The issue with Squaretrade is that the warranty decays as you use it. That's one reason why it's not super expensive. Meaning, when you buy the warranty, you're putting an insurance policy on the laptop that is equivalent of the value of said laptop. So if the ASUS N550JK is $1099, and the display dies and you invoke the warranty to repair it, and they charge $100 for the display, then your remaining warranty is $999. If the whole laptop dies after that and you need it replaced, you have $999 left on your policy, and will need to pony up the extra $100 to pay the difference on the new $1099 laptop.
It's really not a big deal, IMO. Most of the time it's one thing at a time that gets damaged, not a whole laptop going up in flames. Squaretrade provides a really good way to get a long term warranty for cheap. I'd personally suggest you go with This one.
I'm not just saying all of this to say it either, I got the same one for my dad's laptop since his last one finally went down by a coffee mug falling off of its handle.

You (or anyone else) wouldn't happen to know if is there just an empty spot on the body when you choose not to have an optical drive (I'd just get a USB one) or is the body thinner?
Also, would anyone be able to recommend an accidental damage protection policy? I'm looking at SquareTrade's.
