My favourite way to finish them is to sew some cute fabric around it to cover the back and the sides. Walmart and any craft store has a bin of 'left overs' where you can get fat quarters in cute prints for as little as $1. It takes a bit of pinning and backstitching but it's not too difficult to do and it's well worth the aesthetic of the fabric against your picture.

They do make plastic covers you can use too if you want to go that route. and They even make fabrics that are prelaced just for bookmarks.

You can buy plastic sleeves and insert a decorative piece of card or whatever but sewing ribbon on the back is nicer. Or just lay a blank piece of the same material on the back, stitch the two together just outside the pattern area, cut a little way outside that and fray the edges to make a fringe. (You could add a personal touch to the "blank" piece -- initials and date, or something.)

For a quick solution you can use iron-on fusible web to stick a piece of ribbon or felt to the back.
