u/IllClock - for filmmaking on a budget, I recommend an actual RAW cinema camera instead of an 8-bit phone, still camera or fixed lens camcorder.
With a $1000 total budget, you might want to consider a $369 used 1080p Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (with a 90 day warranty from Adorama), plus an $89 Kinotehnik LCD viewfinder, a $22.50 JJC pistol grip, a $16.88 external battery plate with a $2.69 1/4" male-to-male screw to connect it to the pistol grip , plus a $35.99 dual Sony NP-F550 batteries & charger.
This setup will cost you $535.06, which gives you enough left over for a $74.99 Meike 25mm f/1.8 lens, a $199.99 Zoom F1-SP with an SGH-6 shotgun microphone capsule for dual system sound, a $38.99 mic boom pole, a $3.16 boom pole to shock mount adapter and a set of $74.99 set of Senal SMH-1000 headphones.
Here is a picture of my similar BMPCC/pistol grip/external battery rig.
This setup will cost you less than $1000, and give you the ability to produce cinema quality product.
Several features have been shot with the original 1080p BMPCC, as seen here:
And these Sundance 2016 selections:
There was at least one Sundance selection back in 2015 shot on the Pocket as well:
With RAW, this camera records so much information at 1080p that it still looks good upscaled to 4K, as seen here, here, here and here.
Although Blackmagic cameras have a steeper learning curve than consumer cameras, and color grading in post is pretty much mandatory - the BMPCC is the only 12-bit RAW cinema camera in this price range and much better for filmmaking than a traditional camcorder, DSLR or mirrorless camera.
If you decide to go with the BMPCC, you might want to subscribe over at /r/bmpcc and /r/blackmagicdesign - lots of knowledgeable folks there who can help you get the most out of your new camera.
Hope this is helpful and good luck with your fimmaking career!

OKAY! So, I think this is pretty much everything that makes my setup what it is. If you see anything I’ve missed and are curious about, or want more details as to how everything came together, lemme know!
(Didn’t trust USB 3.0 with my wireless accessories, and I love the individual button on control on this guy. Plus, you can’t beat that price!)

Base pieces:
3/4” pine (ply for base, solid for wrist rests)
Table saw for cutting large pieces
Jig saw for details and wrist rests
Molding wrist rests/rounding edges:
Belt sander (Turned upside down, ‘cause I’m not super strong lol)
Wrist Rest Adhesion:
Wood clamps
Wood glue
Attaching Hardware:
Drill with 3/16 and 5/16” bits for cam lock screws
1/4” Drill bit for threaded inserts
1/4” Threaded Inserts

1/4” Dowel Centers for lining everything up - $5.83/4-pack
12mm Cam locks/screws

Hand Sanding, 220-grit
3x Minwax Deep Mahogany Stain
2x Minwax Fast Drying Gloss Polyurethane

Oil Rubbed Bronze Metallic Spray paint to sorta match
The other two things you’ll see in the pics are more specific to my transcription job, but in case there’s any interest:
Hi /u/Falcorpunch - If you haven't ordered already, I would get the compact [Sennheiser MKE600] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B0YPAYQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00B0YPAYQ&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) instead of the [Rode NTG-2] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00093ESSI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00093ESSI&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links]. Costs a little more, but worth it.
I agree with /u/QUalsa on getting the [DR-60D] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CRY250U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00CRY250U&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) instead of the [DR-40] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NACC6M/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005NACC6M&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links] (I have the DR-40 and plan to upgrade to the DR-60 for the superior external controls and form factor).
You'll also need a decent set of monitoring headphones. The best value cans for your money are these [$90 Senal SMH-1000s] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASWZO6U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00ASWZO6U&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Link].
And don't forget to get a [$45 boom] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007V5J5QC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007V5J5QC&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20), a [$15 shock mount] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX40PAQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HX40PAQ&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and some [cable] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000165DSM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000165DSM&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links] to get the mic off the camera and closer to your talent.
You might also want to invest a few dollars in the best book on the subject, Ric Viers' "[The Location Sound Bible] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ATOUXBI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00ATOUXBI&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20)" [Referral Link].
Hope this is helpful!

You'll need a good preamp and a mic with a good signal to noise ratio.
With a $1000 budget, I would get a [$399 JuicedLink Riggy Assist RA222 preamp] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009YMVNHO/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009YMVNHO&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and mount it under the camera (assuming your mic is phantom powered and your DSLRs don't have headphone jacks or audio metering).
With a [$369 Rode NTG-2 battery/phantom powered mic with a shock mount, wind shield and XLR cable] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CVZKJI0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00CVZKJI0&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and a [$90 set of Senal SMH-1000 headphones] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ASWZO6U/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00ASWZO6U&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) [Referral Links], you should be able to record clean sound directly to your camera.
Good luck with your movie and best of the holidays!
I'm looking at the FiiO E10k DAC at the moment, because it looks to be very good for it's price point. Is there anything else that I will be needing to increase my audio quality?
At the moment, I only have these speakers, which I use to play games, watch movies and YouTube, and listen to music. I use these as their own speakers, and I also use them to plug in my headphones.
I'll be using the E10K to plug in my headphones, and still use the Logitech speakers as speakers until I can buy some good studio monitors. But is the FiiO E10K the only product I will need to make all of this possible?
the senal smh-1000 are solid
detachable cable, and you can get sheepskin earpads for them for extra comfort
