You can also get similar results doing it with linoleum. Same idea as woodblock printing, but easier to learn and cheaper when you make a mistake.
One strategy is to order inexpensive hobby related stuff from amazon and pray that you'll actually get into it.

IDK this might not be so helpful but maybe it was a little helpful. Most of this was art related b/c that's what I think of when I think hobbies I guess, but you could also check out raspberry pi / arduino projects if that's more up your alley.
I started by sketching out some thumbnails, once I found one I liked, I scanned it and printed it out.
Immediately I placed it on the rubber block and ran an iron over it - this transferred the image to the block.
Used some double sided tape to fix block to a piece of metal I had laying around and clamped the metal to a table. This keeps it from moving around while carving.
Then after I carved out the negative space, I used some more tape to tape to a table. I would ink the block (according to the directions in the speedball kit). I added a couple pieces of rubber to the sides after inking so I'd have a surface that the bottle can get some traction on to keep it from sliding on the block and blurring the label.

Beer was a coffee stout partial mash. Probably the best beer we've made to date :) have another batch in bottles now ready to print again.
There are other kits on amazon by speedball that are like $10 and $20 that will be enough to let you know if you're even interested in things like linocut... They're not precisely linocut, as it's not technically linoleum, but the process is the same. (Though the $10 one doesn't come with any kind of ink.) Otherwise, you can get cheap carving tools and blocks and ink separately, but the kits make it convenient to just get started.
