I've been thinking about using one of these Switchmate switches for my office. Unfortunately it's just Bluetooth, so I wouldn't call it a truly smart switch.

  1. Buy smart switches
  2. Remove 'dumb' switches and put them in a box
  3. Install smart switches
    ...

When you have to move out:
  4. Try to remember where you put the box
  5. Reinstall swtiches.

You're going to spend far more time and effort, and probably as much money, developing and installing some sort of servo controlled mechanical switch over the current light switch. Plus it'll be ugly, and it'll likely be on battery which will be a royal PIA. If it's not battery then you're going to spend more time wiring it up to the switch as you would just putting in and subsequently removing smart switches.

BTW, they do make mechanical switches for mother-in-laws who refuse to get with the times:

Personally, I refused to install it for my MIL and got her a digital one and installed it.

Switchmate is a commercial servo solution. https://amzn.com/B01EV7FXOA

Might not be the most interesting / fun solution if that's what you're looking for but they make these light switch timers that have the switching mechanism already and bolt to where the screwholes in a standard switch plate are. You could just get one of those and modify it to control the motor with your own electronics.

couldnt quickly find the timers that are probably cheaper but stuff like this

Switchmate check out the reviews though most people not too impressed. Any reason you don't want to replace the switches? It is a little bit of work but nothing bad.

You could get some Microbot pushes or even something similar. Just to give you an idea. They literally stick onto the existing switches and automatically presses them.

If changing a light switch violates the lease wouldn't modifying a relay in be the same thing?
