They are not. I get These guys and the Higher amperage USB-C version for our phones and they work great all compatible with each other, though the old micro-USB cables "slow charge" our phone, only the thicker ones that came USB-C can pass the full amperage.
I coworker fell in love, bought an identical-looking different brand, they barely worked and didn't work at all with my cables.
We have 20+, between cars, motorcycles, at work, and all over the house.
Looks like a few people have had luck with the magnetic cables.
I've been using these, and they work fine. In fact, they seem to have a "feature" where hooking it up one way up enables AA while hooking it up the other way charges without AA.
I'm sure this is some sort of flaw in the connector, but I like it since I can choose whether to turn on AA by picking which direction i plug it in.
