost exclusively these days. Of course, if you're willing to spend $500+, there are a dizzying amount of options out there.

Two other notes: don't worry too much about the strap color. Most default straps are low-quality and you can easily replace it with anything you want (spring bar tools are like $5). Second, I think the real issue most folks have with fashion watches is that they're just straight up overpriced (aka it's a $10 watch sold for $100+) and you can usually find off-brand versions of most everything on Ali Express. That said, if you really like a certain watch, forget the haters and just buy it - it's going on your wrist, not theirs.

Mougin & Piquard is a dead brand who's name has been resurrected by J. Crew. The movement is probably a $5 Japanese quartz. I'm not making this up.

I would go for the Seiko. A quality automatic (mechanical that winds itself) in-house movement from a respected maker at a quarter of the price.

At first glance, a very close match would be a similar watch combination I posted here.

The combination I would recommend (as seen from my thread) would be this Seiko 5 and this strap, but judging from the responses from the thread a 37mm watch may seem a bit small, especially when compared to that 41mm you're linking to.

The watch at the top of my list for the past couple of years has been this Omega 42mm Planet Ocean, but I'm concerned that it may soon be updated with the new movement that the Aqua Terra line has been updated with.

Many people have had them for ten to twenty years without issue, but I believe Amazon offers at least a two (?) year warranty on their watches. I've had this, and really enjoyed it. You will almost certainly want to get a different strap for it, maybe a NATO, as the one it comes with is pretty scratchy.

I have a Seiko 5 Sport this one are there replacement saphire crystals available for this model. I know it ships with mineral glass, and I have managed to scuff mine quite badly.

I freaked out, but admittedly wasn't too concerned because I plan on moving on up to a Christopher Ward this month.

I'm not sure about the movement, but it's this beige SNK803.
Most days it's about +3 seconds, but on very active days I've seen it go up to +15 seconds, but that's happened only a handful of times that I've seen. It's a good little watch that I've had for almost a year now. Fits pretty well on my 6.75" wrist too.

Edit: Should add that it was +15 seconds when I wore it on an active day because the watch had died sometime before and I was attempting to provide it with a good amount of charge.

My new watch should get here next week.

Hey r/watches, I'm getting married soon and am looking to get each of my groomsmen a tasteful Seiko SNK803 (https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK803-Automatic-Watch-Canvas/dp/B000G6R7B8). This means I'm looking to buy ~7 identical watches in bulk, which I get the sense is a fairly uncommon situation. Should I just pull the trigger and buy them all from Amazon, should I try to see if my local watch store should give me a discount for ordering so many watches at once, or should I be looking to find deals on other sites online that may specialize in this kind of thing? I'm curious how a more watch-savvy person than me might go about this.

I really am glad to have this, it was this watch (in a different color) that sparked my interest in watches, and I'm glad I get to have the pleasure of owning this piece. I saw this a few months ago, which as well piqued my interest in this sub, and the wonderful world of watchmaking. After this I've been interested in the Seiko 5 SNK793 as a first automatic watch, something I can wear that's a bit dressier.

On a side note, it also seems to have gotten my mother interested, as right after I showed her the Seiko I'll be ordering, she went and ordered herself a Seiko 5 SNK803. So it's nice to pass on the interest.

Cheap seiko automatic... mine has been fairly accurate with in a min each week. And is not worth crying over if something happens to it. Especially with theft being the main concern.

Fairly tough construction of the watch... I am not nice to mine and wear it daily and it's been going strong for years (give or take a few dings and scratches)

I've heard good things about Seiko. I've had my eye on this one for a while, but for $28 i might cave and get the weekender.

What about this one (Seiko Automatic)? It's below my budget (which is never a bad thing) so I could possibly buy a second strap for it to dress up.

Highly praised, comes in multiple colors, and ofter goes down to around $45. Definitely needs a better strap, but throw it on a nice Nato or leather strap and it's a great budget watch.

Since you liked the J.Crew one, you could buy a Seiko 5. I thought it was one at first. Beige, Blue, Black etc.

You could also get a leather strap to it, like this (thread).

Thank you for your input! Yes I was indeed misguided... I really liked you suggestion of the Timex Fairfield, but I have the impression it'll a tad big with 41mm, but I really appreciated the idea of buy a separate band, it open the options quite a lot. I would like to, be within $200CAD overall:

• Clean design, possibly minimalist
  
• White/Clear face
  
• Ideally between 36 and 38mm
  
• Leather strap (I may purchase separate leather bands if needed)

  How do I which bands will fit?

I prefer the T2N947 as a dress watch, but I can't find much review for it online minus linkbacks to Amazon. I don't like the face of the T49963 the watch hands combined with the thick numbers and minute/hour marks is pretty overbearing.

Something like the Sieko SNK803K2 but with a leather watch strap would look better as an alternative to the Timex T49963.

Do you mean this watch? It's an automatic, so that might be a good choice since the Weekender is a quartz. You would have one of each. Seiko is a solid reputable brand name.

Personally I would not choose that color scheme. The light hands against a light face may make the watch difficult to see, especially in low light. I would choose one with a darker face. But that's just me, your eyes are probably sharper than mine. Also keep in mind this watch has a different lug length than the Weekender, so straps will NOT be interchangeable between the two watches.

I think the Seiko 5 is the best option at that price point, but it doesn't meet the size or bracelet requirements... Maybe an Invicta Pro Diver? Invicta generally gets a bad rap around here and most of their designs are garish, but the Pro Diver isn't one of them. An Invicta 8928 was the watch that was my gateway drug to the world of watches, so maybe I'm a little biased.

Most "minimal" quartz watches have <10 USD movements in them so what you are paying for is fashion. These are the MVMT, Daniel Wellington, Nixon, Fossil, ect. You can buy them if you like the way they look, there is nothing wrong with that, but know they are built fairly cheaply and marked up to +$100 for no reason other than fashion. You can checkout DHGate and buy a fake DW watch for $7-12 from China that will be identical in quality to the actual DW watch, and could potentially even come from the same supplier! (not recommending, just commenting)

It really depends on what styles you like and how much you want to spend.

Watches I would recommend that are in my opinion minimal:

Casio Men's A158WA-1DF.
Its not super aesthetically minimal, but its ultra cheap, I think it is relatively stylish, impeccably reliable, easy to read, good features (light, alarm, stopwatch, long battery life). This watch got me through a year aboard a Nuclear Submarine and served me well as an alarm clock, stop watch, and time keeper. It dresses up and down very easily, and I wore it to dinner in foreign ports as well as in the engine room taking logs on equipment. I still have it in my rotation. At 33mm thick, with an 18mm band that tapers, this watch has a very low profile, minimal wrist presence. For 12 bucks you cant not want one.


Junkers Bauhaus
Much more expensive, especially for an entry level piece, but very well made. Mechanical, Japanese movement, built in Germany, certain to impress watch enthusiasts and normies alike. Its automatic, meaning it does not have a battery, and a mechanism winds the watch up due to the movement of your wrist throughout the day. This also means that if you dont wear it for a few days it can stop running, but all you need to do is give it a shake and set it again to get it going. There are some quarts models by Junkers that are cheaper, also even some models with Automatic Swiss movements, worth taking a look. Some cool features this watch has are the power meter, so know by how much the movement is wound as well as ability to perform as a 24hr watch for military time. Easily made a dress watch but good as an everyday casual watch as well. 41mm case, so it will wear very modern (ie large).

Sieko 5
This watch is not as minimal in the aesthetic sense, ie the face has more than just tick marks at each hour, and it has both day and date functions. It is another automatic, and I will argue that it is still pretty minimal. At ~50-60USD is is a perfect entry level choice for a first automatic/mechanical watch, and comes in several colors. Well made for the price. At 37mm it wears much smaller than most popular fashion watches (one of the reasons I recommend it as a minimal watch). It will suit you in both casual and fomal settings, and will appeal to both watch nerds and every day people. Not gaudy or pretentious like a Swiss made, gold piece, but it has some character and soul. I would recommend if you buy this watch to also pick up a band, as the one supplied from Sieko is uncomfortable and unattractive in my opinion. The watch will do well on a Nato band, or a light tan leather band (check out the amazon reviews user photos)


Casio Men's MQ24-7E
Another Casio, not as versatile since it is very casual, but undeniably minimal. Very similar to the watch worn by the Pope. If you want ultra cheap, reliable, and analog this is a good choice.
