I'll likely be using ATH-M50s at least to start. I've been considering IEMs or active noise-canceling cans. Need isolation.

For those who want isolation but can't afford $500 Shure SRH1540s or $140 Audio-Technica M50s, these are quite good at only $79:

I did it with Status Audio CB-1 $63 closed back over ear. Comfortable and in my price range. Pretty good sound. Some people complained about the quality of the sliders for adjusting size but seem fine to me. Forewarning the splitter that comes with the mic to separate into mic and headphone jack takes a bit of force to jam into your pc. Adjusted some mic settings real fast and it was perfect.

More or less all headphones by Superlux have a portruding male 3.5 jack.

He'll never break those.

Alternatively Takstar Pro 82 or Status audio Cb-1

For gaming, I've used:

AKG K52, K1000, Q701; Audeze LCD-2 Classic; Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X, AD2000X (w/ MrSpeakers Alpha pads); Beyerdynamic DT990 Edition (600 Ω); Creative Aurvana Live!; Denon AH-D7200; HiFiMan HE400i, HE-500 (w/ ZMF Ori lambskin pads), HE-560 V2; HyperX Cloud II; Massdrop x Koss Porta Pro X; Monoprice Modern Retro, Monolith M1060; Philips Fidelio X2, SHP9500 (w/ Shure HPAEC1840 pads); Sennheiser HD580, HD598 SR, HD700, HD800; Sivga SV007; Stax SR-L300; Superlux HD662 EVO, HD668B (w/ Brainwavz velour pads), HD669, HD681 EVO (w/ Brainwavz velour pads); Tritton Pro+; and Turtle Beach Ear Force XP Seven.

My go-to recommendation is Sivga SV007 (Walnut) with V-MODA BoomPro. If you need sound isolation, then I suggest Status Audio CB-1.

If you're open to using a mic such as Antlion ModMic or Massdrop Minimic, then I have other headphone recommendations and suggestions.

For virtual surround sound, you can use Astro MixAmp Pro TR, Creative Sound Blaster G6, or Turtle Beach Elite Pro TAC. I recommend SBX Pro Studio (Creative) over Dolby Headphone (Astro and Turtle Beach) because it has less compression and more accurate positional audio.

Setup

---

You attach the BoomPro mic by inserting it directly into the headphone, which replaces the original headphone cable.

The cable terminates in a single 3.5 mm connector, so you can connect it directly to the controller or any other device with a headset jack, like the Mixamp, Sound Blaster G6, and Pro TAC. If you connect it to a regular headphone jack, then the mic won't work. No mics will. If the device only has separate headphone and mic ports, then you need to use a TRRS Y-splitter, which is included with the BoomPro.

Sound

---

SV007:

SV007 a well-balanced sound profile. The mid-bass, which is where boom and punch come from, is a little bit boosted. The sub-bass, which is how deep the bass goes and is where rumble comes from, is a little bit reduced. The overall bass is clean. The treble is close to neutral. It's clean, smooth, and crisp. The midrange is clear, not tinny or muffled. The overall clarity is great.

It has a large soundstage, very good imaging and separation, and good to very good detail retrieval for competitive shooters. I assess headphones mainly in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a multiplayer game I've played for over 3000 hours and I thrive at relying on sound cues.

Soundstage is perceived space and environment of sound. It's width, depth, and height. I talk about the type of soundstage that the headphone produces. Many games have a narrow, shallow, and short soundstage. A small soundstage makes the environment around you sound confined or boxed in. With a large soundstage, the environment sounds more spatial and expansive. You can't comprehend it without experiencing it. Imaging is inherent to the audio content. It's how accurately the locations of sounds/objects are reproduced. Soundstage and imaging constitute positional audio, and you could say they are the stereo equivalent of virtual surround sound. Before you make any stances on virtual surround sound, I recommend that you read this post I wrote. Separation is how you discern individual sounds from a range of overlapping sounds.

BoomPro:

You can actually judge for yourself by listening to recordings on YouTube.

I prefer to watch Podcastage for mic reviews.

Build, ergonomics, & features

---

SV007:

SV007 has an open design (as you can see with the grills on the earcups), so sound passes freely in and out, unlike closed headphones which attenuate sound from passing through. The benefits of an open design are generally a larger soundstage and better imaging. If your ears tend to heat up, it may help mitigate this as it allows more airflow and heat to dissipate.

The build is sturdy and lightweight, featuring metal yokes, hinges, and headband. It has no flimsy or squeaky parts. The cups are made of wood. They tilt and swivel and can lie flat. I have average sized ears and the earpads fit around them and don't press them against the inside of the cups. The pads are plush and have a smooth and relatively high-quality protein leather. The headband has decent padding, but the headphone has great weight distribution so it doesn't exert pressure on top of my head and doesn't cause hotspots. Adjusting the headband is smooth and easy and it stays firmly in place. The clamping force is mild and isn't too loose or too tight for my average sized head. The build quality is excellent with a near immaculate finish all around.

BoomPro:

BoomPro has a flexible aluminum neck and a tangle-free, braided cable that's free of microphonics. The game volume and mic mute controls are easy to adjust and don't accidentally adjust themselves when rubbing against your clothes. Adjusting them is smooth and consistent, not scratchy, sluggish, or sticky. The mic is as non-obtrusive as a boom mic can be and is almost unnoticeable in my peripheral vision.

Elsewhere, I have asked this question and have seen this question asked. This pair always comes up in the recommendations.

I can't recommend it yet, as I am hopefully going to get them in a few weeks, but apparently they're good for mixing.

Status Audio CB-1 Closed Back Studio Monitor Headphones https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BDX1IVW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kayZCbPN5W7PH

Edit: oh yeah they're £60 so in budget

u/mrbaritonefreak · 2 pointsr/lapfoxtrax

I'm not a total expert but this is what I would recommend.

Headphones:

Cheap and good for noisy-ish environments - Status audio CB-1 $79

If you live in a noisy environment, These will give you the best reaults. A lot of getting the most our of this album is isolation. Direct Sound EX-29 $107

Super good closed backed headphones, but impedance is very high - Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro $160

Very good open backed headphones, impedance is relatively low -

Audio Technica ATH-AD700x $109

Super good open backed headphones, but they have a very high impedance - Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro $179

Amps/DACS:

Honestly this is where I personally would spend most of your money, any really good pair of open backed headphones are going to make albums like phwoa sound amazing with the wide sounds stage but a good amp and DAC will make a world of difference. For the price the Mayflower electronics Objective2 is best bang for your buck. I' don't have a ton of experience with amps and DACs but the O2 is properly good, and for $250 you can't go wrong.

Other than that you could look into a tube style Amp but you'd need a separate DAC in most cases plus I personally don't find the tube amps to be a whole lot better unless you spend a shit ton of money on them. They do look cool as balls though.

Favorite setup: California Headphone Co. Silverdos  or Audio Technica with my LG V20 and its beastly DAC and equalizer tuning. Although I wouldn't recommend the California headphones because I personally only paid $15 for them and $200 seems a bit steep for them tbh.

Note: I've owned or at least tried everything I've listed except the CB-1 but I've heard from a lot of well respected sourced that they are pretty damn good especially for under $100

u/Id10t3qu3 · 2 pointsr/audioengineering

I took a bit of a leap of faith and ordered the Status Audio CB1 based off the reviews Status Audio CB-1 Closed Back Studio Monitor Headphones

It's been just a few days, but i am blown away. It's actually made me start switching between phones and my studio monitors about every 30 mins, as they provide such a a crystal clear low end that my room lacks. I'm no expert, and there's usually a reason why certain brands become industry standard, but the only way I can imagine a set of cans being better at this price range is if they comped my vocal takes for me.

So seeing you have a headset, the A40s. They aren't very good compared to price equivalent Of DT 990's and as well as DT 770s now I would highly suggest upgrading to a headphone and a modmic or blue yeti.

Comparisons

Headsets are generally really bad, the A40s/A50s are ok, they aren't great but not bad. What I would do is move to headphones and a modmic. People have made this switch and love it. The DT 990s are stupid comfy, same for the DT 880s and DT 770s and any Bererdynamic headphones. They are so comfy, huge pads, deep cuffs, comfy, so much.

Open vs closed back

Headsets are generally closed back, however they have some issues with that. They tend to have bad audio positioning in the headset. They don't give spacial awareness and such.

Open headphones leak sound, so people around you can hear. The drivers are directly exposed or slightly covered. However they offer a lot better experience, much larger sound stage, much better audio positioning, and everything better overall.

Mics

Now for headphones, they don't come with mics so you have a few options. You can get a Blue Yeti mic, a modmic, Audio Technica AT2020, or similar. I'll list a few

Modmic 4.0

Blue Yeti

Snowball

Headphones closed and open

Open, DT 990

Closed, DT 770

Open, AKG q701

AKG 7xx, open

Closed, Status Audio CB-1

Open, Status Audio, OB-1, Hardware Canucks did a video on this

AMPs/DACs

Magni 2

* Aune T1 Mk2

Finals words

I would visit /r/headphones for a 2nd opinion too. Also feel free to ask any questions regarding this or the build. I included a 1440p monitor if you wanted to upgrade instead of the headphones.
u/multiversechorus · 2 pointsr/ToolBand

Couple of options:

These are pretty much flat-response meaning you'll hear the music as it was intended to be heard. Some say they suffer in bass but I don't think that. They're very accurate at this price range. $70

If you can afford to go a bit higher, I'd recc audiotechnica ath-m40x.

In term of sound quality, you'll get a lot more bang for you buck if you go chi-fi while being in the price range
TRN v80, tin t3/t2 etc.

u/thefinkasaurus · 1 pointr/headphones

Hey people! I'm new to the headphone game and I'm trying to upgrade. I've been looking at these four, but I'm still not sure if these are my best bets:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AIO8XVA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001ARCFA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=A34VCPZVL7E6XQ

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00001WRSJ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A13BNE3P7C8THK

Here are my specs below. Are any of these good bets, or is there a better one I'm not listing:

Budget - $80 USD or under, preferably around $50

Source - iTunes on iPhone, corded

Requirements for Isolation - I'd prefer a little but not super important

Will you be using these Headphones in Public?- Yes, at work mostly

Preferred Type of Headphone - On ear

Preferred tonal balance - Probably balanced, but I'm open to anything

Past headphones - Audio-Technica ATH-M30

Preferred Music - Very varied, I try a little of everything. Lately I've been into Elvis Costello's Get Happy!! and the Hamilton soundtrack.

Improvement- I would like to upgrade a little bit, but not a ton. Very budget conscious. I'd like these to last at least a year or two.

People love the Mx40's. I got the Status Audio CB-1's for my gaming headset. If you're looking for an open back, people seem to really love the shp9500. Like i said, those are open back and are light on the bass. Another open back that people love in the price range are the HD 559. I've heard good things about the Massdrop x HiFiMAN HE-350.

Kind of depends on what you're looking for in terms of sound and where you're using them.

E: if you aren't dead set on new, i'd find something more expensive and check out /r/AVexchange. Really good deals and it's a bunch of people with headphone buying additctions. Just buy and sell constantly. I mentioned above, but i paid $350 for what would've cost me about $600 new after mods. I find that headphones is an area where people take care of their stuff because it takes a special kind of person to start dropping hundreds on headphones that aren't beats.

Are Sennheiser HD440BTs a good pair of bluetooth headphones for the price? I've also had Status CB-1 and an adapter recommended to me.

u/Sen7ryGun · 1 pointr/PCSound

Depends on your total budget, but my best advice for a relatively cheap starter set for bringing your audio setup up to a solid standard on a stationary desktop PC goes like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ - Fifine cardioid USB condenser mic

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GRMF5ZE/ - Neewer mic boom arm and pop filter

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BDX1IVW/ - Status Audio CB-1 closed back headphones

Total price - $111 USD

Don't worry about an external audio interface until you're looking at a proper professional setup or are having specific audio issues that require you to move your audio processing solution to the outside of your PC case. I've been into desktop audio for a few years now and this is my ultimate "bang for your buck" setup I recommend to people looking to get away from gaming headsets while keeping to a gaming headset budget. I have a couple of friends now running this setup and they love it. The mic is nice and clear, the boom lets you get it out of the way and have it wherever you like and the headphones sound great and are incredibly comfortable for long ass listening or gaming sessions. There's no XLR adaption to worry about and everything will plug straight into your PC as it stands right now.
