Not all things within faith, especially mystic elements such as the spirit, spiritual realm etc are within the scope of empericly research, hence it is instead up to theology scholars, yet there has been many studies. I can recommend the litterature review in book form Speaking in Tongues: Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives is a starting point for a scientific, theological and cultural perspective where both some empericlal research is discussed but also theological schools and traditions. But the field is very rich, and can't be covered by one book or a handful of studies.
