MVMT watches are well known for being low quality "fashion" watches. These fashion brands are usually aimed at a younger audience so it makes sense they advertise on podcasts. In my eyes they aren't even worth the ~$100 price point. Sure they'll last a while, but so has my 10 year old Timex I got for 20 bucks, or some dollar store one I got as a kid.

 


If you are actually looking for a quality ~$100 watch, look at Seiko, Citizen or Orient. /r/watches is a very good place to learn, and you might find, like countless other beginners, that the Seiko SNK-809 is for you (my first "good" watch was the SNK-807), which is $50-$70 and a real mechanical automatic ("perpetual" for those of you across the pond) movement. Anything from Seiko 5 range is an incredible starter automatic watch.

 

Do some research if an automatic movement vs quartz movement is right for you (quartz is the basic battery operated watch that the "guts" can be found in watches ranging from $500 Movados to dollar store watches). I REALLY like seeing how things work so I really appreciate the mechanics behind an automatic watch. The downside to them is that they aren't as accurate as quartz (a normal range of inaccuracy is like +-10 seconds a day). But you'll never have to change a battery if that is any consolation. If that puts you off, keep in mind that a $10,000 Rolex has an automatic movement good for +- 5 seconds per day. And as a final PSA, stay away from Invicta. Their automatic movements, cheap pricing, and flashy looks may look enticing, but quality control is horrendous. Just as with any potential purchase, do some research on a watch you think looks promising. Give the model name a search on google or /r/watches and try to find a consensus.

 

For those of you who have been thinking they want a watch but haven't started exploring styles (which is the demographic companies like MVMT pander to with their styles) here is the classic "diver" style watch with the Rolex Submariner. A cheaper automatic dive watch I've been wanting for a LONG time is the Seiko SKX007, which obviously pays homage to the Sub, but is about $5800 cheaper. I'd replace the bracelet with something better than what is there though. Maybe I'll get it after college...

Another well loved cheap diver is from Orient, the Mako, though I prefer its big brother, the Ray, even though that is even closer looking to the Submariner.

The absolute best in budget vs quality in a dive watch is the ~$40 Casio MDV-106. You can get a decent 22 mm steel bracelet for almost the price of the watch and it will look fantastic if that is your preference. I've borrowed my brother's a few times and the thing feels like quality and has been put to the test plenty of times to prove itself as a real dive watch. He goes swimming, hiking, plays sports with it, drops it on concrete, etc. Rugged yet elegant looking. Good size too. Highly recommended first diver or first watch!

If you are looking for a real dress watch with "minimalist design" that doesn't look tacky like MVMT's (sorry, just my opinion), there are plenty in the Seiko 5 line like I said, or the lovely Orient Bambino.

 

Came back to say that if you don't really know if you want a watch, don't think you need to spend $100 on your first. Who knows, you might not like how it feels or looks on you or whatever. For the absolute cheapest of cheap, get yourself a Timex or Casio quartz watch. These brands are well renowned for their reliability. This way you'll end up spending only $15-20 on a watch that will last and work forever (obviously with battery changes along the way).

When I was in high school, my dad purchased a decent quality Rolex Submariner knockoff. I loved that watch and its shape. After High School, I became a plumber and HVAC tech and stopped wearing watches or any jewellery(I still don't wear a wedding band, someone in my family had their finger degloved at a construction site). Last year I decided to go back to school to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. Over the summer I was helping my parents finish remodelling their kitchen, and I mentioned that I should get a watch. My dad ended up giving my a Seiko 5 with a green canvas strap and later as a gift sent my a Bewell Wooden watch (I am a hobby woodworker). The shape of that Bewell reminded me of that Rolex Submariner and I started thinking about it again. A couple of months ago I subscribed to this subreddit and started seeing all of the great watches that you guys share, and I started to get the itch to get a good quality nice looking watch. I kept seeing the Seiko SKX007 popping up and started doing some research on it. This evening it showed up, and my first impressions are nothing but good. Thank you r/Watches for leading me to this watch.

It's 5 bucks over, but I love the Seiko 5. Very nice and stylish in my opinion.

It seems to go good with almost any outfit (except for maybe a suit) especially when you put a leather strap on it. Also, it has Seiko's widely used and dependable 7s26 automatic movement.

Here's mine with a leather strap bought at Sears for $20 or so.

Most watches are only offered in one size, but some are smaller than others. I have 5.75" wrists and my current cheap/casual watches are the Timex Weekender (on me | at Amazon), Casio A158W-1 (on me | at Amazon), and RAM Rugged Field Watch (on me | at Amazon). Also good is this Seiko 5, but I don't own one right now. Anyway, I have no idea what your desired style or budget is, but hopefully those suggestions and photos are of some use.

EDIT: Also, if you're looking for NATO straps, check out Crown and Buckle. Their new strap design has holes cut for people with really small wrists. Even with my tiny wrists, I've still got two holes left.

I've always been a little hooked on watches, but I only recently started grasping what made some watches worthwhile, and others, well, not so much. In the case of this Seiko (SNK805), I'd been searching for something like it for a while. I'd never owned an automatic, and it was proving pretty hard to find one that wasn't at least several hundreds dollars. I know it's nothing special for a lot of people here, but I'm absolutely floored at the build quality and overall appearance of a watch that cost me less than $65.

The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the strap it shipped with, but that was an easy fix via a $15 leather NATO strap, purchased from Amazon.

All told, I love the watch. But after discovering how awesome automatics are, dear God, do I fear for my wallet's future.

The Seiko 5 is the go-to recommendation around here. With good reason: It's a great value and definitely handsome. One of these days, I'm gonna order one of these.

For Vostoks, zenitar on eBay is your man. A lot of models are well under $50. If you order from him, it could take a month for your watch to arrive - and it's not the seller's fault. I'd caution against getting a Vostok as your sole watch. I love them (I've always liked Russian stuff), but their quality control is abysmal.

That watch for $50 is lightyears better than a MVMT for $100. It will likely last 50 years, has horology, and can be used as a watch you wear with everyday business attire (non suit) or just as a beater watch. Good buy!

For a miyota movement and a nice dial design it's not TERRIBLE, but you can do better and have one an established, reliable company for cheaper.

Check out the Seiko 5 SNK809 series too. $20 more than the Weekender, but much more watch for your buck. 21 jewel automatic movement so it never runs out of juice, water resistant to 30m like the Timex, day and date display, exhibition back, and stainless steel construction rather than brass. Available in black, khaki and green.

If you're still not sure, check it out on Youtube and note how the second hand sweeps rather than ticks. Quality watch. It comes with a NATO style nylon strap but looks great with a brown leather strap too.

As people have said, something cheap with a second hand. That being said, I wear this every day, except mine has a blue band. It's mechanical, so no winding or batteries to change, had a seconds hand and the date, and has large easy to read numbers. Bit pricey for what I need but it looks good enough to be an every day item for someone who has never worn a watch till he started in EMS.

I would look at something around the 37-40mm range. Take these as an example

Alright, I'm gonna go there /r/watches...Might I suggest a Seiko SNK807 but replace the band that comes on it with the remaining money you have left. It will look really sexy (like this). The reason I say to do this is because it is a small watch that has the added perk of being an automatic. It also has an exhibition caseback which you can see in the photos on amazon, allowing him to look at the gears and balance wheel and whatnot.

I own one, and it's the gateway drug to watch collecting. It's a good, cheap, starter watch - but you'll probably end up getting something more expensive if you really like it.

Pros: it's a good quality, good looking, dirt-cheap (for $30 on Amazon, you can't go wrong.) "basic" field watch, NATO straps are cheap and come in dozens of colours/patterns, the quartz movement is extremely accurate, the battery life is good (haven't changed mine and I've had it for a year), the mineral crystal won't scratch easy so it's a good beater, and if you press the crown the face glows green for night reading (their "indiglo" feature).

Cons: it's simple, there are no complications like date/day, it is loud, it only has a water resistance of 3 ATM (so just splashes), and (I could be wrong) but I don't think it has spring pins on the lugs so you're stuck with NATO straps. Also, if you get right into your watches, you might want a mechanical over a quartz (even though they're more of a hassle, they're just somehow cooler - the Seiko 5s mentioned are automatics). Personally, I don't love the polished case either - I prefer a more subtle brushed steel look. If you do get one, be aware you can get them with a white or black face. The watch is 38mil in diameter, too, which is about the smallest you can get for a men's watch - so be aware if you have a big wrist it might look small.

This is a great alternative if you want a mechanical watch, but it's a little more expensive - but still great value.

It's going to be tough to find an automatic that keeps time "well" for $100-$150. Most automatics in the price range will gain ~8 seconds/day. Seiko or GShock are good bets. Seiko 5 is a good, cheap automatic beater and has decent lume.

All of these Seiko's are well regarded, quality products (I own a SNK805). They're mechanical watches, not quartz. The first one, the Seiko "Recraft" SNKM97 is (I think) the only one with a "sunray" radiant dial.

1 or #2: good price for a quality watch that keeps running for years. They also have a very classic look. Maybe they are a bit too much for everyday usage. I suggest a Seiko 5 for everyday use. Also this one is an automatic (which means no batteries -> it gets its energy from your arm movements).

It's this SNK805. I'm really hoping to switch out the canvas strap with a leather one, though.

A Seiko 5 is an excellent entry level watch. It's an automatic movement (which means it actually uses gears and springs powered by your movement instead of a battery) for less than $50 occasionally. It's an automatic too, so no need to ever change a battery. If you're not going to wear it consistently it probably isn't for you though.

A lot of the Seiko 5 line are very attractive and you can buy a leather strap separately. While I wouldn't say the face of these is minimalist they are still good looking.

Hi my dudes.

I asked earlier about the G-shock for a field watch but it is too big for my wrist plus I am not so sure about the style anymore. I'm looking for a watch that I will work outside with. I dug a lil about field watches and found some that I am interested. If any of you have an opinion on them (except saying they are cheap watches...I don't want to invest lots of money on a watch what will get in the mud, snow, hit on trees etc):

Seiko 5 SNK805 (I love the brand but for a rough condition field watch I guess it is not optimal)

The Seiko 5 SNK805. I've only had mine for a few weeks, but I really like. Still haven't found it's strap yet though.

When you refer to the $50-$60 version, are you referring to the SNK series? The SNK is ~36mm, while the SNZG is 42mm.

The case is literally plastic.


A bit more expensive but still a bargain is the Seiko 5 series, which I own and love.

I'm considering buying this Orient watch (Amazon link) as I've been looking for a relatively inexpensive (<$100), small (~38mm) watch, preferably automatic, with a green dial (but not olive green like the Seiko SNK805). Do you think it would be possible to replace the metal band on this Orient watch with a NATO strap or a leather strap? Also, do you think this watch would look okay with a different, more casual band, or is the watch too formal for that? Anyone have any other watch recommendations that meet my criteria? This Orient has been the only watch I've managed to find that checks all the boxes.

Gotcha. Alright. Well as I said I can see the appeal of it for some watches. I like this and it seems like a NATO strap would be fine for that. Still, it's not too flashy.

The watch you're looking at is that expensive because it's a Swiss mechanical movement, the only way cheaper than that price is to go Japanese mechanical or a quartz.

Costosi dipende dal marchio, un Seiko vintage lo porti a casa con poco. Se vuoi c'è tutta l'orologeria russa che costa due spicci e ci sono modelli veramente carini e originali, basta cercare i marchi giusti.

Poi vabbè, se è piccolo non può avere troppi orpelli estetici visto che prendono molto spazio, tipo cronografi o cose del genere. Qualche compromesso bisogna farlo, altrimenti prendi un Casio digitale e fine.

A watch. One of the few true 'deals' I've seen on Black Friday / Cyber Monday is for Timex watches on Amazon. Last year, I purchased the Expedition Chronograph for <$25. You can also opt for a Timex Weekender or a Seiko like this one.

At that price point you are basically limited exclusively to cloth wrist-band watches; Timex Weekender, or others which might be on sale, like this Seiko. I'm not even sure you could get a leather band alone for less than $40

Seiko 5 is always good for a first automatic watch. This green one is only about $60 right now. I find that prices fluctuate on the different styles of these. I have the blue dial/blue strap version and I paid somewhere around that when I bought it a few years ago. Right now my version is ~$110. Not "open hearted" but you can see the movement on the back.

MFA has already recommended the Timex line, but there are lots of other choices. I suggest looking at military style watches or diver watches. Here are a couple to get you started:

  The bands are all easily swapable, just find the band size and order something to your liking if the included band isn't what you want.

1. Is this faster than I should expect?
   
2. Is there anything I can do on my own or are the only options a potentially costly servicing or exchanging it for another? (No tools, etc.)

That would be amazingly useful. This is the watch I wanted to put it on. Though the face looks more green in real life than it does in that image.

Is this Seiko too busy?

I just got thisSeiko that is very similar a few weeks ago and I have to say I love it. That being said I also have an Eco-Drive that I love just as much. Build quality is pretty much equal between the two. I think it really is just a matter of personal preference.

Recommend these . Change the strap to something you like, or wear it as it is.

It's good to think about the investment, but don't worry that you'll be wearing them for eternity. There's selling and trading any time you want. But more than that - one day, you will have some money to spend. Maybe not a lot, and maybe not every day, but I promise, it'll come.

I'd consider:

A Vertigo Diver One V2 (about $250) - the blue I think is particularly cool.

A Timex flieger (<$40US) - first watch I ever bought. I totally still wear it.

The Bambino ($150)- a fine little dress watch, modern and sleek.

A black-on-black diver, such as the Orient Ray Raven ($200) - this is a fine watch that also is a little different.

The perfectly lovely Seiko 5 (also comes in black, blue, beige) ($55), and/or a titanium Seiko ($88). A lot of watches that cost a hundred times as much as these will deliver less to you. I'm tempted to say "most," even.

These things tick LOUDLY. I have one and rarely wear it because it's so loud.

Sorry, but you're being a pedant. Your own referenced link provides the fact 3 ATM is when it withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 30 meters. It is the very definition.

I was essentially refuting his point that it was "terrible for a watch" when this is most definitly untrue.
