I have an LSI SAS 9212 card which has 8 lanes of PCIE Gen2.

I was running out of slots and as a temporary measure I put it in this 16 lane to 1 lane adapter and it worked fine. The drives I put on that interface were only accessed one at a time. Then I got a new board with more and longer slots.

Even if you could get the card physically installed and recognized by the operating system by using an adapter, the motherboard chipset itself doesn't support SLI.

you can get a pci x1 to x16 adapter (For what ever crazy reason) then connect the x2 to that

though to my mind if you spend long engough searching its only locical captain that an x2 adapter should exist :p

> Oh really? Awesome.

While it might work, doesn't sound like something I'd want to do considering potential risks, especially with the card you describe further down this comment thread. I have no experience with doing such myself or enough electronical knowledge about this sort of thing to know of consequences other than I'd be too paranoid to do it.

There are safer alternatives like these x1 to x16 adapters without damaging your cards(great if you want to consider resale):

Note those are just two results from google, they're not reccommendations that I looked into or anything like that, I've yet to use one of those myself.

Actually I was thinking you used something like this.

Thinking back I did think about cutting it but at the time decided I didn't want to risk messing up the mobo or even that one slot. Also decided against the adapter as it might not work and returning it would be a hassle so I went with the 730.

I was just using a 980 as an example but it would be fun to try out. One of these days I might try something out and report back.
