I am half way through an amazing book called "Soul Survivor:How Thirteen Unlikely Mentors Helped My Faith Survive the Church" by Phillip Yancey
https://www.amazon.com/Soul-Survivor-Thirteen-Unlikely-Mentors/dp/1578568188
That book would really help them both I believe. Yancey was raised in a very fundamental and judgmental church and found himself questioning everything too. He gives C.S. Lewis some love, as well as Chesterton in the book and Martin Luther King. But it is a great approach to Him seeing the love and grace of our Lord and not a rules/pride based kind of faith.
You might enjoy Soul Survivor by Philip Yancey. Each chapter features a different person who caused Yancey to stretch and grow in his faith. Intriguing and thought-provoking.
