You seem to be defending copyright - that's a totally separate argument from patents, only thing in common they have is that they are intellectual property laws.

IIRC some economist calculated that marginal cost of copying a product, just marginal cost (not including the implied cost of having a team able to reverse engineer the product, pay for their education and work - since they need to do work to be up to date in field and be able to copy) is ~70% of R&D. That's just a rough number behind that argument I already proposed for cost of copying.

Here is a great video if you are interested, he talks about patents somewhere in and compares US aviation industry growth with and without patents, also he wrote a book with a chapter on topic. His conclusion is that the only area patents are "justified" is pharmaceuticals because cost of testing the drug exceed cost of R&D by far and once you test the drug there is no need to do it again (or the cost is significantly less) even when you reverse engineer it.
