The dirty throttle body could definitely cause the starting issue also.
Forgot to mention, the PCV valve is super easy to replace. It wouldn't cause starting issues, but it will cause your throttle body to get dirty again if its not working right.

You just take the plastic valve cover shroud of (2x 12mm bolts iirc), then the PCV valve is on the back left of the valve cover. It takes something like a 3/4" wrench to remove. Do this with the engine cold. It has some sealant on the threads, just spin a rag around in the hole in the valve cover to clean out some of the old sealant.
