Can't you increase your budget at all? $40 is pretty low for a headset. You could probably increase your budget to $50-60 and buy a halfway decent used headset. If you can't, I understand, people have bills to pay, I just wanted to ask.

I say this because I always used cheap headphones and headsets until I built my own gaming PC about 2 years ago. I saved up my money for most of my adult life until I had about $10K to spend to build my new PC and all the peripherals. (I'm poor and have a lot of bills so it took a LONG time to save up that kind of money.) I got Sennheiser PC 363D (which at the time were about $350 USD, they don't make them anymore because they were replaced last year by the newer model, PC 373D (Amazon link) which had worse reviews than the older model, PC 363D) and wish I had gotten a decent headset/headphones years ago. It makes such a huge difference when playing games because I can actually clearly hear what direction the enemy/player is coming from and how far away they are because the headset comes with a removable DAC attached and has both a regular mode and surround-sound mode. I use regular mode for games and surround-sound for music and movies.

Sennheiser makes cheaper options too and if you would be willing to buy used, I'd recommend checking them out. Check out these Sennheiser on-ear headphones and let me know what you think. Some are as low as $40-50 brand new or you could get a more expensive pair used for the same price. Check the used section on Amazon or eBay or even the different reddit subs that trade/sell computer stuff. They're often much cheaper on Amazon too, so if you see headphones on the Sennheiser website and they're too expensive, check for the same model on Amazon because they're usually much cheaper.

That sounds like a good plan, and doing some plot-heavy LPs will help you practice. I've never heard of taping a tissue to your headset mic but that sounds like an awesome idea!! If you're looking for a good replacement headset, I'm absolutely in love with the one I bought recently (Amazon link if you want to check it out). It's a perfect mix between price and quality, so as long as you're okay with investing ~$40 into your setup it'll greatly improve your video quality.

I noticed the same thing about that tutorial, that it's tailored towards male voices, which kind of sucks. I followed it exactly for my last LP and although I really like what it did to my voice, I'm sure I could tweak it and make it more appropriate for me. Or I could just keep rocking the "kind of young-male-sounding female voice" thing haha

I don't know if I'm just a pleb or what, but this headset (Sennheiser PC 310) has not been "trash" in my experience.

I use a Logitech F540 I got from a Dented Box deal some years ago (maybe 2 now). The battery died and I replaced it (quick fix) for 11 USD. I paid 89 for the headset and it has been amazing.

That said the cost for this set seems to be a bit high so I dug around looking for some good deals on gaming headsets, assuming you wanted to buy them all new.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-G230-Stereo-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00BFOEY4I/ - The G230 seems to have decent reviews at about 45.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Surround-Gaming-Headset-Technology/dp/B00CQ35C1Q/ - The G430 seems to also be a decently reviewed set for 67.

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PC-310-Gaming-Headset/dp/B0087ZMATE/ - These brands seem to be suggested a lot. Decent reviews for ~41.

http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Diablo-III-Gaming-Headset/dp/B005L38SGY/ - Here is a Diablo branded Steelseries headset, good brand good reviews for 62.

There can be some money saved going used and for example on the Steelseries set Amazon Warehouse Deals sells a set for 47.85 with free shipping and "Minor Cosmetic Damage". If AWD is anything like Logitech their "minor cosmetic damage" is mostly the box.

Hope I wasn't too late and these links can get you moving somewhere.
