From an interview that's published at the end of the book Sozin's Comet (which is a novelization of the series finale):

> Q: When Aang was on the "mysterious island", Nyla could not locate him, and June concluded he wasn't dead but that he didn't exist. That was a head-scratcher! Can you describe how existence on that "island" was different from either reality or the Spirit World?

> Mike: The answer is actually pretty simple. The lion-turtle exists in the reality of the Avatar World, not the Spirit World. But the lion-turtle is thousands of years old, so his ancient, powerful odor masks the scent of anyone on his back. And that's why Nyla couldn't smell Aang.

> Bryan: Yeah, the lion-turtle's scent is so ancient and pervasive that Nyla just perceives it as the smell of the earth itself.
