I've started sleeping with tape over my mouth using this tape. I think it has increased my wakefulness and reduced how much I need to sleep.

Serious answers (my CPAP nasal mask was blowing my mouth open while sleeping; you don't know cotton mouth until every inch of your mouth and throat is so dry you can't even close it).

3M Micropore surgical tape over the mouth (it's serious stuff and quite a challenge to remove in the morning). The trick is to roll your lips in, then apply it.

Also, Sleep Strips by SomniFix might work for you. In fact, if you want to try them, I have a mostly full box I can mail you (they're individually wrapped, like bandages). They didn't work as well for me as the surgical tape ... and I later re-trained myself to sleep with my mouth closed (most nights, at least).

Also, creating suction in your mouth and holding it seems to help somewhat, too.

Now I need to deal with biting my tongue while sleeping; hoping I can manage that without investing in a mouth guard.

> Well, ever since I just forced myself to breathe thru my nose... I've actually had the clearest breathing I can ever imagine.

I had this exact same experience. I swear my brain fog even cleared before I was in full ketosis.

I get downvoted a lot for mentioning mouth taping but it is not a gimmick.

I use these https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1541210807&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=somnifix&psc=1

Thank you for letting me know it is working for you. Makes it worth the downvotes :)

What kind of tape would you recommend? 3M Micropore paper tape or something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8

And do you think there's any benefit to using Flonase to encourage deeper breathing even though I don't have any allergies now?

Update: Used Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape last night (best I could find locally). Didn't have any trouble whatsoever falling asleep or staying asleep. Awoke feeling refreshed, perhaps slightly more refreshed than normal, but not eye-opening, dramatically more refreshed. Wore a DenTek Maximum Protection Dental Guard underneath. It juts out just a little, but I used 2 layers of tape, and I felt like the seal was pretty good. Woke up with a moist mouth. Noticeable saliva on the gums. Though, I will say my throat was a little dry. I might have been biting into the guard a little too much, and the impression might be rubbing on my gums. But that might have been happening anyway, and I suppose it's better to have that friction with a well moistened mouth than a dry one. I'm going to try the tape with a low-profile, disposable Plackers one that needs to be changed out every few days.

Edit: Definitely feel more refreshed, the more I dwell on it. But, could be a placebo effect.

Ugh I’m sorry health insurance is an issue (I’ve had my experience of not having it for a month and it freaked me out).

The book recommends taping your mouth shut with special tape. I don’t think the book recommends anything specific, but they do make social tape for it:

I almost want to try this for my husband because he snores & sleeps poorly. But I don’t think he would want to pay for a new box every month.

I wonder if there is a cheaper option.

Use mouth tape, prevents mouth breathing and snoring.

I use this stuff: 3M Micropore Paper Tape - White, 1" x 10yds (Box of 12) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TXPZ64/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3O-hDbEAYYGSD

It’s cheap, easy to apply/remove, and hasn’t given me any issues around my mouth.

Not worth the money IMO but I have read good things.

In all seriousness, I was thinking about getting these sleep strips:

https://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Strips-SomniFix-Breathing-Nighttime/dp/B076CQ1NR8

They're made for a different purpose, but I think it's exactly what I need! Provides a breathing hole, but keeps you reminded to keep your mouth closed. What do you think?
