Hey nice looking watch man! All I know is that it uses a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, a common quartz movement in today's watches. Nixon is mostly associated with skaters. surfers, snowboarders, and other street sports of similar kind. As others have said though, they do not get much love around /r/Watches because they are considered a fashion brand. My first watch was a Nixon Timeteller years ago. It was good, then I lost it. Then I found it again recently.

WEAR A WATCH.

Yes, your phone can tell you the time. But being able to turn your wrist over to give or check the time is so much more elegant than fishing through your pocket, pulling out your keys, putting them back in, digging out your phone, turning your screen on for a split second, turning it off and then stuffing it back into your pocket.

Your watch doesn't have to be crafted by a master artisan in the Swiss Alps (but that's cool if it is) and it doesn't have to cost more than a small house. You can have a simple Timex for $30 on Amazon with a NATO band that can easily be replaced with another band of any color or pattern you want. This Skagen is wafer-thin and looks at home at the office or out on the town. Prefer an automatic but don't want to break the bank? Bang. You can even get a diver that most people would mistake for a Rolex/much more expensive watch for less than $50.

Wearing a nice watch ties together a wardrobe. It's the cherry on top of a sundae, the salt (or sugar) on the rim of a margarita. So wear one.

This Seiko is a great first watch. It's mechanical and he can watch it work through the display case back.

MVMT watches are well known for being low quality "fashion" watches. These fashion brands are usually aimed at a younger audience so it makes sense they advertise on podcasts. In my eyes they aren't even worth the ~$100 price point. Sure they'll last a while, but so has my 10 year old Timex I got for 20 bucks, or some dollar store one I got as a kid.

 


If you are actually looking for a quality ~$100 watch, look at Seiko, Citizen or Orient. /r/watches is a very good place to learn, and you might find, like countless other beginners, that the Seiko SNK-809 is for you (my first "good" watch was the SNK-807), which is $50-$70 and a real mechanical automatic ("perpetual" for those of you across the pond) movement. Anything from Seiko 5 range is an incredible starter automatic watch.

 

Do some research if an automatic movement vs quartz movement is right for you (quartz is the basic battery operated watch that the "guts" can be found in watches ranging from $500 Movados to dollar store watches). I REALLY like seeing how things work so I really appreciate the mechanics behind an automatic watch. The downside to them is that they aren't as accurate as quartz (a normal range of inaccuracy is like +-10 seconds a day). But you'll never have to change a battery if that is any consolation. If that puts you off, keep in mind that a $10,000 Rolex has an automatic movement good for +- 5 seconds per day. And as a final PSA, stay away from Invicta. Their automatic movements, cheap pricing, and flashy looks may look enticing, but quality control is horrendous. Just as with any potential purchase, do some research on a watch you think looks promising. Give the model name a search on google or /r/watches and try to find a consensus.

 

For those of you who have been thinking they want a watch but haven't started exploring styles (which is the demographic companies like MVMT pander to with their styles) here is the classic "diver" style watch with the Rolex Submariner. A cheaper automatic dive watch I've been wanting for a LONG time is the Seiko SKX007, which obviously pays homage to the Sub, but is about $5800 cheaper. I'd replace the bracelet with something better than what is there though. Maybe I'll get it after college...

Another well loved cheap diver is from Orient, the Mako, though I prefer its big brother, the Ray, even though that is even closer looking to the Submariner.

The absolute best in budget vs quality in a dive watch is the ~$40 Casio MDV-106. You can get a decent 22 mm steel bracelet for almost the price of the watch and it will look fantastic if that is your preference. I've borrowed my brother's a few times and the thing feels like quality and has been put to the test plenty of times to prove itself as a real dive watch. He goes swimming, hiking, plays sports with it, drops it on concrete, etc. Rugged yet elegant looking. Good size too. Highly recommended first diver or first watch!

If you are looking for a real dress watch with "minimalist design" that doesn't look tacky like MVMT's (sorry, just my opinion), there are plenty in the Seiko 5 line like I said, or the lovely Orient Bambino.

 

Came back to say that if you don't really know if you want a watch, don't think you need to spend $100 on your first. Who knows, you might not like how it feels or looks on you or whatever. For the absolute cheapest of cheap, get yourself a Timex or Casio quartz watch. These brands are well renowned for their reliability. This way you'll end up spending only $15-20 on a watch that will last and work forever (obviously with battery changes along the way).

If I were to do it again I would go with a slightly darker band. Perhaps one of these

Edit: okay so as I type the jury is busy correcting the areas where it denied that any infringement took place but granted Apple damages for some reason. And they've just asked for clarification because it seems they do not understand what they did wrong.

Is it just me or is it a bad idea to just rustle up a few random people and ask them to decide such huge and complex issues based on a whim? They decided on the legality of 700 alleged patent infringements in 3 days, less than the time it took me to choose a watch to buy this week. (For those interested I got an SNK009 and a black leather strap to replace the canvas one). I feel they just wanted to go home for the weekend. And as a result consumers will pay, potentially for decades.

If you like dive watches, you are better off saving up a bit and getting a Seiko SKX instead. It's much higher quality, and will only cost a bit more. They can be had for under $200 easily, sometimes as low as $170. You can also get a Seiko 5 field watch for like $60, which is a great deal! These are both automatic watches.

Having read through your comments, my suggestions would be as follows:

The last two of them are the most casual of the bunch. They can be worn daily, while the rest are semiformal and he should at least be wearing a button-down of some sort as opposed to a t-shirt with them.

This Seiko 5 - SNZG15 is my first automatic watch. I’ve owned this watch for 2 weeks now but I didn’t want to post it here until I received the dark brown leather NATO I ordered for it. I think it compliments the watch nicely and gives it a more sophisticated look from the cheap strap it comes with. I was torn between this watch and the Seiko SNK809 but after looking it over I chose the SNZG15 because its larger in diameter (42mm vs. 37mm) as well as it is waterproof up to 330ft (100m). If anyone else owns this watch I’d love to see what straps you recommend for it. Thanks!

Timex Weekender's seem to be the go-to for a lot of people here. I've got two, but I think I'd rather have a Seiko 5, it's an auto (doesn't run on a battery). There's something kinda neat about automatic watches and the Seiko has a really good quality/price ratio.

If you want to just mess with the movement, I would suggest a 7S26 as it's widely used in Seiko's 5 series (most people's first foray into automatic watches) and has good documentation.

If you'd rather buy a watch in case you want to delve into modding, I would suggest the SNK809 due to it's price which is usually ~$55 and has dropped to $41 during sales. It's powered by the 7S26 so the documentation I linked above applies as well.

For just taking apart the movement, you'll need a movement holder (the "vice" you mentioned), set of small screwdrivers, and small tweezers at minimum. For taking apart a watch completely, you'll also need a caseback tool, hand removers with dial protector, and crystal and hand press with dies and tips. I'm probably forgetting some essentials, but you can peruse Esslinger's tools page to get an idea. Finger cots, Rodico, and air blowers are usually nice to keep the movement clean for reassembly. I'm not familiar with the lubricants used, but if you ever decide to clean the parts with an ultrasonic cleaner, you'll want to look into those.

Aside from that, watching some videos and checking out some picture albums like those posted by /u/Slyvix will prove informative regarding workflow. His latest one was particularly enjoyable and includes lots of nice pictures.

You've heard wrong. MVMT is the absolute worst company for the price. It is just a chinese watch with chinese movement, nothing new. avoid brands like these, for ex: Daniel Wellington. I suggest you start by looking at Timex, my favorite brand. After that, Seiko, Orient, Citizen etc. I'm giving you amazon links to my favorite ones.

Im a mechanical watch person, and my go to suggestions in the under $200 price range are Orient and Seiko. Even the $70 Seiko 5. I have had one of these for near a decade and it still just chugs along. Probably the most suggested budget dress watch has to be the Orient Bambino. If youre looking for a quality quartz that has chrono functions, I dont think the Timex Weekender can be beat.

There are others, but those can get you started.

Phone, wallet, keys, watch, knife. Those are the things that I always have, though I also carry a backpack when it's convenient/needed that also contains a Kindle, water bottle, simple first aid, sanitizer & soap, emergency whistle/compass/magnifier/thermometer gadget. I tend to wander off into more remote areas frequently enough that these can come in handy. Interestingly, the first aid supplies have been used to help others far more often than for myself.

I would look into one of Seiko 5 SNK series, like this one. If you like the two-tone look, you could always buy a two-color nato for it, like these.

For your second Junkers, it looks awfully similar to this. I'm not familiar with the Junkers brand so I can't comment, but Seikos are rock solid, heart touching. You can get it for a whole lot cheaper off eBay. There's also one with a metal bracelet quite like the one you've posted up there. They're the 809s (not sure if the bracelet version is the same.)

I personally have this and it's a can of whoop ass. Came with a metal bracelet but had it switched with some NATO straps. Those can be had for under 200 USD; the 809s can be had for less than 100 USD easily.

So anything in that diameter that's not an SNK809? Cause if you don't know about it, you'd LOVE it.

You can't beat the SNK809, always a great starter watch in the seiko automatic world. 21 Joule movement for only ~50 dollars is such a good deal. It's also more versatile than many watches and considered a more military/sportier option that could be dressed up with a leather or nato strap if absolutely necessary. I own this watch and recommend without hesitation.

A more dressier watch to consider would be the SNKL23. Has some great reviews on youtube for being a great starter dress watch. I don't own myself but have seen multiple people proclaim its greatness.

Seiko's SNK809 Men's Automatic Watch!

A much better option is the Seiko 5 SNK80XK2 series. It's a quality automatic that looks almost identical to this, and still comes in at a very affordable price. Available in Beige, Green, Blue, and Black.

If it has to be < $50, then you should stick with a Timex - get a real Easy Reader or maybe a Camper.

If you can go a little above the $50 budget (to $70), you could get something like a Seiko 5 Automatic

It's an automatic, meaning you won't ever have to buy a new battery, and overall it's just a great watch for the price. I'm curious to see what other people suggest, but I expect this will probably be the best you can do for your price range.

I interpreted you're comment as you're looking for a watch in the same price range that is automatic as opposed to quartz. If that's the case, the Seiko 5 is thought of being a great watch for the price and can come in around the same price depending on which you go for.

You can find them cheaper in the US if you're from there. They're available usually all over the world. Just be careful when using Deet products (ex. mosquito repellent) since it eats away at the resin.

If you're looking for an analog watch that you can beat around I'd say this Seiko 5 SNK809. It will also fit smaller wrists not to mention its probably one of the cheapest reliable automatic watches available from a reputable company.

perhaps look into the tangente 33mm at 33 millimeters in diameter its small enough to fit the smallest of wrists (a standard Timex Camper watch is about 38 milimeters). Also look into vintage watches, men's watches used to be as big as modern women's watches and you can score some amazing pieces for only a couple hundred dollars. Or if you want a great cheap modern piece, the seiko snk809 is small (37 milimeters), uses seiko's fanatstic 7s26 movement (in house, automatic movement by seiko, I own a seiko snzh57 with the bigger 7s36 movement) and is styled after some historical pilot and military watches. It's also one of the most popular watches on /r/watches (which I Xposted this video from) I recommend subscribing to if you want to get into watches, I say that from personal experience. I realize you probably don't care, but as a watch nerd I felt the need to help out someone with watch related problems.

Seiko SNK809. 43 seconds slow since November 3 (The last Daylight Savings change).. It was off by more than that, but then I took the back off and tweaked the little timey changey thingy, even though you all already know I had no idea what I was doing. I've had it since October 2010, and it's still my daily wear - mostly because I have to in order to keep it going, but I do love taking it off my wrist and showing people the innards. Also, it's come off my wrist an fallen onto waxed-tile floor a couple times when I was putting my backpack on at school, and the shock obviously hasn't done anything at all to it.

You can buy pretty much any Seiko 5 for less than $100. They make great starter mechanical automatics. Hell, the omnipresent SNK809 is only $50 on amazon right now.

I like your idea of a watch. I suggest an mechanical watch like this Seiko . This a watch that can be worn for a lifetime with regular maintenance. The straps can be changed for his changing style.

Heavily recommended around here is the Seiko 5 SNK8XX series. I have the SNK809 which is the black watch face and I absolutely love it. Can wear it with a black leather band/stainless steel one for dressy occasions or a NATO strap for casual wear.

Timex Expedition is a great watch for value. It's a battery operated Quartz.

If your looking for an "automatic" check out the Seiko SNK. It's a lot more quality for still a good price.

Just a heads up, if you do purchase, purchase from Amazon, and not one of their sellers (for example, Imperial Watches, the one linked). The reason is because Amazon is an authorized seller of Seiko 5s, and you will receive the Seiko warranty. If you purchase from one of the sellers, this is not so. In fact, it may not even be packaged in the blue Seiko box. I say this from experience - I bought one for my dad and it came in a black generic watch box.

Plus, it is an automatic watch - if anything is out of calibration, I sure don't want to open it. If there are any problems, you can simply exchange it through Amazon. I am sure the process with resellers would be more of a hassle.

I bought this watch about 4 months ago or so. I love it. was around $50 USD and it was automatic. I plan on one day getting a Hamilton but for now this will do. I replaced the strap with a leather one and the watch feels like a whole new watch. Feels so different I'm enjoying it. Maybe doesn't really go with my uniform but it's OK. For now I'm happy but i have been eyeing a chrono though ever since i found out about automatic thats all i want so not sure if ill get a quartz chrono or save up. Dat Omega Speedmaster though.

obligatory Seiko 5 comment. if you cant find a seiko 5 model you like there are near infinite modding options and parts to choose from, so if you see something with a case shape you like you can replace the dial, hands, bezel insert, crystal etc. I've done one Seiko 5 mod for my dad myself and am working on my own SKX007 mod right now. great watches for the money, you can find some on amazon for ~60ish USD.

I frequent /r/watches but I'm no expert and they would be able to give you better recommendations. That being said, I'm often at constructions sites doing work with concrete, vibrating machinery, heavy chains, etc so I do have experience working in rough conditions while still needing to look presentable when I'm at the office or laboratory.

Off the top of my head, here are my recommendations:

Bernhardt Field Watch. I wear this daily and my last post on /r/EDC has one which you can look at my history to see. I highly recommend this.

Seiko 5. It's an automatic so the moving parts have a higher chance of failing but it is used by many as a beater watch. It's tough enough to withstand a lot and cheap enough to replace. A leather band replacing the NATO strap will make it look more presentable. Again, I own this watch as well and I posted a picture of it in /r/watches.

Luminox has a reputation for being tough but the aesthetics might be close to G-Shock

Hamilton comes to mind as well, they make pretty good watches but I have no idea how well they hold up. The one I linked seems pretty robust.

Can you give more information on what you want? You've mentioned minimal look, so no chronograph or anything fancy on the dial. But do you want a mechanical watch, quartz, solar etc?
Some watches people like to use as introduction watches are the Seiko SNK 809 or Orient Bambino . Also whenever buying a watch, I would go with the bracelet option whenever possible and buy after market straps. This way you have more options, and the bracelets are often more expensive to get separately

Being an automatic, he won't have to replace any batteries and it'll last a long time if he takes care of it. What do you mean by doesn't tick? Are you talking about you want it to have a sweeping second hand like on a mechanical watch? If so you're not going to find a lot of options under $50. The SNK809 is a fantastic choice and it is close to your budget. You can add a leather band to it to get closer to what you want. Those two together make for a pretty good looking combo.

You can find some very cheap mechanical watches on Amazon that more of a "so cheap why the hell not" purchase if you have a few watches already. If you want something that is going to last a bit longer I would go with the Seiko personally.

EDIT: I should clarify. An automatic watch is a mechanical watch that has a weighted piece in the back, called a rotor, which swings with the movement of your arm. The rotor winds the watch. And if you wear it everyday. It will probably never die on you.

No worries, we're all learning. An under $100 mechanical mostly points to one of the Seiko 5 models. There are so many it's hard to list them all. The SNK80X are the most popular, but not exactly minimalist. Something like the SNK789 might be more along your line, but you can pick any of the Seiko 5's and it will be fine.

Tiny bit above budget, the Citizen NH8350 also comes in black and a much sought after blue sunburst. Nice mechanicals for a great price.

If you want a true Bauhaus minimalist watch under $100 though your best bet is quartz (you could even build a nice small quartz collection for under $100):

This guy looks sharp, has a metal band, and hosts quite a few features such as: light, alarm, timer, stopwatch, and date display. Kind of a “dad watch” but very clean and practical for the price.

Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Duro Analog Watch, Black

This is a cool diver watch that is a huge bang for your buck. It looks quite a bit more expensive than it actually is. Has a one-way rotating bezel (dive function) that is very secure, a locking crown, and you can swap the band to tailor the look to what you are wearing. It is actually water resistant and I have seen people use it while diving. I put a striped nylon strap on mine to get that James Bond Rolex Submariner vibe.

Seiko Men's SNK809 Seiko 5 Automatic Stainless Steel Watch with Black Canvas Strap

This is probably my personal favorite. You can get it in a couple of different color schemes and I got mine (black) for around $60. This is an automatic watch so there are no batteries. It winds as you move, which is great if you wear it everyday, but not so much if you swap it out for a couple of days. It’s pretty small and lightweight and the lume (glow in the dark, Seiko is usually regarded at being very good for it) on the face is insane. While backpacking I’ve woken up in the middle night with the face still glowing as if I had just flashed it with light. You can swap the band on this as well, and I’ve found the NATO straps to be a little nicer than the standard canvas strap. It’s isn’t as dressy, but definitely a great watch. The movement is also a pretty unique Japanese movement that scrolls like most higher end watches instead of “tick tick tick” which can be loud and annoying at times.

There is also the Timex Weekender option. They are pretty cheap and you can find them everywhere. They are available in a ton of color options so for $100 you could probably grab a few different styles. They make a bunch of designs of them as well, but they are definitely just cheap everyday watches and can be quite loud.

Most really rugged watches will be durable, like a Casio G-Shock. The Casio DW-5600 is excellent for that. I'll make a list of some other options!

Well, how exact of a reproduction of the look are you after? There's a sub-$100 Seiko 5 that's clearly inspired by the same German WWII watches, but is far from a literal reproduction.

Sure. The Seiko SNK80x series is quite a popular inexpensive automatic. It's a little on the small side at 37mm, but it's a nice clean design with a decent Japanese-designed but Malaysian-made movement (hence the cost savings). Some say it's a little loud and not too accurate (+/-15 to +/-20 seconds per day is not unusual). But for the price, it's hard to argue that it's not a good value.

Going up in price but at or near $200 is the Seiko 007 series. This is a good value 42mm diver. You can get the rubber strap model to bring it under $200.

Seiko-SNK809-Automatic

Simple, analog, self winding, and a mechanical movement with proven durability. If it's a daily wearer you'll probably never find it dead. I get about wind 16 hours out of it if I skip a day. It is a bit on the small side (38mm) compared to other contemporary watches, but should be pretty close to your old Timex. Seems like watches are getting bigger by the year these days. Be sure to check out the customer pics on Amazon.

The citizen The_Thought_Police posted elsewhere is a solid choice as well.

1. Seiko SNK809 "Seiko 5" - This is my dress watch. I swapped the band for a nice black leather with a butterfly clasp. Wear it pretty much only with a suit, which I've had to do a lot lately for interviews. Understated, elegant, and the only automatic I own.
   
   
2. Timex Easy Reader - This is the workhorse. I bought a couple of nylon NATO bands and ditched the stock band. I wear this at work and pretty much in any casual setting. If I ding it or spill something on it, not the end of the world. Got it on sale for $15. Quartz movement and 10yr battery. Solid piece of work, classic Timex.
   
   
3. Timex Expedition Chronograph - I like Timex. They make good stuff and it's functional. This is my most recent acquisition, Amazon had 50% off Timex watches for Cyber Monday. Also got a couple of NATO bands for this one - here's the black/grey stripe one I'm currently using. This watch kind of sits the middle ground of beater and dress. I wear it when going out for pretty much anything except work or formal stuff.

My personal opinion is no. The general advice is to buy a watch from a watch company, rather than a company that puts its brand on another company's watch.

What draws you to this watch? It kind of looks like you like simple black watches. Do you like large watches? Do you like field watches? Do you care about quartz (battery powered) vs. automatic (a weight swings around in the back and winds the spring; less accurate, kind of cooler, more expensive to service in five years). Like pencilcup said, field watches are a very casual style.

Seiko SNK809 is a great watch for starters and is very popular in this sub. The Timex Weekender is an alternative if you're a little tight on the budget or prefer quartz over automatic watches. And finally there is also the Classic Gold Casio if your teenager in particular wants to be a true OG.

I daily a seiko 5 SNK809, this one. It's a mechanical automatic watch. The hands and dots for each number glow. it's a little thick and the band it comes with sucks but I replaced it with a thin leather NATO strap. I recommend it highly. It gives a very accurate time, needs no batteries, and looks great. It costs as much as a normal timex right now and the second hand is really smooth.

The actual point of this is that it's a little bit thicker than a weekender but with that thickness you get a mechanical timepiece with a clear back to show off the movement. You've probably seen the watch on here before. it seems that everyone in /r/Watches has one.

The Seiko 5 (SNK809) is pretty much the 'go to' lower budget field (military) style watch around here. It's well within your budget, is automatic, is very well made, and has a cool display back. Additionally it's on the smaller size. With the money you'll save you can get a decent strap for him with it, or even a combination of straps.

I guess you could try some watches at local stores to be sure of the size.

I don't have the AMW330D-1AV but have a different model from the same line and have looked closely at the AMW330D-1AV in real life. I can recommend them, they are well built and durable. My only complaints are that the bracelet is somewhat more noisy than on my citizen, swatch and orient, and the battery is really small and does not last the 3-5 years that I am used to on digitals.

Having a chrono is very useful for me, but the subdials can be small and harder to read than digital displays. At your age I don't think this will be an issue.

Seiko makes some smaller watch at good prices in 36-38mm sizes, both in quartz and automatic. If this is your first ever watch, the inaccuracy and requirements of automatics might be disconcerting.

This is a well regarded Seiko automatic with a very good price and small size. For a bit more you can go solar.

If you want a great "bang for your buck" watch, take a look at a Seiko 5. More specifically the SNK80 series. They are sub-$100. Automatic / Kinetic, so don't have to worry about batteries.

Plenty of colours as well, black, green, blue and beige. I would recommend swapping the fabric band for a NATO strap. Pick up a few different ones, dressy and casual.

I bought a black one a few months ago, and I wear it the most. Over some of more expensive ones including Citizen Eco-Drive, Michael Kors, Orient, and Hamilton.

Also, great point about the size of the watch. Just take my word for it when I say that I don't think that any of them have really large wrists/forearms that would make a small watch look weird.

I'm 17 years old, so pretty similar in age. I just bought myself about 2 weeks ago a Seiko SNK809 and put a cheap leather strap on it which altogether cost me $70. Here is a picture of it. From the photo, the strap looks black but it really is dark brown. I put some wax on the leather to waterproof it right when I got it and holds up pretty good. The metal case scratches pretty easily but it's it still looks ok. The watch looses about 15 seconds a day.

If you are looking at something more accurate, get a Quartz, such as a Timex weekender for $50.

If you're interested in automatics, Seiko has a bunch of great options within budget.

I would like to throw in the Seiko 5 as a very viable option to the Timex Weekender. Little more expensive, but it goes on sale pretty often for like $50. It's a great way to introduce yourself to automatic watches, its really versatile and looks much better than it does in the bad pictures on the amazon article. Get a couple NATO straps like almost any of these that aren't to flamboyant and you are set for most occasions. Of course, if you just have loads of cash to blow then go for something nicer, but this is the ultimate basic watch in my opinion.

Seiko 5 (SNK809)

Owner of SNK809, and I don't know if another automatic watch can compete with it at the price point. Solid build quality, keeps good time, not large (I hate big watches despite having bigger wrists), great company behind it, and it has the field watch look that I think is great for everyday wear. I insist that if buying, you buy new strap(s) as the one it comes with it garbage.

Citizen Eco Drives go on sale for <$100 pretty often, just check /r/frugalmalefashion regularly. That's the best casual watch in your price range, imo. If you want a different band just check out cheapestnatostraps.com or NATO Strap Co.

If you don't mind a slightly heavier/thicker case then check out the Seiko 5 line. They're $50 and mechanical (self-powered, no batteries), and extremely well-made for the price.

I just got my first Seiko 5. The watch is on the smaller side, so it actually fits under my dress shirts. It is very nice reasonably priced workhorse of a watch. It seems to hold its time perfectly, +/- 1 second over 3-4 days. I will probably change the band to leather, but that is not a big deal. I may end up getting one in another color, I like it that much.

Bullet-proof and lasts for years. I have a 20+ year old version that's still one of my favorite watches. Plus you get to see it every so often in TV and movies.
If you want an inexpensive mechanical watch, start with a Seiko. For $56 you get probably the cheapest name brand mechanical watch on the market.

I know just about everyone here is on board with the Timex Weekender (for good reason given its cost and versatility), but if you'd like something different, check out the Seiko 5. The automatic models are all pretty great. I have a similar build with long, thin arms so consider something <40mm. Maybe this. It's a great timepiece, offered in several colors, and you get the same versatility with switching out NATO bands.

I recently lost my Citizen chronograph and I'm in the lookout for a replacement. I don't wan't to spend more than $100, though. My workplace is business casual (chinos, loafers, OCBDs).

I have seen the seiko also come highly recommended on /r/malefashionadvice and I'm not sure which one to pick up. I've been sitting on this for a while because I'm wondering if the extra $30 for the Seiko is worth it in terms of quality.

I've not heard of the Vaer myself, and the Seiko isn't bad, and would be the one I'd gravitate to, just for the name. Have you considered a Seiko SNK809? I say this because you say your friend is a girl, which typically means smaller wrists, so the smaller 809 (there are other colors too) might be better? The plus or downside with the 809 is it's an automatic movement. So if she takes it off for a couple days she'll have to reset the time and date, but it has a nice exhibition back, and comes in well under your budget, leaving you plenty of cash for a handful of NATOs for her to play with.

If you're looking for cheap automatics, a good place to start is anything from Seiko 5. Here's a pilot-themed watch for about 60 bucks on amazon: Seiko SNK809 on amazon. It's a bit small by today's standards, but it's proof that automatic watches don't have to set you back hundreds or thousands of dollars.

I bought the SNK809 at the suggestion of /r/watches. It's a wonderful daily watch and I highly recommend it.

I work in heavy aircraft maintenance and I've worn it every day for 3 weeks now and though it gains about +5s a day that I've noticed it otherwise has had no problems. The crystal hasn't gotten a scratch on it at all yet (which surprises me greatly, I've heard some negative things about hardlex) and the case still looks brand new other than a tiny nick. I hated the band, though. If you get one, pick up a NATO, it's worth it.

Depends on your budget. I think getting the Seiko 5 in black and adding a Worn and Wound leather strap looks really great.

All in all this would cost about $150

The Timex Weekender is a NATO strap watch, meaning the strap can be easily switched. This leads to more versatility in color, but you can always just stick a leather NATO on it. Ah~ that's a flieger watch design. Most reputable sellers with flieger design will be higher than the price range you are looking for. There is this swatch and seiko 5 which is type B style, which looks like a cross between flieger type A(that you were looking at) and a field watch. They both have a mechanical automatic movement(doesn't need battery and stores energy from your body moving around) and is from respectable watch companies.

There is also this watch from citizen that I suggested recently to another person. It has the clean black dial like the flieger, but is more of a field watch set up. The watch is solar powered, and they run for months even in complete darkness.

Just saw this timex as well, so I'll throw this in here as well. This on is just classic battery powered, and has indiglo so the dial should light up when you press the crown in.

Hey man, as a small wristed fellow I do sympathise with you. If you're looking for some cheap aviation style watches, here are a few I would recommend.

• Seiko 5 SNK803 - a classic, well loved, 37mm and pretty cheap as well
  
• Tisell Pilot - more expensive at £159 but arguably worth it considering you're getting 40mm case, miyota 9015 movement which is pretty solid, sapphire crystal with ar coating, SuperLuminova and 100m water resistance.

If you're looking for something a bit fancier but not crazy expensive, check out the Seiko SNK809 or SNZG15 automatics (same general style but different sized cases). No more batteries and they're pretty bulletproof. I've got a 809 that I've been wearing for about six or so years now. The only thing I've had to do to it was swap on a NATO strap when the original one finally wore out.

What other characteristics are you looking for?

My favorite is a Seiko 5. Bonus, it'll never need batteries.

My daily watch these days is a Seiko SNK809 on a NATO strap (the stock strap is crap). If I'm travelling and need something absolutely indestructible, Casio G-shock DW5600. Two simple, no-nonsense watches that will probably last me a lifetime, for around $100 total.

I'm starting to get more into watches, and my next watches will probably be in the four-figure range (eyeing a Sinn U2 and Nomos Tangente). Equally BIFL if you take care of them, but a completely different league altogether.

This is a lot of watch for a very affordable price. Although probably seen as a men's watch the size works well for women. You will probably have to change the strap depending on your wrist size but it's still a good value watch. I think any watch really 40mm and below has potential to be a good women's watch as long as the strap fits.

First, I got my Seiko 5, a new leather strap, and the tool to change it for around $100 and I love it. Seiko makes some dependable watches that are easy on the wallet.

Orient is also a good choice, although you may need to hunt for a discount on websites other than Orient's in order to get within your price range. I personally love the Orient Esteem and am getting the one with Arabic Numerals for Christmas.

My model came with a metal band, but I primarily wear it with a light brown (dark beige) leather band.

It's an awesome deal on an automatic time piece and they're very reliable.

Popular choice for a canvas strap is the Timex Weekender. But some might say it looks a little cheap, and you might feel it looks a little cluttered.

Another popular choice is the Seiko 5. Good quality, low price, simple design.

I also like this Bulova, but you might think the face is a little flashy. And Citizen always makes a good product, although I haven't had any experience with this model.

The Seiko 5 line is pretty much standard to 37mm and has a whole variety of styles including some pretty dressy ones like your Victorinox.

Although most of the Hamilton line is about 40mm, you could check out some of their 'Classic' style watches which tend to run smaller.

Finally, Christopher Ward has a few smaller style watches as well.

One thing to really pay attention to when looking at smaller watches (and watches in general) is how thick they are. My SNK809 looks tiny on my wrist compared to my old Timex Easy Reader even though the Seiko is actually a little larger simply because its thicker by a few mm.

Perhaps a Mondaine? I've got pretty thin wrists as well, and I've had my eyes on Citizen bm8180 and Seiko 5. They're on the small side, 36-37 mm, but they're still a bit thick. Note that changing the strap isn't too hard. I also remember Stuhrling being recommended as cheap and slim.

To build on what Coffeeshopman said, if you're going to invest a hundred dollars, it may as well be a hundred well spent. The brands they listed are all Japanese and offer a good value of reasonably well made watches at lower price points. Citizen may interest you in particular as their Eco-Drive watches run off of batteries which are recharged from sunlight and artificial light, requiring very little maintenance.

Furthermore, you may need to investigate what kind of watch you want ( e.g., quartz vs. automatic, which is to say, battery-operated vs. self-winding mechanical gear operated) and what features you would like (some watches you linked have a chronograph / stopwatch for measuring elapsed time). There are pros and cons to these things, but most people on this subreddit heavily favor automatic watches.

I realize this is $23 over your budget, but if you can swing it the Black Seiko 5 is an awesome watch. For not much more money than a weekender you get an automatic movement rather than quartz, and in my opinion better styling. Look at the customer submitted images on the amazon link I included.

Not really sure exactly what style you want but a nice Seiko 5 field watch would be cool. As far as divers go, quartz is prob your only option under 100. Casio Diver Here is a pretty classic dress watch Citizen Dress or an automatic just over 100 Orient Dress For something ultra-casual G-Shocks are super nice and durable. G-Shock Timex also has some great options

I have one of these. I also have a Seiko 5 that is a similar style.

Il you want to try an automatic watch you may want to look at the popular and cheap Seiko SNK809 (or 807, 805, 803 for different colours). It has a low but rapid ticking, similar "pilot" style. It's a very good value for ~60$. With the right strap it can look awesome.

It really depends on what you're looking for in a watch. If you're looking for a nice dress watch around that price point, I would recommend looking in to this Citizen.

I personally don't really like the second watch as much but you should go for it if you like it. The Seiko 5 and this Citizen are some of my recommendations for entry level watches.

Hey don't worry about getting laughed out of this subreddit! I know the watch community can be daunting, and in some places, full of elitists. But this subreddit is really one of the most accepting communities at any price point, hell, F91-Ws hit the front page every week.

Unfortunately that was the main reason I responded, I'm not too qualified for suggesting analog watches. Many people recommend Timex weekenders (Timex has nice cheap watches, try checking out their other ones. You'll probably be more into them)or the infamous Seiko 5 when it comes to budget pieces, but they don't seem to fit your description too well. It's going to be really hard to find an automatic/mechanical that size for $55. This is smaller than you want, but it's a simple automatic in that price range.

Hey guys, looking to spend <$120 on my first watch, I'd like to wear it daily as well as sports and nights out. I've looked at this Timex Chronograph as well as this Seiko and this cheaper Seiko. I value durability/reliability and comfort over style/functions. Was wondering if you guys could offer some advice.

Daily wear for me until recently was a Seiko 5 Automatic SNK809 on a bond-pattern NATO strap. ^Not ^my ^photo, ^but ^looks ^the ^same. It's a mechanical watch that uses old-timey clockwork, and even has a display back so you can show people the gears and cogs inside. Cheapest way to get into mechanical watches without being flimsy Chinese stuff, around $75 plus however much you want to spend on a different strap.

I also have a retro Casio calculator watch as per Marty McFly which I'd pair with casual outfits if I felt like something different.

I've since joined the smartwatch crowd and daily wear a Moto 360 Sport with a custom watch face that I designed using an app.

Weekenders check all the boxes of iconic, presentable, and affordable. Probably the best watch in its class.
For a slight step up from the Casio 91w, I like the 105w, which has a slightly cleaner face and a much better lume.
The Seiko SNK809 and its variants are also classic for a reason, and still well under a hundred bucks.

I see that you wrote that everyone here seems to like the weekender. It's one of the better budget watches sub $50. It looks like you're open to suggestions, but seeing as how you're looking for affordable watches, I'll keep my suggestions under $100.


Might I suggest getting an automatic watch instead. Seiko 5's are incredibly popular as a first "real" watch, the most popular I've seen is probably the SNK809.


There's also the Citizen Eco-Drives with a lot of popular models such as this one, but keep in mind it's still a quartz (it's a quartz watch that automatically powers itself using a built in solar panel).


There are other watch makers (or even vintage like the affordable Vostok Amphibias) I suggest these two lines of watches because they are automatic watches from reliable watchmakers that make your watch more than just something to keep track of time, we have cellphones and other devices for that. You can find the suggested watches cheaper elsewhere than Amazon usually.

Surprised to see that Timex isn't getting more love. They make really solid pieces for a pretty affordable price - you can find their Weekender and Expedition lines for under $30 (and great cream dial options), either of which could be worked into business casual. I have a Fairfield Chrono that is one of my favorites for business casual outfits.

Another fan favorite is the Seiko SNK8 line (with black and cream options) - these are automatics instead of battery-powered which is fun (especially with the clear case back to see the movement), but you have to reset the time if you don't wear them every day. Seiko has all sorts of decent options under $100 too.

Orient (a Seiko subsidiary) is well known for being a quality entry-level brand. If you prefer diver style watches, the Mako/Ray automatic divers are stellar, and the ridiculous amount of Bambino models are fantastic dress watches that can easily be dressed down.

If you're looking to take the one quality watch versus several cheaper ones, I can't say enough good things about the Hamilton Khaki Field. It's pricier (~$450) but it fits with almost anything (casual, business casual, even masquerades as a dress watch at times) and I pretty much wear it almost exclusively these days. Of course, if you're willing to spend $500+, there are a dizzying amount of options out there.

Two other notes: don't worry too much about the strap color. Most default straps are low-quality and you can easily replace it with anything you want (spring bar tools are like $5). Second, I think the real issue most folks have with fashion watches is that they're just straight up overpriced (aka it's a $10 watch sold for $100+) and you can usually find off-brand versions of most everything on Ali Express. That said, if you really like a certain watch, forget the haters and just buy it - it's going on your wrist, not theirs.

The often recommended Timex Weekender and Seiko 5 are good options.

For well under $100, you can get a Seiko SNK809, or a SNKE63, or nearly any other model under the Seiko 5 umbrella. There are tons of variants and it's easily modded if you want to personalize it.

Try the Seiko SNZG15 or the smaller Seiko SNK809 for an affordable automatic that fits the style you seem to like.

Citizen is one of the best consumer brands around and have been doing Eco-Drive for over 20 years, I personally would not worry about their solar mechanism failing and/or repairs any more than the automatic Seiko's or the movements in the Hamiltons you listed above. So if you like the Citizen, go for it.

I have this watch with this nato strap and love the combination. You can get both for under your $100 dollar budget and have an awesome automatic watch with a really nice strap.

In casual wear you don't really need to match leathers as much. Though some people prefer too.

Timex are generally good quality for the price point.

Im completely nicking this from a thread last week, but (a) I have one and (b) it was a great suggestion. How about a Seiko SNK809. It’s quite small and based on an old pilots watch. You could also get these NATO straps for it so he can change the look. The grey one is very similar to the one James Bond wears.

Not sure where you live but if you type in seiko 5 on amazon you will get a ton of options. Also off 20 seconds a day is normal in this price range. Usually the difference evens out as long as you move the watch around a decent amount while you are wearing it. If the watch stays in one position all day gravity will cause the escapement to increase its amplitude and thus damage the time keeping. I personally own a Sekio Pressage automatic with a NH35A movement with a similar amount of time lost perday if left still. If worn consistently you may only need to correct the watch every 3-5 days (which is pretty good btw). Hope this helps.

The replacement broke after the 30 day warranty was over, so I opened it up thinking "its broken, i really cant brake it any more", and fixed it.

Two days later it stopped again, and i dont know why.

So basically, I'm buying my first watch, and I'm planning on a Seiko 5. My dilemma is wether I should buy the Seiko 5 809 or 807 (black or blue face). I kind of like the look of the 807 more, but what I'm worried about buying the 807 is that it's less versitale, I wont probably buy another watch for a little while, and I would like to be able to use it both casually and in more formal events (probably with a black or brown faux leather strap).

Not just romantic. Think of it this way. A DW will cost you $15/year for batteries, a diver even more because of gaskets and pressure tests. If this lasts more than 7 years before you throw it out it will be cheaper than just maintenance on the Quartz. Also you might want to give it a try and specify that your mostly focused on fashion (although 'that' they might not take too lightly too xD). That's not like saying "for a little bit more" - $60 is already more than twice the cost (I got mine for about $40). The best thing about it is its a simple, quality-yet-cheap quartz watch. It doesn't look cheap.

That said, though, for maybe $10-20 more you could look at a Seiko 5 SNK809. It's very similar, but an automatic with a date feature.

Seiko 5 I would change the strap to something that appeals more to you if you don't like it. Great starter watch though.

Invicta Pro Diver Ive heard some debate on the quality of these watches, but for your purposes I think it would work well.

Casio G-Shock Solar Sporty solar G Shock similar to the one you linked.

Seiko Solar Another Seiko but this one is on a metal band and is solar powered.

Timex Weekender Another great starter watch that comes in a million color combinations. I got one for my brother as a gift off Amazon for $17 when they were having a sale.

I too have rather skinny wrists for my size (6'2, 160lb) and I wear the Seiko SZNG13 on NATO straps. Here it is on my wrist with an orange NATO (Needed something high-vis for my job). It is 42mm diameter which is probably the max diameter that looks normal.

I would definatly consider the Seiko 5 SNK809 which is probably the best bang-for-buck there is for watches. It has an auomatic movement that is proven, durable, and reliable. The watch itself has a versitile design that can be worn almost anywhere with just a quick change of the strap.

A general rule, I would stay under 42mm for the watch diameter and try for 40mm or less.

It's posted to an absurd degree on this subreddit, but here's the Seiko SNK809. It stretches your budget by 10 bucks, but has free shipping if using Amazon Prime. It is an absolute workhorse, there are literally probably more than a hundred people on this very subreddit that swear by this watch.

What I mean by my previous comment is that if I scratched the crystal I would be very disappointed considering the cost of the watch and repairs.

By wearing my cheap Eco Drive to work (retail, nothing that physical at all) and being pretty careful with it, the crystal still has quite a few scratches over it and I'm quite disappointed in that alone.

I would hate myself for scratching a watch that costs at least 10x as much and again I have no "fancy parties" or anything to go to so I have no reason to own such a watch. I though I had already made that clear lol, but I hope you can understand now.

Also here's the final nail in the coffin for our original discussion, Rolex supposedly just changed from a two year warranty which is what we were discussing is such a ridiculously low number for such a high priced mechanical watch ... well the $50 Seiko 5 has a 3 year warranty and everyone knows it's mechanical

I know Rolex increased theirs recently, but that's besides the point, for apparently a long time, a $50 mechanical watch had a better warranty than one costing well over $1000.

I’m on a hunt for my first watch and I’m a teenager so i can’t spend a crazy amount of money so I ran into two watches the seiko snk809 and timex weekender but I want opinions on what is a better bang for buck so any comments I would greatly appreciate it

Any of one, two, three, four for a casual daily watch, like with jeans/shorts and tee? I will wear them to work as well, but dress code is casual so yeah. I have really small wrist (about 45mm width) and metal bracelet feel massive and heavy on my wrist, so I guess have to do with leather or nylon. Not sure if the nylon strap look too childish or look out of place with the rest of the outfit though :(

It depends. I work for an airline and we always have to be pretty conscious of the time and digging my phone out takes time and looks bad so I usually wear one (a Seiko 5). But during the winter months I usually end up deicing a fair amount and deicing fluid gets everywhere and into everything so I haven't been wearing it lately.

It's a quartz movement, so you'll have to change the battery every couple of years and it will keep better time than any mechanical movement you or I could afford.


If the size is right, I might consider getting the bracelet version and inserting a Seiko 5 into it.

2 Timex Weekenders or 1 Seiko 5 OR Citizen Eco-Drive Canvas Strap OR something else entirely? My only watch is a G-Shock.

Would you prefer a metal bracelet instead? I personally have this. The stock photo doesn't do it justice. The bezel and sides of the case have a nice polish, and the brush isn't as flat as the photo looks. It also looks great on black leather. I wouldn't buy it at the current price of $99 though - I got it for $62, so you might want to shop around.

I am going to get married soon and would like to get watches for my groomsmen, and the guy usher. I am paying for their Tux rentals so my budget is around $50 or $60 each. Out of the 8 of them, only two wear suits/ formal wear with any frequency so I'm trying to find a watch that will work for the wedding, but also be versatile down the line for more casual wear.

Hamilton is a really solid brand. The Khaki is technically a military-style field watch, but it is done in a way that is very elegant, which makes it great versatile everyday watch. Personally, I'd save up a bit longer for the mechanical or automatic, but if you feel quartz is better suited to you, then go for it. Macy's is an authorized dealer for Hamilton, so you will get the peace of mind of a manufacturer warranty.

Also, if you wanted to give mechanical a shot without spending too much money, an option would be to try a cheap Seiko SNK809 / 807 / 805 / 803. You can get one for under $100, and it has a similar style to the Hamilton Khaki, plus the day of the week.

Yeah, your least expensive quality automatic should be a Seiko 5 (they also have them in different colors - off white/tan, green, blue). It is more of a casual everyday watch. The Orient Bambino is a really nice looking budget dress watch, also. I have a Bambino and the Seiko Presage that this post is about, and both are automatics with hand winding which is nice and convenient.

I've also been looking at the Timex Weekender and from I've read that isn't a bad choice for the price, but a lot of people say it can be loud. It is a simple watch, and that is what I really want though I do like the chronograph look and function.

Diver's style watches are probably the main "sport" style. The only other "sport" style that comes to mind is the pilot's/flight/flieger style watches ("flieger" is German for "flight"). Two popular types of flight watches are:

Why everybody, I am looking to buy a everyday watch for under $100. I’m really just looking for a watch that will go with everything and I can always wear. So far the ones I’m considering in no particular order

Timex Weekender

This is nice because it’s cheap, and I could swap straps. However a lot of people complained of how loud it ticks, and it’s not water resistant

Timex Weekender Chronograph

This was my initial choice, but I have since second guessed myself and now am leaning elsewhere. I feel like the case is too thick, and it’s not too water resistant.

Invicta Pro Diver

I’m iffy on the metal band. I do enjoy the actual look of this, just not sure if it’s too classy.

Seiko 5 Automatic

This is the watch that’s in first right now. I would definitely purchase a leather strap for it off top, but some people reported it didn’t keep time well.


That’s my list. Overall, I’m just really looking for advice. I’m not very watch savvy, and would appreciate help by some of you pros. Let me know why these watches are good or bad, and offer some insight. I appreciate it!

Here's one more. It's a lot like Hamilton Pilot but without the triangle at 12. And also it's a hand winding old school mechanical movement. But it's a beautiful piece. Plus you get to fully enjoy movement on the back.

Definitely the Seiko; I just ordered the SNK809 and am happy with it. Don't expect great accuracy, but you're getting a well-built automatic for well under $100.

I think that the cheapest seiko with a mechanical movement and suitable resistance for swimming would probably be an SNZ or something similar, although that isn't even remotely close to the same look.

I know this goes against your requirements, but i still have to say: SNK809 + bracelet for $80. Then use the rest of the money for flowers, chocolates, night out.

I think this watch is sexy on a woman, 38mm, easy to tell time, waterproof, automatic, caseback, $50, +$60 dollars for a night out = win.

I will echo a couple of the comments on this thread: those are pretty different watches, and I would go mechanical if it were me.

Note that a couple of those come with canvas straps. Straps are very easily switched out however. And they are a bit cheaper than what you're looking at currently. Both Seiko watches also have open case backs which are a nice plus imo.

Automatic watches can be pretty cheap; a commonly suggested Weekender alternative is the Seiko 5, a $56 automatic. You can swap out the strap, too, so it can be as versatile as you want it to be. It's 5mm smaller than the watch /u/iamMD suggested, so it's not that great for huge wrists, but most people would find it adequate in terms of size.

The always-popular Seiko SNK meets every one of your requirements except thickness (13mm). Available in black, blue, green, and khaki.

You won't find a good skeleton watch in that price range. If you do find one it may look nice, but more than likely it'll be very cheaply made and won't be built to last. For around 150 you have a ton of options. I'd recommend the

Orient Mako, it comes in a variety of colors

Deep Blue makes a nice dive watch, this is the quartz version, the mechanical version is a little more expensive.

You can also look into homage watches like Alpha but these are lesser quality than the ones listed above. I'd stay away from brands like Invicta, Stuhrling, and even something like Skagen. If you're going to shell out $150 might as well get your money's worth.

I'd look at a Seiko 5, in particular this model.

It's available in four colors, with fabric strap or metal bracelet. Nice mechanical auto. Has quite a good reputation as a durable workhorse and bit of a sleeper in the Seiko 5 lineup.

Yea, but I have a black military SNK809. r/watches has already seen it, bit I suppose I can post pics for posterity and for future reference. I was under the impression that my seiko was more casual than my easy reader.

Well, I think there are quite a few good points made in here already, but I guess my $.02 is that for slightly more money, you can find lots of options that will serve you better as a watch. I think quartz watches are valuable for some purposes, but for that much, I'd either go with an entry-level automatic, maybe a Seiko 5 SNK809 and forego the chronograph feature, or spend a bit more and buy either a used mechanical chronograph or maybe a Citizen Eco-Drive with a similar aesthetic such as these. However, if you like that watch and you don't care about mechanical vs quartz, or don't care that you'd have to change the battery in that quartz (vs a Citizen Eco-Drive, Seiko Solar, Seiko Kinetic, etc.), you should get it.

I agree with Orient. If you want something a little less dressy, you can go anything in the Seiko 5 line. They are also mechanical and run around $50-60 on amazon. There are both dressy and casual options.

Since you liked the J.Crew one, you could buy a Seiko 5. I thought it was one at first. Beige, Blue, Black etc.

You could also get a leather strap to it, like this (thread).

These have a reputation as a good affordable entry level watch but are also supposed to be a little small. I've never seen one in person though.

I like a lot of Nixons designs, and admire G-Shocks for their well carved out niche, but I would buy this Seiko automatic for that money.

That depends on how you're going to wear a watch. There are some casual ones with great aesthetics such as Citizen, Seiko, and the MFA famous Timex.

This watch uses the Seiko 7S26 movement, the same one used in the r/watches favorite SNK809. The SNK809 sells for ~$60. It looks like the watch you're buying sells for ~$100.

Absolutely. For around your price range or a little over, Seiko or Orient watches are great and will last/won't fall apart. Plus, they will look better in person. Even if you want to stay relatively cheap, I would go for a good Casio or a Timex before an Invicta. No, that's not what you're looking for. The only reason you'd get a Timex is because you want to save money, right? If you're willing to put in extra money for a watch band, you should just get a better watch altogether. There is no point in upgrading a Timex; it's like getting getting a new paint job for your busted pickup instead of getting a nice sedan. I tried this Seiko for about half a year. If I didn't wear it for a day, it would stop working and need to be reset. Then, most recently, the kinetic "winding mechanism" stopped working and so now it is useless. Not a fan of Seiko.

I think referring to a $4K watch as a "Grail" Watch is just ridiculous. This watch is completely obtainable for the average person, with just a little bit of effort and saving.
