The main thing you did wrong is not having a good, bright light handy. I carry one of these everywhere, with or without a firearm. It lives on my desk at night, a step away from my bed. You don't ever want to be armed, in the dark, unable to properly illuminate and identify targets. If you had a good, bright light, you could have lit that person up through the window and probably sent them running.

Lights are cheap, in the overall scheme of things. You shouldn't be deploying a firearm without one.

I hope you called the police and reported this incident.

Fox 40 Sonik whistle. Not something to be used for fun. This is a real emergency whistle that can reach 120+ dB. It's equivalent to having a chainsaw revving next to your head. They also make a standard version if you're not trying to blow out ear drums. It still gets pretty loud.

Olight I3E EOS

Olight I1R EOS if you want something rechargeable.

Also, Olight does regular sales and new releases on their website.

Streamlight is another great option but their keychain size offering is just not very good compared to Olight. I do believe everyone should have a Pro Tac 1L-1AA since it can take both C123A batteries and standard AA batteries.

Not the guy you're asking but here are my thoughts. There is pretty much no penlight on the market that will do what he wants, and it will be laughably ineffective regardless. If he needs something tiny, get him a Streamlight Stylus USB. That's gonna be about the brightest thing you can get with any ""tactical"" potency.

If you can talk him into a 14500 or 18650 light then he's more likely to get the power he wants. If he can handle having a solid chunk of aluminum on him, the Streamlight ProTac 2L-X and Wowtac A1S BSS v3 are going to be my choices for an inexpensive strobe machine. The Olight M1X Striker is another choice in this general form factor.

Streamlight also makes the ProTac 1L-AA which is a little smaller, but it only puts out 350 lumens.

All the lights I have posited outside the Stylus USB have easy access to the strobe mode, typically a double or triple tap on the tail switch. This is important to my mind because many lights require the light to be on and a button to be held for one second - practically useless and too long to get to if really needed.

I really hope that he does a big long think about what he wants out of this flashlight, and I hope he tries to "stun" himself with his flashlight to see what its like to be on the receiving end. The reaction he has, being prepared for it, is the best he can hope for in any situation in which he uses the strobe against someone. Its not like in the TacLight commercials.

I wrote a couple more of my thoughts on using a flashlight for self defense a little while ago if you find it handy. I personally like having the strobe and I would use it in an emergency situation, but its very important to note its limitations.

Not illegal, per se, but would be considered brandishing in most jurisdictions because it is attached to a firearm.

Weapon lights are for target identification. Hand held lights are for searching. Spend the $41 on Amazon to get a decent Streamlight.

> Anything you would have done different?

Carry a flashlight.

A LED Maglight works just fine. Compact flashlights are easy to carry, and have high/low/strobe modes.

u/rocketboy2319 · 3 pointsr/guns

I carry one of these every day. Eats CR123s on full power and gets super toasty, but lasts long on the "low" mode which is bright enough for most applications. Also has strobe mode if that's your thing, and the clip is nice.

Takes cr123a's and AA's. Supposidly can use an AAA in a pich but I haven't tried it.

You’re ready to go then! For a budget light that’s reliable, I like this entry level streamlight. I have one on my 590a1, it will do fine on an AR. You will still need a compatible mount.

I haven't used Klarus myself, but they appear to be similar to EagleTac and Fenix which are decent flashlights, although a bit overkill for most people.

I have a few Streamlight and Surefire lights which I am very happy with. Usually, if someone is looking to get a decent flashlight which isn't too expensive and will last a long time, I'd point them in the direction the Protac 1L-1AA, since CR123/18650 batteries can be hard to find/expensive in stores and it can use AA batteries in a pinch.

Most people don't really need a flashlight brighter than around 200 lumens, so a lot of these extreme lumen models are a bit overkill. Not to mention that usually with a lower lumen light the battery will last a lot longer.

Amazon is helpful here. I would advise getting two things: a reliable, bright flashlight, and strong pepper gel.

For the flashlight, I recommend a Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G75P1SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9ia.Bb301STP9) or the Streamlight Protac 2-LX (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WD29DZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xka.Bb703WW4V).

There are a lot of good lights out there, but these two models are excellent and should meet the needs of most people. The 2-LX is bigger, brighter, and can use rechargeable batteries. However, the 1L-1AA has the advantage of being smaller. Both can easily fit in a pocket or purse.

Here’s a video review if the 2-LX: https://youtu.be/j_7RfUFYblU

Here’s a video comparing the two: https://youtu.be/vythpZUBab8

For the pepper gel, I recommend Sabre Red (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT3LMP4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6ga.BbRKDF9CK). It has good range, is super hot, and this kit comes with a practice unit.

I've actually mounted a ProTac 1L-1AA ($38) to a Frank Proctor Light Mount ($59). It's not "M-Lok" per se, since it mounts to pic rails, but (a) you can mount to the top rail of the handguard, or (b) get a short rail section. I figured that's all I need for a 8" AR pistol for home defense needs.

I could see doing the same with a ProTac 2L-X for longer rifles to keep everything cheap and lightweight.

OP, IMHO, your best bet is going to be learning what to look for before the mugger picks you as a target. Once the person is intent on assaulting you physically, the best tool at that point is going to be a firearm, or maybe a fix blade knife if they got that close to you.

Situational awareness, pre-assault cues/indicators, verbal judo. Learn them, study them, master them. The fight you will win is a fight that you never get yourself into.

If you are out after dark often, have a good flashlight with you. Not one of those $5 walmart/gas station specials. A small, compact streamlight or Surefire is worth its weight in gold in dark situation to let you see what they are doing, and in a worst-case scenario, take away the attacker(s) ability to see what they are doing.

If you do change your mind to get a firearm, invest in good, quality training. Go beyond your state-mandated CCW course. Learn when or when not to use your gun, and even better, learn how to use the gun. But remember, if you get to the point to use that gun, you already lost half the battle.

This is great. Thank you for the opportunity! I would love another
Streamlight protac duel-fuel since the first is in my emergency kit!

Several Streamlights (such as this Protac 1L-1AA) have exactly the clip he's talking about so you can use the clip both ways without having to put your thing down, flip it and reverse it which is convenient but there are much more affordable lights than streamlight for most of their features.

This is my favorite compact travel light:

https://www.amazon.de/Streamlight-TAC-61304-HL-Scheinwerfer-88061/dp/B01G75P1SC

It requires a cr123 to achieve maximum brightness, but also works with AAs.
