There is a game Kvothe learns called Tak. You can actually buy this, but I have seen quite a few hand made versions which are pretty cool.

Tak can be an incredibly awesome-looking game, especially with a custom board. It's like Checkers meets Go. Kinda. It's my favorite two-player game.
The r/Tak subreddit is loaded with people making custom boards and pieces, but even the board and pieces in the base set look great.
Dice Forge is another fan-freaking-tastic-looking game that's a lot of fun. I'm still impressed by the quality of its components for its price (retails for $40), and I like the art on the cards and the board. It's an engine builder, but instead of getting more dice to roll or better 'stats,' you physically swap out the faces of your dice for better faces.
