I think it could happen pretty easily.

Let's say that you decide that you want a decent pair of headphones and land on a budget of $200. Maybe you have some Amazon gift cards, so you decide to go on Amazon. You start looking at the reviews and come to find that the HD598s are reviewed very well. You read a ton of things that talk about how great they sound, and how well they perform.

You go look around at some other reviews around the internet and see that everyone has the same things to say about the headphones. You look at the specs and see things like "open back" and "over ear", but they're tucked in with things like sensitivity and resistance, which are terms you don't really understand. You think to yourself "well, headphones are headphones. I look at the picture and they look like headphones. I don't know the jargon, but all the reviews talk about how great they sound and I just want great sounding headphones".

If you look on the product page on amazon, you'll notice that there is no reference to sound leakage, either from the description, the top reviews, or the top FAQs. The closest thing you get is this blurb in the description:

> Open-back headphones allow ambient noise for a more natural sound experience

Unless you're familiar with headphone terminology, that doesn't sound like it's talking about sound leakage. It's a very vague claim to say the least.

When I searched for "Sennheiser HD 598 review" in Google, I went through the top results to see when I could find something explaining the potential for sound leakage due to the open design.

  • Head-fi reviews. Without expanding any of the reviews, I didn't see anything that would have led me to understand the potential for sound leakage.

  • Nothing in this CNET review

  • The PC Mag review does make a mention! "Since the HD 598 is an open-back design, it does project some audio outward. Those around you will likely hear your music if you're listening at moderate-to-high volumes."

  • The review from digital trends gives the best warning possible ("Of course, no set of headphones come without at least a couple of drawbacks. In the case of the HD 598, we found that the open-backed design allows for a lot of sound to bleed out."), but it's about 1,000 words into the text.

One thing to note is that the mentions of sound leakage are all buried in reviews that all say the same thing. If you start the review and thought "well, I've read this all before", you might stop reading.

For a lot of people, audiophilia and headphones are a hobby. For others, it's just something you want to spend money on once and just enjoy it. For those casual consumers who aren't willing to really dig around it would be easy to not know that open-backed headphones leak sound.

Sennheiser HD598 $99 on amazon.

u/JammySTB · 17 pointsr/gamingpc

>but all of the responses are "get a good pair of headphones and a clip on mic"

Because this is the best option.

I personally use the clip on Zalman but I've heard great things about the ModMic. If you got a great pair of headphones(many use the AD700, HD558/HD598, etc) and attached this it would essentially be the same as a gaming headset but with significantly better sound quality and better build quality.

If you're going to be stubborn and not accept this, I reccommend going for the Sennheiser PC360. It's typically around the same price as the HD598 but not quite as good...

EDIT: Added links to some products, note that I only looked them up on Amazon, you can probably find everything cheaper if you shop around...

---

EDIT 2: DarkWingPig mentioned virtual surround sound, which is what draws many people towards gaming headsets. You can add this functionality to any pair of headphones using a sound card such as the Asus Xonar DG, Asus Xonar DS, or the Asus Xonar DX.

I have an Asus Xonar DX and, in my opinion, it can work well in certain games such as Counterstike, where knowing the position of a sound is essential, but I don't use it for the majority of games...

A user over at Head Fi called Mad Lust Envy has created a thread reviewing many different pairs of headphones in relation to how well they work with Dolby Headphone(virtual surround sound).

u/BlackDiablos · 16 pointsr/buildapcsales

These are the HD 558, not to be confused with the HD 598.

The HD598 was $99 for Black Friday 2014 and didn't drop that low until Black Friday 2015. I don't know anything about the price history of the HD558, but I wouldn't expect it to drop this low again for some time, even though the price has been steadily dropping for some time.

u/Enricky17 · 14 pointsr/radiohead

I'd recommend the Sennheiser HD 598. They are literally the best headphones you can get for under $200! Radiohead is a band that has a lot of intimate and detailed songs. These are open-backed headphones so the sound stage is really wide and makes you feel like you're their with band! Also I recommend these for any genre of music really; if you want an intimate and detailed experience.

I love my HD 598's that I got a couple years ago

u/feanor726 · 8 pointsr/indieheads

I love, love, love my Sennheiser HD598's.

This review sums them up pretty well. You'll fall in love.

They're $100 off Sennheiser's price over at amazon.

Ask yourself what type of gaming you do. I was playing CS:GO on a pair of ATH-M50x's and while the deep sounds were great, for music even more so, I ended up enjoying all "positional" FPS games much more when i got a pair of Sennheiser HD 598's. Ridiculously priced on amazon right now.. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2

I was considering a Mod Mic but decided on the Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB with a desk clamp and windscreen and do not regret it one bit. I'm surprised with the quality of this mic and i don't have to wear my headphones to use it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QJOZS4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are far and away the best sounding and most comfortable headphones I've ever used: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2

I know they might be outside your budget, but if you get them, you won't be disappointed.

u/LcRohze · 7 pointsr/pcgaming

I love how everyone is recommending overpriced garbage sounding headsets when the OP asked for headphones. Check out Audio Technica AD 700xs, the're simply amazing. The Sennheiser HD 598 are also superb. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Headphones-Burl-Wood-Accents/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1381815860&sr=8-8&keywords=sennheiser

Black ones are $130 right now on Amazon.

Highly recommend them. I've got them connected to a Soundblaster Z and they sound nice, not sure if there's something better I could be doing in the sound card/amp department.

u/Xaxziminrax · 6 pointsr/CFB

Which, incidentally, are on sale for $150 right now.

(If anyone reading this doesn't know headphones, that's a fucking steal)

u/mr_roo · 6 pointsr/Games

I wouldn't recommend any traditional gaming headsets, you would do better to get a good pair of headphones and a separate mic. Gaming headsets have good mics, but the speakers are almost always lacking compared to similarly priced headphones.

I've used many headsets from Logitech, Steelseries, Razer, Turtle Beach, and a few other companies, and anything from Sennheiser, Audio Technica, Beyerdynamic, Denon, AKG, or the multitude of quality audiophile manufacturers, will give you far better audio.

Sennheiser makes the only really good headsets in my opinion, the PC350 and PC360, but they are expensive at around $200, and don't sound as good as the HD598's for about the same price.

Steelseries makes okay headsets, but are over priced for the audio quality. The 5Hv2 and 7H are incredibly comfortable, and the Siberia v2 are quite comfy as well (not if you have a large head though, I have 7 7/8 hat size and was fatigued in an hour). Also their build quality is very good. They produce very accurate locational noise, but be warned as Steelseries headsets have no bass at all at the cost of having very clear footstep identification.

I wouldn't even consider Razer products as their build quality is sub-optimal.

Check out: reddit.com/r/audiophile and reddit.com/r/headphones for all the info you want on good headphones.

Also www.head-fi.org/a/headphone-buying-guide is a good place to start.

For gaming I use Audio Technica ATH-AD700 and Zalman Zm-Mic1. The AD700's don't have a large bass presence, so bass thumps don't interfere with footsteps and important locational noise (which they produce very accurately). These are by far the most comfortable headphones I have ever had on. The ModMic is also a very good mic option for any headphone.

Do a little research on the audio sub-reddits and you will find the perfect solution for your needs.

u/homeboi808 · 6 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

Monitor headphones mean that they aim for a flat EQ, they don't favor any frequencies (low's, mid's, high's). Almost all expensive headphones (besides Beats and Boss) are monitors, and many/most are open back (zero noise isolation).

I bought the Sennheiser HD 598 for $100 on Black Friday last year, and those are your popular entry-level "audiophile" headphones (they are super light-weight as well).

As for the M50/M50x's, my brother has them and they are slightly bass heavy, I feel they are more than appropriate for music listening (they aren't comfortable for listening hours on end though).

If your budget is sub $150 and you want closed-back monitors that still have a good bump for bass, the M50/M50x's are very good.

Why 558s ??

Go for 598 : sennheiser

Or the new model 599 👌

u/Nekomii · 6 pointsr/battlestations

You should look into open headphones. Sennheiser is a great brand if you don't buy too cheap (like the 518 you mentioned).

I've got HD 598's and they're extremely comfortable & fit your needs - should look into them.

u/sometimes_ramen · 5 pointsr/headphones

http://camelcamelcamel.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/product/B0042A8CW2

The cheapest I've seen them brand new has been $99 USD for the past two Black Friday sales and I personally bought one last Black Friday. I would assume it would hit that price again with Amazon and their SE version this Black Friday as well. It has also gone as low as the 70s Like New for a short period probably due to returns of the SE edition and there was also that presumable price mistake on the Ivory color for Like New a couple of months ago if I'm remembering correctly. If you need one immediately, you can probably find one BNIB for like $120 USD give or take.

u/obamaluvr · 5 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

Turtle beaches are among the worst crap you can buy.

If you want to really drop a decent amount, you can buy some pretty good audiophile headphones for a bit over $200. You'll need to get a separate microphone then, but that is a very good option for music and gaming.

Something like the dt990-pro, q701, or HD598

u/bwc_28 · 5 pointsr/investing

There actually is a bit overlap. When some people go into Best Buy and purchase a $200 pair of Beats if they had known better they would have bought a different brand. Audio Technica makes some awesome headphones in that price range, Sennheiser has some decent ones (this pair in particular fits the mold of the Beats demographic), and the Grado 225i is considered by many the best sub $300 pair of headphones out there for only $200. Yes, it's a different aesthetic, but there are people who buy Beats and think they have great audio and just don't know any better. Because of marketing.

So the Denon receiver is an older model but one that has held up very well since its inception in the early 2000s. Would be a perfect little amp to start an awesome listening station.

I'm not very well versed in the turntable side of things but a quick Google tells me it's an entry level turn table that is a little older. Not sure how it will sound/perform.

As for the RC-95 I believe you can run your audio through that bad boy and then it lets you control the level with the included remote(again, just Googling here, not a ton of info on this bad boy)

As for speakers, gosh there are so many and at ALL different price ranges. Personally, I have had good luck with Klipsch and Polk Audio speakers. With the system you have these should rock out pretty hard and sound really nice: [http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Synergy-F-30-Premium-Floor-Standing/dp/B003XRD9TG](Klipsch Floor Standing Speakers)

If you don't want to break the bank and want to have a rad audio experience might i suggest some awesome headphones and a DAC/AMP for them: [http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419844009&sr=8-1&keywords=hd598](Sennheiser HD598s)

Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!

u/throwaway93257 · 5 pointsr/LoveLive

Three questions:

  • How much are you willing to spend?
  • Where will you be using these headphones (home, work, walking in public, trains, etc.)?
  • What kind of fit are you looking for (i.e. buds vs. over ear)?

Sennheiser HD 598s are a great midrange option (always wait til they're on sale), but your mileage may vary depending on your answers to those questions.
u/tide19 · 5 pointsr/buildapc

I have used the following setups within the last year, ranked in order of preference:

  1. Sennheiser HD 598 + Antlion ModMic 4.0 - $200 total - Perfect for gaming, positional cues are OP
  2. Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus + V-MODA BoomPro - $230 total - Love the sound, closed back isn't good for gaming though
  3. Philips SHP95000 + V-MODA BoomPro - $110 total - Similar to HD 598s in effectiveness, clamping force is much worse though
  4. Audio Technica ATH-M50x + Antlion ModMic 4.0 - $170 total - Nice monitoring headphones, not the best for gaming
u/0st_ · 5 pointsr/Overwatch

Get a really good headset like a Sennheiser + a modmic, "gaming headsets" charge you ridiculous prices for a terrible quality mic and a decent headset which they act like gamers want surround sound which you don't. 7.1 is terrible for gaming. I have the Sennheiser HD 598s + a modmic
which has 10x better quality than 90% of most gaming headsets today and the combo only costs around 200$. If you have money to spare, and are looking into getting a good and worth your money headset, I would suggest getting the 2 that i just linked. Hope this helps.

u/danr3l · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

That's actually the highest you'll see them on Amazon. If you're looking for a good deal I'd wait - graph down the page shows they've been as low as $171, $215 recently.

Sennheiser HD 598, I got them for Christmas and they have great quality and are really comfortable. I think they're also on sale right now.

Sennheiser HD 598 Over-Ear Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Z7ANub0MQ3X5Q

u/DildoFingers · 4 pointsr/CodAW

Don't buy into "gaming headsets". A nice pair of headphones with an external mic will give you way more sound quality. If I were you I would get:

Sennheiser HD 598's- http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Headphones-Accents/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1414427164&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=sennheiser+hd+pro+598

Ear Force DSS2 - http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Force-Surround-Processor-63043006306200/dp/B006W41X36 (not sure what is up with that first picture)

Zalman clip on mic - http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1-Sensitivity-Headphone-Microphone/dp/B00029MTMQ

Then you'd need an adapter to hook up a 3.5mm audio to whatever controller you're using. You can simply get a male 2.5mm to female 3.5mm adapter (won't give you chat volume control) or you can use something like this http://steelseries.com/us/products/outlet/steelseries-spectrum-audio-mixer-xb if you're using a Xbox 360.

This setup is almost exactly what I use and it's amazing. I use Sennheiser HD 380 Pro's and Ear Force DSS1.

u/CricketDrop · 4 pointsr/AskMen

I don't really know much about earbuds. I'm not a typical user though. I like circumaural ones. These were like $250 when I got them but they're much cheaper now.

u/Kami_no_Kage · 4 pointsr/PS4

Okay, you're not getting much good here. You're not going to get less bass or any kind of deficiency in sound, first of all. Good headphones don't not have bass or not have good bass, it's just different from the artificial stuff you'll hear on typical gaming headsets or beats. And the advantage with buying real, good, headphones, is that they can be used for anything. Music, movies, gaming, etc, they'll be better at all of it than anything you have right now.

You definitely want something open for fps gaming, but if it'll be a problem for sound leaking in or out, you don't necessarily need those. They'd be better, but they're not absolutely necessary.

I use HD598s. They're perfect for gaming, with a wide soundstage you won't find out of many headphones at all in this price range. Anything more expensive than this, and you're getting into diminishing returns for gaming imho.

If these are too expensive, they have a little brother called the HD 558s. These are nearly identical in sound according to most people, as they use the same drivers and thus the difference in sound is from materials, and a simple mod that removes the foam in the cups supposedly makes them nearly indistinguishable.

Now, for something closed, I would maybe suggest something along the lines of V-moda Crossfadess or the very famous ATH-M50x.

I'm not a huge fan of ATH-M50s, they're pretty overrated nowadays, but lots of people use them for gaming, and since you're starting off, they're likely better than anything you have right now.

If you need a mic, may I recommend a Modmic. They attach to your headphones, they're pretty good value. If they're too expensive along with a pair of headphones, you'd really be fine with any old cheap mic. Even a $10 one would probably be comparable to some expensive "gaming headsets", believe it or not.

Since this has already gotten really long, PM me for any IEM recs. And check out /r/headphones for much more information, probably better than anything I have here.

Good luck!

If she doesn't mind open backed headphones get her these

u/CuffRox · 4 pointsr/edmproduction

Yes.

Any headphones with really light pressure, or headphones that have velor earcups. I personally use the Sennheiser HD598s. I have no problems with my ears aching after wearing them for hours.

u/sunnishly · 3 pointsr/headphones

Bought these for $249.95 on Amazon. They really haven't dropped much in price, but honestly I think they're worth every penny at full MSRP. The velour ear pads, coupled with the cushioned head-pad on the top make these cans extremely comfortable. They're pretty sturdy, so I can see them being used for years to come. Highly recommend these as a nice, quality pair of open headphones.

u/orange-cake · 3 pointsr/buildapc

My setup right now is a pair of HD598s and an AT2020 USB+, and while I'm certainly not a hardcore enthusiast, from what I do know, it's one of the better/best combos you can go for without worrying about getting an amp, dac, or any of that. They both have different and/or newer versions available, but any jump up in tier will probably see a huge price hike (the hd600 would've been as much as the 598 and mic together, idk if you could justify that).

Both of them sound incredible compared to anything I've used in the past, and as a daily driver to bring with you places I couldn't recommend the 598's more (provided you buy a shorter cable; they're basically studio headphones and come with only a 3m one that's a huge hassle), and you can't do that with a headset!

Alternatively you can get a yeti, it's in a similar price range to the at2020 and I've seen a lot of good reviews. Personally I needed a mic that worked well with my super-deep voice, and I had read of some issues with the yeti that I haven't experienced with the at2020. I could be totally off base there though, I don't think it really matters too much! And if you do want to look into a DAC or and amp later on, the non-usb vesion of the at2020 is a good choice too

Tl;Dr for about $300 on sale you can get a great separate headphone and mic situation instead of dropping the same on a headset that might be lacking on one or the other.

u/Diaggen · 3 pointsr/headphones

AKG 701/702's or Senn 598's are both good choices in the $250 to $280 price range. The Senn's are more comfortable for long listening (headband on the AKG's can be hard on the head) but I prefer the sound of the AKG's. I will note that the AKG's require quality amplification. Laptops/sound-cards/MP3 players aren't going to do these any favors.

ATH-M50's are a popular choice more in the price range of the mdr-xb500's. Not having owned either of the Sony's or the M50's I can only go off reviews. I get the impression however that they have about the same bass accenting characteristics.

The ATH-AD700's I think are a really good all around headphone, especially at just over $100. The purple throws some people off, but it grows on you. I use this set for everything from late night gaming, tv/movie watching, and of course listening to music.

I'd recommend using these as a starting point. Read some reviews on Head-Fi or amazon (many head-fier's post reviews there, especially on quality or popular headphones).

u/japaul32 · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I would recommend a pair of HD 598's and a headphone amp. Or the AKG k701/q701.

I own the HD558, and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, and I use them in conjuction with a Schiit Magni. My favourite for comfort and overall audio quality is the HD558. If I want some more bass in my music I switch to the DT770 Pro.

Take a look at this

Edit: I'm assuming you're using onboard audio. If so, take a look at a amp/dac combo like this

Edit2: You guys in the UK get some great prices. Here's the DT990 Pro. Definitely want to get a headphone amp with this guy.

u/BaksideAttak · 3 pointsr/headphones

ATH-AD900 is a good choice. I also like and frequently recommend the Sennheiser HD 598s.

u/Immiscible · 3 pointsr/headphones

I'd probably recommend the Sennheiser HD 598, it's extraordinarily comfortable in the sense that it's very light and can be worn for 10+ hours without problem. The same can be said of my second recommendation, the Philips Fidelio X1. It's extraordinarily comfortable, perhaps more so than the 598's, with much more bass.

That being said, this link contains the most exhaustive list of headphones and how good they are for video games. Keep in mind that most "A" range headphones will need an amp, driving up the price.

u/jbisch · 3 pointsr/GlobalOffensive

This is the regular price for these. They are almost always this price.

I use Senheiser HD598's. I bought them for 150$ at B&H when I was in NYC a little while ago, best headphones I've ever owned. They're open back, so the soundstage is also very good. I've made insane calls where I told people the exact position somebody was during my deathcam before. 10/10

So I stayed up from 3am to 8am last night to watch the 66th Kohaku music show, just because Love Live had a 3 min segment in it. But instead of tuning out after seeing it, I kept watching all the through and discovered a lot of amazing artists. I've spent the day looking up songs from SMAP, V6, EXILE, and Miwa to name a few.

I never realized how much good (Japanese) music there is out there outside of our narrow anisong bubble. I've been missing out. Anyone got recommendations?

Also I got my new Sennheiser HD 598 headphones today, which may also play a role in making this music sound so good.

u/amtrisler · 3 pointsr/battlestations

If you care about how good your audio sounds at all, upgrade your headphones and your speakers. I recommend the Sennheiser HD598 (HD598SE if you don't like the color) or the Audio-Technica ATH-M50. Both are very nice mid-range headphones, and will most likely completely change your outlook in sound. Go with the 598s if you can, but they are open headphones so anybody around you will be able to hear what you're listening to.

For speakers, I'm using the Swan M10. They have very very nice sound for their price, but they are extremely difficult to find. I got mine in Massdrop.com for a little under $100. /r/audiophile will be able to give you some more recommendations for speakers, but I'm a headphone man myself so I don't know a whole lot about speakers.

Hey Guys, These headphones recently broke, and I have about £150 to spend on a set of headphones and I really want to get my first pair of good quality and really very good pair.

Source - ASUS Xonar DG PCI 5.1 Audio Card

Requirments -Mostly at home, but may walk to university as well or use at university.

Preferred type of headphones - Over-ear.

At the moment I'm looking at the [Sennheiser HD 598] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD-598-Circumaural- Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2#Ask) Versus the [HD558] (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004FEEY9A/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_3?pf_rd_p=556244467&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0042A8CW2&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1N00X3G5CMQ0A4M311GB) My question is, Are these the right headphones for me? and will I be able to tell the difference?
Ps, I game alot, and listen to a lot of liquid drum and bass!

EDIT* I've heard the HD598's are very bad with house and elctro music, (Two genres I'm quite into) Could anyone suggest headphones of similar look and feel that are good with these genres of music? ****

u/Stoneyfrog89 · 3 pointsr/headphones

Ok but gaming headsets are crap. Get these then: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/

An insane deal. Your music will sound great too. I would get them myself if they would ship to Holland, but they dont.

u/cup_of_chino · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I finally caved on those white leather Sk8 Hi's thanks to this infamous picture. They're a little more snug than the suede/canvas ones but feel a lot more substantial. I wish they made these with stitched soles, but no biggie.

Also managed to cop these Sennheiser HD 598s on Amazon's lightning deal. Can't wait to try 'em out tonight.

u/bigdoghogfrog · 3 pointsr/headphones

Here are my recommendations that will work with a V-Moda Mic:

SHP9500:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-SHP9500-Precision-Over-ear-Headphones/dp/B00ENMK1DW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457741044&sr=8-1&keywords=SHP9500

HD598:

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1457741384&sr=1-2&keywords=HD598

If you want an overall better experience/quality and have the money - X2:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-X2-27-Fidelio-Headphones/dp/B00O2Y2MZG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1457741044&sr=8-2&keywords=SHP9500

I'm sure there are other options out there using the Modmic(attaches to any headphone) but these are the ones I have experience with and would recommend using the V-Moda cable. Obviously prices will vary but those 9500's are on for a good price IMO. None of these require an aftermarket Amp(I'd get one anyway though!) as they are under 50ohm.

u/EinTheVariance · 3 pointsr/headphones

what? That's grossly overpriced:
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2

They go down to like $100 sometimes lol

u/SnowSC2 · 3 pointsr/buildapc

This will kind of depend what you use the headphones for, but with that budget you can get some solid headphones.

Sennheiser HD598s are really popular. They are well priced for the sound quality and are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

They are relatively low impedance so no amp is required but you may consider getting a DAC/AMP anyway, the cord they come with is 1/4".

u/wazups2x · 3 pointsr/Rainbow6

I own them and I definitely don't recommend them for gaming. The soundstage for them is terrible. They're also not very comfortable for long periods of time.

I recommend the Sennheiser HD 598. EXTREMELY comfortable and a much better soundstage.

u/IHasIcing · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Sennheiser HD558 is just outside of your upper bracket by $2.99 on Amazon right now. I've never heard them, but having heard the HD598 recently, the HD558 should be a great candidate for you. The only downside would be these are open-back headphones, so they will leak a bit of sound and you can hear everything as if you don't have a headphone on at all.

For a closed-back headphone at that price range, lots of people recommends Creative Aurvana Live!, Sony MDR-V6, and Jaycar Pro Monitor Headphones (which is the same as this but less expensive). If you're into modding stuff, Fostex T50RP is considered one of the best headphone for modding and there's plenty of documentation online. Granted it is a tad over your upper bracket as well, thank the modders for that :D

u/s7vn · 3 pointsr/headphones
u/LagrangianDining · 3 pointsr/promos

I'm not a fan of the M50's... they sound muddy, and hell, ever since the tsunami, those things have been like $160... (up from $110)

SONY MDR-V6 have been only at $75 since the tsunami (normally $70) and I think they sound exceptionally better, amp or no amp.

And I mean, if you want bassy sounding headphones, why don't you just try some Sennheiser headphones in the $199 range instead of blowing your money now? The damned Senn HD598 sound way better and are open so that you can enjoy clean bass and not have your ears a sweating mess.

Stop all the Audiotechnica fanboyism and look at headphones objectively. If I were obsessed about buying Japanese products, I'd bank up money to get the Denon D2000 instead. If I wanted some bassy headphones, I'd be looking at Sennheiser instead. If I wanted some fashion while getting cleaner treble, I'd be looking at AKG instead. If I wanted some light headphones with mid-range focus, I'd be looking at Grado. If I wanted some reference headphones on a budget, I'd be looking at Shure.

Come on, people, there are plenty of better headphones (from ATH themselves too! e.g. A900) to get at that price range.

Fuck the cult of M50 and their brainless fanboyism.

u/H4CK3R314 · 3 pointsr/headphones

Check on ebay or craigslist for some second hand gear, always a great way to start. I just picked these up, they're super comfortable for long use and sound great, maybe a bit too much on the low-end, but nothing a simple EQ can't fix. The Sennheiser HD 598's are also fantastic. Amazon is also having a sale on headphones right now, so you can dig through that a bit too. I would also try to test your tracks on as many systems as possible, and put an EQ on your headphones to try and get them to match the sound you are looking for

u/Hobgoblinpie · 3 pointsr/headphones

I don't know if there is a Richer Sounds in Staines, but that and Sevenoaks are generally the better chain stores for headphones. It can be a pain in the arse trying to test headphones out in the UK.

If you want to get them cheaper, you could look into amazon.fr, amazon.es, amazon.de etc. No import or customs since they're EU, but usually significantly cheaper than the UK.

For instance:

It has been at $200 for all of November until now. It has only been for sale since beginning of October so there's not a lot of history. You can use website camelcamelcamel.com to check price history of amazon products. Here's the link for this product.

If you absolutely want closed then the CAL! is your best bet, if you aren't opposed to open - which leaks sound and allows outside sound to enter - and you aren't opposed to an increase in your budget, I'd suggest the Sennheiser HD598.

u/lamycnd · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

If you happen to be in Canada you can buy these right now... highly recommend. Just get yourself a standalone mic. I don't think you can find more quality for the price (113 +tax) anywhere.

I dont know much when it comes to finding the best headset, or higher level audio for that matter. Im on the fence between the Beyerdynamic DT-990-Pro and the Sennheiser 598. I can read specs but I dont really know what it all means. If someone could point me towards the better headphone thatd be awesome but if someone could do that and tell me why, thatd be even better!

If you act quickly, you can pick up a pair of Sennheiser HD 598's from Amazon Warehouse for $100.

Then you can pick up a Schiit Modi and Magni for another $100 apiece and still have a decent amount of money left over.

u/porkchop101 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I have a pair of these Sennheiser HD598 and I couldn't be more satisfied. Very crisp sound and very comfortable you can wear them for 15 hours straight easily. If you want a gaming mic, just buy something like this, it works well and it's cheap.

u/TaangoMaango · 2 pointsr/buildapc

For the most part, gaming headsets are not worth the money.
If your budget is $200, do this :

HD 598 and a ModMic.

Alternatively, grab a pair of HD558's if you only have $150. this will blow any headset out of the water, and you can drive both of these with your motherboard. Any other questions, head over to /r/headphones.

u/ravissimo · 2 pointsr/RSOC

Sennheiser HD 598s, Turtle Beach DSS2, Antlion Modmic 4.0 and the Xbox One Chat Adapter. It's a lot of wires but the audio quality is amazing, pinpoint precision, and the mic quality is great. I also tend to have fewer party issues than most people seem to have.

If you're looking for a wireless headset, not sure what the best option for that is.

u/DankAssKush · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Audiotechnica headphones are great for gaming.

For audiotechnica i'd recommend This and This

I also recommend these by sennheiser

These will give you much better audio for gaming then a gaming headset ever could.

u/nikita2206 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Sennheiser HD598 if don't mind that your roommates will hear what you are currently listening (this is open backed headphones), but they will give you a great sound and a scene.

But really, just dig amazon for headphones and when you find ones that you would buy google some reviews on them.

u/smileyman · 2 pointsr/nfl

>Are Beats actually worth their price tag?

No. They're decent, and if you've never had a good pair of headphones before they'll sound amazing to you, but you can get much better looking and much, much better sounding headphones for the same price. If you want to drop more than $200 on a pair of headphones, try these headphones from Sennheiser.

I'm very partial to Sennheisers due to the type of music I listen to, but if you don't like the look of them you can try something like Grado. Either of the two brands will outperform the Beats by Dre at 1/3rd the cost.

u/chrisdafox · 2 pointsr/hometheater

True true. Hey, have you thought of getting Headphones? I'm not sure if the rest here will agree to this suggestion, But if you pick up a good pair of headphones and a headphone amplifier, you can listen to whatever as loud as you want without having to worry about the neighbors complaining.

I use Sennheiser HD595, but I think the updated ones are called HD598. Every once in awhile, I use them for gaming or movies so that I don't distract anyone.

u/Metalocachick · 2 pointsr/rawdenim

This. Thisthisthis. I'm right around the same age as well, also New Jersey born, raised, and currently working in, and you laid out my thoughts exactly. Although #1 on my list right now is finding a full time, rather than a private part time, music teaching job that puts me on a financial path that will allow me to pay off my student loans without so much worry, while simultaneously putting money into savings each and every month to help fund all of these goals. If the full time gig doesn't pan out this coming year the switching industries entirely night become more of a "now" then a "whenever" but fingers crossed for the former!

Edit: In regards to what would make me happy, without getting too deep about it, either these jeans http://shop.tateandyoko.com/products/naked-famous-denim-the-skinny-raw-stretch-selvedge or these open headphones http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2 would make me one giddy girl!

u/adm96 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you're looking for a headphone that you're primarily going to use to game with, I suggest looking into open-back headphones.

Assuming you DO need a mic:

Philips SHP9500 + V-Moda BoomPro

Assuming you DON'T need a mic:

Audio Technica ATH-AD700X

Though these are above your price range, do keep an eye on them. Black Friday is near, so a few are bound to drop around the 100$ range.

Sennheiser HD558

Sennheiser HD598

Keep in mind that if you can always attach a ModMic to virtually any headphone you buy. So if you decide to not go with the SHP9500, this could be your next investment.

u/materix01 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Phillips X2 which you often seen on Amazon around $200-220ish.

Sennheiser HD598 which I heard is going to be as low as $99 during Black Friday but even at $150 is great.

The AKG 7KXX is a Massdrop exclusive that pops up fairly frequently (if you request it, Massdrop will notify you when they are available again) and you can find them second hand online

I have not used the MX50x myself but they get a lot of hate here on reddit. People find them very muddy and many seem to prefer the M40x over the M50x. If you don't mind buying an amp, Sennheiser HD600 and 650 are probably the king of midfi and the most popular audiophile headphones in the community for good reason.

u/Unstizzy · 2 pointsr/JoeRogan

People have already answered your question but as a side note the headphones they are wearing are Sennheiser 280 pro's and they're hands down some the best headphones I have ever owned. I still have them but I jumped to Sennheiser HD 598 when I saw them on sale for $100 during Black Friday.

EDIT: Entered a link to the headphones mentioned.

u/memorulez · 2 pointsr/Gaming4Gamers

After I finished building my PC, I still wanted to build but had nothing else to put into it... so I went a little buck with the peripherals.

Mouse: Cyborg R.A.T 9

I got this mouse for two reasons: it's extremely ergonomic, versatile and comfortable to use and it looks like it could probably transform into a Decepticon.

Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow 2012 Ultimate

The keyboard was actually a gift, I have really enjoyed everything about it though. Besides the glossy finish that does get really mucked up, I have no complaints.

Mousepad: Razer Goliathus Extended; Control Edition

I wanted my mouse and keyboard to both be on my mousepad so I opted for this giant ass thing. It's worked really well for me, besides collecting crumbs when I snack and game...

Speakers: Audioengine A5+ Bamboo Edition

Picked these guys up for a steal, they sounds completely phenomenal. Owning these speakers kind of pushed me into the world of high end audio, which eventually lead to me getting my DAC and my headphones.

DAC: Audioengine D1 DAC & Integrated Amplifier

Got the DAC here on Massdrop for like 40% off or something, I've found that it really rounds out the low end of the speakers and gives them more transparency overall.

Headphones: Sennheiser HD598s

I can't speak highly enough of these headphones. If you're into electro or metal, these probably aren't for you merely because of the fact that they are a very neutral sounding set of cans. The low end is definitely there, but it's not pounding and overpowering like many other headphones I've owned. I still swap over to my old HD408's for anything I want to rattle my skull with.

Headphone Stand: Cheap Knockoff of the Seivking Omega stand

Same thing, off Massdrop for a good price. It's a cheap Chinese version of a very high end stand but it has actually been really nice to keep my headphones on and compliments the speakers really well.

Headset: SteelSeries Siberia v2 Frost

Very comfortable headset, and really good surround effects on them. I could always tell where Elizabeth was in Bioshock Infinite because they have great directional sound.

I'm also running 2 of these fans on my desk to keep everything nice and cool during those hot summer days. Throw some LED accent lighting, a couple of USB hubs and some monitor mounts and you've pretty much got everything that sits on my desk.

Oh, and I almost forgot the best part! It probably gets the most use of any of my peripherals =]

Hope this helps your decision! I would certainly recommend a mechanical keyboard, you'll never go back after you've tried one out and there's many inexpensive options for them out there!

Jesus, this turned into a really long comment...

https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2

I'm far from an expert, I've only bought this set of nice headphones, no others.

And they're open back, which you said you didn't exactly want.

But, the soundstage, the balance, everything about them is just perfect. You said you would rarely if ever use them in public, so I'm guessing the bleed effect of open back may not be a problem?

And at lower volumes, it can't be heard by others. I usually reach a good balance of not hearing my surroundings unless they get loud, and my surroundings not hearing me. I often turn them down a notch, have a short conversation through them, and then notch them back up.

I'm in the same genres, pretty much everything but metal and country (and I live in Texas, I can't avoid it). These do a fantastic job on all levels, I usually use a portable headphone amp but it's not needed.

And I forget I have them on. It's basically wearing velvet, never uncomfortable unless you fall asleep on the side of your head, but that'll always be uncomfortable with over ear headphones.

I'll be honest though, I have no idea what a "V shape" is, so I'm gonna go do some reading on that too.

If a smarter person comes along, probably go with what they say, but I figured I'd put my experience down for you.

u/meriorium · 2 pointsr/SuicideWatch

And you're welcome :) I'm glad I could help!

I currently use the following set up.

Headphones

Mod Mic

It's about 200 all together which is the same price as a high end headset however, it blows any "gaming" headset out of the water.

u/Rasket · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I have Sennheiser HD598's. They are the best thing i've ever heard. For 6x the price you can get some insane stuff (see: these), but I have not one single complaint about my headphones for home use. The "soundstage" is the most important thing for me in headphones, and these have one of the best i've ever heard, especially for this price. You can wear then for hours, and in gaming, you can almost shut your eyes and place noises in the physically location, x distance away from you. Of course, amazing for music and films as well.

Just note, they will be noisy for people around you, as they are not close backed (part of the trade off for it's amazing soundstage).

For a mic, I just bought a Hama, does the job. You can't really go wrong with any of the £5 ish mics either, but this one doubles up for any filming a do.

Hope that helps.

u/Rudi-Brudi · 2 pointsr/Rainbow6

PRO TIPS:
If you want the BEST SOUND for the price, DON'T buy Gaming-Headsets! They are overpriced garbage.
Buy a pair of Hi-Fi-Headphones instead and put a clip-mic on.
Look for Beyerdynamic
(http://www.amazon.de/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-PRO-250-DT-990-Pro-Kopfh%C3%B6rer/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1453367729&sr=8-2&keywords=beyerdynamic),
Sennheiser
(http://www.amazon.de/Sennheiser-HD-598-ohrumschlie%C3%9Fender-Kopfh%C3%B6rer/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1453367587&sr=8-6&keywords=sennheiser)
or AKG
(http://www.amazon.de/AKG-K612-PRO-%C2%B7-Kopfh%C3%B6rer/dp/B00DCXZY1W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1453367608&sr=8-1&keywords=akg+612)
and clip this mic on:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00029MTMQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

If you give a shit on many useless settings in your soundcard, buy a headphone amp instead. (e.g. Fiio E10) It gives you a much much better sound for your headphones at a lower price then gaming soundcards.

Oh and you don't need surround headsets with 7.1 or soundcard settings with surround simulation. Just set it to stereo and the game will simulate the surround sound by itself. You will hear the difference!

u/Old_Man_Smell · 2 pointsr/vinyl

Can't really go wrong with anything in that list. I'd add the Sennheiser HD 598 though. Especially since they are a really good deal on Amazon right now:

Gaming headphones are a gimmick. You can have better quality headphones for the same price and buy a $10 mic to clip on it.

Probably the best value you can have regarding headphones are the Sennheiser HD598 or the HD558 depending on your budget.

u/jwccs46 · 2 pointsr/realdubstep

Agreed. Nice headphones will easily get down to 25,30hz with a dedicated amp to drive them. 150 Pounds is not enough to buy nice speakers that go low enough. Case in point: I have a set of Yamaha HS5's, they ran me $400 and they're EXCELLENT monitors, but only go down to 54hz. The HS8 series goes down to 38hz but that will run you about $700.

Heck, even my JL Audio 12" sub in my car isn't really big enough to handle some dubstep. Ideally I'd have a 15" to be able to push everything cleanly enough.

Low end frequencies are LARGE, and require a LARGE speaker cone to resonate these waves. a 150pound set of computer speakers isn't going to do anything.

Buy these and get an amp with them, you'd be happier than a set of speakers - https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_2?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1482442043&sr=1-2&keywords=sennheiser+hd+598

You could get the 598 for 240 USD.

Or the 600 for only 400 USD

Or...you know...the 800 for just a little bit more.

You have to make your own call. I'm of the opinion that the difference between a $100 and $200 headphone can be very much worth the money. It might sound silly, but go with the most expensive model you can stomach. Sorry about your wallet.

u/andraflandra · 2 pointsr/headphones

u/Kerry56 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Fiio E10K is a good desktop amp/dac.

The more I look at Canadian prices, the more I am convinced the word "sale" has been deleted from Canadian English. I did find the HD 598 in your price range however.

u/Go0n · 2 pointsr/cybermonday

$99 Sennheiser HD 598's. List price is 315 but you can almost always get them for about 250. 216 right now.

If you're looking to use them in an office/travel environment the open-back design on the HD 598's are not ideal. I've used headsets for years, and have a blue yeti mic from 5 years ago. I went through 5 headsets... On the other hand my White Audio-Technica ath-m50 which I used daily with a amp for about 2 1/2 years and going. Right now the max you would be spending on this combo would be $250.

I didn't use my headphones for gaming because at first, I didn't think my Ath-m50s would sound as good as 7.1 virtual surround sound software for headsets. I thought since they were for gaming they would sound better than using headphones. After my gamecom 780 broke, I just started using my ath-m50 and it blew headsets out the water. Headsets have an irritating constant buzzing noise from their virtual surround sound. I noticed it mostly in logitech g930s and dampened in gamecom 780. Don't get headsets ever, I have spent about $450 on headsets...

As far as headphones I have right now (used with music and amp):

Sennheiser HD 598

2x White Audio-Technica ath-m50

I would go with what will last long and Sennheiser HD 598 or Audio-Technica ath-m50 headphones would be my choice.

Headsets that have broke:

Turtle Beaches x31(1 year use)

Tritton surround sound headset(6 months)

2 Logitech g930(1 year use each, but a lot of problems kept happening)

gamecom 780(1 1/2 year use with epoxy on the hinge cracks)

Also a $12 upgrade for people not saying ath-m50s are comfortable, Shure HPAEC840 Replacement Ear Cushions

Hey, I'm a noob too! They are the Sennheiser HD 598s. They are on sale right now through amazon for 47% off ($168). I can't really explain anything technical because I'm new here too; but what I can tell you is they sound awesome and they are extremely comfortable. They're pretty light weight (at least compared to my old headset) and the pads (are really soft). I would recommend them, I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge can back my claims.

u/JimmyTheDoor · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Nice battlestation! There's not much to improve but maybe more monitors for Elite: Dangerous ? :)

About the headphones I would suggest Sennheiser HD 598, they're fantastic headphones and arn't that pricey. They're actually about half price right now for 160$ so if you can spend 10$ more I would definitively get these. You can save the money by buying a Samson Meteor Mic(Yes, Samson not Samsung) instead of the blue yeti which is IMO a little overrated and bulky.

For sub 150$ cans I would look into Sennheiser HD 558. These headphones are meant to be used in a quiet environment since they're open, if you have childrens of dogs always making an awful lot of noise I would consider closed/noise canceling headphones :)

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2

But they are open-back, so a lot of sound goes in, as well as out. bear that in mind

u/motionglitch · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Sennheiser and Audio Technica are the most recommended in this sub. More accurately, the HD 598 and ATH-M50X

u/slash178 · 2 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

Yeah noise cancelling can actually make it worse, as they produce counter-frequencies, seal the ear, and direct all the sound straight to your eardrums. Instead try some open-back headphones like these for example, they provide some airflow and don't produce counter-frequencies. they don't "plug up" your ears.

u/Grimsee · 2 pointsr/headphones

I took a second look at the Head-fi purchasing guide (I find it confusing) and also bought a pair of headphones suggested to me here, the 598s. However, I hate the way they sound and want to return them, and I was wondering if anyone could make a suggestion for a replacement. I'd love to go somewhere to hear any set of headphones for myself, but no such place exists within an hour's drive for me.

Budget Originally I wrote $100 as a flexible limit, but ideally $150, flexible, but no more than $200. If it's necessary that I need an amp to make them sound good, I'd rather not buy them. I don't have the extra money to get an amp.

Source Case-integrated input/output hub.

Requirements for Isolation None.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No

Preferred Type of Headphone Preferably full-sized. On-ear makes my ears hurt.

Preferred tonal balance Unfortunately I'm not entirely sure what specific things the terms used here reference, despite the the reading I've done, but bassy and tinny sounds give me a headache.

Past headphones - I wasn't very specific the first time but here's a comprehensive list now that I'm on PC and can look for everything:

[Current problem] Sennheiser HD 598 - I didn't order from Amazon, and also yes they're authentic. They're shipped from Sennheiser but I didn't order from Sennheiser. I don't like how muffled everything sounds. I messed around with EQ and while I can make voices sound clearer, any more silky sort of sounds sound tinny.* I noticed that cymbals tended to sound clear, but guitar and synth sounded like it was played through a towel.

Skullcandy UPROCK S5URDZ-074 - Everything sounded tinny or muffled. Everything.

AxentWear - Felt like listening to music through a pillow or in a box. Everything sounded distant and heavy. Also they're heavy headphones and made my neck hurt like all hell. I still own them. I still don't like them.

Various pairs of Gummys, more Gummys, and Skullcandy Ink'd. They all sounded fine, aside from bass sounding nearly non-existent. They were clear and I liked that at least. But I want to upgrade in hopes of doing my hearing some justice and lessen the chance that I'll give myself extreme tinnitus.

Preferred Music - I listen to most genres, but there's a specific sound that I enjoy.* Specific examples, some with time-stamps:

The synth roll sounds at within the first 10 seconds

The synth alternating note sound. Sort of like ABCBCBC. Sorry, I don't study music so I don't know what they are

The synth in the beginning

All of this song. Everything sounds muffled

The beginning sounds here

The guitar at any point in this song

Sorry I can't use proper terms for anything.

It's nice that I can finally hear the bass in many songs, but I hate that I have to trade in clarity. Also, the bass can be a bit thumpy and excessive. I want to hear it, but I don't want my brain to be rattled in the process.

The sounds I like the most tend to be very synthy. I actually love the sound of violin for example. My absolute favorite sound is the first two seconds of this song. Currently listening on the 598s. Sounds muffled.

*The silky sound that violin has or that sharp, sort of bouncy sound that synth has. I also love electric guitar, especially that within Djent. I'm a sucker for that sort of complex/conflicting sound.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - If detail is all those synthy and violin sounds I like, then more detail?

Do you know if you want a full-size keyboard, tenkeyless or 60%? The KUL-87 is a really good tenkeyless board with a standard layout. Also, WASD makes both full-size and tenkeyless high quality boards and you can completely customize the board color, each keycap color, choice of Cherry MX switches, and even the font and placement on the keys. Solid board all the way around. If you want a 60%, I can recommend the Leopold FC660M as I own one and it is a really good board. The Pok3r is one of the more popular 60% boards.

Check out /r/MechanicalKeyboards for more info on keyboards.

For a headset I would recommend getting a good pair of regular headphones like the Sennheiser HD598, and maybe a headphone amp like from Schiit. Then either get something like a Modmic or even better, a standalone microphone like the Audio Technica AT-2020 or Blue Yeti.

Razr products aren't inherently bad but for the price there are better alternatives.

u/sfw_account_no_boobs · 2 pointsr/headphones

You wan't the Sennheiser HD598SEs. Directly in your price range and good for what you want to do. These are open back headphones, other people may be able to hear what you are listening to depending on your volume. If you don't like the idea of that, get the 598C's which are closed, so people won't be able to hear what you are listening to as long as you aren't blasting it.

These are some of the best intro headphones you can get in that price range (literally each $150) and they go on sale sometimes for ~$100 if you can wait. IMO you should get the open ones if you are using them for listening to music.

u/SwellJoe · 2 pointsr/videos

I'm not the best person to ask. I use, and like, studio headphones; I use them outside of the home studio for DJing and live audio, but don't take them on the bus or train or plane (I use a mid-range set of ear buds for that). Sennheiser makes some quite nice phones that are designed to be acceptable looking outside of the studio. The HD598 aren't bad looking, and they are quite good headphones from an audio perspective, though they are pricey...I suspect you'd be paying quite a bit extra for the appearance.

But, they're a lot less than the $300 Beats model and I'm reasonably confident they are better headphones, even without having done an A/B blind listening test.

Hey /r/Headphones! I just had the opportunity to pick up a pair of Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones for free, so I decided to go all out and finally join the audiophile realm. I bought the Moov Mic (which was also suggested here I believe) and attached it to the headphones to make a quasi-"gaming headset" for PC gaming. The FiiO E10k arrived today, and I was blown away by the difference between my motherboard's onboard sound and this little thing. Amazing stuff!

u/Manhand · 2 pointsr/Music

Sennheiser makes an awesome product.

I bought the HD 598 last year and I can honestly say they are a phenomenal product.

The ear pieces are so plush and soft. They remain comfortable even after extended use. I used to feel pain around my ears after extended gaming sessions with my last headset, but never with the Sennheisers.

After I bought my first pair of Sennheisers I felt it was my obligation to go back and listen every song I've ever heard because they sounded so crisp!

The quality is insane! Just be sure you arn't buying knock-offs because they are often counterfeited

When you're looking into headphones, you should at least determine what you personally like audio wise and what are you going to use the headphones for. Do you like a lot of bass or do you prefer clearer audio? Also will you be using them to play only stereo content or would you be utilising a wide soundstage?

If your definition of a "PCMR headset" is something like a comfortable fit with adjustable leds that screams gaming, I'd recommend Steelseries siberia 650 for example.

HOWEVER, the quality of the "gaming" headsets is pretty much shit compared to what you can get with the same money outside of the gaming franchises. Especially the built in mics in gaming headsets have pretty terrible quality in all of the models on the market compared to proper microphones.

Personally I don't care about the leds and stuff and enjoy good quality audio, so I went with quality AKG studio headphones I already owned and bought an Antlion modmic 4.0 to go with them. I've been very pleased with this setup and the best part is, you can choose the quality headphones that suit you best and slap that quality mic onto any model or brand.

If I didn't already have my AKG 272HD's and had to buy the entire setup, I would probably have gone with the modmic + Sennheiser HD 558. That setup has a pretty amazing price to quality ratio and most of all it's comfortable and sounds great. To go even further the Sennheiser HD 598's are basically the same headphones but with a better soundstage and less bass. Just my 2 cents.

TL;DR: Would seriously recommend to make your own quality headset out of a modmic and some good quality studio headphones for the price of a lower quality "gaming" headset.

u/sombrereptile · 2 pointsr/StardewValley

They're Sennheiser HD 598's, which are actually open-back and allow a lot of sound in and out. Amazing headphones without a doubt, but not noise canceling at all.

u/The_Shmef · 2 pointsr/Bass

Bigger drivers that have a better low frequency response. When I headphones practice, I use either in-ear (so the ear-plug/monitor type) or Sennheiser HD 598's [$150]. The in-ears don't need as much power and since they're so close to your ear drum you can pull a lot from such a low power, small driver. The Sennheiser's are a little on the flat, open side so your mileage may vary because you need something decent to power them. I know that it's isolated cousin, the Sennheiser HD280Pro [$99] is also a great tracking style headphone (isolated, clear, not super hyped and pretty comfortable for long sessions.) Can't speak for the B3 but most of the Zoom stuff I've seen at that pricepoint seems to be okay. They made a lot of cheap garbage back in the day, but some of their processors now are pretty cool.

u/SleepPellest · 2 pointsr/radiohead

Sennheiser 598s will change your life without totally breaking the bank. Think they cost a lot more when I got my (better-sounding-than-ever) pair five or six years ago.

u/TPGryff · 2 pointsr/TagProIRL

Sennheiser HD650- music heaven but expensive. At this point though, it's only going to sound as good as the quality of the music files you have. Amp semi-required

Sennheiser HD598- step below the HD650s. Equal treble and mids, not much bass but these are the headphones that makes you appreciate the clear sound without it.

Klipsch X10- very treble-y, it sometimes hurts, but if these weren't the clearest sounding in-ear headphones I've ever had I don't know what. Fairly wide soundstage. I've washed them twice and they still work.

MEE M-Duos- These are the cheapest of the bunch. I was pleasantly surprised at the sound of them. As clean and clear sound as the HD598 but with much more bass. My favorite tbh

Up-front warning: I'm in a bit of a rut when it comes to brand loyalty so take everything I say as a recommendation of something to try on rather than outright buy sight unseen (though that should really be the rule for any audio gear.)

The Sennheiser HD-380 pro is one of my all-time favorites from a comfort and isolation perspective. They're circumnaural, cheap (relatively anyway) and have a fairly neutral response.

If your focus is gaming, the Game Zero may be up your alley. It's very similar ergonomically to the 380, but includes a mic. (Unfortunately the mic is not removable.)

If you're more fashion conscious you may be interested in the Momentum. These things are probably one of the few I've ever tried that beat my 380s in comfort (the other notable one on my mind being bose's QC15.) These guys come in multiple colors, so you get lots of choices.

If you're willing to take the plunge into open back (less/non isolating) the HD 558 has a nice wide soundstage while still having the comfort of the 380. These are likely the least in line with your requirements, but I still highly recommend trying a pair on if there are any shops around you that carry them.

Since you mentioned gaming, I'll also drop mention of the antlion modmic. They are constantly having inventory issues (can't keep up with demand) but it's an interesting product. New version is on the way.

Here are some from different brands that are incredible:

Sennheiser:

HD 518 (Cheap and effective)

HD 558

HD 598

Grado:

SR80i (Great bang for buck, but Grado's cup style may be uncomfortable)

SR125i

SR325i (Closed)

Beyerdynamic:

DT770 (Pretty standard audiophile pair here, also they are closed)

There are plenty more, more than I can list, I just focused on affordable and great sounding headphones, there are also plenty more affordable headphones from brands like AudioTechnica, Shure, Koss, and many others.

u/thewxdude · 2 pointsr/CFBOffTopic

That's a pretty solid starting point. I'm a Sennheiser fanboy so I'd recommend starting out with the 598HD (they have a regular black variant if you're looking for something less flashy.) These clock in around $150. These don't necessarily need an amp and they'll sound fine without one, but if you're willing to go the extra mile, an amp will help bring out that extra oompf out of the cans. You won't need anything super fancy like a tube amp or anything, something like this would do just fine, though it would put you a touch above your limit.

This is just a jumping off point but I think a setup like this is solid. I'll be upgrading to 600/650HD or something comparable in a couple months myself.

u/tezkr · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Yea I'm looking to get a pair of normal headphones without the mic as well. HD598's are currently 43% off on Amazon.

I would love to have the HD650's but can't bring myself to spend that much yet.

u/kare_kano · 2 pointsr/headphones

I'm not really sure if you mean it about neutral, so I'm going to make two recommendations.

Sennheiser HD598 is an open back design (but not major leakage), with a warm tint to the sound. Fair bass, well defined, but not a lot of impact (ie. it's not the "punch you in the ear" kind, these are not basshead headphones). Doesn't need an amp. I'm recommending it in case by "neutral" you actually mean "all rounder", which are fine for all kinds of music.

If you really mean neutral seriously, as in, headphones that add no artificial coloration to the sound, then Fostex T50RP MK3 would be perfect. Just be warned that really neutral sound can get a bit of getting used to and may seem "flat", especially when coming from cheaper headphones, which heap tons of bass and artificial flavoring on the music. Otherwise, the T50RP have a very clear, clean sound. They're a bit over budget (~$160). They're semi-closed, so decent isolation, removable cable. FWIW they're actually an orthodynamic headphone, aka planar magnetic, as opposed to the dynamic drivers that most headphones use, which helps to provide a more detailed sound. They will sound even better when using an amp, so if he's getting one that's good to know.

u/KyleRob07 · 2 pointsr/headphones

The Sennheiser HD 598s have a larger soundstage, so if you play shooters I would bump up to them.

u/Not_enough_yuri · 2 pointsr/DestinyTheGame

Thanks! And now I'm blushing.

As for the quality of the headphones for gaming alone, they get by on more than just the merit of being good for music, too. I myself use a pair of HD598s for gaming (similar to the HD558), and they provided far better immersion, response, and most importantly comfort, than the Turtle Beach XP500s I had bought before ever had. I guess the bottom line is that if you're looking for features, you'll probably want get the gaming headset that has all of the features you want, but if sound quality alone is your top priority, go with a pair of headphones that can produce what you want to hear, as they all have bifferent qualities. As long as you do an ample amount of research before spending your money, you'll be happy with the product you get, and that's really all that matters in the end.

u/ScaryPillow · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Go for it. These are great. Don't get closed-back it makes the sound stage sound way smaller and makes the music feel less full. Closed is only really good if you don't want to annoy people in the same room as you while you listen.

HD 558 and HD 598 are almost identical sounding but 598s are more "premium". You can decide which one you want for $50 more.

I made a separate post for this first before a kind user pointed me here so bear with me if you already saw this.

I've been hovering on the edge of deciding whether to invest in good headphones for awhile now and I need the final word in whether or not to do it. I own a pretty powerful desktop and do a lot of gaming; I also have hundereds of gigs of music and enjoy listening to all kinds daily. Quality is pretty important to me and I love it when a song can fully immerse me. I listen to many different genres ranging from alternative/rock to electronic/ambient. I currently own a pair of Grado SR 60i's right now and they do the trick for casual listening but I feel like I could be getting more. I did some reading and based on some reviews I picked out some new headphones along with some peripherals to enhance my listening experience. I would really appreciate it if you fellas would weigh in on my choices and let me know if I am making the right decision with my purchase.

Hey! I'm considering purchasing either the Sennheiser HD 598 or the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7GM. My budget is $190 and I can get the Audio-Technicas very slightly used for about that much. My only problem is I wouldn't be able to purchase a warranty with them. Has anyone who owns them ever noticed or heard of any problems with them? Or have any advice regarding these two? Are the Audio-Technicas significantly better in sound quality?

Basically if anyone who's tried both can chime in, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Budget - $300, $350 max

Source - Most likely an internal sound card.

Requirements for Isolation - None.

Preferred tonal balance - I'm not sure, so I'm going to go with balanced.

Past headphones - Logitech G930, Corsair Vengences 1400

Preferred Music - Rock, folky music with a lot of acoustic guitars and banjos etc.

Miscellaneous - I game a lot. I play a little of everything (except for MOBAs and RTS). I love my G930's 7.1 surround sound (they use Dolby Headphone 7.1 Virtual Surround) and I pretty much need 7.1 surround when I game.

Right now I'm looking at Sennheiser HD 598 (omg so sexy) and an Asus Xonar DSX, + a modmic

Any help or advice would be much appriciated!

Edit: ah just remembered you said the price. I think I would get these. Very interested now. Are they durable / long lasting? Ever had an issue where you were annoyed by open back? Will they be fine with a mic?

These are on sale right now if you want to maybe get a portable amp and go with these. They're great headphones, but that being said, they really need a quiet environment to shine. If you're gonna constantly be in a loud environment, the noise canceling along with audio quality on the Bose QC15's are worth it to me ($300). Granted the QC15's don't have the greatest audio quality (but I still personally think it's pretty good), I use them to help tune out whatever's around me. You can get a lot better audio quality with $350, but you won't have the noise canceling.

EDIT: Sorry I mistyped this earlier, I have the Bose QC 15's. The one's you'll see a lot of people wearing at airports.

If you aren't worried about your sound leaking out, you can get some open backed headphones, for example the Sennheiser HD598. You will be able to hear people talk to you, but your music will also leak out of them.

u/PootisHoliday · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

>Hello people of the PC master race

I'm not much of a representative, but hello to you as well.

>Firstly I'm looking for some headphones that connect to the computer via USB port

Please no. That will limit your quality to whatever DAC the manufacturer wants to put in, which is usually sub-par.

What I'd recommend is getting yourself a DAC on a budget, like this, or just simply plug a pair of cans into your built-in mobo DAC.

>separate volume sliders for chat and the game itself.

What? Like using a slider for one application and one for another?

>Secondly I just want the headphones to come with a good quality mic, and or course, pretty good quality audio.

You will get the better bang for your buck with a pair of headphones, and a stand-alone microphone.

>My budget ATM is $60

Might have to eat Ramen for another few weeks, then.

If you would like decent gaming gear, you might have to expand your budget a little bit.

A decent (^^as ^^in, ^^over-the-par ^^quality, ^^not ^^audiophiliac ) pair of headphones start at around $150, (like the HD598s on sale, which are a steal great for the price right now.)

If you would like a good mic with that, you might want to look at the ModMic.

Although the price right now is a tad bit high, it will really benefit you in the long run.

If I have misinformed information, or had missed something, please let me know.

edit: tfw I've typed up something large and someone else had posted something earlier. Maybe I'll recycle this later?

Personally I'd go with a $100-$150 pair of Sennheiser headphones. My HD280 Pros have lasted me since my freshmen year of college (2006 I believe), and they're still in great shape. Audiotechnica is also a great choice (Sennheiser and them are pretty much the best in the business), but I personally prefer Sennheiser's sound signature.

Sennheiser HD 518s, geared for more electronic music, far better than Beats, Open Ear for beautiful sound

~$70

Sennheiser HD 558s, balanced all around, improvement over the 518s but less geared for electronic music. Open ear

~$100

Sennheiser 598s, practically similar to the 558, just further improved for more accurate sound reproduction

~$150

Sennheiser HD 380 PRO, closed back, extremely good sound reproduction

~$100

Audio-Technica M50x, closed back, one of the most popular Audiophile headphones on the market

~$150

2 Closed Back, 3 Open Back. As you can see, I strongly prefer open for the much cleaner and natural sound, but closed back is still an option.

I mean, if your looking for, "audio tuned to only emphasize the very highs and the very lows", then yeah, maybe beats are for you, however, that doesn't make them of higher quality at all, they are literally doing the opposite of what you would want in a headphone, it's just that you would apparently prefer it. If you had a headphone that was completely flat, then you could hear the exact amount of bass the artist was intending. For example, I have Dual-Subs in the back of my car inside a ported box. If I listen to a deadmau5 song on those with the bass settings tuned way up, I'll get an overpowering bass that basically shakes the car and drowns out the rest of the music. However, when I go home and listen to the song on say my HD518s, I'll get to listen to the song as a whole, and the bass is represented exactly at the level it should be for the song, where you can feel it, you can hear it, but it doesn't drown out the rest of the song.

u/triobot · 1 pointr/makemychoice

I would stay away from a gaming headset and get audiophile headphones. The difference in quality is phenomenal.

Examples include AKG 550s and Sennheiser 598

u/Justbrowsingstuff · 1 pointr/headphones

Been doing research and want o jump into getting good phones to use at home. I like the idea of a large sound stage but also like teh idea of closed backs to really pump bass. I'll be listening to a lot of genres, but mostly Jazz, Blues, lots of Hip Hop and Rap, and some Classic Rock. I love listening to the Doors, Nina Simone, rapper Nas Wu-Tang Clan, Led Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused, Black Sabbath. LOVE house of the rising sun by the Animals to give an idea of the sounds I'll be hoping to listen to. I'm looking for the most versatile head phones that would give me good play back and sound the crispest over the widest range of genres.

After my research I'm deciding between the pricey but well regarded Sennheiser HD 598 and the more affordable but good bang for your buck Audio-Technica ATH-M30x. I'm just curious if I should shell out the extra $ for the 598 or settle for the AT M30x. The Senn have wider freq range and are open so better sound stage but are more $ the AT are closed and have a narrower freq but are less $ wondering if anyone has any points that might put me over the edge on one of them. Thanks.

My current peripherals:

Mouse: Logitech G502

Headphones: Sennheiser HD 598. I prefer the open cans, but that's just me. I also only paid $100 for them.

Keyboard: Corsaid K70 Blue Switches. Switch color is completely up to you, but I would definitely go with a mechanical keyboard of some type. The K70 is really a solid choice.

Microphone: Blue Yeti: Blackout. I won't really recommend the microphone at its current price unless sound quality is incredibly important to you. The only reason I got mine was because I got an amazing deal on it.

I don't have any speakers yet. I live in an apartment, so I like to keep things on the quiet side.

If you want to buy a set be happy and not have to buy another set of cans I recommend the Sennheiser HD 598 for gaming. You can get a microphone to attach to the set of cans. Here is a decent list of reviews on the subject. I currently use the 598's for mine and the sound stage on these things is beyond amazing. Currently I am using crap onboard (limitation of current build) and the sound is stellar so you using a decent Xonar card with the dac/amps on those will sound even better. I can't wait to build my other ring and get the STX pumping out the audio to my cans.

I'm trying to figure out a good setup to work on my PS4 and PC. Let me just start off by saying I know very little about headphones and amps, soundcard thingys and such but I do know that the PS4 controller jack uses bluetooth and has compressed audio and headsets sound worse when using it. Anyways, I'm trying to figure out if this setup will work.
I want to use a Blue Snowball Mic
with Senneheiser 598
and Turtle Beach DSS to get the performance out of the 598's. Has anybody tried a setup like this? Would this even work? Is there a better/easier option to have a good desktop mic + headphones? If I'm able to put the snowball directly into the PS4 and then use the headset with the DSS plugged into the console then that would be perfect. Thanks for helping me figure this out.

I'm also strongly considering something like these just to save money and have a simpler setup.

u/Silent_Gamerz · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hi r/audiophiles!

Context/Background:

I'm an FPS gamer (and plan to start streaming) and am building a new silent gaming rig! I currently have some terrific headphones and am looking to find some minimal bass 2.0 Speakers for my sit/stand desk. Parts being considered are below. Questions at end. Thank you! Also, regarding "minimal bass", that is an absolute requirement - unless it's easily adjustable. Speakers are intended for casual gameplay/music, whereas headphones are used competitively (e.g. pinpointing reloads/footsteps)

Currently Using (don't plan to replace):

  1. Headphones: Sennheiser HD 598 and Sennheiser HD 599 (they're open-back, btw)

    Purchasing Plans:

  2. Sound Card or AMP/DAC: NONE
    1. Motherboard Built-In Sound Card: Z390 Taichi Ultimate
      1. 7.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC1220 Audio Codec)
      2. Supports Purity Sound 4 & DTS Connect
  3. Speakers: Maybe Klipsch R-41PM or DIY?
  4. Microphone: Audio-Technica's 2020 USB+
  5. Microphone Boom Arm: Rode PSA1
  6. Microphone Shock Mount: Rode PSM1
  7. Microphone Pop Filter: VocalBeat WindScreen
  8. UPS/SP: Cyber Power CP1500PFCLCD (1500VA/900W, 10 outlets, AVR) - mentioned, due to interference potential
  9. Wall Acoustic Panels: DIY + Satin Fabric
  10. Window Sound Proofing: DIY Window Inserts, else possibly Acoustic Curtain (12 lbs, adhesive/velcro wall backed)

Questions: <in order of greatest importance to me, if you're time crunched>

  11. What 2.0 speakers would you recommend, given my serious bass concerns?
  12. Does any of the equipment I mention really "need" an AMP/DAC (or independent sound card) to enjoy the quality of it? Also, again, I'm personally not an audiophile, so please bear that in mind!
  13. Am I a fool to go for a windscreen instead of a traditional pop filter? I'd prefer to not have something obtrusive in my face while gaming and I do have some resonance concerns I'm still trying to resolve in-room (which leads to next two questions).
  14. Sound Proofing: I linked above the best DIY video I could find, but if anyone has a superior window insert solution, I'm DYING to find out. Or, if people think the super heavy velcro-adhesive backing curtains will suffice hold a candle to the window inserts, that would be great to know, too!
  15. Sound Deadening: I'm planning on the DIY linked above, as opposed to traditional acoustic foam cut-outs, given the reasoning explained in the video (if you didn't watch, it purports ~10x superior deadening, aids proofing further, and is far cheaper). Are there any flaws with my approach, before I go and churn out a dozen of these in a maker space? Granted, I understand one can "over-deaden" a room, if not careful.

I've heard that the M50x's aren't all that comfortable for long periods of wear. I'm a fan of Sennheiser's HD598s. They just recently released an update to them in the HD599s, but those are about $250 right now unfortunately.

u/dumpstergirl · 1 pointr/classicalmusic

I did extensive of research a while back, but sadly don't have it all with me now. I still have a bunch of top picks saved on my Amazon wish list tho:
http://amzn.com/w/8LC7V99WN71H

The long and short of it is that I really like Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser, Bose is way overpriced for anything but their noise-canceling ability, and open-air is optimal for classical. I, however, wanted closed or semi-closed 'phones because I wanted to blast opera and Rachmaninoff loud without the person in the cube 2 feet away from me being any the wiser for it. Open air has a great deal of leakage.

In grad school I was using these relatively cheap 'phones mainly because the noise canceling worked amazingly well on the noisy, crowded shuttle bus. They were pretty rugged but with enough abuse eventually broke on me. I can't speak for any of the higher-quality headphones on my list as I have to wait 'till I get a job before I can buy a set.

All the 'phones linked in the above list were ones I set apart during hours of research on sites like head-phi looking for classical/opera 'phones.

Note that the Grados are more rock-type phones but the punchy bass can be pretty nice for classical. However, they were less comfortable than other phones, so if you wear them all day (as I do) people recommended installing the Sennhieser ear pads (also on the list).

Let me know what you get and your opinions on it; the feedback will help me decide what to get someday!

EDIT: Out of that list the favored picks were:

Sennheiser 598

AKG 701

Beyerdynamic 440

u/aabeba · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

The Sennheiser HD598 were on sale last year for $99 and the HD598 SE were on sale a week ago for the same price. They're probably the best you can get for that price, and they generally sound loud enough without an amp. Lot of other solid stuff between $50 and $100, you should check out /r/headphones if you're interested. But if you want my advice, you can skip a lot of the entry-level stuff in favor of a nice 2.1 setup with a pair of monitors and a subwoofer (if you have the space and money and can afford to play music through speakers).

u/omrcz · 1 pointr/headphones

Hey guys, before I start I just want to thank you for taking the time.

Budget: $200 (whatever cheaper than this for same quality does the trick

Source: Desktop, laptop, phone, ipod

Isolation: None required. Comfort is more important

Type: Anything but IEMs and buds. I have cheap ones.

Tonal Balance: I honestly don't know what I want here as I'm new to this concept. But some booms and bass without losing mid and highs would be nice

Past Experience: Skullcandy {Skullcrushers, Hesh, Lowriders, Smoking Buds, Jackets, cheap buds} Bose { 1 closed over ear active noise isolation} Steelseries {Siberia V3 and some neckband model I can't remember} and I borrowed some gaming headsets.

Music: I listen to everything but I'm going to be mostly focused on EDM, DnB, Trance, Indie/Altern, R&B, Jazz and Hip Hop. So something like the bass on this
I'm going to be listening to stuff like this:

Roosevelt

Arctic Monkeys

Cruz

Miike Snow

Diplo

Subformat

Improvements: The comfort of the Siberia V3 but hopefully with a less mediocre sound and something better than my Skullcandy experiences. Though I must say my cheap $20 dollar Skullcandy IEMs sound better than the V3.

Location: Northern Virginia, US.

I've read the guides (that are 4 month old) and I came with these options:

Sennheiser HD 558

Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Sennheiser HD 598
I'm more inclined to this because of looks

AKG Q 701

Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pro Headphones (250 Ohm)

Grado Prestige Series SR225e

If anybody has any recommendations on which one I should pick out of this or even recommend something else that'd be nice, since the guides are 4 month old and lots of things come out in 4 months. I also noticed nobody mentioned Shure.
In a future I'd love to learn more about DACs and buy stuff to build my setup.

u/happybadger · 1 pointr/todayilearned

Most BT ones I've seen are really bass-heavy and marketed at poppier tastes. I stick with my Sennheiser 598s because even if they're inconvenient they really stress a clean soundstage and bright highs, which make them really great for the kind of music I like.

u/vubbz · 1 pointr/headphones

Ive been checking AKGs and some Beyerdynamics as well but im not very knowledgeable when it comes to heaphones so any pointers or recommendations would be much appreciated. Driving them wont be an issue (I have a focusrite Scarlette), I plan to use them for gaming and some music if that helps.

u/Happypartyfuntime · 1 pointr/AskReddit

It probably depends on the type you buy. My fiance listens to metal, and he said it actually improved the sound quality. You could hear sounds that were difficult to discern with the boes he previously owned.

I just looked on amazon, he has these ones:
http://www.amazon.ca/Sennheiser-HD-598-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343610142&sr=1-2

He also really liked them because the ear pieces have that sort of velvet material on them, as opposed to foam, so it should last longer. Also, they're open-ear so you won't be damaging your ears (as badly) because the sound can travel out.

u/tomasz55 · 1 pointr/audiophile

IMO, it's worth the extra 50 for the Sennheiser HD598. I listen to plenty of jazz on mine and they are incredibly accurate. Also: most comfortable headphones I've ever worn. Sennheiser HD598 are selling for $147-$158 on Amazon right now. I'd pick them over the SPH9500/ATH700x. Wider soundstage, good detail, nice balanced sound, detachable cable, etc. Good deal at the price.

u/pikes · 1 pointr/buildapc

I use it as an DAC for my headphones (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452112290&sr=8-1) and with my speakers as well (which are really old but still sound great) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836119105)

Almost all of my mp3s are stereo 320s and I'm not using any source audio better than that (for example, blu-ray audio or 5.1 or anything like that).

I'm considering just selling the card on ebay and going the route of using an external USB DAC for my headphones. I'm wondering if I would even be able to tell the difference between simply onboard audio and an external DAC with my headphones.

Hey guys! As a first-time buyer, I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Budget + Source - $200 or so, more or less | iPhone 6s, PS4, Macbook Pro.

Requirements for Isolation - Not really any.

Preferred Type of Headphone - Comfort is king!

Past headphones - On-Ear Sol Republic Tracks HD are the only pair of recognizable headphones I've owned. I have no issues with the top part of the band, but my ears start hurting after about an hour or less, which makes them basically only good for the gym at this point.

Preferred Music + Tonal Balance - Pop, hip-hop, rock, and classical music are my favorites. I love bass, but love listening to classical as well.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up? - Anything that sounds better than my Sol Republics and is miles ahead in terms of comfort. Beyond using them for music, it would be great if they could be used when gaming on a PS4.

I've been considering the Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH, the Sennheiser HD 598, the AKG Pro Audio K612PRO, the AKG Q 701 Quincy Jones Signature, the V-MODA Crossfade M-100, the Beyerdynamic DT line, and finally the Beyerdynamic 709093 Custom One Pro Plus which I was almost dead-set on buying, but figured I'd post here first. Thank you for taking the time to read this, any help (or suggestions) would be greatly appreciated!

Sennheiser HD598

Audio Technica M50x

I'm leaning towards that M50x, but I'm open to any recommendations. I'm going to be using them for getting lost in music of many genres, namely rock, psychedelic, folk, shoegaze, hip hop, edm, jazz, ambient, etc.

One concern I have is that it seems a lot of people recommend getting a portable amp, I don't really want to have to carry one if I can avoid it.

Budget: I'd say $200 is the most I'd spend, I'd like to spend less.

Comfort is important to me because I'll have them on during work for several hours at a time.

I feel like this is all very vague, but I'm interested in anyone's feedback.

And now I have a weirder question.... what is so special about the special addition?

On the amazon page is says that the special edition is compatible on almost all devices, such as phones and the burl wood accent one doesn't say that. Does this mean that the burl wood one won't work on my phone (im mostly using it for gaming on my pc anyways but it would be nice to use when im travelling)???? Also, why is the special edition $20 MORE but the list price for it is only $200, while the list price for burl wood is $380?

I am just really confused now as this will be my first "real" headphones and want to make sure I am getting what I am paying for and not missing out on anything.

THANKS A LOT :)

EDIT: ALSO FOR SOME REASON ON THE CAD WEBSITE THE SPECIAL EDITION COSTS $20 MORE BUT ON THE USA AMAZON SITE IT IS $2 CHEAPER THAN THE WOOD ONE. But just making sure, what are the differences between them?

I have the open back ones (https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1481524504&sr=1-3&keywords=hd+598). Thanks for the suggestion! Do you have a suggestion on which amp/dac I should get? Preferably below $100 since it is for casual listening + gaming although I won't leave out anything more expensive if it's a better bang for the buck.

I'm looking at the Sennheiser HD598 + AntLion ModMic. Which AntLion ModMic should I choose? Too my shame I've always bought gaming headsets so I've never used an attachable microphone. Are they really good? Should I go for the omnidirectional or the noise cancelling one? I would mostly use it for gaming anyways.

Bonus question: Open back headsets or closed back? What's the difference?

u/3agl · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

M50x. Honestly some of the better headphones I have ever owned. They're not amazing for glasses, but that's why I recommend alternatives too.

As an alternative, tons of people also recommend HD598s for a lot of comfort and frequency response reasons.

While the clouds are okay, their audio drivers are less the focus of the product so you're going to get significantly worse drivers for the money.

Go for a modmic or some other microphone setup, as you can get a lot more customization from your setup (like what we usually praise pc for) if you don't get something prepackaged.

Seconded. I've heard great things about the HD 598's. Depends on his budget though.

Sennheiser 598 vs 598 SR?
What is the difference between the two models. Ive read that they are pretty much the same but the SR are a renewed model, the only problem with that is that the 598 are 260$ and the Sr are 170$ and i am confused with the pricing and do not know which one to purchase (i will use them for gaming and listening to music along with a modmic). What kind of music does she like? I got my girlfriend a Grado SR325e for her birthday, used in like new condition (with a set of the larger G-Cush pads) they are a pretty great price to performance for headphones you can drive optimally out of a cell phone.

The Grado SR60e is good, I'd recommend you get G-Cush pads as well for comfort.

The Sennheiser Momentum isn't bad and comes with a lot of color options since you want something feminine.

The Sennheiser HD598 is a great price to performance but isn't very portable, and is open back.

A little more information may lend more ideas though.

If you change your mind and get gaming headset, look up the hyper x Cloud 2, those are nice quality and arent all that expensive.

As for regular headphones, the ones i see recommended most are the Sennheiser HD 598, those are apparently REALLY good. Amazon reviews confirm that.

could be an allergic reaction to the leather? looking at a picture of the hd280 (never had em) they seem to have pads that are slightly plasticky. the type found on lower end headphones that end up flaking easily (seem to be the same material as the pads on my old hd201).

as i mentioned in my original reply, there are some lines of headphones you might want to look at that have velour pads (cloth. look at bottom pad in image http://cdn.head-fi.org/c/c0/c0e779be_KNlpF.png ).

beyerdynamics premium line has that and doesnt clamp hard, so its very comfortable. thing is, their low impedance versions (dont need an amp) are expensive. sennheiser has a few that might work for you unless you also have a reaction to cloth pads.

I'm going to get either the AD900x, HD598, or the Q701 for gaming and music (Leaning towards the Q701s). With whatever i choose i will also probably be getting the Fiio E10K. Now the main part i'm asking about is that i'm coming from a Turtle Beach PX22 headset. The inline amplifier on this i LOVE. As you can see in these pictures, the amplifier features bass and treble adjustment, game volume and chat volume are separate and independently adjustable, I can hear my own voice as i speak, and i can play music into the auxiliary port in it. So i'm wondering if it would be wise to setup all this in a way to integrate both this amp and the E10K. My current idea is to plug the E10K into the computer, then the PX22 amp into the E10K and obviously the headphones into the PX22 amp. So will this setup work? if not, is there any amp that offers a lot of the features the PX22 amp does? Thank you

I have a Sennheiser HD-555. It started to crack a few months after I got it, and one arm fell off after about a year of lite use. I've been keeping it together with duct tape, but now the other arm is about to fall off. I'm considering the following:

u/Rarity34 · 1 pointr/headphones

Hi there. I’m looking for some headphones that would be great for gaming and music. My budget is anything under £280, although I can stretch the budget. I’m located in the UK.

I currently use an Astro A40 headset, however after general wear and tear the cable has started coming loose at the ends which causes the audio to cut out at irregular intervals. I have these paired with an Asus Xonar DX soundcard for PC and I also have an Astro Mixamp for gaming on consoles.

I’d like some headphones with natural sound and good balance as I’m not too keen on the current trend of Bass heavy products. Over-Ear design is an absolute must for me and I’m not too worried on how it looks, so long as it’s comfortable and not too bulky. I have no preference on isolation.

I’ve been through various crappy Turtle Beach sets, Tritton 5.1 Pro and now my current headset which does the job well but I kind of want to take a step up into audiophile grade hardware. I’ve been looking mainly at Sennheiser and Audio-Technika and some products that look interesting are the HD 650, the HD 598 and the ATH-AG1.

If it’s of any help my preferred music is Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock, Synthpop and I also have a big soft spot for Symphonic Metal. As for gaming, I’m really not too worried about surround sound capabilities because I can use the mixamp to simulate 5.1/7.1 surround sound on consoles, and on the PC, I enable Dolby Headphone.

Any suggestions will be very helpful and I thank you for your help in advance.

I have been looking to buy a new pair of headphones. I have been looking at m50's and v-moda m100 but I saw this sale today.
I listen mostly to rock/blues I will be listening from my computer without sound card and amp/dac and my phone (One plus One)

What do you think should i go for the sennheiser or the m50/m100?

u/Aevileon · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget - Around $150 give or take $10.

Source - Mainly my phone. Sometimes my computer.

Isolation - As much as possible. I plan on using these in public.

Wireless/Charging - Wired (preferably less than 5 feet) without the need to charge, please. (I do not want to have to charge my headphones.)

Type - Full size closed (over ear).

Appearance - I would prefer they be aesthetically pleasing because I do plan on wearing them in public. The colors black, Red, Grey, and Blue are preferable but any colors could be fine. Just avoid suggesting things that look like this.

Balance - Heavy Bass preferred but neutral is fine too.

Past Headphones -

  • Beats Studios (They're Ok/10)
  • Apple Earpods (Uncomfortable/10)
  • Senheiser HD 202 IIs (Best I've ever owned/10)
  • Sennheiser CX 300 IIs (Awesome/10)

Perfered Music - I listen to a lot of genres, honestly. Mostly general Electronic/Dubstep/DnB but also things like Rock, Metal, Chiptune, Jazz, Rap, and Hip hop. (Most) Artists I listen to:

  • Anamanaguchi
  • Childish Gambino
  • Daft Punk
  • Feint
  • Foxy Shazam
  • Hopsin
  • Icona Pop
  • Jay Z
  • Kanye West
  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Madeon
  • Mediks
  • Nas
  • Netsky
  • Nujabes
  • Saberpulse
  • Tyler, the creator
  • Zedd

tl;dr: I'm looking for portable headphones that sound as good as they look. They don't have to be an audiophile's wet dream or have Beats quality aesthetics though. I'm currently looking at ATH-M50X's and, before you say it, yes, I know they're not meant to be portable and yes I know they're over recommended. I'm willing to sacrifice portability since they look really nice imo and they have pretty good sound quality that slightly favors lows (which is perfect for me). Thoughts? Recommendations?

u/irishincali · 1 pointr/headphones

I'm looking to buy my first ever pair of headphones. I've used $10-$30 earbuds my entire life and figured it was about time to change that in whatever post-xmas sale I can find.

99% of their use will be indoors or stationary, and there is nothing professional about my needs.

I want comfort first and foremost. While I can wear contacts, I'd be happier with a pair that fit comfortably with glasses.

These Sennheisers are absolutely fucking gorgeous, and have made me realise a very shallow part of me wants a pair that look this good.

Budget - Flexible. If you recommend a $50 pair for a newbie like me with nothing to compare to, that's great. I'm happy to go up to $150ish though if the quality is THAT much better.

Source - 95% Basic laptop, 5% cellphone.

Requirements for Isolation - Enough to be able to watch a movie in bed without the wife complaining? I don't think I need anything particular.

Preferred Type of Headphone - I think I want a large over-ear pair with nice comfortable padding in order to accommodate glasses, but if you tell me on-ear is comfy too, that's fine with me.

Preferred tonal balance - I'm lost here. I want to enjoy a movie without worrying about adjusting sound, but I imagine that's more to do with my computer settings than headphones.

Past headphones - I have cheap Sennheiser IEMs I spent no more than $30-40 on. Never owned a pair of cans.

Preferred Music - I listen mostly to simple voice videos, with "epic" orchestral music coming next (think Inception/Jurassic Park/Star trek), classic rock, and piano music following. I don't listen to hiphop, metal, rap, anything I'd be blasting out my car window. While I do enjoy music, I'm not one you'd consider "into" music though. I'm not worried about epic music quality.

My priorities are

  1. Comfort
  2. Movie watching
  3. Enjoying crisp stereo voice videos with that binaural "ear to ear" effect.
  4. Looking cool as shit
  5. Music

I was able to get some Sennheiser HD 598s for $100 on Black Friday, and they were definitely worth it and still are at the current price. They are a little light on bass, and people will be able to hear the headphones as they are open back. Hi guys, I am looking for headphones ideal for gaming, especially FPS (primarily CS:GO). My two top picks are Audio-Technica's ATHAD500X and the Sennheiser HD598. If you have any other suggestions that you think are better, then please recommend them.

Isolation-None

Budget - Flexible, however, ideally nothing over $200.
Source - PC Aux port

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No.

Preferred tonal balance - I'm a noob when it comes to auditory specifications. All I know is I need headphones with ideally large soundstage and clarity to hear distinct, yet soft noises (e.g. a sudden footstep).

Past headphones - I borrowed a friend's ATHAD500x (listed below). I liked it, but I was wondering how it would compare to the Sennheiser HD598.

Audio Technica AUD ATHAD500X Audiophile Open-Air Headphones

Well, the Rise is a fairly basic full/large mid tower. Being Rosewill, I would expect the reports on the fans to be accurate. My own experiences with their 80-120mm fans have been that they're decent for airflow, but loud as can be. If noise is a major issue, it would definitely be worth considering an alternative.

I know we've gone over headphones, but I'd feel like an arse if I didn't inform you of [this sale] (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1417162803&sr=1-1&keywords=Sennheiser+HD+598). Those are some properly solid headphones (better than most I've owned, and arguably still on par with my own best pair), and that deal is madness. You'd usually expect to pay roughly twice that for them, and even that's not a bad deal. If you're still sticking with your G430s, I understand, but I wanted to let you know just in case.

Wanting to get some good headphones, first time buyer, budget of ~£200.

Currently I'm trying to decide between Sennheiser HD598s and HD600s. From doing a bit of research it seems that a lot of people are saying that the HD598s have better mids and are 'more fun', but that the HD600s are 'more neutral' and also have a better build quality.

I can't really tell without trying both of them, but that isn't possible for me at the moment for a variety of reasons. Any input would be much appreciated.

PS: When it comes to amps, preamps, DAC and the like, I have literally no idea where to start or if I should bother with getting one right away.

Also, they'll be plugged into my 2013 rMBP most of the time by the way if that happens to make any sort of difference.

I'm not sure how serious you take your audio, but stay away from pretty much ALL gaming headsets. The hyperx is alright, but you're going to get worse sound and a bad mic in general. It may be hard to get some really decent stuff for completely under 100 in any aspect, but it's doable. I wouldn't recommend a gaming headset at any price point, but it's a bit understandable at a low budget. If you start increasing your price range even by 40-50 bucks and still go with a gaming headset, you're wasting money.

Gaming headsets sell things that are either objectively worse like simulated surround or cheap out on parts for a cool "gamer" look. I'd make a post in /r/headphones if you really want to get something of value, or I can try to help out a bit.

These go on sale for about 100 bucks time to time

Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO These are similar to the DT 880s (not in sound apparently), but they are apparently more comfortable than the 880s. THey are also much cheaper than the 880s

AKG K702 The design of these is appealing and that they meant to be detailed in sound.

AKG Q701 These supposedly sound better than the K702s in that they have more bass These are the very most that I am willing to spend.
An yother suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi! I recently saw that the Sennheiser HD518, HD558, and the HD 598 are all on sale on amazon at a pretty good price. I've been wanting a pair of open headphones for a while and I'd like to know if it's worth getting the 598 over the 558 or even the 518. I've been leaning towards the 558 as a nice middle ground, but I'm not sure I should choose the cheaper ones to save money if they are still great, or get something that's worth the extra cash. Thanks in advance!

Sennheiser HD 598, open back, beige. Bought late last year. Anything more specific you're looking for?

A little digging - and these may be within my budget, but I'm a little confused. Would you be able to enlighten me as to the differences between the different variants of the HD 598 here?

  • HD 598 - Standard listing, nice but at a hefty £182, which paired with a mic pushes me up towards the £200 mark - a little steep, but then...

  • HD 598 C - Enter the "C" variant, with closed backs. RRP equivalent to the standard 598's, but currently on sale for a much nicer £140. Would I be correct in assuming that the closed backs will negatively affect the sound quality & soundstaging to an extent here? Some reviews suggest that may make things more "artificial" sounding; though in reality, I doubt I would notice much difference as a casual user (and regardless, compared to the gaming headsets I'm used to, I'm sure there will be a big increase). Likely better isolation from outside noise, however. But then there's also...

  • HD 598 SR - What seem to be standard 598's (apparently in the special-edition black, no less) with a one-button remote and in-line mic for phone calls... again at a lower price. I think I must be missing something here.

Do you have any experience or advice here on which may be the most suitable?

Budget - $500 - $600 CAD Flexible?... Lower is probably recommended? Unsure

Source - This is what I'm looking for.

Preferred tonal balance - Probably flat? Not 100% sure, but would probably prefer something with less harsh highs.

Past headphones - Sennheiser PC 363D, HD 598 (I'm extremely new to this. These were great to my ears and sufficient for everything, but I want to learn more.)

Preferred Music - EDM (Eg [1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GudhUvWwe3c) [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJBxNA8cX-E) [3] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnZ1WE8DVOI), among varied types of sub-genres), Video Game Music + Orchestrated / Piano versions (Mainly J-RPG Tunes), R&B, Pop, Rock, some Metal.

Looking for a solution for gaming, music, and television. Most attractive option right now is to grab a Essence STX II, and then the Modi Multibit/Magni Uber. These will be used for The Massdrop PC 37x and HD 6xx respectively. Normally just listen off Spotify Premium and television off web streaming services. Will eventually look into lossless audio files in the near future. Would love other recommendations for a starter in terms of sound cards and DACs and amps, and if the Uber + Multibit variations are even worth their cost. Also, tube amps are intimidating right now, so I probably want to stay away from them for now

What's your budget? A common affordable mic is a Blue Yeti, or Blue Snowball. A favorite among the gaming community is the Sennheiser HD 598, or HD 598 SE.. they are the same, but the SE are black. Then if you want those headphones but with closed backs they are now around $50 less then the open backs.. HD 598 C's. It is preferred with those headphones, to buy a headphone amp or USB DAC to go with it.. If those don't work within your budget, let me know and we can find something else! There are many options. My personal setup is Sennheiser PC-350 headset with the Mic removed, and an AKG P220 condenser mic mounted onto a Rode PSA1 desktop boom arm connected to a Behringer Q802USB Mixer.

Sennheiser HD 598s - My crappy skullcandy over ears now barely work in the right ear, and I just got a pre-amp to record and edit music, which I am now forced to use the stock apple earbuds. These are some of the finest headphones I have used, for listening and making music. I want them badly.

So I think this will be a fairly easy question to answer, but I was wondering for headphones that don't have a volume control built-in, is there anything I can put on the headset to have that functionality? Kind of like a mixer of some sort? I'm thinking of purchasing these Sennheiser headphones for gaming, but what I care about the most is the ability to change the audio at whim while I'm gaming.

I just recently discovered the Mixamp and it sounds like something I would definitely be willing to purchase. Surely, these aren't the only one of its kind, but what exactly are these things called? Are there any others you would recommend?

u/eagleye719 · 1 pointr/headphones

u/foamed · 1 pointr/Games

Sorry, but we got to remove this as it breaks rule #13. Threads like these are better suited for subreddits like /r/headphones, /r/audiophile and /r/gamingsuggestions.

Just a quick tip from an audiophile though. The ATH-M50's are amazing (there's no doubt about that), however they aren't the best for gaming. If you're mainly going to use a pair of headphones for gaming (or just at your computer), then I recommend you check out headphones like:

u/digitalskyfire · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Reference headphones fro m Sennheiser and Sony are going to be what a lot of people suggest, and in a similar vein, I've really been enjoying my Sennheiser HD 598 pair recently. About 250 bucks, and they sound great. Well reviewed, too, so at least there's a consensus.

u/TheLotusEater · 1 pointr/edmproduction

Sure, no problem. Check out /r/audiophile for more ideas as well. I did research on headphones for about a month before I bought them and have a really sound understanding of the situation. If you want to ask any questions feel free.

Also, if you're not concerned with bothering people around you, I would suggest you check out the Sennheiser HD598's... The best sounding open aural headphones I've heard. At least, until you start looking into $600 headphones.

Never had good headphones before, looking for a pair to use next year in med school for quality music while studying. Pretty set on Sennheisers just cuz I have friends who've recommended them. I like the style of the ivory 598s but wanted some general input before I bite the bullet. My friend specifically recommended the 598s but didn't give a reason as to why that particular sennheiser model

Budget: $500 USD MAX but preferably <$450

Source: MacBook and PC

Isolation: I'll be studying in coffee shops and quiet libraries both so some is preferred but it doesn't have to be like TOTAL ISOLATION

Use in public: Yes, so some with a travel case would be nice

Preferred Type of Headphones: I've mostly been looking at Sennheisers cuz they're the brand I know the most about. I like "woodsy" styles like the Sennheiser 598 ivory the most but styles like this are cool too (I'm all about aesthetics). I'll need to be able to attach a separate mic for when I game tho

ALSO I'm a small female with a small head so something that won't fall off every time I move my head would be nice. And I wear glasses 24/7 so headphones that won't make my head hurt after 4-5 hours of straight studying would be nice too

Preferred tonal balance: No preference

Past headphones: A $25 pair of Sades Spirit Wolfs bc I needed something ASAP and didn't want to drop $$$$ without a fair amount of research

Preferred Music: Electronic, indie/folk, rap/hip-hop

What would you like to improve on from your set-up: Something that's not cheap and doesn't suck and also looks pretty (again, I like the color/style of the Sennheiser 598 in ivory and also styles with wood)

Currently running IOS 11.1.2 and haven't updated to 11.3 yet.
So far I am having great results with the following set up:

DAC: FX-Audio DAC-X6

Cans: Sennheiser HD598

Cable: Lightning to MIDI Cable, USB 2.0

Waiting on Lightning Cable Splitter so I can charge at the same time. Will report in if all works.

Sometimes I'll get an error that the fx audio isn't compatable because it requires too much power but it is standalone and powers itself so this is just a software issue that it is reporting to iphone too large an amp draw. Unplugging and plugging back in seems to fix the occasional issue. Apparently there is a way to trick the iphone by using a intermediate usb hub to report a lower amperage info here

u/FatS4cks · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Drop the headset. You're already getting a pretty damn good mic, so I'd recommend the hd598 if you listen to more traditional music, crossfade LP if you like electronica or rap srh440 if you don't care and just want something that sounds totally neutral, like in a studio.

Probably get a mechanical keyboard instead of the apex, I recommend the CM Quickfire TK, Logitech g710+ or the Corsair K70.

u/Scapee · 1 pointr/headphones

Also been looking around and debating between Philips X1 or Denon D600 or Sennheiser HD 598 or V-MODA Crossfade M-100 or Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-80 or Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro or ATH-AD900X

Im really leaning towards the Custom One pros since there on sale for 179.99 on ebay but are they better then Sennheiser HD 598?

Also how big is the difference between noise cancelling headphones with Open/Closed ones and would it matter with music playing?
Thank you so much for your advice :)

u/ShaunTighe · 1 pointr/headphones

Gaming headsets are almost always terrible. You are far better off buying a pair of headphones and a microphone separate.

u/chouetteonair · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Sennheiser HD 598's are supposedly the same drivers with an open backed design that focuses a lot more on the sound w/o a mic, they're 150 USD. There's also the HD 600's at the 300 USD price point if you want that.

The price of the Sennheiser HD598 seems to have fallen recently---it's around the 150 USD range on Amazon, putting it just within your budget. It's great for casual listening and isn't very fatiguing. It's also mostly flat, but it does have a slight boost in the low mids---this makes it glaringly obvious when you have mud in your mix, but it makes it hard to gauge what's going on in the sub-bass.

u/DeathKoil · 1 pointr/buildapc

I know you say the cords bother you, but hear me out.

I have a Sound Blaster Z, which comes with a mic that sits on top of my monitor. I never notice it, and I don't see any wires. I use the Sound Blaster Z to power my Sennheiser 598 headphones.

My setup is expensive, but it is also amazing. There are cheaper alternatives. The Sennheiser 558 headphones are 100 dollars, though you'd still need a small mic like the one that comes with the Sound Blaster Z.

Sennheiser does make headsets. This one is (if i recall correctly) the 558 headphones with a mic attached for you.

If that is also too expensive I can leave you with this advice. Get yourself a pair of open headphones and a mic like the one that comes with the Sound Blaster Z. Open headphones are better for gaming than closed headphones / noise canceling headphones. Open headsets have a much larger "Sound Stage" compared to closed. The "Sound Stage" is how big the area appears to be that the sounds are coming from. Open headsets with large sound stages allow you to better pin-point where a sound is coming from. This allows you to much more easily tell that the footsteps you hear you coming from your 5 o'clock and that player is 20 yards away, for example.

The only time a headset is better closed than open is if you live in a very loud house/apartment, you live in a college dorm and don't want your roommate to hear your games/music, or you plan to use the headset in public at a library or on a bus. If you are buying strictly for gaming, open is the way to go.

Most headsets you can buy at retail shops are closed. This is a trend that started maybe 5-6 years ago when eSports were getting bigger. The pros play in tournaments with closed headsets because they need to block out the sound of the crowd. People want the same gear their favorite pro uses, so suddenly open headsets disappeared from retail shops.

The three Sennheiser products I linked are all open headsets.

So I'm pretty set on going with the Sennheiser HD 598 and this cool little DAC I found called an AUDIOQUEST - DRAGONFLY V1.2

I feel these will ge the job done very well. What do y'all think?

  • Budget - $200 - $400 USD for both headphones and an amp+dac (if needed).
  • Source - A desktop PC and laptop. Nothing special about them.
  • Requirements for Isolation - Does not matter
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Over-ear, full size, open. Something comfortable, that I can wear for looooong periods. I wear glasses and can't find a pair that would help.
  • Tonal balance - Something a little bass-y. See preferred music for a better udnerstanding. I like a good kick when the bass hits but something that also provides very good highs for games and such.
  • Past headphones - Logitech G930.
  • Preferred Music - I listen to anything electric/techno/big room/rock/metal/rap/country/ANY TYPE OF MUSIC I LISTEN TO

  • Past headphones - mostly shit headphones, apple buds, skullcandy Icon 2, turtle beach z11s and x12s
  • Preferred Music - anything and everything. from electronic to pop to rap to jazz (i have all of these songs in my library)

Right now I'm between the M50x and HD598 as they are within 10$.

from what I've read the sennheiser is the superior set in terms of audio quality but I'm by no means an audiophile and want to know if the sound neutrality and comfort outshine the portable-ness and tougher build of the M50s.

This was a very helpful thread and if anyone has any comments about it they're welcome.

also if these two headphones are not the best and someone has a better recommendation in my price range I'm all ears.

u/camicazi · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

OK, I came up with a few suggestions:

$100-150 sennheiser hd558, ath ad700x, akg k612

$150-200 sennheiser hd598,
ath ad900x, akg q701, beyerdynamic dt990

(both akg k612 and beyer requiers an amp, makes the price go up with about $200 if you dont already have an amp), you dont necessarily need an amp for the akg q701, but be ready to crank volumes up to maximum to get a comfortable volume level without an amp, and some people think that the volume is just too low without it.

Should be noted that if you have the cash to go with the beyer, it should perform almost as amazing as the ad900x and q701 with positional sound, but also has among the best bass in the market at sub $500

u/frisktoad · 1 pointr/GlobalOffensive

Don't buy any of that gamer gear. They are overpriced and quality is subpar. Go with these two these two; Sennheiser HD598 and Antlion Modmic.

Sennheiser HD598 are one of the best headphones for the price in the market right now. They are open-back, meaning that the ear cups are open, thus sound leaks towards your surrounding but external noise is also not isolated. If you plan to play at home it is a great choice. Moreover the soundstage is superb (since they are open back). The mic is probably the best you can get for $50. Great sound quality and it also attaches on the headphones.

If you want to make the headphones sound even better consider buying an amplifier and a DAC in the future. Maybe you'll want even a different, more advanced model in a couple of years.

I can't answer all of it, but I don't think lossless files necessarily have poor metadata support. It may just be that the sources you are getting these files from didn't bother with it.

If you have an apple i-phone it probably sounds better because it has a good built in DAC, some other phones may have this too, or it may just be that your computer isn't set up properly

yes a better soundcard can increase your sound quality, but you're probably better off buying an external DAC and using a WASAPI output. [Chart] I have a Fiio E17 and im getting a Aune T1 soon :)

As far as headphones i recommend a pair of Sennheiser 598's for $250 or if that's too pricey the Audio-Technica ATH-M50's are a great pair of phones for $160

Gaming headsets, Astro A40s and other 'high end' sets specifically. I understand why they're popular, they're a convenient way of getting clear game audio with a built in microphone, but for the money they're so incredibly ineffectual.

Why would you buy one expensive thing that sits at your desk and produces inferior quality audio when you can buy a pair of headphones at less or equal cost that destroy it (and are portable/useful outside the PC gaming world) and any number of microphones (like this or this or this or this) that offer greater quality and the ability to use your headphones as headphones?

At the moment I use AudioEngine A2's

So what I would like would be a nice Dac/headphone amp that I could sit on my desk and have easy access to. I'd greatly prefer it if the thing would let me plug my A2's (speakers) and headphones in. This way I'd have limited hassle with cords.

Finally I'd like to pay $200 or less to be quite honest. Not looking for top of the line here, just something obviously better then on board!

TL;DR

> Budget: $100-$150 (somewhat flexible, but I would rather stay in this range)

>Source: 3.5mm

>Requirements for Isolation: In home, but there is some background noise from my pc and others possibly in the room.

>Will you be using these Headphones in Public?: No

>Preferred Type of Headphone: Over-ear

>Preferred tonal balance: I prefer a little extra bass

>Past headphones: Logitech G430 (shudders. After raising the bass in an EQ they weren't awful, but the quality is far from great)

>Preferred Music: Rap, rock, pop, and electronic.

>What would you like to improve on from your set-up: Much clearer audio, more immersion in games, less distortion in certain frequencies/areas.

Looking for a quality pair of headphones for mainly pc gaming but also for music. My budget is around $100-$150. Also, I prefer a slightly heavier/more pronounced bass on a pair of headphones. This is because I mainly listen to rap, rock, pop, and electronic music.

I am not sure whether I should go for open vs closed. I want to get a pair of open headphones, but I heard that sound leaks in and I do not want to hear background noise. I never used an open pair of headphones, so I could be over/underestimating how much noise leaks in and out of the headphones.

The two pairs of open headphones that I have been looking into are the Sennheiser 598 (I prefer the black special edition) and the Audio Technica AD900 / AD900X. Both of these are open headphones. Are there some good closed headphones that sound great at this price range?

In games, I want a little more immersion and less distortion. I feel that my Logitech G430s fail to do this and take a lot away from the game.

If you need me to include any more information, ask and I will update this comment.

I absolutely hated them.

Currently I use 598's You can do a small easy mod that will basically transform audiophile grade headphones into a headset using this mic a small adapter and taking out 1 plastic piece on the headset itself.

  • Budget: $200 preferred ($300-350 if it's significantly better for price/performance)

  • Location: US

  • Source: PC w/ ALC889 and very rarely potentially my Yamaha RX V765

  • Isolation: None (Home use only)

  • Preferred Type: Circumaural - Full-Sized Over Ear (OPEN)

  • Preferred Tonal Balance: overall balanced

  • Past Headphones: Steelseries Siberia V2 (With USB Vitual 7.1)

  • Preferred Music: Gaming and music - I seriously listen to everything except dubstep unless someone on twitch is streaming it :P - I generally listen to hip hop and rock, but also enjoy classical and other easy listening.

    Background/My Thoughts

I generally prefer to invest slightly more in my things for better quality and longevity. I'd happily invest more in things if I knew it was more likely to last or if the quality is significantly higher for the cost.

The left speaker in my siberia just stopped working. I am very close to grabbing the Sennheiser G4ME ONE's used from Amazon because I have a $50 gift card waiting to be used and I'm a sucker for great price/performance.

I figure either $200 for a headset OR $300-$350 for Headphones + whatever else.

    Option 1: Headset w/ Mic

I don't necessarily need a headset w/built in mic, I'm aware of the modmic option, but if I'm not mistaken the G4ME ONE essentially an HD 558 just with the added microphone which will be very nice for me due to how much I'm on vent/Teamspeak when I game. I don't see the point in investing much more than 150-200 for an all-in-one because as I understand the quality doesn't go much higher from here anyways.. so to get more quality I'd look at option 2 and by that point it seems to be very costly to compete with the HD 558. And since I can get the ONE used for 150-50=$100 that seems like a great option.

    Option 2: Headphone + Soundcard OR DAC/AMP + ModMic

Unless someone knows something that I don't, this is where I'd be spending more than the $200, and hopefully only if it's actually going to be 50-100% better. I considered the AT-ADG1's in option 1 above, but I don't believe they offer $100 more in value over the G4ME ONE (White/red new is $200)- please correct me if I am wrong.

Here are of the products I considered for option 2:

  • HD 598
  • DT 990
  • AKG Q701 (Or K701 - but I like the Q design)

I am assuming I'll need to add another 100-200 on top of the headphone to drive them.

If there are any options that let me gradually upgrade/add on the DAC/Amp I'd consider that, but my impression is that certain headphones need to be driven properly from day 1. I realize that any headphones, even the G4ME ONE would benefit from a better amp or soundcard, but if I go for them then I don't plan to get another soundcard or external DAC/AMP anytime soon.

Any advice/thoughts on this or anything else would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the wall of text. :D

I'm debating between two headphones. For the past few years I've been using Urbanears which I've really loved but I'm now looking for something a little bit more high quality. I can't decide if I should get these 598s or if I should get these ATH-M50xs. Which ones do you think are most worth it?

u/attackzac21 · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget- ~$300

Source- High end gaming PC (gaming headphones unneeded)

Requirements for isolation- Almost none basically, I am willing to sacrifice isolation completely for higher sound quality

Preferred type of headphones-Anything that is not an IEM. Tin cans preferable.

Past headphones- The best one I had was the Beyer Custom Pro One but I switched it out for a plantetronics gamescom because the custom Pro Ones would break every single time, no matter what.

Music selection- I like trap, hip hop, but I pretty much listen to everything. What my base goal for getting high end headphones is too make gunshots sound incredible.

The 3 ive been currently eyeing are the

Hifiman HE300

Sennheiser HD598

and the Audio Technica ATH-900X

although I feel that I should make more use of my budget considering that ill have $100-150 left over.

Looking for advice about buying a new set of headphones. On Craigslist, a pair of Sennheiser 598 Headphones for $90, and a pair of ATH-M40x's for $100. Are either of these a good deal? And, if not, would you have headphones to recommend for a good price while maintaining the quality of these headphones?

HD 598s
+
FiiO DAC

This is the combo that fit my budget, I am not a audiophile though - and I also to Drum and Bass. If you are listening on a PC, the DAC is a must-have. Whatever audio board my Asus Sabertooth motherboard had did not do these headphones justice. It was a brand new listening experience with the DAC.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 4.4's and the sound is great but they become uncomfortable after a little while.

I saw a local woman selling the Sennheiser 598's in ivory for $150.

Is that a pretty awesome deal or should I hold out?

u/ArmchairSysadmin · 1 pointr/vancouver

Check for sales from Amazon.ca, you can grab a Sennheiser HD 598 for ~ $100 CAD.

Also, /r/bapcsalescanada is very helpful.

u/greatestape · 1 pointr/headphones

I have some decent Audio Technica's right now but I plan on getting these: https://www.amazon.ca/Sennheiser-HD-598-Headphones-Accents/dp/B0042A8CW2

I'm planning on getting a turntable. I find that I don't just sit down and listen to music anymore. It's so easy to get distracted when you're listening to music on your computer or your phone. I can't crank music in my apartment so I thought a good headphone amp would be a good alternative. The Valhalla 2 looks awesome and Schitt also makes a phono amp.

I'm open to suggestions though. Like I said, it's going to cost a lot to get this stuff to Canada.

Since you're taking /u/klepperx's suggestions and saving some money, you could get a much better microphone and still stay under budget. Since you're getting a desk microphone, there's no need to get a headset (although the Cloud / Cloud II would definitely be the ones to get). What kind of fit and sound signature do you like? Do you need the headphone to be portable? What are your requirements for isolation? Here's my reccommendations at ~$100:

  • Brainwavz HM5 - Closed back, over ear, neutral sound, not easily portable due to lack of folding hinge. Can also be found as Yoga CD880 and NVX XPT 100.
  • AKG K240 Studio - Open back (provides much better positional audio than even most virtual surround, but leaks sound and provides little isolation from background noise), over ear, neutral sound, not portable due to amp requirement.
  • Sennheiser HD 558 - Open back, over ear, neutral sound, not portable due to lack of folding hinge. These are my current headphones, and I can't say enough good things about them. They're very similar to the HD598, with the main difference being the material that they're made of.
  • Sennheiser HD 598 Cs - Closed back version of the HD 598, which are virtually the same as the HD 558. I actually thought these cost more, so they're a great deal. Be aware that they will have a different frequency response (read: more bass) due to being closed-back.
  • Audio Technica ATH-AD500x - Open back, over ear, bright (mid forward), not portable due to lack of folding hinge.

Hi all. I'm looking for a new pair of every day headphones to wear around the house, out on walks, and in transit. Comfort is a big factor. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Budget - $200 CAD, flexible
Source - Typically my phone (Nexus 6P)
Requirements for Isolation - Some - Typically I use headphones at home, but I'd like them to be appropriate for long walks, flights and bus trips as well.
Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes
Preferred Type of Headphone - Full size or on ear, slight preference for full size.
Preferred tonal balance - Overall balance, slight warm or bassy leaning is second preference
Past headphones - Koss PortaPro
Preferred Music - Lots of various genres of electronic/bassy music - Most listened to being Pretty Lights, Griz, Gramatik, Odesza, Kaytranada. Also Lots of hip hop - NxWorries, Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar being favourites. And a lot of spoken word stuff - stand-up comedy and podcasts mostly.
What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Better clarity than the Koss PortaPro, found that the sounds blended together a little more than I'd like.

Location - Canada

EDIT: These HD 598's seem to fit the bill for the most part, is this a good price for these? Link

you talking these? https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-598-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B0042A8CW2 these generally give much better sound isolation than completely flat type the Rift uses

u/2capp · 0 pointsr/headphones

$153 on US Amazon right now. According to the camel this is the cheapest they've been since the drop to $99.

u/ryfleman1992 · 0 pointsr/buildapcsales

Just a reminder, Sennheiser 598s are still on sale for $6 more on Amazon and from prettymuch everything I've read are superior in everything but base. Sennheiser's sale is also a much better deal in terms of dollars knocked off.

No audiophile but it seems like unless your music is almost all base heavy the Sennheisers are a much better deal.

u/SpartanAesthetic · 0 pointsr/preppy

I was just telling someone about how classy these look. I'm sure /r/audiophile would approve as well.

u/RicardoSa · 0 pointsr/headphones

Sennheiser HD558 or HD598 with Vmoda BoomPro Mic .
With this combination you basically have a headset.

u/ReallySeriousThere · 0 pointsr/melodicdeathmetal

I've been using a pair of Argon 7460A active speakers for quite a while (about $400). But just 2 days ago I figured I wanted better quality audio so I went out and bought a pair of Sennheiser HD 598 and my god do they sound amazing.

u/funnygreensquares · 0 pointsr/todayilearned

Holy shit. Who the hell has $240 to spend on headphones? I get it if it's your passion or your career/hobby. But damn, I just want something that makes the little box in my hand play sounds in my ears.

u/Mudstack · -1 pointsr/headphones

The 598's don't cost nearly that much money. They hover around $140 on amazon brand new. Where are you finding them for $260? As for the 600's, I would buy them if I had the money over the 598's.
