The John Justin Mallory Series by Mike Resnick?
I think the first book you described is 'Stalking the Unicorn'. More details here.
Buy a copy of this book by Christie Golden and put it in your bathroom. Since it was the introduction of a new setting and new characters, it doesn't have its head up its own ass with references.
Firelord is another one of my favorites. Since it's a retelling of King Arthur, it doesn't have a lot of "whatatweest!" type surprises, but the realistic approach, attention to detail and plain love that Parke Godwin put into the characters is amazing. The biggest bonus is that he trimmed down the cast so you're not constantly wondering "who is this guy again?"
And Mike Resnick's Stalking the Unicorn is pretty awesome. A detective from a gritty, noir-type crapsack world gets transported to an alternate New York filled with elves, gnomes, and fairies.
