I bought a 12w 800lumen (60w equiv) Sylvania dimmable LED bulb.Awesome light. Good color. Even dims out gently like an incandescent when you tun it off. Only con is that you can't dim it nearly as far as incandescent lights.
But it cost $25. So it better last forever. The power supply section of it doesn't run nearly as hot as most CFLs and the construction doesn't seem anywhere near as cheap, so I think it's likely to perform.
I've dissected my CFL bulbs after they fail early, and I find the tube usually works just fine and the power supply part fails. Take one apart once, I think even an untrained person can see it's built cheaply.
The only real solution is fixtures made for LED or Fluorescent. Mcgyvering LEDs and Florescent lights to fit in fixtures made for incandescent is just asking for problems. Just think about how long linear fluorescent fixtures and tubes last. There are some in my parents house which are older than me and still work! Granted, they have become a little green...
