It's mini-din, not micro, but you're right about the power.

That looks like the back of a two-bay SATA dock, that will accept 3.5" disks. Those disks require both the 12v supply for the motors, and the 5v supply for the electronics.

Slow. Instead something like this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Docking-Station-3-5-Inch-SDOCK2U33EB/dp/B00KILQOG0 and put in two 6TB drives. Then implement disk rotation for airgapped backups.

There's several ways of doing this but here's what I did. It may be more steps but I never hose up my existing drive or Grub (or Windows if your main HD runs Windows.

Changed my BIOS to boot order
cdrom first
usb second
HD third

Obviously, if no cdrom -or- usb bootable drive is present the system will automatically boot from the local hard drive.

then I shutdown my pc, disconnect the local HD (or take it out if a laptop)
attach the new USB hard drive (usb3 works really well here).

Note: know what keyboard combo at startup your BIOS uses to allow you to select which device to boot from. example: on my Lenovo laptops is either F12 or F1 but check your machine.

boot from the ubuntu Live CD and install Ubuntu onto the only drive available the USB HD doing all the normal ubuntu install steps.

ubuntu will install grub onto that USB drive when its done.

Power down the PC/laptop and re-connect its internal HD (or reinstall the laptop's drive).

If you want to boot up from the USB drive then connect it tot he PC/Laptop.,

Power up the PC/laptop

Because you changed the BIOS boot order... if the USB is connected it will boot the Ubuntu on it.

If you disconnect the USB before booting .. the PC/Laptop's main HD will boot.

This is a safe way to do this for new linux users who worry about screwing up their Windows install.

On my home desktop PC I bought 2 of these...
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Docking-Station-3-5-Inch-SDOCK2U33EB/dp/B00KILQOG0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416242825&sr=8-3&keywords=external+esata+dock

and just buy small 2.5 inch sata drives that I can insert/remove when I want. However, you have to either have a USB3 port or an esata (external sata) port on your PC to make use of it. But these work really well and basically give me an endless HD solution.

1 TB sata3 drives are only about $100 and they just pop in or out like a toast in a toaster.

Anyway those are some more ideas to think about.
