I picked up a Seiko chronograph (my first chrono) for sailing and a base Seiko 5 as a practice watch for modding / repair.

u/Fpoama · 4 pointsr/Watches

I purchased this Seiko two weeks ago and really like it.

The face is dark-brown and only turns light-brown when viewed from certain angles in light/sun.

The hands and outside hour markers also illuminate in the dark which is a nice touch.

Hello! Off the top just a quick thank you to r/Watches for being so helpful and welcoming. I purchased my first watch in 2015, a Fossil chronograph, which served me well considering I knew nothing about watches when I bought it. Since then I have developed an interest, which this sub helped to kindle.

I received this watch, the Seiko SNN241 Chronograph, from my dad and step-mom as a belated graduation gift in August. Since then I have worn it almost daily. I quite like the date window, which my previous watch did not have. Another unique note is that the second hand is actually the bottom dial; the "main" second hand is used for the stopwatch function.

Have a great weekend folks!

do you mean SNN241? there is no SNN24, is it this one?

SNN241

if so, when you push the crown in after setting the time, do you see the small hand in the sub dial at 6:00 moving? on a chronograph the large second hand only moves when you engage the chrono using the pushers. the "running" seconds is usually done by the small hand on a sub dial.

next, if the small seconds hand does not turn, does the minute hand move with time? for example, if you set the time and leave the watch for say 15 mins, does the minute hand reflect that 15 mins has gone by?

many Seiko Mecha-quartz like the VK64 have no rinnig seconds, although I dont think this is a mecha-quartz movement.

let me know, and post some pics or video of what you are doing, that might help.

of course it could just be defective, but lets find out first.

For quartz watches, it's impossible to not talk about Citizen and Seiko. Both brands are Japanese and make awesome (and affordable) quartz watches. Check out both of their brand guide pages, they make nice stuff. The citizen Eco-Drive watches, when supplied with light, while run for nearly forever.

As for me, I'm sort of in the same boat as you. For my first "real" watch purchase, I got a Seiko SNN241 and love it. The face is much more reflective then it looks in the picture, which is nice. Also, the outer and inner rings have a slightly different sheen to them, which adds a nice stepped look. I couldn't be more happy with it, and it's priced really nicely.

I like this watch: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0044XDZII/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1395102404&sr=1-7&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70
Should I buy the Casio 5 and a aftermarket leather strap or go for the one above? I would probably guess a twenty dollar difference after everything. Is it worth it?

If you're willing to lose the day (not date) window and trade the Luftwaffe for the RAF, you might want to check out the Seiko SNDA57. I have one and it ticks once a minute. Also check out the SNDA65 and the SNN241. I can't speak to whether the SNN241 ticks, but I believe it's standard for Seiko Chronos.

I'm also looking for a military in the $150-$200 range.

I saw this the other day.

It is quartz and chronograph. Only $88 on amazon right now.

In that budget, the Orient is the best of them.
However, try these:

Hello everyone! I would like to get the community's recommendation for a classic steel case, white dial, brown leather strap dress watch and a diver's watch. My current collection of watches include - Seiko SNN241, Seiko SNA695, Seiko Kinetic SKA553, Casio G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1CR and a Timex Weekender Fairfield.
I am looking for a classic brown leather strap white dial dress watch. I looked around and finally deicded on this Orient Bambino Version 2, but it is not available anywhere! Out of stock at all retailers. What would you recommend in this style which can be an alternative to the Bambino V2 which is in the price range $200-$250? I am also looking for a Diver's watch in the $150 to $250 range. The choices in this category are quite a lot - Seiko SKX Collection, Seiko Monster SRP Collection, the Orient Ray, Ray II, Mako, Mako USA II. It's overwhelming. With the Diver's watch I would like your recommendation specific to quality and technology of the watch. This way I will be able to prioritize my choice based on quality first and then the aesthetics. Thank you!

i did some more lookingI looked some more and found this, the Orient Esteem. The styling is very nice, although i can't say it's the exact font i would choose. It's on the dressy side but i think the right band would make it work, and i tend to wear nicer clothing. But the simple styling is nice, the window is why i like it, a skeleton is too much, the peak just sucks you in (although the plate covering a good portion is annoying). I haven't been looking at mechanicals much but i know it would need to be worn every other day at least to keep it running, and isn't it necessary to be more careful with them (try to to hit my wrist on something hard for whatever reason)? This is way over what i originally said, but there's 30% off, so it's 120. I doubt i'll get it for that, but the price just changed to that and hopefully it will go back down as it was 130 until 4:30 yesterday according to camelcamelcamel, which discounts to 90.
Other than that the only thing i found was the Seiko snn241 which is a little higher than i wanted to pay, especially compared to the orient.

Good points. I'd love your further thoughts on a companion for the Bambino. I'm partial to beige and cream dials, like a calendar, and prefer simplicity but am open to a good looking not too flashy chronograph, like this 38 mm Seiko Seiko Men's SNDC31 Classic Stainless Steel Chronograph Watch with Brown Leather Band https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004JY0KP8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_WF44ybGASF23T. On the other hand (as it were) I really like blue and green dials and have been drawn to the green dial Bambino (like I need two dress watches, never dressing up), and also to blue dial solar Seiko and Citizens. All that said, I'm very open to other ideas and really appreciate your time, insight and encouraging way of communicating. Edit I also like this brown on brown, looks like I'm laying out a mini collection! Obvious dust on dial and other obvious cosmetic defects that could have and should have been caught by a decent QA process is a huge red flag to me. Bought an Orient Mako USA II and there was a huge red paint spill on the second hand and it made it out into the field just like that, as if no one raised their hands during the assembly and go "hey this second hand is pretty messed up". I got my refund but I would be lying if my respect for the brand hasn't been negatively affected since. Also cropped arabic numerals or indices to make room for sub dial is another pet peeve of mine; this eliminate alot of chronograph options for me. Example

In your frat clothes, I'd say the best would be to have a black face with a brown leather strap like you asked earlier. I just recommended this watch but you might like that one. As for brands, Seiko, Timex, Nixon, and Casio should be affordable and good quality.

u/Zualgo · 1 pointr/Watches

Ooh, that brown 7T92 is nice. Found a similar Seiko on Amazon.

u/ZackMorris78 · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

The only thing close with a similar look and 22 band size is this one. $67 dollars after the 20% coupon, which is about how much I ended up paying for the seiko 5, band, and spring bar kit.

Or you could go with this large easy reader for one on the cheap.

However if you have a little more to spend and you don't care for movement, this watch is probably one the best quality/nicest looking ones quartz watch is this one in my opinion. However once you're around the $100 range there are tons of options. /r/watches is a good resource.

u/Alakazam · 1 pointr/Watches

It depends on your budget.

On the lower end, seiko has a lot of good options. This is a very field-style chronograph if your budet is around 100. Citizen has something slightly above that, but theirs is solar. If you wanted a more pilot style watch, Casio Edifice offers a more complicated watch, but looks pretty good imo.

u/kurazaybo · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

May I ask why brown? it's not the most versatile of colors. If you are shopping based on color you will most likely prefer a quartz watch (that is, battery powered).

Another question: how brown do you want to go? like just the dial, band or the whole watch? What kind of band do you prefer? People with hairy arms often complain about metal bracelets being hair pullers. Others like me can't stand plastic bands. What size or dial style are you looking for?

My advice would be to stick to well known brands like Swatch, Seiko, Citizen or even Casio. Hard to go wrong with any of them.

Some of my personal suggestions (pay attention to the size because some are small):
