did the same thing till I saw this at a best buy near me, it learns your soundbar volume and power buttons too.

I got a Sideclick for my first gen Fire TV - and I love it. I was able to stop using the other remotes for my TV and soundbar.

You might also want to try this remote and let us know how you like it.

Sideclicks are pretty awesome but just seem a little expensive for what they are.

Another option is the addon remote but they do not have enough buttons for me. I need channel up/down and a ways to scroll though the tv inputs and hit "enter".

Edit: I just read that you said you don't have the original remote... You will need them for both of these options since they are learning.

Can try the SideClick, one of the various Harmony remotes, or just enable HDMI-CEC and use your tv remote.

How complex are the buttons you need to hit? Sideclick Has a great remote and all of the buttons are fully customizable

You want something that attaches to the remote. I used to use this:

Works great and doesn’t add much space to the remote.

Might I recommend the Sideclick remote attachment...
I use it to control my Onkyo receiver and TV. Works flawlessly.

I do not believe you can do that. I snagged a sideclick (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRFY61G/ref=psdc_3236443011_t1_B01N32WC5H) and it works great. You have to set using the TV remote or one that is already setup with the TV functions. You can set any function to any button the remote. I even use it with the new Alexa remote with volume and power since I set a button for sleep. Good luck.

I have a sideclick that I have programmed to change volume, channels, bring up my OTA guide info, change imputs. Works like a charm. Still use it instead of voice on my Fire TV Cube. Not perfect solution as it is a second set of batteries, etc. but workable.

Wow thanks for all of this. You're exactly the type of dude I need to talk to since you own both a FireTV and a Mibox. I had already decided to go with the FireTV and one of these to make changing volume and turning on/off the tv easier.

I haven't ordered them yet, and what you said about the FireTV not having a power button worries me. It's troubling because I was reading online on how someone was using crazy amounts of bandwidth because they weren't turning off their FireTV. So how exactly do you turn off the device? And I'm not sure if you know anything about that Sideclick remote but do you think I'll be able to program one of the buttons to turn off the FireTV? THanks

You need a sideclick for fire remote.

Clips onto the remote. Turns on TV, powers sound bar, does tv inputs, volume, and changes channels. $25 bucks and I only have one remote now that works everything (and voice search) :).

i use sideclick + shield adapter to get physical volume buttons. works pretty well

u/jim0240 · 1 pointr/DIY_tech

Not sure if they still make them,

Found this today, seems to clip onto most small remotes, I know its not iphone compatable but hope it helps.

This NEEO is sleek but still has a screen.

Sidekick for Fire TV.

If your parent is a veteran (or active duty) ATT offers a 25% discount on cell, home phone, internet and DirectTV and DirectTVNow.

Set my parents up with DirectTVNow (streaming cable with local stations) and an Amazon Fire on each TV. They pay $50/month for more stations than they had with Comcast cable. Had to keep Comcast Internet ($70/month with land-line phone line. They do not want to get rid of land-line) because ATT internet is too slow in their area. They tend to go over the 1TB Comcast limit, which adds $10-30 to the bill, but it’s still cheaper than the $230 they were paying to Comcast each month. I bought them a telephony modem so they don’t pay $10/month to rent and bought a very nice open box WiFi mesh system for $40. We also share Amazon Prime Video and share Netflix with a friend.

Learning how to use the new remote may be your hardest thing to overcome. If you go for Amazon Fire, get the “SideClick” so they only have “one” remote that does everything. I have always used universals (harmony brand in fact) remotes with all of my streamers (including fire tv) but... I have seen these on amazon for some time now... might be what you are after...

Personally I would just take that money and put it towards a harmony but thought I would pass it on if you didn't know about it.
