We're reading Statistical Techniques for Project Control. This is for a master of science in project management.
The book is only moderately helpful... I recommend renting it and reading it through the Kindle app on your computer (can't use actual Kindles or tablets). I don't have any statistical background, so a lot of it is over my head, but our professor has helped translate a lot of it and given us the framework needed so I can build some things in Excel. The @Risk plugin is pretty expensive, so I'm trying to translate some of it into spreadsheets.
Most of the statistical control seems better suited to manufacturing. I'm an IT manager, and there's so much variability in what we do that it's hard to use statistical control to identify areas we can improve. So far, the best use I've found for it is to provide a red flag--I may not be engaged with some of our operations day-to-day, but if I can get the systems built, I can have the software raise a red flag for me if something is taking longer than I think it ought.
